there have certainly been some ugly prints i would not pay money for, like AP Girly Sticker, but if someone gave it to me for free then I'd wear it. So overall the worst is that trevor brown shit, because i would not wear it even if it was free. was that even this year? it's all blurring together.

IW's main piece designs. I just find their post 2018 designs so unflattering and boring. And it's not just poor material choices. They only know three cuts these days: Tiered JSK's, underbust JSK and Long OP's. VM starts to annoy me as well with their constant OP releases, but I can forgive them because what they come up with is pretty and nice quality.

Print and design-wise I think AP had some great releases. But I think Meta's move towards multiple sizes and emphasizing their basics series is going to be a huge boost for the brand.

AatP. All of their releases looked really bad. The prints were ugly and on their solids the fabrics looked so cheap and shiny, with puckered seams and stuff. It was a rough year.

You have no idea how badly I want to say VM, but I'm going with Moitie. I think AATP, Sheglit and Meta also had relatively strong releases but Moitie gets extra points for having someone to liaise with the English-speaking community and for actually taking suggestions.

MMM's accessory releases these past couple of months were inspiring! I love their coffin lace headdress and more recently their rosette headdress

I'd hate to generalize but while I sometimes eye AATP's non print releases, their print releases this year have been a disaster. It's a shame because this is the same brand who did one of my favorite stained glass prints.

Innocent World, and I like tea length dresses. I absolutely hate their poly - it never falls well even with the right length petti - and their cotton releases are noticeably thinner and stiffer than before.

Im so disappointed, I just received my Cotton Candy feet shoes and I want to like them but they're just.... kind of sad and cheap looking for $70 shoes. Anyone else have a bad experience or am I being too critical? :(

It depends what season it was designed for. Some fabrics used aren't as thick so it really helps to know the weight. I also try to find their older items using real fur for that extra warmth.

I hope so. They managed to pull burgundy off, so I'm hoping they can resolve the factory issues.

It's light, airy and has the most wonderful pleats and ruffles. The butt ruffle is honestly the best part about it as well as the ability to pull it into a bustle. I love everything about it even if I only find myself wearing it on fancy occasions.

Regular coats don't inherently look like shit with lolita. Some classic coats (and dresses for that matter) look super normie already to me as a sweet lolita. Depending on the cut and substyle of lolita you're wearing it could easily look fine, just not as nice as a lolita coat in most instances.

@ everyone wearing normie coats with lolita, do you take your petti off or where are you getting normie coats that can be buttoned/zipped up over lolita? I stopped buying normie outerwear since I couldn't button it above a petti. Short coats or open coats, even if just the bottom half, lets in loads of cold air in my personal experience so I couldn't justify it

Of note, I haven't really felt the need, but if you're out for extended periods of time (think 40 min or more) I used to wear toe warmers when skiing. That might be more useful. Toe warmers are kind of proof that everyone gets cold toes, even if they're wearing north face and wool socks with their ski boots.

That's not what they were talking about. I know exactly what they mean. North face and weird puffy windbreaker jackets with a sweet or gothic coord was common in my old comm, nobody was wearing a nice wool peacoat. We never stayed outside longer than maybe 30 minutes to walk places. The weather would be from 45-35 F at the fall meets, above freezing or I wouldn't go.

All the lolita coats I have are comfy at this temp besides the sweatshirt type AP parkas. Usually I can stay out for about an hour or two in my AP or Baby coats depending on the wind

In a sense it's accurate. AP definitely "defines" sweet lolita, and lolita as a whole to some extent. It's the biggest and most successful brand with the most international reach. It's had the highest number of iconic blood bath releases. It tends to be one of the earliest to jump on trends or lead them. And of all the brands it's probably had the most reach outside of our jfash community, in that it's been worn by celebrities and normies who are into 'harajuku style' and kawaii things might recognize the brandname.

I think noobs and permaitas pick up on that and it makes them mad. They might be able to squeeze into some lame secondhand meta fully-shirred skirt, or bodyline, get a fattychan dress from taobao, but they can't afford/fit the cool dresses. And either they wind up in comms surrounded by girls who CAN wear AP and other nice brands while they're in shitty clothes, so they get bitter. I guess I never really knew what lolita looks like to outsiders and newbies, if I had to pick a defining brand it would be either btssb with shimotsuma monogatari (kamikaze girls), or Moitie with Mana/Malice Mizer. It would depend on what the alteration was and how skillfully it was done. For the most part I'd consider the piece "damaged" and even if I'd be happy to buy it I wouldn't pay full price.

But on the other hand I could see paying even $150 for something really awesome, like... idk, if someone took a Guardian Unicorn dress and turned it into a Cinema Doll style skirt. I think 10-20 years ago that would be accurate about BtssB and MmM being the defining brands! A lot of lolitas who joined the fashion in the late 90s to late 00s got interested through visual kei or jfash-centered media like kamikaze girls and Nana. Lots of people also got into it because of anime like Kuroshit, or other weeb interests.

But I think that's shifted a lot in the last decade. A lot of that stuff is 20 years old now, or more. It's dated. Lolita and mainstream fashion have both changed a lot, but I think the biggest change is how people are introduced to the fashion. Now most people will find it on instagram, or they'll discover it through some related cute asian fashion style. There's a lot less weebs and a lot more kpop stans. And the brand they'll see the most of is AP, which shapes their perspective of the fashion as a whole.

Moitie matters to us oldfags because to us Mana-sama is like the king of the whole fashion. But to someone who joined in the last five years Moitie is probably less relevant than Boz or Sheglit. Likewise with Baby, Vivienne Westwood, etc.

When they reattached the skirt they completely re-gathered it evenly all around. None of this side panel triangle-shaped dart garbage. Gosh that dreamy dollhouse is hard to look at. The way it’s a triangle that comes down so that the zipper part didn’t have to get re-set is awful. Bad. Bad alteration.

Relavent question: I'm altering a mini sleeve JSK for height. I plan to take out the waistband and then frankenstein the middle of the regular JSK to add length to both the bodice and skirt. My original plan was to add it all to the bodice but if the torso is too long in proportion to the skirt it looks strange. I've seen that happen in custom taobao dresses. I'm not sure if the fabric of the skirt is the same width at the top and gathered so its possible to add length without it being strange.

If I ever do slight alterations to improve the fit of a dress (longer straps mostly solve the majority of my issues), I also like to add pockets/a second pocket. If I'm going to "ruin" a dress, may as well increase functionality.

Maybe it's because I have made my own clothes for years, but I find it so much easier to make a dress from scratch than alter an existing dress. I've altered a couple dresses and they turn out nicely because I spend time finding matching trim, looking for less desirable damaged pieces for extra matching fabric so I can preserve waist ties, etc., but I would rather just find some cute kokka border print cotton and a nice comfortable lining fabric and make my own if I want an OTT sweet look, or solids, velvets, and allover florals for handmade old school.

I'm probably somewhat biased because I don't really get obsessed with specific prints in lolita to the point I feel like I HAVE to have them and wear them to appreciate them and enjoy the fashion.

I have this same line of thought, but somehow I'm still always lusting after some brand stuff. Not even because of something as shallow as the print, but ironically enough, because I can sew, sometimes it's the fabric that gets me.

It's great that we can now buy yuwa, kokka, spoonflower prints, but I've never been able to find chocolate jacquards, cute sweet flocked fabric, or whatever that stuff that SDC is made of. Not only that, they're pretty consistently one level above others -- the screen printed Kingdom dress from Baroque might look similar to SDC but the drape, the fabric, the level of detailing are entirely different. I've bought lolita-printed polyester from taobao brands, and also bought AP polyester dresses, and quite frankly they don't really compare. As much as cgl wants to diss AP polyester most of the time it just drapes better and is much hardier than the other stuff.

I mean, I agree it's easier to just make a dress from scratch, but I can still see why people would take a dress and alter it just because the materials are just rare and different. Even the fabric for Dreamy Dollhouse is cotton twill, which kokka/yuwa/etc rarely use, or maybe they just really like the novelty embroidered tulle lace, or whatever else.

For the jacquard, you could probably do pretty much any sweet theme and it'd be pretty novel, what's commercially available is usually grandma couch florals. You could pretty much just arrange them the old fashioned way (like a damask pattern, but with candy and cake instead of florals).

Do post your findings, I always believed the machine setup costs made it so it's difficult to custom it in small quantities; it'll be interesting to find someplace that will do it. Heck I'd even take 10metres of it, the rest can probably be dyed different colourways or something. So long as I don't have to commit to, like, 300yards of it.

There's a lot of makerspaces for rent now, apparently some libraries have them too, so lasercutting isn't really expensive (I don't think it was expensive to begin with, any signmaker can usually custom cut some acrylic, just that they might not want to deal with small fry customers who aren't ordering large signboards or 100s of corporate gifts). So if you want to be a third AH/DP, this actually isn't hard or expensive to try out.

Where I think people get lazy is with finishing the edges so that they don't cut you, cute designs that aren't directly copying AP, and with getting interesting matching findings -- there's something about the plastic stuff, you can't really just whack it on a metal finding and call it a day, there's gotta be some shiny beads around it or something, otherwise it does really look like a piece of plastic on a metal chain.

They're not cotton but some cheap polyester so they'd absolutely melt. I'll probably take the lace off and use it for something else and make pillows out of them or accessories for when/if I ever buy the real ones. (I did think about that one poor anon's ironboard case, classic)

Did they disappoint you by having fatty sizes at all or are the normal sizes now too big? I had always heard Meta standard sizes sort of always ran a little big even before the plus and plus plus sizes. They're also catering to tallitas too, to be fair, in addition to fats.

Depends on your coord I guess. Personally I think kumakumya would be better as she's nearly the same colour as the cookies anyway. The white usakumya you probably want to check whether her bow colours go okay with the rest of your coord, and whether she's too white for your coord.

If you're asking about mixing brands, you should know that the black usakumya comes with blue eyes and girls commonly match that version with black x blue Moitie.
