I think it’s important to remember that lots of hardcore cosplayers get out of their costumes at night to chill with friends. It’s hard to just hang out when you’re constantly getting asked for pics, have to be careful not to damage anything, can’t sit properly, can’t walk properly, can’t eat or drink, etc. (depends on the costume ofc but you get the point). Cosplayers who take off their costumes are obviously going to blend in with the normies, at least at a glance. I’ve seen tons of cosplayers during the day who look like normies late at night, and I think this contributes to the sentiment of con parties being full of normies. One time at one of my first ever cons, I was like 21, my best friend and I were walking back to the convention center from eating out down the street, it was about 11 pm, busy city, Friday night. We are stopped by these guys by the side of the road next to their party bus, they're all drunk as shit. Just shitfaced. I think I'm cosplaying Mamimi from FLCL so I look fairly normal, and my friend's in his Roxas outfit- so fairly normie but punky? Anyway they surround us and literally ferry us up INTO THEIR BUS, like almost pushing me, I swear, laughing and screaming at us "Come hang out omg you guys are dressed so coooooollll come with us come hang out with us" And we are trying to be nice but PUSH PAST THEM to get off their bus again- finally we like, stumbled down those little steps with all the guys like going, "Awwwwwwwww" at us.... Not that anon but I found out that many cosplayers would ask for a lighter to have a cigarette, from then, I struck out some conversation, usually complimenting the costume (Especially if I'm familiar with the character) or asking how did they make a particular detail like weapons or wings and how they works, showing interest from their efforts, even if you aren't that familiar with the subject helps. It also helps if you hang out with a friend who's cosplaying while you don't (I go to cons mostly to shopping for comics and mangas most of the time), you meet even more people who do the same.

Back in the 00's this guy went to a mall with a sign that said "free hugs" and gave hugs to people. It became a huge controversy and fad because "hugs are free and make people feel happy!". Of course this caught on in cons since the 00's was the birth of fagy moe shit and was abused by a ton of creeps and fagots, and of course people modifyed the fad from "free hugs" to "free (whatever)" which caused a lot of problems. Most cons have signs on a light ban now depending on what the person is doing.

Youmacon in Detroit has a lovely riverside walk way with these giant steps and plaza area that is a great place for pictures and hanging out. There's truth to both sides of that coin. Detroit actually has plenty of lovely sights and cool shops and events, but you might not see them if you're just passing through. I think because of that a lot of yuppie retards assume its just a desolate, crime-ridden wasteland which does become an extremely annoying stereotype. It IS a crime-ridden wasteland but it's a really fun place to spend a weekend if you know how to be safe and look after yourself.
