This all really took off during quarantine. Kids with a little spare money & too much time on their hands wanting to become famous for their version of a character. The dangan ronpa fandom, ever since 2013, has had a huge fan culture around it, & around making your own original takes on characters. Actualmondo's sprite edits being a good example of that (rip). Communists from Real Communist States in Europe hated punk - they called punk "western degeneracy" and were doing a lot to suppress this musical movement . Wasn't tiktok, it was how common alibaba cosplays are now. Everyone and their mom can buy a cosplay without issue, so 90% of "cosplayers" just get whatever flavor of the month character that strikes their fancy instead of putting time into researching the character and actually producing something. Worse, they try to put themselves in the same category as the people that put in time to grind out cosplays. It's turned away from being a maker hobby with dedicated but skilled fans into a second rate Halloween.

I don't find any of these cosplays 'visually interesting' because there's no sole interest point. If you wanna talk about it from a cosplayers perspective, all these cosplays suck because you can't tell who they're cosplaying, and they're just not accurate.
Fashions like Decora and sub-cultures like ravers and kandi kids were obviously the inspirations for the recent eyesore accessory cosplayer, but at least there was a breakup between the accessories, and the outfits. It feels balanced and thought about, as well as thematically matched.

Let's take foam/paper wigs as an example. They can look really cool and interesting (pic related) , but creating one that looks good takes a LOT of time and effort.
