https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2020/06/19/gaylord-national-files-huge-layoff-notice.html

>The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor filed a layoff notice June 15 affecting its 2,077 employees as the coronavirus pandemic continues to pummel the hospitality industry.

>The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the Maryland Department of Labor lists an effective date of March 11. The Gaylord, Greater Washington's largest hotel at 1,996 rooms, has been closed since March 24, when the owner of all seven Gaylord resort properties across the country suspended operations.

So much for those cons coming back anytime soon.

Bummer to hear it, there were some nice places to shoot at the Wardman. Still, I'm not surprised to hear that the northwest hotels have suffered since the Gaylord and the Marriott Marquis opened in 2008 and 2014. I'm sure the Wardman will reopen as some very nice luxury condos/apartments down the road, it's too close to the metro station to stay empty for long.

If the DMV re-opens by September/October then AUSA should merge with Escape Velocity out at the Gaylord. Escape Velocity had 4,800 attendees in 2018 and AUSA can't have more than 5,000 in a normal year, so smashing them together and accounting for covid decreasing attendance, they'll leave the Gaylord well-occupied but not too full.

First, even though Katsucon's staff pretends otherwise, Katsucon is a cosplay con and half the attendees would stop coming if they didn't get the pretty Gaylord. Second, Otakon's con center is too big for Katsucon. It's actually too big for Otakon -- there's sizable chunks of it that AwesomeCon uses but Otakon doesn't. Third, the hotel situation for Otakon kind of sucks -- if you don't get one of the immediately adjacent hotels, it's a half-mile trek through downtown DC, which will get you a lot more weird stares than walking across National Harbor.

DC, Maryland Virgina really needs to deploy contact tracers to check up on Katsu attendees and Gaylord employees. Another fun fact is that a CPAC attendee tested positive for covid as well.

I get a con can't *really* control their layout. It ultimately comes down to what you have to work with at the venue but at the Gaylord literally all the programming is shoved into rooms that are cornered off that you have to take an elevator to get to. There is no reason to even walk of there if your aren't going to programing. At least at cons like youma, ohayo and acen you do constant have to walk by programing rooms so if something catchs your eye you could just walk in. Also no, plenty of cons have cab focused game rooms. Katsu just doesn't.

The Governors of the DMV do not even feel comfortable sending their government workers back to work and there are hundreds of thousands of us..so I hightly doubt Katsu will happen in a place where you are so close to each other that at times it’s hard to breathe. The only way I see conventions coming back is if there is a vaccine finally made. The risk is just still too high if the virus is still around and you have people from coming out of state and even out of country to a huge event like this. You can’t obviously who comes from where and of course who can be a carrier but not show symptoms.

I’ve been saying this for years now, but it’ll never happen because Katsu refuses to acknowledge that people really only go to cosplay. There are so many talented cosplayers that go already to take photos, so they don’t even have to put that much more effort in to draw a talented crowd to their masq.

Mag will probably wait until last minute. Iirc cons can’t claim any insurance and will lose their deposits if they cancel themselves even though it’s because of the pandemic. They're not completely in the hole, yet, but the writing is on the wall. With cancellation of MAGStock, and now MAGWest going virtual, they know they're going to be hurting when Super goes virtual as well. They're also applying for educational grants, under the guise of "Furthering the Education of Video Games, and Video Game Culture" since they're full 501(c)(3) non-profit, thanks to them kissing up to the Smithsonian. Gotta pay that cushy office staff, the rest of the free volunteers be damned.

I'm definitely not the only "insider", since their internal policies concerning communication security are an absolute joke. It took them well over 2+ years to discover some of their old registration subdomains had been hijacked to peddle spyware as Playstation 2 guides. Other tidbits from internal land include them asking if there was a way to preemptively curtail negative ratings of the "Take This!" SJW mental health panels/group from Guidebook, along with hoping people will buy tons of MAGWest merch during the virtual event. Oh, and the guide of how to apply for Maryland Unemployment if things do go tits up in the future. Big Adam is off of the BoD, and Dom will be resigning soon due to "burn-out", but they said they same thing when they all but forced control away from Brendan before MAGFest X/10. Former CEO Nick royally fucked things up, pushing MAGFes to use Experient for their hotel management, and we all know how well that's gone over the past few years. Wrap it up, these cons are officially done.

https://wtop.com/coronavirus/2020/07/prince-georges-county-coronavirus-update-july-31/

>Prince George’s County, Maryland, is setting a new 50-person limit to gatherings that will go into effect Saturday amid an uptick in new coronavirus cases.

>The new restriction starts 5 p.m. Saturday, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks announced Friday evening.

>“What this is really aimed at is the family gatherings, the parties and those other large kinds of activities,” John Erzen, Alsobrooks’ deputy chief of staff, told WTOP.

>“We are not afraid to take decisive action to protect the health and well-being of our residents; and at this point, the data tells us that this new restriction is unfortunately necessary,” Alsobrooks said in a statement.

People are speculating that if conventions aren't able to resume within the next year so even the bigger ones will probably go belly up. I'm not exactly sure if it's true or not, but most of these conventions aren't profit right? I know fuck all about conventional logistics, but some of the old heads that have been staffing and any conventions for at least 15 to 20 plus years are saying that even some of the bigger conventions that are well established with sponsors are starting to sweat bullets if they can't have an event within the next year. Even with conventions that have sponsors, those sponsors have taken a hit because the conditions they sponsor haven't been able to operate so even they can't make money.

I have a feeling that newer smaller conventions probably will not survive well if at all and the bigger ones are going to take a massive hit for the next couple of years.

Cons aren't like when a factory closes down and is out of commission it takes a significant effort to get back started again.

I'm not worried. As long as hotels, planes, etc.. core infrastructure is in place cons will happen.

Most of what it takes to run a successful con is in human capital not money or hard assets. There will be restructuring in some of these for profit cons, but aside from that we should be fine to resume as soon as we can have large events.

>> No.10474071

>>10473930
I could see it going lots of ways.

- Small cons might survive if they have no assets/overhead that they have to pay for until the next con.

- Large cons might survive if they can borrow until the next con. If you've been in the black for ten years and the only thing that stopped you from being in the black this year is the pandemic, you should be able to get a loan.

- We might see a resurgence of the shoestring budget high school/college anime club-hosted anime con that can be funded entirely by club dues.

- Corporations that are doing well in the pandemic might buy up non-profit cons for their name/fanbase/goodwill and cover their operating costs until they can be profitable again. Or maybe just buy naming rights like sports stadiums. Either way, I think we're going to see Netflix Anime Expo and Animazement By Amazon and shit.

- Cons might merge.

It's a difficult thing to really put in perspective. As I previously stated, I know fuck all about convention logistics... I don't know what conventions are and aren't in the black. I know sometimes in the US are hemorrhaging money, and you can definitely tell which ones are by the ones that still insist on having an event even though there's a fucking pandemic going on. I'm not too concerned about the bigger conventions, because those have been around for so long that they probably are pretty decently in the black. I know DragonCon is okay, and since they partnered with MomoCon or vice versa, MomoCon is okay as well.

Anime weekend Atlanta on the other hand though, I'm not so sure about. They have been around for a while, however I'm not sure what their finances look like. they made the call to not have an in-person event even though the venue is open for business, so I'm guessing they can not have an event this year and still be okay.

Another thing that conventions have to worry about that is beyond their control are the venues that they are hosted at closing down because the venues couldn't generate revenue during the pandemic so they went out of business. But then again, I'm not sure if that's a possibility or not.

Katsucon 2020 was like the last hurrah of my old life or some shit. It's so bizarre. At that time, everything seemed wonderful, normal and carefree, like it would last forever. Since then, COVID hit, my wife went crazy and filed for divorce, ghosting all our friends, selling her car and moving to another country (I shit you not), half the places I used to frequent went out of business, I moved out of our old home of nearly a decade, and have sold thousands of dollars of my things and am now buying a house and renting the apartment above the garage to my best friend who lost his would-be life long job in another state. This year has been madness and felt like a decade has passed. Katsu 2020 was like the last hurrah before I shifted into another reality.
