Con budgeting thread.

How much do you usually set aside for cons (back when cons were a thing)?
Especially for stuff like
>con swag
>food (especially for those who have a hotel without cooking utilities)
>”in case shit happens“ money
>hotel
>plane ride/gas
>etc

>> No.10416546

What the fuck is the point of a thread like this when there's 0 cons on the horizon

aight lemme guess
>always flights cuz some isolated island eurofag in the middle of the ocean and no ferries
max 300€ or fuck it im not going
>transportation around the area of con
40€ (depends on what area)
>hostel
max 150€ / 15€ per day
>con tickets
avg 15€ per day

>food
I sacrifice food for everything (unless it's con special trash food), have nearly fainted on a trip because of it, so idk maybe 60€ max
>con swag
most I've spent in a con is 70€ but I've also spent 0 desu famalam
>extra money (in case shit happens, in case I want to buy myself something nice)
40€

on one hand I'm a tiny bit glad cons were cancelled because i was in no way financially ready for them. Not that I ever am, but I really wasn't more than I usually am.
poorfag broke life sucks, gulls

I guess we can think about how much money we're NOT spending on cons that are NOT happening right now

What euro island do you live on? Wishing I was on one lately.

>> No.10416628

I would usually budget for
>flight (if necessary)
>transportation to con venue (if necessary)
>full cost of the hotel (if I was the one booking)
>parking (usually divided among me+friends)
>$20/meal x 3 meals per day
>registration
>merch

I don't spend a lot on merch at cons but I usually try to pick up at least one or two things if I find something I'm particularly interested in or have been looking for, but I haven't spent more than $100 on con swag in a long time.
Prices tend to vary especially if it's a local con or an out of city/state one ( I live about 20mins from the three major cons in my area so I never get a hotel for them), so I can't really say how much I set aside. I like to overestimate on food because sometimes I'll pay for friends or we'll decide to go out to eat instead of snacking on what we brought. I have a credit card I don't use that's set aside for disasters, but (knock on wood) I haven't needed to use it.

>> No.10416827

Eurofag from a small country here, my country is small enough to roadtrip through or use public transportation.

>con tickets
Around 30€ per con

>con swag
None, prices in the dealers hall are not worth it, you can order the stuff you want from Japan for cheaper. There's no con-exclusives either because it's small Nordic country. If there's good stuff in the artist alley I'll probably throw 20-30€ there.

>food (especially for those who have a hotel without cooking utilities)
We always order restaurant food to the convention center from a delivery app, so probably around 20€ a day per person (so probably 60€ for the whole con)

>”in case shit happens“ money
Just my regular account balance, never needed anything like that.

>hotel
We usually share an entire airbnb apartment with 3-6 people, so 30-70€ for the whole weekend

>plane ride/gas
No planes needed, gas is usually 30-40€ per person if we roadtrip with with 2-4 friends. About 60-80€ per person if we use the trains.

I'd guess I spend around 300-350€ per con. Never been to any overseas cons but maybe eventially. Me and my friends are all adults with full-time jobs so we don't really need to budget. The habit of sharing an airbnb is from our university times when none of us had money, it's a nice tradition now.

i use my savings account as my con money. i have it so that a small percentage of my paycheck goes into that account.

so i usually have a couple hundreds on dollars in that account. of course i try not to spend it all.
ill probably have maybe like $800 per con

>> No.10416901

>>10416536
$400 in total.

I bring a cooler and buy some easy to microwave/make food and plenty of water bottles at home because stuff is cheaper by my house.

Then hotels are usually $100-150 depending how many people I'm sharing it with.

Then $40 for gas, especially for the outta state cons.

$100 for ANYTHING at the convention. That includes dealer/artist alley, going out to eat, and bar drinking.

And an extra $100 for emergencies

I probably spend between £300 and £1000 on merch
>food (especially for those who have a hotel without cooking utilities)
Never really crossed my mind how much I pay for food. I guess £200
>”in case shit happens“ money
Lol
>hotel
£600-£800 usually get a luxury room
>plane ride/gas
£3,000-£5,000 (first class boiiis) and whatever a tank of fuel for the weekend is at the time
>etc
I always get sponsor tier for those sweet benefits

In conclusion: stop being a poorfag

There are a lot of people like this that attend Dragoncon. Why do you think in normal times all of the hotels are sold out? Plenty of Millennials are now starting to earn a decent salary thanks to the abundance of tech jobs out there and how easy it is to make good money in that field.

NAYRT, but eventually you'll get to the point in your life where you finally get a good paying job and you can spend this much on conventions without it making a huge dent in your bank account. Not sure where the hell anon is flying that costs that much, but I'm from the US not Europe so I'm guessing that's why it's different.

>con swag
I budget $1000 for this. That doesn't mean I use it all, but I like having the option there. I also tend to buy things like cels, artbooks, and doll stuff so it's not like this is $1000 on blind boxes and keychains. Dealer room prices are pretty similar to online prices these days, especially when you factor in shipping. I'm willing to spend say $20 more than the item's AmiAmi price + shipping just as a convenience charge.

>food (especially for those who have a hotel without cooking utilities)
I budget $100 a day for food. I have never actually had to use all $100 a day on food, but you always want to over prepare when it comes to things like food. I'd rather have the money put aside and not have used it than to wish I had put aside a little more money so I could actually eat dinner that night.

>”in case shit happens“ money
I don't really budget this in other than food. I guess I would just pull money from my bank account if something happens? I always worry about a Too Kawaii For Comfort situation happening when driving to cons though.

>hotel
Whatever it costs per night. I stay by myself after one too many roommate horror stories. You couldn't pay me to room with anyone else again.

>plane ride/gas
I carpool with friends for local cons, so the cost of driving ends up being negligible. For planes, I keep costs low by flying Southwest but I only go to a couple of out of state cons per year.

>etc
I normally buy a bottle of vodka or something if I'm going to someone's room party, so I guess $30 polite guest fee.

I guess to make things easier I will use Sakuracon for an example.

Pass: 50-80, depending on when I buy it.

Transportation: I got my bus pass since I live right by Seattle

Hotel: I stay with the same group, we check in Thursday and leave Monday, but we have a few people so on average 80-120.

Food: if we have a refrigerator and microwave, I get food the grocery store in Capital Hill. Package(2) of chicken and Four fried rice TV dinners will cost a little over 20 bucks. And that lunch for two days. And dinner for one. Would splurge for dinner at Gameworks and Cheesecake Factory because why not? So that’s 40.

Merchandise: unless a cosplay prop weapon catches my eye I would just get a commission or two. Maybe art of a character I really like so 40?

>live in Southern California, so most cons that I plan to go to are within driving distance
Transportation costs depend on gas prices. If gas is too much, I might consider taking the train, but public transport here is shit. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is a fun train though.
>hoard credits and coupons with the hotel chain I most commonly use
as such, hotel costs are usually a whopping $0
>con swag
i usually set aside $100-$200 for that, but rarely spend more than 10 of those dollars during the entire duration of the con
>food
Usually only eat super cheap foods during conventions. I can make $10-$20 worth of food last through a con. If I’m feeling fancy, I might go to a nearby restaurant once or twice, but I never order anything above $15. So...roughly $50 for food, I guess.
>”in case shit happens” money
If a legit emergency went down, I’d just use my regular savings instead of making a separate budget section for it. I carry $13 in cash on me at all times, though. If I spend any of it, I immediately have to replace it. Just a weird habit of mine.
>overall
Even when I travel normally, I hate spending more than $100 on ANYTHING. The whole concept of me wasting money sometimes makes me physically ill. Such is the nature of growing up poor.
And also Jewish.

Normally I've had a very disposable income since I'm fresh out of highschool, but as of recently I've started saving most of my money, so I doubt I'll ever be able to spend at cons like this ever again.
>con swag
I normally set aside $400-$600. I love collecting figurines, plushes, fanart, etc.
>food (especially for those who have a hotel without cooking utilities)
If I'm going back and forth between home and the con, the most I'll spend money on is the maid cafe, which is about $15/ticket. Otherwise, if I'm staying at a hotel I'll buy a bunch of packaged ramen before the con, about $5 worth, and bring my water heater.
>”in case shit happens“ money
I never plan for this. If I fuck up, I fuck up.
>hotel
Usually we cram our hotel room, most Ive ever had to pay was $40.
>plane ride/gas
My car is SUPER gas efficient, so about $20 would cover the full 3 days. I've never been to a convention outside of my city.
>etc
I always buy my tickets for everything ahead of time if I can, just to make sure I'm not dipping into my actual con funds. 3 day pass is about $60. Parking is $20/night iirc? But it might be less. I can't really remember.

I try to convince myself I go to cons for the panels, idol showcases, etc, but I think my real reason is just to spend money.
