Honestly I think it's just a symptom of such a highly image based society. These kids have never NOT had access to social media. When I was a kid (I'm 26), I saw photoshopped skinny models in magazines while in waiting rooms, rarely on billboards, and when I turned on the TV. But I spent most of my time playing with dolls/reading books/playing outside, and when I started getting on the internet it was far more text based than image based - back in the days when it was common to make online friends and talk for months before even seeing each others' faces.

Now kids are bombarded with perfection (which happens to be underweight for women, or the even more unattainable slim thicc) all. the. time. Disordered eating is normalized (fasting even when you're a minor, counting calories with apps like MFP) and unless you're Eugenia Cooney level skeletal nobody will think twice about a girl with a 16 BMI who only drinks diet coke and eats one 800 calorie meal per day.

I'm 10 years older than you and I think it's moreso this than anything to do with photoshop or skinny chicks in the media. If anything, there's far more average-to-fat representation in the media now than there was in the 90s and earlier. Back then, it wasn't a controversy or secret that most models and actresses had EDs or were on insanely strict diets.

The media hasn't changed for the worse but the peer pressure has.

When I was a teen there was no social media sites. I had no idea what my online friends looked like. Most wouldn't have dreamed of sharing their real name, let alone posting personal photos. Myspace came out in '05, and a lot of people didn't post pics even there. And when they did, most were doing the Myspace angle thing, with duck lips and heavy blurring. Still, people didn't think those were realistic. The whole point of the angles and shoop was it hid the flaws we all have. Also, social media was focused around people you knew irl, so you knew what those people really looked like.

But now, everyone has social media and is posting pictures all the time for literally the whole world to look at. Photoshop and filters are completely normalized and easy to use. You're looking at thousands of pics of "real" people, far more than you'll ever see irl, and you never see what they really look like without the Insta angles/filters. It bombards kids with a completely impossible standard, and tells them it's totally legit and achievable bc look at all these thousands of influencers who've managed it.

I think part of the problem is how kids are raised to treat the internet, too. I'm a college student so on the younger side, but from when I was a kid I was taught to NEVER share personal information, photos, etc. on the internet. To anyone.

So for the majority of my time as a lolita I just followed blogs and brand photos. It's only within the past year or so that I finally got an IG. No ED and I only cringe minutely at my ita phase.

A handful of plus sized actresses does not representation make. There is also the way these actresses are presented. The women hailed for their beauty and sex appeal are usually very thin or if they aren't, have dramatic hourglass proportions. Actresses who are not are usually praised for their talent and not their looks. And as nice as it is to be recognized for your abilities, most people want to be seen as pretty. You'll take being Jennifer Lawrence over Melissa McCarthy any day.

This. I'm 32 and discords, Instagram facebook, reddit people and teens are so quick and freely able to post themselves online and having grown up on 4chan that shit irks me to hell and back.
