Hello this is my very first co-ord and post I basically made and diy'd everything i altered the dress to fit me and made the blouse petticoat sock toppers and shoes (hair and makeup in the comments)

I'm always a fan of colorful steampunk that is not just brown and I'm currently doing a steampunk rainbow series on my insta (rufflesandsteam).

On saturday I wore my Lotta JSK for the first time and took some pictures in the forest next to our house. I think it’s really hard to coordinate this dress. It’s the burgundy colorway, but the dress is rather brown with a tinge of red. I really don’t now what colors would match except for wine

Tbh as a non Japanese person who wore jfashion in harajuku it was nuts the entitlement I saw of white people taking photos of me randomly getting hella close and not acknowledging my existence and treating me like part of the architecture when I was clearly a tourist too (I'm black and American) so there was no excuse to think of it as not bothering the locals by asking or thinking I couldn't speak English.

They're equally awful to Japanese people wearing jfashion and maiko and geisha in Kyoto; in the touristy areas like Gion I saw a maiko/geisha have to run from her taxi into the restaurant or whatever building she was going to with a dude in a suit shuffling around behind her trying to shield her from some tourist lady getting all in her face not even asking for photos but just snapping shots with their phone of her. And hearing them speak they were European so it's not even just the trope of loud rude Americans.

I can see why people try to plan sheet snaps with their alt fashion friends or have "accidental on purpose" meetup as opposed to subjecting people to more unwanted/unwilling photos taken by strangers, especially other Japanese people who understand how annoying being asked (or worse, not being asked and being treated like a zoo animal) is already.

Ive done street snaps in Harajuku before and sure I'd like to see more. Everyone else here is being a negative Nancy but here is what I did and my tips for you.

It's pretty embarrassing work, you have to flag people down to ask them to take their photo which stressed me out. Do be aware that photography laws in Japan are different from most countries and you cannot legally single out one person in a photo without their permission, even in public. So you really must ask each person.

How do you get them to say yes? Know Japanese and speak it well. Wear jfashion yourself so you look like an insider, and try to be as cute and well groomed as possible. Choose a place with good foot traffic but not in a spot where people are rushing to get somewhere like near an intersection or train station because they won't have time to stop. People will always ask what you are using the photos for, so prepare a business card and website you can provide them.

I made my opening line "excuse me, your style is really cool, may I have a photo?" Most people will ignore you or wave you by. Some will be interested. Try not to take a lot of their time. Legally I think you are supposed to get them to sign a waiver to their rights to the photo but I didn't do that.
