I don't have tattoos myself, but my sister uses MAC face and body and some random concealer. theoretically any high coverage foundation would work, but the MAC product is designed for body use and comes in bigger bottles because of that. if it's something you need to do a often maybe take that into consideration. keep in mind that your face shade may not be the same as your body shade. i found a video using similar products to the ones mentioned above. https://youtu.be/c1ElV3hrEgQ

How would I go about adding armor to a zentai suit? My current thought was to craft the neon bits in foam and hot glue/velcro them on but would it be better to put it underneath? Any good resources for working with zentai?

NTA but you would basically make an understructure like a bulletproof vest, attach the armor pieces to that, and pull it on over your head and fasten it on the sides with velcro.

This tutorial should be helpful to you. I'd suggest watching the whole thing just to get an understanding of how the bodysuit is adjusted for attachment. Do not use hotglue though, it'll pop off as soon as you stretch the fabric to get inside or move, making you very sad. Velcro would be a better option since it can stretch with the fabric if sewn in. incorrect. you need understructure so the armor on top doesn't shift. the understructure keeps the suit from moving with your body which allows you to attach velcro to the areas the armor needs to go.

Okay thank you, basically I'm somebody who's ordered from AliExpress before (only once) and while I was relatively happy with what I got, it's the usual nylon kinda deal. So I ended up finding two that I liked most but I just don't have an eye for things at all.

Sorry to get back to you so late, busy work week. My bid is for the Aliexpress link. Neither site discloses what material is used to make the jackets, but they look extremely similar. I think the CosplayShopper photo is just taken with different lighting. The fabric doesn't show any signs of being better quality or anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they came from the same factory desu. Also, the CosplayShopper website seems sus as fuck and since there aren't many reviews if any out there, I'd say go with Ali.

I'm not the best with fabrics and you should definitely wait to hear the opinion of someone better at choosing them than I am before making the leap to purchase anything, but my initial reaction is that you'll want a natural fiber fabric like linen or muslin maybe? Something with a visible weave. It looks like the cosplayer used a decorative stitch to make it look rustic too. Either way, I hope you find the fabric you're looking for and pull of the cosplay!

Hey, thanks for the reply anon. The only thing that's putting me off is how wrinkly the front of the AliExpress one looks, I've never seen a jacket looking that wrinkled up.
Also I do think these are actually different, because you can tell the logo on the front is very different when you inspect them closely.

In a pinch you could try one of those crayon lipstick tutorials (just make sure you get nontoxic crayons). I had pretty good success making some a while back, but I had to experiment with the oil component to find one with good spread and coverage.

What are those Mecha girl cosplays with the follow-me eyes called? I've been trying to find videos of them on YouTube for ages to show a friend and have had no luck.
Normally they're dressed in Japanese apparel but their mask are robotic and have solid eyes that glow in the center and do the follow-me optical illusion.

Actually the main reason people think you can't use makeup products on different areas of the face is because you shouldn't use them on both out of the same container since there's a chance of bacterial contamination. the ingredients have little to do with it unless they are natural irritants like mint or flavorings.

Addendum: Thankfully voluminous skirts have been worn for hundreds of years so depending on your final desired drape and shape, you have additional options such as spray starch, hoop skirts, and horsehair braid. I would look at pictures of garments using these techniques because some of them may not be the effect you're looking for. You also have a LOT of options when it comes to petticoat materials so definitely do some research into each one. I don't know if you're making the costume shown in your photo or not so I can't recommend a specific material, but if you're gonna have bare legs under your skirt like the picture I would strongly advise against hard tulle because it will scratch up your legs and feel awful and itchy

JFC I cannot for the life of me attach elastic to swimwear.
I'm trying to sew on 1/4 inch braided elastic and this shit keeps slipping around everywhere when I try to sew it down and ends up looking like a crackhead sewed it. Am I using the wrong elastic? I just bought this crap from my local fabric store. How the hell do you guys do it? I watched loads of videos of people doing it so effortlessly, and every time I try running through my machine, either the band will drift off the needle path, or the fabric below will slip out from under it.

Definitely some sort of rough cotton or linen, but broadcloth could be weathered enough to work. One of the hardest parts of sewing cosplays is picking the right fabric for the specific use-case (ie. converting a 2D look into the real world). I would highly recommend going to a store and just looking at all the varieties; you definitely want to feel it and see if it's rough enough for your purpose.

So I want to do a Splatoon cosplay, and of course my favorite weapon is the N-Zap 85. I bought one for like $5 and I'm planning on taking all the electronics out of it to make it easier to carry around. What are the odds I wouldn't be allowed to bring it into an American con setting?

All cons post their prop rules and guidelines in advance, and many will still have their rules from last yet posted somewhere on the web.

Regardless of wear you go I would highly recommend painting the tip orange or putting a removable piece on the end of the barrel that is painted orange.

If you wanted to go the extra mile you could place an effect on the end of the barrel that looks like the gun is in the middle of splatting ink, though this would make it harder to carry around.

Kira's outfit is very distinct and the color of the suit and shirt are THE most defining aspects of his outfit. If you see someone turned around across the con in a light purple suit, you can basically bet it's a Kira cosplayer. Very iconic. I wouldn't try to pick alternative colors. Cosplay at it's core is about having enough confidence to wear weird shit out in public, a full suit in a slightly wacky color doesn't start to scratch the surface of it.

Cliff notes:

Get a brown wig. If you can find one with a green colorblend that you feel confident in, then get it. If not, then you could try doing the sharpie/copic technique to do a top layer tone over. Or just get comfortable with the brown.

The are essential to making sure everyone in a mile radius of you doesn't want to beat your ass for getting paint on their clothes. You can still hear the screams of ancient homestucks today shouting to seal your fucking paint.

Also like the other anon said, contouring is especially important for your face because the paint will cover your brows and any definition in your face. However, don't use regular colored bronzer or highlight, you should use eye shadow colors that compliment the body paint shade. There's plenty of tutorials online.

I've had this wig from Lucaille which is a Dead Master wig from BRS which is very close to the color that you're looking for, problem is, it's already been phased out. Try looking for a Dead Master wig that's a same shade (or maybe find the same one in a 2nd hand market) instead and just trim the side burns (the back is already short) rather than dyeing an entire wig, less work that way.

Depends on the fit of the garment. I'd suggest reading the reviews to see if it has stretch, runs small or large and then pour over the sizing chart. Any garment you wear needs about 1-2 inches of room for movement. NEVER round down, always round up. For example, if you're a 36 bust and the size M is a 35 bust, go for the large even if its a 38 bust.

The cleanest and most durable method would be to use iron on vinyl transfer paper. You could use the same method for the cuffs and hat(?). If you're really concerned about durability, you could even baste and satin stitch the edges to ensure they'll last a decade. A cricut would make cutting faster, but you could definitely do it without.

What's so hard about putting it on a flat surface while you paint? Obviously putting something on the inside so it doesn't bleed through. I've used fabric paint on stretchy nylon with a combination of masking tape and stencils with no problems.

Let me preface this by saying I have never made a bra before and I'm also a guy.

I'm trying to make pic related for my girlfriend. A bikini top that's secured at the front with a square knot.

Seemed pretty straightforward, only thing is the girl in the video has relatively average bust and the top sits nicely on her.
My girlfriend has J cups. Even after adjusting for her cup size, it simply doesn't sit nicely on her. It's like trying to wrap a sheet of fabric around a ball; wrinkles and folds every which way and it just looks ridiculous. There is very little coverage at the square knot, naturally since the breast portions of the top are being pinched off at the middle.

I really am clueless as to what I'm doing here, I've hacked at this for over a week straight and have nothing to show for it. Do I have to create bra cups? Do I need to integrate underwire? Am I even able to secure the front with just a square knot?
I'm at the point that I'm willing to spend money on a premade pattern that has been proven to work on large cup sizes.

Wholesome. Try adding bust darts (armpit to apex or "waist" to apex, but I'd suggest the first option). It's a simple solution that should remove that extra bunched up fabric from trying to shape the curved surface.

That sounds more like a problem with the design than what you are trying to do. Perhaps adjusting the front shape to something like pic related would be more flattering for your girlfriend? If she has a bra, sports bra, bathing suit, or any type of top that you can copy for your pattern, that might make it easier on you to find something that suits her best. Also, that knot is definitely going to come undone with just a little bit of movement. God forbid your girlfriend decides to jog a few steps in it, she'll be free tiddy in the wind. I'd suggest securing the knot permanently with hand stitches like you would do for a bow and then adding a bra closure to the back section.

Take a deep breath. You're doing this for a great reason and sometimes ironing out the wrinkles takes longer than you expect. Don't be so harsh on yourself. She's going to love it.

The cups and underwire would fix support issues but not necessarily a fit issue if that makes sense? Like adding cups or a wire isn't going to make the fabric stop bunching up if that's the problem, but they will support the biddies.

The darts are actually a pretty good idea and I might try this on my test piece, it's sort of what I was thinking when talking about making cups. The minor issue is that I'm using a plaid pattern (it's a swimwear fabric), so I'm a little concerned if I start darting it, the pattern might look janky/frankensteined if that makes sense?

I will try to make another test iteration with what you depicted. I have been trying to copy measurements off her bathing suit top, but that one has underwire, cups, the works on it. So it's a little difficult to pattern off that and translate it to a flat breast piece. I definitely will secure the knot with thread though, I had the same concern about it coming undone.

I don't think support is necessarily an issue, the top straps are adjustable (based on how far she pulls them), which in inself creates a lift. I just thought I needed cups and underwire to stiffen and contour her shape better.

Also thanks for the words of encouragement. This project has gotten me frustrated to say the least, but I don't want to give up on it.

The biggest issue you have is that you are inexperienced with alterations, which are actually much trickier to do than you'd think. Any time there's unusual geometry on the person's body (ie. someone is overweight, or is bustier than average as you said) the pattern must be changed around.

I recommend you just sit down with you girlfriend, and start pinning the fabric at various points. See what works and what doesn't. Look up some standard alterations (notably darts) that people do to adjust bras for different breast sizes, and try imitating them in how the fabric folds.

Sewing is basically fabric origami. It's a lot of trial and error.

That outfit still seems way too much for a beginner, what with the precise detailing and the crisp pressed seams.
If you've never sewn at all you need to pick a character that doesn't take much to be recognizable and requires only simple sewing. For example, someone like Monkey D Luffy requires sewing a basic vest and maybe pants but you can get away with modifying jeans, so you only have to focus on getting one piece right; another example is something like Kiki's Delivery Service, where the necessary sewing is a bow and a very simple dress. If you really want to struggle with sewing a jacket as your first project, at least pick one of the simpler, one-color school uniform types.

Difficult, but it all can be done. Understandably you want to make something you're motivated to make, so if you have your heart set on it, have at it.
Keep in mind you will have to do A LOT of trial and error to get things right especially for your first time. My first costume was a stormcloak guard, took me several months to complete it and there are still things I could have done differently now that I know better.
My best advice would be to start looking up how to make clothes from scratch; pants, shirts, etc. The way I learned was to take clothes that fit me nicely and designed patterns based on those dimensions. Loads of tutorials out there, you just have to approach it all piece by piece. Trial and error ad nauseam until you get something that looks halfway decent. It will probably look like shit, but if this is really what you want to do, take it as a learning experience. I'm fully of the opinion of diving into the deep end first, it's the best way to learn.

Lacefronts are really good for blending in the front of the hairline (ie. a swept back style will look WAY cleaner), but in this case the goggles should cover up the hairline pretty solidly so you could probably swing a cheaper wig. Just my 2 cents

If you do this, you need to be certain about the fiber content. Dyes for synthetic fibers and for natural fibers are not interchangeable. I strongly, strongly, recommend you get a sweater made entirely of one type of fiber such as 100% acrylic or 100% cotton. If you purchase a blend, even if it's a blend of two naturals or two synthetics, the fibers won't absorb the dye evenly and you'll get a patchy result. If it's a blend of synthetic and natural, it'll just be worse. Personally I'd get a cotton sweater. I own a few and they are much much much more comfortable and cool than acrylic. But I also know this is a costume and you'll probably only wear it a few times and acrylic is cheaper and easier to find

It's normal to have a handler, but typically your friends are the ones who do it for you. Well the tutorials don't really allow for Toku designs. I have an 80 dollar helmet that I don't wanna ruin. I just don't know how to paint it.

I've heard clay and you can mold around the helmet but I don't know what clay to use.

So I've never before done cosplay, but I want to paint a 3D printed prop. I've never done painting like this before (not miniatures, not cosplay, not in any other capacity).

Pic related is the prop (the skull).

The idea was sanding the 3d print to be smoother (and for color to stick), then priming it with spray paint and then painting it by hand with a brush.

Punished Props Academy on youtube has a bunch of tutorials for painting/weathering props.
As for the clear spray paint, you might be thinking of a sealant like Mr. Super Clear. It would protect your color layer in case you wanted to wipe off the weathering and try again. It's mostly used for things with complicated color patterns, where you wouldn't want to risk messing up the color layer. For a simple bone skull it's probably unnecessary.

Try making one out of foam. That should allow you comfort and to easily add the necessary details you need. Punished Props has a video on his Mandalorian helemet which uses techniques that will be very helpful to your process. Use your helmet to make a pattern by covering it in saran wrap, then scotch tape and marking seam lines. Carefully cut away and transfer to paper, true up the lines, and then wham bam you have a pattern for your foam.

I fucked up my wig's bangs by chopping it with a dull scissors straight across years ago.
It's supposed to be V / M shaped.
Is there any way to salvage this wig? Should I try to salvage the bangs by cutting it more or using the hairs on the top of the head to cover it and cutting those?

I think your only real option is to remove the wefts that make up the bangs and replace them with new, longer, wefts. You can probably safely harvest a weft or part of a weft from the back of wig. Your other option of course is to try and find a color match but that would likely require you to purchase a new wig (I haven't seen a lot of synthetic hair being sold in weft form, especially in unnatural colors, outside of places aimed at cosplayers like Arda and Epic) which defeats your original purpose

I haven't been able to get non-streaky results with midge podge personally, but if you prefer something you can paint on you should check out flexbond or flexipaint. As for spray distance I say about 8 inches works for me, but I've heard 6 inches as well, you should just do a couple different tests. I also usually do 3 layers. What is the weather like for you? That could also negatively impact the smoothness of your plastidip. After you're done spraying wipe the nozzle with a wet paper towel to make sure plastidip doesn't partially seal the nozzle

I'm looking to make some flapping dragon wings to cosplay pic related, and I have a couple of ideas. My first idea is a puppet cable (like the ones they use in those shoulder puppets) with the wings attached to it. My other idea is to take the mouth mechanism out of one of those singing trout things, and attach one wing to each end of the mouth, so it flaps automatically and I don't have to manually work it.

Depends. Typically more complicated costumes (armor, unique designs, anime-logic clothing, or more pieces) will cost more to make or buy. Sometimes buying a costume is cheaper, sometimes making it is cheaper. My first costume (outfit, shoes, lashes, wig, and prop) totaled $80 and my second, which I made myself, was like $40-60 but was a bitch and a half to make because I had no clue what I was doing and had none of the necessary tools yet.

A good way to figure out where your desired cosplay falls in that range is to do a costume breakdown (breakdown).

The best tip imo is to leave the outer external visible layer of hair in each section alone. The problem I see that too many newbies rat nest their entire wig and then comb through it which gives off that deep fried effect. It can work for seriously cartoony styles, but when you want to look polished I find it's best to leave a layer of hair unteased to smooth over the rat nest.

Hard to say without being in the room with you, but it can be a combination of what you're using and how you're using it. When applying hairspray, apply it from a distance in sweeping layers rather than directly to the scalp. Then gently brush through and dry it with a hair dryer. If you're using gel, genuinely use a pea size or smaller and use in small areas if the style permits. Typically even crazy spiked wigs are only gelled at the very tips.

For the helmet, check out Punished Props on Youtube, specifically his Mandalorian helmet tutorial. As for the tunic, that's tough. It looks like finding the right fabric to create those thick pleats while draping will be very important. Doesn't look too bad to me, you will want to get an eyelet pressing tool. I think the neckline is what will give a beginner the most trouble, but just look up a video on how to get sharp triangles/corners with sewing. You'll most likely want to have some interfacing in that area too, which will help keep it's shape and keep the snaps from warping the fabric. Would recommend using stretch fabric, I don't think it's hard to work with, especially if you have a serger. If not just make sure to watch some tutorials on how to work with it and use a proper stretch stitch. My last tip would be take your time with lining up the stripes on the seams, if you can line em up it will look really good. All in all I think this is a very doable beginner cosplay, as long as you're willing to put-in a little extra work on the neckline

I'm confused by your question. If you are asking if 2 way stretch pleather will stretch in 4 ways then no. That's kind of in its name not to. If you're asking if it can stretch at all in the non-stretch direction on the 2 way then the answer if very little. Even non-stretch has some minor, but it's more like an inch vs. stretch fabric stretching to like 3-4 inches. There is also some stretch on the bias (diagonally) naturally in any fabric. So a two way stretch going up and down could stretch that way, diagonally, but not left to right.

How close to finished do you guys usually make your mockups? For example I have a shirt mock up right now that doesn't have the lining attached but I can tell it's going to fit well (after taking the hem alloance into account). So can I just stop now? Or should I finish the whole thing? I'm fairly new to working with craft materials, but I'm wondering what the best way to go about making a pair of skates look like this (red body with a green outer piece).

My idea was to use some kind of plastic-like material to cover the the skates with red material (rather than paint the skate itself so I can still re-use them after), and then another piece of material for the green to wrap around the top of it.

Any recommendations? I hear things like EVA foam or Wonderflex, but I'd like to make sure the best way to go about doing it, especially since it'll be going around an ankle. Maybe something more pliable like a rubber material?

Make a boot cover using stretchy fabric. There's plenty of tutorials online. You can make the green part a separate piece or sew it straight to the red fabric. If you need it to be padded, you can add batting or eva foam. Add a zipper or velcro in the back so you can get in and out.

So, I sealed with plastidip and started painting it.

For some reason, there's a ton of grain on the prop, as if I'm painting over sand or something like that. Does anyone know what the cause could be? I'm using acrylics and am painting with a brush. There's some streaks which is because I'm a noob at props, but the grain thing is confusing. I've been adding coats hoping it'll help but it's not really covering it up. I might just resort to sanding parts down, knowing the root cause would be really helpful though

In my experience with PlastiDip it can give smooth results, but it's hard to use. Use it too close, too cold or the nozzle clogged and it will leave drops on the surface that will give a grainy look when dry.

Sometimes they steal random pictures and send you another product.

Always wear a wig for cosplay. Natural human hair gets oily, flat, and can't keep a shape like a wig can. Your costume won't come across as well without the white color either, so two birds one stone it. Just buy a white wig and use a sharpie/copic/acrylic dye method.

Any guesses on what this fabric might be? It's a suit skirt, and I think it might be crepe but I'm not sure, since the crepe I've worked with in the past was a lot more light weight than this

Overalls can be pretty simple. It's just a bunch of squares and rectangles. The pants might be a little more challenging for a beginner. I'd suggest picking up a pattern for them desu. As for the hat, I'm not sure. Maybe check out any Cappy tutorials?

Some fabric for a halloween costume I ordered online just got here and it’s nothing like the picture... I was wondering if it would be possible to dye polyester velvet? I tried looking it up and most people say it’s very difficult to dye polyester fabrics but I can’t seem to find a clear cut answer. I wanted to be sure before I send it back. What do you think?

You need to make a clear decision about whether to send it back or not. You won't be able to if the dye doesn't come out to your liking. If you're willing to trying dyeing, use a synthetic dye. It is difficult to dye polyester, but not impossible.

Which is better to get flexbond from, cosplaysupplies or cosplayshop or amazon?

What would be a reasonable approach to putting together a good looking costume of this character?

How I see it -

Difficult details:
Mask - Requires a custom mold obviously, no gas mask looks like this. Additionally, an iconic detail is that the eyes should be glowing blue. I would want a soft blue glow, not a super bright one. It doesn't seem difficult to install a controllable brightness cyan/blue LED within the helmet.

Chest - The uniform/coat of this character may require some moderate to heavy work, installing the silver details as well as getting the general seam details and the bulkiness of the upper chest right. May need to find a surplus police or military uniform in black to modify. Not sure what to do about the upper uniform.

Cheap details - - -
Boots - Jack boots. Easy enough to acquire at a surplus store.

Pants - Olive green with one silver stripe along the side of each leg. OD green pants with some kind of durable high visibility silver paint or tape should be easy enough.

Torso belt/tool belt - There are many "tactical" belts that look like this, shouldn't be difficult to acquire suitable belts/props.

Gloves - Self-explanatory.

Also, I'm not sure how hard this would be to implement and if it can *comfortably*, but another iconic detail is their voice or vocoder as its known. How could I implement a voice changer into the mask that would sound at least somewhat similar to this?

Another iconic thing is the ambient "Overwatch" voices. I'm thinking it would be easy enough to conceal a speaker in the form of a radio on the chest or around the back of the helmet powered by a small computer like a Raspberry Pi that would randomly play .wav files of the Overwatch voice as seen here:

That's a route you can definitely take, but not the only one. You could create a base mask with EVA and then use foam clay to add the smooth swoops. Or make it out of paper mache and airdry clay. And then of course there's your suggestion which would still require a clay positive and watertight box for a silicone mold. Not sure what would be the best casting agent would be though. I'd recommend checking out KamuiCosplay's tutorials on masks. She uses tons of different techniques for fleshing out masks and props that could be beneficial for you to watch. In specific, check out her Demonic Briggitte hammer. She uses a material I don't remember the name of which diffuses light. You might have to choose between the light up effect and the ability to see though.

Mandolroian tutorials. His underarmor bodysuit has a lot of similar odd bulkiness and design features. One creator I saw layered pieces of foam and batting underneath fabric. Also yes, starting off with a premade base will be helpful to your cause.

You could use fabric medium mixed with reflective paint, but honestly I'd recommend just sewing on slips of reflective fabric. Paint is prone to creasing, especially in high crease areas like pants. Tape isn't a bad idea, but it's not a pretty one either. Just my humble onion.

Check out PunishedProp's on Youtube. He has one project where he upgrades a PipBoy kit and one fo the methods he uses is installing a veeeery tiny bluetooth speaker that connects to his phone to play audio. You might find something helpful for your vocoder thing as well, who knows.

It's unlikely that you're going to find his exact sweater. I know that because the design is simple you'd think that it'd be widely available, but unfortunately that's rarely the case. I'd suggest finding a solid orange and then adding the white stripes to it. If you have no or limited sewing experience, just some wonder under should do. Try "pullover polo sweater"

If you find a sweater with a collar, to get it to stay popped up you could try spraying it with startch. If that doesn't work though you'll have to do some modifying and add some interfacing

The directions for a 3D printed prop kit I ordered asks for fiberglass rods to reinforce the connecting areas but could I use PVC pipes instead without an issue? The pieces would be around 2-3 inches long so I don't think it would have a problem with bending like longer pieces of PVC piping does.

Making a top with nonstretch fabric and long sleeves. I want the sleeves to fit as well/tightly as possible but still have range of motion. Would it better to cut the sleeves on the bias? Do I need to alter my sleeve pattern if I do that? (Make it smaller maybe?) Thanks!

You don't need to alter your sleeve pattern at all, you would just position it at a 45 degree angle on your fabric. I'm not super familiar with fabric grain, but I don't think you would need to cut it on the bias for more range of motion. I think you would just want to make sure that the design of your sleeve and the armseye have enough room for you. Cutting it on the bias is best for really curved areas like necklines and such. I wonder if you might create an unnatural curvature at the armseye if you cut it on the bias. I'd suggest doing some more research tho
