Of course they can, but that doesn't make it a good cosplay. There's degrees of separation from the source material and each can be enjoyed individually from that source which is why AU's are so popular. However, the further separated something becomes from that original source, the more indistinguishable it is. Green hair is literally the only tie to MHA that is present in that picture. She's gorgeous and the picture is lovely, but it is closer to an OC than it is to Izuku Midoriya from MHA. It's a nice outfit and lovely photo, but a horrible cosplay. That's why it's in this thread. That's the point you are so desperately in denial over.

I dunno', off-topic. I never much knew about DID until I met some people who did. Holy shit, it is a terrifying illness. However, it was entirely unlike the narrative of, yeah, pretty much what seems to be a farce. I have no doubt DID is an illness, but the terrifying part is actually learning how people with DID are, and it's heartbreaking.

Especially when you suddenly realize the stories they regurgitate depending on their 'alter' are, in fact, complete bogus, but very watered down elaborations and false memories constructed from very real events that are far more horrifying and unsettling then what they're recalling.

It's never apparent when you first meet them. They tell you, "Oh, I have DID, I needed to warn you." Time goes on, and you don't really see this fictionalized version of DID you're familiar with. I've seen other black cosplayers do this. They'll cosplay the character as a version with curly hair and also the canon-straight hair. It's kind of an AU I guess. I think it's cute. The makeup makes sense too & doesn't strike me as 'blackifying'. They've gone with a natural lip as the character is shown with. They've picked eyeshadow that matches their skin tone, sure, but the character cosplayed does use grey as the shade for the eyes versus a darker flesh tone like the neck, anti-aliasing aside. The character does appear to be illustrated as someone who wears a smoky eye so the eyelashes and liner fit. A lot of people with her skin tone will look like a ghost if they do blue-based tones seen in a typical smoky eye, they have to stick to red tones.

Ultimately though, there's no issue with 'blackifying' a character so long as they're not a vocal opponent of, say, I dunno', a white person cosplaying Kitara from Avatar, a character that's clearly meant to be Asian regarding some historical series, or that one Pokemon gym leader by claiming it to be 'whitewashing'. while I agree that fat does not equal bad, it really does throw off a cosplay if said cosplayer does not compensate for it (with makeup or properly fitting clothes or something else entirely). I've seen cosplays in this thread that look nothing like the characters in question due to how fat the cosplayer is, which leads to an objectively bad and poor looking cosplay. don't get me wrong, there are good fat cosplayers, but it's one of those things where you have to have the proportions + face for. some of these cosplayers look really nice and add to the cuteness of a character, while others look really bad and separated from the source material.

plus a minor note, I feel as if the context of a character matters and being fat can interfere. for example, there's a natsuki cosplayer in this thread who's fat, when it's a canon fact that natsuki (inadvertently) starves herself to the point where she could be considered underweight. not to say that characters with eating disorders are off limits for fat people, but sometimes with context it can seem a little bad to make a character fatter

As someone who used something similar as a coping mechanism, I at least had the common sense to keep it a secret from the world at large. Even in my fantasy, it was supposed to be a secret, not something I go spreading around everywhere, because as seriously as I took it, I still knew it was fake.

Even when I had a character "take over," so I could "rest," it was and is complete escapism, not DID. My reactions to things were compartmentalized, but not my memories or actual consciousness. It was truly all me, and a lot of raging emotion.
With actual DID, there's literally memory loss between identities. I've met someone with DID, it's often pretty difficult for them to deal with.
