I'm "only" early 30s, but I think a problem a lot of cosplayers around my age are failing to comprehend is that they can't get away with cosplaying middle/high school characters any more so are giving up completely rather than deciding to cosplay anyone older.

But I guess there's way less prestige in complying older side characters or less popular shows with mostly older characters.

Since we already know the currently-accepted age limit on cosplay is 35, what does /cgl/ think of this? Should it be even lower, say 25? At what age should one stop playing dress-up in order to not be creepy, an eyesore, or get in the way of the younger generation?

>> No.10469190

>>10469188
Nah, let people have fun. Maybe don't go around trying to make money from cosplay (and adjacent non-careers) after 30, but there's no real harm from someone in their 40s dressed up as their favourite anime character.

>> No.10469192

>>10469188
Not only are people staying youthful for longer than the past but those who 'look their age' still have many options. Dress younger or pick a character who's closer to your age. Are you a balding man and a Star Trek fan? Cosplay Picard. Like Disney princesses but look 40? There are plenty of moms and older female villains in princess movies. Etc etc.

>> No.10469195

>>10469192
I like this way of thinking, if more people tried cosplaying characters that fit their body type instead of just whatever their favorite was, there would be a lot less gross and cringe cosplays

>> No.10469225

They can keep playing dress up but when you reach 40 like Yaya you should really stop thotting and showing off your tits. Cosplay more modest characters.

>> No.10469229

Nothing wrong with people in their 40's dressing up. Heck I don't even mind 40 somethings dressed up as teenagers, as long as they don't act creepy or obnoxious next to the younger cosplayers. There's absolutely no harm in a 45-year old DBZ fan wanting to have fun als teenager Bulma or Yamcha.

Zoomers like to put older cosplayers down for looking older and "gross" really. Stop being a little bitch and let other people have fun.

It's still creepy when a 40+ year old person is dressed up as a teen and trying to join meets etc to interact with actual teens who are appropriately aged for the fandom they're in. It's weird even if he's respectful. He's old enough to be someone's dad.

>> No.10469247

>>10469243

Most 40 year old cosplayers don't actually join meets with teenagers since they know damn well it could become uncomfortable for all who are involved. They mostly hang out with other older cosplayers, while dressed up as teenagers, and there's nothing wrong with that. 40 somethings are allowed to have fun, just like you have when you reach that age.

Sure, there are a few creepers but every age groups has it own weirdo's.

>>10469247
Agreed. I also personally think there are way more predatory shits in their 20s/30s anyway who prey on the younger demographics, especially because they can sort of "pass" for looking younger while emotionally and socially being inappropriately older than the people they're hanging out with.

I'm 41

Started cosplaying when I was 18 back in the late 90s.
I don't like what it has become with the having to be a model, not crediting the actual maker on your posts, sex sex sex cosplay all the time for some folks.

But as said in >>10469653, you get much better at ignoring shit as you get older.

I just think to myself, well that's nice...I'm glad you are having fun but it comes with caveats:

*looks are gonna fade real quick, and it's gonna look more and more obvious as you fight it. So don't.
*internet keeps track. Don't be a dick, we will know forever if you conveniently didn't mention you hired GSTQ to sew for you in your photos/stream/ect.
*again, sex is fine. I mean it's everywhere else so why not inundate your cosplay with it. But again that shit last forever and can follow you forever if a busybody work finds out and plasters it on an email to the office/your boss. Also your body isn't going to last forever so I don't know if that albatross is worth it following you around a decade later.
We still punish the shit out of women who dare use their own body.

Have some vintage 20 yr old Yaya

No way, never quit! Imagine the possibilities of characters as you get older, anyway! You can still cosplay the young characters, just don't expect people to gush over it like they will their peers of the same age. But people in your age group or people who respect the craft will love it! And then there's the characters you can only really pull off well with age. I'm waiting for the day I can do a Mrs McGonagall cosplay without slathering myself in aging makeup. But in the meantime, sometimes I do use prosthetics to look less like myself (older, stranger, etc) or a bit of photoshop to take off the bits of age showing in my face. I'm doing this for me. My passion will never die. Fuck the haters. Millennials grew up during one of the biggest anime waves right when cosplay went mainstream, so we’re going to see a lot more older cosplayers really soon. I just started watching star trek the original series after watching like 3 seasons of the second generation (I grew up seeing both but more 2nd gen and more a few moments as a time and often never full episodes).

Is the OP photo of Yeoman Janice Rand in the original Star trek? I'm only on season 1 episode 3 I think. Just finished the Charlie X episode.

Yah I know people will say omg you've never seen original ST? Fuck, I just watched Totoro and Naussica for the first time last year. Fuck where has all the time gone. Seems like yesterday in JHS/HS having fun with friends. I'm way over 40. 2 months till my 55th and thinking of doing my first cosplay but think it is too late for me.

I pissed her off at her booth before but she was low key about it but could tell by the way she was giving me the eye. I too thoguht someone was manning her booth while she was out checking the con or washroom. Thoguht maybe a family member was sitting in when she said 'can I help you' and I said 'yah I'm looking for yaya but I guess she stepped out. I'll come back later' and I think she took offence to me not recognizing her there when I really thoguht she was someone else much older. The booth didnt have anyone else coming up to tslk to her then so I thought it wssnt here.It was ackward when I went back later to see other people taking pics with her when I miss took her as someone else. Not sure if they just wanted the booth owner in the photo or be in the photo with them I asked if yaya was in which fielded a group of people giving me the eye then one people said you're looking at her. Oh god...I turned green inside. Yaya was nice about it and did not mention my coming by before but you can see that eye she gave me was just a stabbing look of implying she is old and unrecognizable outside of photos. FML

Because that gets harder as you age.
What worked as a diet at 22 does not work at 29. It changes again at 35.
We got other shit to do like actual jobs, sometimes kids mess up the body, entire houses to look after and not just a room, ect.

It would be nice to just pay attention to everything we eat but life is just often structured where other things are far more important to tend to. So you can only do what you can.

As you get older you're more likely to cosplay what befits you rather than based solely on what you like.
You get a bit more concious over the fact you're unlikely to properly portray a graceful elf, but you're more than capable of delivering a sturdy dwarf, so you adjust accordingly.

Tho this may go a bit more hand-in-hand with the years you've spent in the scene and the cynisicm you've built up over the years, but at some point you acknoledge that no, you don't and never will look like that edgy teen anime protag, so just don't, and go for something you can do credit.

I always wonder why male cosplayers are so reluctant to get a wig. At least you're blond, but they'll avoid it no matter how different their hair is. Meanwhile female cosplayers will almost always go ahead and use a wig even if the character's hair is the same color and length as theirs in order to eliminate even a bad hair day from compromising that feature.
