I'm "only" early 30s, but I think a problem a lot of cosplayers around my age are failing to comprehend is that they can't get away with cosplaying middle/high school characters any more so are giving up completely rather than deciding to cosplay anyone older.

But I guess there's way less prestige in complying older side characters or less popular shows with mostly older characters.

Just cosplay an adult character. I am 24 right now but I have always cosplayed characters from movies and they are already portrayed by adult actors anyway.

I don't like what it has become with the having to be a model, not crediting the actual maker on your posts, sex sex sex cosplay all the time for some folks.

*looks are gonna fade real quick, and it's gonna look more and more obvious as you fight it. So don't.
*internet keeps track. Don't be a dick, we will know forever if you conveniently didn't mention you hired GSTQ to sew for you in your photos/stream/ect.
*again, sex is fine. I mean it's everywhere else so why not inundate your cosplay with it. But again that shit last forever and can follow you forever if a busybody work finds out and plasters it on an email to the office/your boss. Also your body isn't going to last forever so I don't know if that albatross is worth it following you around a decade later.

You can still cosplay the young characters, just don't expect people to gush over it like they will their peers of the same age. But people in your age group or people who respect the craft will love it! And then there's the characters you can only really pull off well with age. As you get older you're more likely to cosplay what befits you rather than based solely on what you like.
You get a bit more concious over the fact you're unlikely to properly portray a graceful elf, but you're more than capable of delivering a sturdy dwarf, so you adjust accordingly.

I'm 55 and my wife is 60 and while we're not into cosplay we do spend an inordinate amount of money and time on Ren Faire costumes. Does that count? I've had this idea in my head for some time that I'd like to go to a con and I've even started working on a costume. I'm kind of fat and love Judge Dredd so I was thinking of mashing up the movie Dredd and The Simpsons by doing a "Judge Wiggum" costume. Too stupid?

Speaking of Jurassic Park cosplay's I've seen someone cosplaying as Owen Grady from Jurassic World (this was at the time when the movie came out I saw this at a Comic Con in London, England) being with a guy in a dinosaur costume made entirely out of balloons with his head in a green bodysuit in the middle of the balloon animal dinosaur

I am really annoyed of people not cosplaying their body type.
I'm not saying you need to get jojo-tier built, but cosplaying a fat character as a stick or vice versa looks unusual as hell.
and, if I can get my fellow weebs to put some effort into their personal appearance and well being, then so be it.

I met a cosplayer in his mid 40s who did amazingly on l Lucius Malfoy cosplay. Talked to him for a long time, really awesome dude. Photos I took with him have been lost to time sadly.

I always wonder why male cosplayers are so reluctant to get a wig. At least you're blond, but they'll avoid it no matter how different their hair is. Meanwhile female cosplayers will almost always go ahead and use a wig even if the character's hair is the same color and length as theirs in order to eliminate even a bad hair day from compromising that feature. Is there a reason guys hate wigs?
