Not my story, but I did read a thread from cosplay judges talking about this. Many said that they can tell at a glance when a costume has been bought from China because there's a specific gold trim that's made using sublimation (not really sure what that is, just parroting what I read) that's unobtainable in the US unless specifically purchased from one of those cosplay shops. One judge said she gives those people an opportunity to redeem themselves by asking where they sourced the gold trim, but typically they don't have an answer and that's how she knows they just bought the costume. I would imagine asking for progress photos would out these fakers too. Do you happen to know what started this? I only caught the tail end of the conversation but now I wanna be a chismosa.

The only show I ever judged had someone who bought their costume.
The judge that noticed it had made that costume before, and noticed a glaring design that was present on popular store bought ones (i think a symbol was changed to avoid copyright issues)
The show was small, and the attendee was only 19 or 20, so we just went through the judging like normal, let her walk, and just struck her from consideration without her knowing.
Your job as a guest, even just a judge, is to give the convention attendees a good time. Even the liars.

Again, these points can be resolved if you do your own research and choose an older (well-established) store with high ratings. I recommend reading through actual Chinese customer review posted by mainlanders with legit concerns and seeing how other customers replied to them, not rando overseas white teen reviews on the listings.

Serious. I'll try to find the video where a cosplayer tested it on wigs against another glue (I think tacky?). Any suggestions on how to go about making a skirt like this? I don't necessarily want it to be a perfect 1:1 replica but any ideas on how I should begin are welcome. Is there any way to make fabric look like "petals" that I could sew into a petticoat?

>> No.10631975

>>10631613
This is a tough project for sure. I agree with the other anon, you're going to need a hoop skirt for structure and I also think that a petticoat isn't the right direction for this. A petticoat is zero structure, all fluff. And while that sounds appealing to give the skirt body, it means that you won't have a stable foundation to build the "petals" upon. Furthermore, it would be near impossible to create those rigid upright shapes with fabric and thread alone -- especially the types of silky, light, and soft fabrics that you would be incline to use for a flower costume because they also provide no structure and are finnicky/slippery to work with.

In other words, I think you should take this in a new direction.
If I were making this, I would use a short hoop skirt and then sew. On top of that would be a skirt made with two layers: the under layer would a sturdy and non-stretch fabric that would be able to handle the weight of the petal materials and glue and the second, top layer would be a fabric or material that matches the color of the petals. Then, to create the petals I would use the methods used in one of these two tutorials by Kinpatsu cosplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-8L2n5pveU or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSZPfYJteA.. Then attach the petals to the two-layer skirt with a hefty glue like contact cement. It would be tough with the way the top is designed, but it would be ideal to make a shoulder harness to distribute the weight off of the waistband. The top I would make into a dress separate from the skirt for ease of wear and so that the bodice isn't pulled on the weight of the skirt.

Anyway, that's what I would do. I hope that helps.

Yes you do. Good news is that I found a shop that sells pre-made led strips with effects. Bad news is that you won't be able to get both colors in that alternate pattern that fade in an out unless you program it yourself. You might be able to get around this by buying two premade wires and weaving them in an out so that only the right color is visible I suppose? Here's the links anyway.

Amazon or Aliexpress have $30-50 ones that are pretty good. Just check the reviews and photos to make sure it's not super-cheap fake-pockets 100% polyester or anything. There are a lot of Chinese brands with various names that sell suits and/or jackets with a picture similar to related that I usually go for to get my cosplay suits (make sure you double-check to see if they use Asian sizes or not), nice quality stuff.
You can also thrift or use sites like ASOS but the issue is that men's fashion usually goes for muted tones rather than bright Lupintic colors. "Quirky suit" brands like Opposuits I personally don't like because of the material but YMMV.

I can see why your idea is to lean in the direction of the kanzashi petals because of the shape, but I don't think that would work at the size and rigidity anon is working with. No amount of starching is going to be able to uphold those shapes and sharp lines. And the interfacing would have to be heavyweight to add enough support to stand upright which in turn would weigh the petals down. I think this would be a great idea if anon was working on a smaller scale though. And I agree that a solid foundation like a hoop is necessary.

Newfag here (not trying to start anything or stir up drama I just am really paranoid), my favorite character is Ramlethal from Guilty Gear and I was wondering if it would be fine if I could cosplay her (without skin darkening since some people consider it to be black/brown face). My black cosplayer friend said I could get a light spray tan and it be fine as long as it's not too drastic from my actual skin (I'm pale) but I don't know how I feel about that or if people would get offended or say I'm racist?

>> No.10632459

Don't do the tan. At best, it's unnecessary and adds nothing of value to your costume. At worst, you'll be accused of intentionally darkening your skin (even though it's not blackfacing, you still are intentionally trying to make your skin darker). You're fine the way you are.

Popular go to for foam is a scroll saw or band saw. I personally just use a jig saw to get the basic shape and go back over it with my belt sander. Right will take some modding to make it work,, like reducing the bottom hem circumference, adding to the shoulders, and possibly widening the waist. I'm very farsighted and need red contacts for my cosplay and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a site that actually sells them. I've scoured the hyperopia section of every site I could find and thus far pic related was the best I came up with and probably what I'll have to settle for but I feel stupid because they're very obviously pink.
I got my hopes up when I discovered Desio's Cherry Coffee lenses, but they were out of stock and when I messaged them they told me they were discontinued.

>> No.10636315

It starts with skincare. Yes, makeup can help, but at the end of the day it can really only sit on top of whatever texture your skin is. If that's not an option for you time, money, or effortwise, then a basic face would require:
>smoothing / pore-filling primer
>liquid foundation + beauty sponge or brush
>concealer
>powder (in the same color of your skin)
>blush
>brow pencil or powder

If you wanna go the extra mile for a complete face, then:
>bronzer
>highlight
>brow gel
>brown eyeshadows
>dark brown or black eyeliner

Youtube can take you from there about brands and how to apply it

One last thing, does anyone have a good resource for getting consistently shaped diamonds doing an ito wrap? I've been watching a lot of tutorials on youtube and I feel like they just gloss over it or their wraps look sloppy themselves. It could just be the material I'm using now being hard to work with, but my diamonds are ass and all over the place. You don't have to pick a cosplay based on your physical appearance. Go with what you like and relatively easy to do. Since it's your first con and possibly first cosplay, I know that you're likely looking for a cosplay that will be recognized and fun, so my advice is to pick a character from a popular or at least semi-popular series who has an outfit/design that is easily recognizable, and you'll want to keep it simple because frustration over doing a complex costume will suck out most of the fun.

Any advice on what I can do for the coat on this to make it breathable in the summer?

>> No.10643706

>>10643567
There is nothing that you can do to avoid sweating like a pig when there's just too many layers, leather, and fur. What you can do instead is try to keep yourself cool.
Some tips I've gathered from attending a summer con that's held during the hottest week of summer annually:
>don't wear your full costume when waiting in line to get in.
I've seen people wearing tank tops and sneakers with a full face of cosplay makeup, their wig cap on, and a bag full of their costume as they wait in line and then change in the bathrooms once they're inside the convention center. If you can't do this completely, at least try to keep the vest and jacket off until you're inside with AC.
>treat it like a mascot costume and only wear this costume for a few hours
>Know the signs of overheating / heat stroke / heat exhaustion and check in with yourself or your buds
>drink more water than you think you need. Don't wait until youre thirsty to drink & stay away from salty foods
>cold backs inside of your costume in the areas that exude the most heat (back, chest, nape of neck, etc

Honestly though it's better to pick a costume that is appropriate for the weather and save this for photoshoots, night events, or a con with more suitable weather.

Left (Rika) is best for first-time cosplay because it's pretty much all found parts from a thrift store and you'd just need to buy a basic wig and trim the bangs a bit.

If you insist on sewing, then Yuno in the middle. There's no point in sewing Rika's blouse. It'd be cheaper to buy a short-sleeved white dress shirt than to purchase the raw materials for one.

Homura's outfit is easy but it has a lot of parts and the simplicity of the outfit makes it easier to mess up on the smaller details, like two bows, skirt ruffles, diamond detailing, etc. (Actually making the over-the-shoes tights wouldn't be a beginner project unless you just flat out bought those).

All three are easily available to buy though so if you're not on a time crunch or limited in buying methods I would just go with what you want to do.

You can cut up fabric scraps into tiny pieces (about dime sized to quarter sized work best) and mix it with your stuffing. Try to mix it evenly so that there's no lumps -- cutting your pieces on the smaller side typically helps this too -- and you should be able to replace half or more stuffing that you would've used and get rid of your fabric scraps.

You're free to do what you want but tinsel and hair glitter are going to look like shit no matter how neat you put it on. Elevating your costume is all in the fabrics. Rather than a simple cotton, you could use cotton sateen with has a nice, but not costumey shine to it. You could cast the gem with shimmer pigments or glitters. You can do a dewy makeup look as opposed to matte. Rhinestones aren't a bad idea, but I'd recommend being thoughtful with which stones you pick and where you put them. Using alternating stone types (ie. some round, some teardrop, or whatever) would be a cool way to make it pop.

I would never buy feathers again after learning how they are sourced, but this was years ago. Foam like >>10644664 suggested would be difficult to make, but the could end up looking good if you really took your time. Most if not all of the cosplayers I have seen do this use real feathers, some great examples of this costume are ElenaLeetah and Pugoffka-sama, both on deviantart. I've been thinking about trying to make a fursuit - more specifically, I'd like to make a costume based on Legoshi from Beastars - but I've run into an issue that virtually all the guides I've found for making fursuit heads/paws/etc. ultimately seem to assume that the costume will shoot for cartoonishly-proportioned and/or "larger-than-life" sizes. In contrast, I'd like to shoot for something that much more closely conforms to my body - most likely, I expect this would mean using something armsock-like for the hands/arm fur, and a smaller, hard base (probably resin) for the mask's shape rather than a foam one.

Does anyone have tips for or know of any tutorials relating to making fursuit heads smaller? I'm partly concerned that if I do end up committing to a resin base, I'll have to use one of my own design, so any guides on working with resin effectively or tips on materials that might be easier to prototype with would be greatly appreciated as well.

My other main concern is in terms of materials - I'm not sure where the best place is to get fabrics that can stretch the way an armsock would. I've heard some good things about nftech, but their products seem like they're very much on the "most expensive option" side of things. >all the guides i've found are cartoonishly big
>Why is this an issue though?
One of the most common approaches is to literally start with a "helmet" of foam that surrounds the entire head and build up from there, an approach which isn't going to work out very well for a goal of "making something that as closely fits to my head as possible, except for the snout at the front"

>using resin sounds like it would be mighty heavy and hot
Probably, but there's a number of high-quality fursuit heads out there right now that also use resin, and it seemed like the approach that would be best suited to attempting to scale things down a bit. I'm going to do my best to keep stuff like ventilation and breathability in mind; this might end up being a costume that I don't end up wearing for too long at a time anyways, but I appreciate the advice.

>Do you have any examples of these with fur on them?
No, you would need to use the fabric to make the armsocks and/or half-body suit and then attach the fur to it. They're stretchy, decently priced, and come in a variety of skin or non-skin colors though.

What kind of paint should I use on foam pieces that flex?

I used spray paint on a plastidip primer on some foam armor pieces last year, and any small amount of flex made cracks in the paint.
Now I have 3 chainsaw pieces like this, 2 for arms and 1 on a helmet. The arm pieces have a thin metal piece in them so they don't flex as much, but the helmet one does not. I'm scared of ruining the paint job as soon as I move my head and the chainsaw piece wobbles around

>Putting fur on stretch fabric in a way that doesn't compromise the stretch
It's might sound hard to hear someone explain it, but it's simple once you get down to it. Watch a couple videos about buying stretch fabric and you'll get the hang of it. To give it to you in a nutshell, you just need to make sure that both the fur and under-fabric (power mesh or whatever) has the same amount and direction of stretch (2 or 4 way). Having a swatch of the fur you plan on using will probably help you out.

A lot of people seem to forget or not know about pre-dyed ones, I think it's just because feathers are pretty uncommonly used these days! Foam feathers can look really fantastic, but they take absolutely forever to get right/realistic enough. Great for small applications though, especially if you need very unique feathers! >Already have an idea on what to do for her coat (modified Zea Blazer from moodfabric)
Actually, I would recommend mixing patterns for the blazer if you want to stick to Mood. The collar on the Zea is much too long for your reference picture. I'd suggest using the Layton Bolero bodice with the Zea sleeves and a self-drafted collar. You might be able to get away with using one of the collars from Mood, but any one of them would still need some modifications for the proportions of the blazer. Alternatively, you could use a premade pattern like McCall's M8155 Misses' & Women's Jacket & Vest which you would only need to slightly tweak the collar for.

As for the top, you'll want to look for a bodice with a "sweetheart neckline". I couldn't find one on mood, but there's a few options with McCalls and other pattern companies. Typically the front of those are made with 3 pieces (see picrel): the two sides and center front which creates the "heart" of the sweetheart by cutting the piece on the fold. Instead of cutting the center on the fold, cut the center to make it into 2 pieces and extend the center of on of those pieces so that it overlaps like you see in your reference pic. I can draw a pic if need be.

I don't necessarily have to stick to Mood, but just trying to keep the costume at a budget. However the McCall's pattern looks like exactly the thing I need. Never had to tweak a collar from a pattern before but I'd imagine it's as straightforward as just adjusting the size/length of collar.

Don't think it needs to be strapless. With the reboot design I think Wayforward combined the outfit from the JP Advance Wars 1 with the outfit from the localized version (pic) so I think the vest just needs to be sleeveless. At the same time the Reboot just got announced and besides the trailer and the Nintendo Treehouse gameplay there's not very many good references for Nell's new outfit.

Pretty much! In a collar, there's typically two sections: the part that actually attaches to the shirt and the folded over part that is actually seen. Obviously, you'd have to see the pattern itself to know, but theoretically you would just have to taper the bottom end to your desired length and continue with the pattern per usual.

>I don't necessarily have to stick to Mood, but just trying to keep the costume at a budget.

You can either draft it by hand or into a 3D modeling program like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRBk9npIevQ

To draft it by hand, you would need to have a friend help you saran wrap your head. Then smoothly apply scotch or duct tape over the saran wrap and use a sharpie to draw your helmet shape. You only need to both drawing it on half of your head if the shape will be symmetrical. Carefully cut the pattern free and transfer it out on a sheet of paper. You may need to cut some darts (its easier just to google this if you don't know what it is) so that it lays flat. Clean up the lines and then you've got yourself a pattern.

>How do I style her weird hair floofs
You will need to do some teasing, but there is a way to make them not crunchy. So what you'll see on Tiktok is newbie cosplayers teasing the hell out of the entire wig or strand and then brushing it out which leaves that awful texture. Instead, what you'll want to do (and what many pro's do) is to use a sandwich or layering method. First, separate the hair into two parts: the inner and outer layer. The inner layer requires the most hair and will be the portion you tease and hairspray to create the strong base. Then, you take the thin inner layer and just brush it on top of the teased inner portion and smooth it out -- thus making the spike or hair floof appear to be smooth and not crusty, but still have volume. This is a good method for any kind of spikes or teasing you need to do for a wig.

>Her blouse is very strange, it has a kind of red trim to it and has a strange floral pattern.
Perhaps I'm just blind, but I don't see a floral pattern on her blouse. Unless you're talking about the scallop trim? If that's the case then yes, it's easy to add that to a blouse. Typically you would sandwich the trim in between the layers when sewing the collar, but you could easily add it on top or underneath a premade collar. It would look the cleanest to put it underneath the collar, but if you use clean handstitching along the scallops it should look like intentional topstiching.

If you buy one with straight hair, yes. Sometimes they can have a slight wave or curl just from the way they're sitting in the wig bag, but that is easily taken care of with a straightener. I am also a body paint anon and have been experimenting with various stuff this past year.
Grease paint is pretty much only good for face. Takes forever to apply and seal with powder. Will probably get everywhere anyway, especially around points of friction.
Water activated can be applied much faster and looks just as good, but still not completely transfer-proof. Will also rub off heavily around any areas of your clothing with lots of friction against it.
I will be trying two things next in attempts to perfect this stupid fucking full-body con bodypaint problem.
1. PAX paint, an adhesive and acrylic mix which ALEGEDLY doesn't rub off at all, just needs to be powdered

It looks like rows of piping to me -- the groin does atleast anyway, not sure about the other areas. Piping is made by encasing rope in fabric and typically used as a trim or seam decoration. The Sailor Scouts' costumes use rows of piping for the shoulders and hip roll though, so that community and their vast tutorials could be of help to you. In terms of makeup, I will straight up tell you it will take multiple times and practice before you start getting it right. You are definitely going to want to learn how to contour your face to hide your masculine features, beard shadow, etc while creating an illusion of feminine features. Trying to get my Hawk Moth costume together but the mask is turning out to be a nightmare. Is there a material or method I can use for a skin-tight mask that doesn't end up looking like a freak show or am I better off ditching 100% accuracy and making a rigid helmet?

>> No.10651922

I don't have a specific answer for you, but I would take a look at tutorials and resources from Spider-Man cosplayers. They use stretchy skin-tight masks too. I've seen some of them use lightweight plastic face shells underneath the mask to give it shape and provide a foundation for the cartoonish eyes.

>better off ditching 100% accuracy and making a rigid helmet?
Remember that cosplay isn't a 1:1 recreation of the source media, but a translation to real life. Think about the different ways superheroes look on the comic book page vs. in movies -- there's some creative wiggle room. You shouldn't aim for 100% accuracy, you should aim for what would look best on you with consideration for the source material.

This is pretty basic, recommendations for a place to buy pleated miniskirts that are good quality? I want one that's durable enough to be used for multiple cosplays, preferably lined and not polyester. I'm going to be open-minded about color/pattern for now, I just want pointers on where I can get a sturdy one since the ones I got turned out to be bad at holding pleats no matter how much I iron.
I wonder if actual school uniform shops would be good, but all I'm finding are Western ones that only have kids' stuff.

>> No.10652038

>Not polyester
>Not wrinkle
This might be the toughest to overcome? Because you're likely looking at cotton skirts and in my experience, they wrinkle easily compared to polyester as soon as you sit down and you're likely to end up with something as thin as quilting cotton. Pleated skirts require a quick iron between wears if you want the pleats to remain sharp, there's no way around it, and I recommend a cotton/polyester blend one over 100% cotton if you can help it.

There are lots of places to buy adult-sized ones. China and Japan crank out a ton for costume purposes, you'll just need to look at the usual outlets.

If you want something to fit comfortably while looking accurate make a pattern of your own with the help of a friend. Just use the classic plastic wrap and duct tape method. Maybe you could get him one of those buttons for stuffed animals that can record a voice message/sound and hide it in his clothes (assuming he’s doing the hoodie version). That way, he has easy access to it and the sound is coming from the right place.

Not sure how subtle/easy this is, but there are soundboard apps that let you upload custom audio files. Then connect your phone to a bluetooth speaker and play as you wish.

Put 2 foam rolls under the areas where you want the vents to be and heat the wig fibers up using a steamer or blowdryer. Leave the rolls there as the wig fibers cool and then once the wig is completely cool, set the vents with hairspray.

This isn't cosplay related but figured this would be the best thread to ask
I'm buying a busted pair of picrel to repair. They have painted rubber platform soles, and the paint is peeling. Would I be able to just repaint over the peeling paint? What kind of paint would work best?
