VF and its parent company Condé Nast suck. Loads of racism and sexual misconduct accusations and you can see the results of that toxic culture on every page. I’ve come to believe that the reason Lolita is still held up as a paragon of American literature is because practically everything in America, including who says what we should read, is controlled by Weinstein/Epstein-style abusers, pedophiles and other shitty people.

The way people interpreted the book changed over the years. There is an academic article by Perry Hinton, which talks about how the interpretation of the book changed in the US and how it is different from how it is interpreted in Japan, and then how this links back to Lolita Fashion. People who say that must not have read Nabokov’s other novels, like ada or ardor, which are even more blatantly sexualizing of kids. The narrator of Ada is based on Nabokov (in a very fantastical, dreamlike way) and he gleefully has sex with hundreds upon hundreds of children, including one 12 year old boy who is so overused that he constantly hemorrhoids blood and shit and has to be “given away or destroyed,” and nonchalantly describes the rape of many more. The book “parodies” porn and all these encounters are therefore written in a blatantly pornographic way — as they are in Lolita, desu.
I’ve never heard that he was a csa victim and I’ve read a lot about him. Maybe you’re thinking of osamu dazai.

>> No.10416692

I've never read that but I did read Lolita and it blatantly makes Humbert look like the bad guy. Like to the point that I genuinely couldn't figure out how people could have ever mistaken him as a good person. It literally talks about her crying every night, being miserable, and doing everything she can to escape. It was kinda pornographic but nothing as explicit as what you're describing and certainly didn't come across as a parody.

Yeah, Nabokov wasn't famous yet when he published Nabokov, and so he needed to frame the child porn in something with depth that could pass as a critique of pedophilia. His later works are just blatant masturbatory fantasies, like picaresques of child rape, and no one stopped him because he was famous as heck and anything with his name on it would make bank for publishers. His last unfinished novel, Laura, was burned by his son because he feared a repeat of the controversy around Lolita -- i.e. it must have been even grosser than the last ones

>When Nabokov died in 1977, he left behind a stack of index cards filled with the text of what was to become his final novel, The Original of Laura. On his deathbed, he instructed his wife, Véra, to burn the unfinished work. She instead placed it in a Swiss bank vault, where it remained the object of much speculation for three decades. With Véra’s death in 1991, responsibility for the final work fell to the Nabokovs’ son, Dmitri. In 2008 he announced his decision to allow its publication. The Original of Laura, which the younger Nabokov referred to as “the most concentrated distillation” of his father’s creativity, was released in 2009.

This kind of thinking is what leads to SO much unnecessary book censorship. Depicting a difficult topic in your book does not automatically equate to glorifying it.

carrol was a legitimate pedo who never showed interest in adult women and whose hobby was photographing and drawing naked little girls, whom he lost interest in interacting with as soon as they hit puberty.

nabakov had an age appropriate wife for all of his adult life and there's even a book of love letters that he wrote to her throughout their decades of marriage. there is zero evidence of him being a pedo.

theres saloon girls
old frontier towns across the west in states like South Dakota, Wyoming, Arizona, New mexico where they do corny live roleplays of old western story events, people working the tourist bars just wear costumes, but the regular actors usually go less costumey and use real or analagous materials, old late 1800s patterns, 100% wool, denim without rivets and low dye saturation with natural dyes and brands that date back to that time like pendleton

well anon, I'm glad to have come back to this thread to see that I was dead wrong. There's tons of posts now for all kinds of American things.

I've seen these types of threads on /ck/ before- like what are some American foods and most people just say burgers and everyone has a big laugh. But I can see how the fashion side has way more options than I thought of.
Maybe American culture is more in how we dress and look.

Japan has an idealiized view of 1950s america. The milkshake series wasn't popular in America but it sold like hotcakes in Japan.

The love for american iconography in jfashion happens outside of lolita too, like Amekaji in gyaru and the brand Ammy and the Batty Girls

Well, in my case during elementary school outside the U.S., there were two cheerleading teams, one male and one female for the whole school, where the former was only used for doing a local parade of some sort around the school's area of service and we also marched or so, while the latter was most often used for said local parade plus the local championships between sports teams that only happened only once per year.

Of course, we're talking about elementary school (yet these standards were roughly the same with other schools, but didn't included a male cheer/parade team) so everything was pretty much "wholesome" and "SFW" given how there wasn't any, uh, "pantyshots" and every girl wore bike shorts with black panties on (though some girls had the audacity to use white panties sometimes), unlike the local college cheer teams where it is obviously expected to wear stuff like the things seen in America.

It's pretty hilarious how different cheerleading teams are used around the world, though.

Of course all you saw Girl Scouts do was sell cookies if you weren’t part of a troop — that’s their biggest interaction with the public. Girl Scouts was the most cherished part of my childhood — we did all the camping and survival stuff, but the badges were geared towards career preparedness (I.e. actual real world survival) and would have you go out and interview women in fields you were interested in and stuff. Also I was teased a lot by boys so I really valued having a female space as a kid. People can do what they want, but especially after so many pedophilia charges in the Boy Scouts I don’t understand why there are girls who would choose them over GS.

Since it seems that y'all are forgetting the fact that trannies are starting to get into women's sports, so the last place that biological women could be prestigious winners is intellectual stuff IMO.

I don't know if it's boy scouts or not but in my area there is a group that goes around selling fucking jerky.
It's so hilarious that they're gendering foods. Like just have the boys sell cookies. Everyone clearly wants to buy the fucking cookies.

Not a bad idea. Leave the brains to the women and brawn to the men.

Not that anon, but the girl scouts experience varies WIDELY between troops. I moved between a few, some were camp oriented, some were career oriented, some were ran by this old bitch who taught us the same stitch for 3 years and cussed us out in an Ace Hardware parking lot while selling cookies because it was 100 degrees and the store's power went out. Just varies from place to place.

Are you really stupid enough to think some Girl Scouts marketing intern is reading up on all the talking points only to spread them on random 4chan boards...
Can see your troop wasn’t education-oriented, anyway.

Lolita scouts when? Earn badges similar to the ones in this movie.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers this movie. Please tell me I'm not that old.

No matter what kind of intellectual achievements women make, men will always say we're dumb anyway because of our girly emotions or whatever the fuck. The person with the highest IQ of all time is bio women, but does anyone care? Nope, scrotes still think they're naturally smarter

I always buy from boyscouts because their troops actually get the money. I said no once, but the boy was so polite and cute that I called him back to the door and ended up buying. Girlscouts barely get any of the money from the cookies they sell, and generally they’re not as polite in my experience.

desu girl scout cookie parents scare me. they always glare when I say I don't want the cookies and it makes me so uncomfortable like some local suburban mafia of kids and helicopter moms are trying to pressure me into buying their shit.

the thing is that the cookies end up selling a fuckton more because they're affordable and a good deal, so the girl scouts still make more money in the end even if they get a smaller cut per sale

Ive moved on to store bought
theyve been making the boxes smaller and smaller now theyre making the cookies themselves smaller
also apparently they used to sell the same thing as starcrunch cookies back in the 1980s

the only thing girl scouts prepares girls for is the overly pushy sales industry.
