People misuse the term "otome" a lot for casual lolita nowadays (a lot of people seem to consider anything not-OTT as "casual", while not considering actual "casual" as lolita anymore), but originally it refered to proto-lolita fashion and isn't really a thing in Japan anymore.

i think that's just for hourglass girls because it doesn't show your waist so people might assume you're built like a potato. if you actually are built like a potato, you may as well go for it and people might assume the opposite.

You just need to look closely at the dresses, I can tell this is a replica without having to compare it to the real thing by
>The length of the cuffs and the way the fabric of the sleeves drape around them
>Crooked uneven placement of the star buttons on the bow
>Shit quality lace on the trim of the dress
>Wrong fabric used on the dress, looks cheap and drapes/crumples weirdly
>The white collar has been sewed awfully
>Overall looks cheap

Despite what people say about modern AP, remember that brand is always high quality, if something seems off or cheap about the dress it is a likely a replica

First coordinate as in, you’ll have to buy everything including a petticoat? I’m gonna be honest, if your budget also has to cover shipping, that’s not gonna be easy.
Look for sales in your country on Lacemarket or a lolita sales Facebook group if there is one for your area.
If you’re going for Classic/Gothic, consider if you own already any shoes/bags/accessories/jewelry that might work. Look at good example coordinates. Everything else I would definitely get from a lolita brand (as in, a brand that makes specifically lolita clothes)

the Lolita community is filled with the cattiest most two faced bitches I've ever met, does any one know why?

I've noticed other Jfashion communities seem to attract certain people, Decora for example attracts genderspecials but that's because of its bright childish colors, which no matter the fashion, if it has bright childish colors it attracts a lot of genderspecials. but Lolita, why is lolita filled with the cuntiest cunts out there?

This. Also I know it's hypocritical of me to say since I'm obviously here too, but bitching about people in the fashion has always been a major part of Lolita with getoffegl (formerly) and /cgl/, and having these forums definitely affects how people interact with each other even outside of them. Newbies come in thinking that they need to be a total cunt to be accepted and feel justified in shitting on everyone they see because it's the culture.

I'm not really involved in other j-fashions so I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem to me that fashions like say decora have really latched onto the salt forums in the same way that we have.

No. Honestly sweet lolita is in a slump. Just because resale is weird doesnt mean there is anything new happening, it just means people like the old stuff. People always been looking for sweet stuff, there is some people being nostalgic for 2012 era but that is just copying it not innovating it. If high resale was enough, gothic is always golden then.

There isnt anything new coming from sweet and people arent experimenting enough to create good trends. Lack of big events slows things down, but there just isnt a lot of new ideas lately from that side, both in how people wear it and what is being made.

I think there's a surge of demand, but the major Japanese brands probably won't really participate in terms of new releases.

I can really only speak in regards to AP, but Toy Doll Box was the last "true" OTT 2010-esque sweet dress. There was the MTO of Toy Fantasy, but even that was store limited. I find the whole thing frustrating, because people embedded in the fashion/secondhand markets can tell there's been a shift, but the brands kind of turn a blind eye.

I would love for there to be a real revival, with either entirely new prints, or lots of re-releases. I'm a diehard sweet, and lately it has been increasingly hard to get any pieces. I have the money, just sitting and waiting, but pieces are snatched up within minutes. If the current trend continues, I feel like I'll just be alienated from the style I love.

So, to summarize... I don't think 2020 is the new golden era. I think AP is going to keep pushing it's weird "modern/mature" styles while sprinkling in bunny ears here and there. while prices continue to rise.

Candy’s IG post of the jewelry to match Ice Cream Parlor has given me hope. We know they don’t really care what western lolitas wear (with the exception of the HC MTO cash-in), but Japanese lolitas are starting to wear OTT sweet again too. Lolita brands have a really strange relationship with their older customers. I know brands naturally evolve, but usually if they change too much and they still have clients that are not only willing to buy their older products, but buy only them exclusively, some other brand replaces them. But somehow after years of people still wearing and buying oldschool for example, not a meme, Japanese also had oldschool only tea parties, only Baby has tried to cash in on that. Even if a style is popular brands won’t make things they used to make, and for whatever reason no one comes to replace them. There’s no popular brands that do exclusively oldschool sweet. Major brands need competition from Japan, right now AP won’t give a shit about people wanting their older style if they can put out anything else and still get their money. I don’t consider Baby and Meta their direct competition because they have their own customer base and their style is different enough to consider that people disappointed with one won’t automatically switch to another.

True and I think part of the problem is that the west wants brands to go back to doing what they did 10 years ago, rather than wanting innovation and new directions. The west gets really angry about anything new or experimental, but Chinese/Japanese lolitas love it.

Don't buy prints -- This is the biggest difference. Taobao and indies use a surface print method. It doesn't hold up well over time and the smallest snag will reveal white fabric underneath. Most of the burandos (Baby/AatP, AP, Meta, VM, MM, IW, not sure who I missed, comment if you want to ask about a major brand) all use screen print, where the ink penetrates deeper into the fabric, so it's less likely to show damage.

Krad Lanrete's international pricing makes them not worthwhile -- it's almost burando price but when you look closer the quality is still just above most taobao and still below more burando, you might as well shell out a bit more for the burando label at that pricing.

If you aren't picky most taobao blouses and petticoats are usually ok to get.

tl;dr: All should be pretty okay if you're not too picky.
The only warning is slow shipping for Surface Spell *Gothic*

More details:

I bought Akane and Alois back when taobao was newish, the sewing and the construction is pretty solid. So I daresay they should still be decent. Only thing is that my dress fabric is very thin, if you look closely on their stock photos some of their fabric still seems rather thin.

There's two Surface Spells. Surface Spell Gothic (shop35467425) is the one with complaints about very late shipping (the dress I bought took 3 months instead of 45 days, someone else said it took them half a year to receive anything). That's around the time of the stained glass print. I don't know if they've improved since.

With both Surface Spells I'd say don't go too far back. Some of their early stuff can be pretty dodgy. The sewing is pretty solid and the dress won't fall apart, but sometimes the finishing isn't that great and parts of the dress are uncomfortable, or the pattern is cut a little funny and the dress looks weird on a lot of girls. One of the batches of velvet roses is paper, too, don't get them wet. The newer stuff should be okay.

They kind of don't really compare with the kind of blouses Innocent World puts out (at least, up until 2018 IW was still making very good blouses with interesting fabric and trim). And Surface Spell doesn't put as much teeny tiny detailing into their jsk as Pink House does. Still, if you're looking for something cheap and wearable all of them should be fine.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Yes, I do remember seeing some pretty off-looking Surface Spell pieces a few years ago which is part of what made me hesitant (like you mentioned, the cuts seem to look super weird worn a lot of the time), but I really like some of their current designs so it's good to hear that they have improved. Shame about the slow shipping on Surface Spell Gothic, though.

I don't think I'll ever bother with Taobao for blouses, to be honest. I'm totally addicted to IW blouses (although I haven't bought any new in maybe 2-3 years and am kind of afraid of doing so with what everyone says about their recent output) and I've just never seen a Taobao blouse that made me think "I need this". But I'm a sucker for clean, simple dresses and certain Taobao brands seem to be really delivering on that front design-wise nowadays.

Anyway, I really appreciate everyone's advice, it's been super helpful! I think I will end up making a small Taobao order next month.

I think it becomes a shopping addiction when someone starts buying things just to get a high. It's not about the item anymore - it's about the "joy" of spending the money. I'd only be alarmed if anon bought 10 dresses they didn't even like, and continued to do so just for the "thrill."

The other thing is how people treat their purchases. If you're entering addiction/hoarding territory, the purchases just start to pile up and could even remain in boxes, unopened, in a corner somewhere. If you're actually using your purchases, I don't think it's a shopping addiction.

I wasn't sure from your first post. Some people on this board are really quick to shout "Shopping Addiction!!" which I kind of disagree with, so I didn't want the original anon to misdiagnose themselves.

I think the fashion is more likely to draw in people were are susceptible to shopping addictions/hoarding, but I don't think a shopping spree is something to worry about, unless you become homeless as a direct outcome.

>the purchases just start to pile up and could even remain in boxes, unopened, in a corner somewhere.
I'm not any of the previous anons, but for me, it's not about the joy of spending money but the excitement period of waiting for the package to come. It gives me something to look forward to in my otherwise boring and eventless life. When the package comes, I excitedly open it and love it... for like 5 minutes. Then I throw the dress on top of a pile of other dresses just sitting in the corner of my room. I wear lolita like once a year, I know I'm the worst. I need help.

Waiting for packages is painful for me. I always freak out at the first sign of a package getting lost or delayed. I have so much anxiety about it that it just ruins my day. I'm so relieved when it finally reaches me. I wish I could skip that waiting process.

Taobao brands are not a monolith and vary greatly between brands. Many brands do pre-orders for their dresses, which limits the amount being made and that makes it different from fast fashion in that way. A $30 dress is going to be the same quality as something from Forever21, but dresses that are $100+ are generally much better quality than that. While most dresses are made with poly, some are full cotton (usually solids). You really just need to learn which are the good quality brands and which ones are shit.

Honestly that is the biggest problem in lolita. Everything is far too high waisted and relies on sideways shirring... Even when brands do larger sizing they do it width wise and not account for boobs taking up lenght. It's very hard to find good fitting dresses like that but "low waist" or "drop waist" might be good terms. Unfortunately however drop waist dresses start to have the equally annoying issue of the skirt portion being too short so you get an awkward fit anyway.
