His stupid snarky attitude makes it difficult to read his intentions. I first read it as its the community's fault for not giving enough effort and cash for POCs like the sexual deviant fans. Oveall though he's putting the responsibility on the attendees when he's the one who has the final say. If he really wanted more POC in the limelight, he could try to make at least a few shine. I see he compared it to another con that doesn't get enough love, but I'm assuming that con is smaller and doesn't pull in the same numbers either way. He's complaining that it's just not "easy" to have POC but as a white dude, that's definitely tonedeaf since it's not easy to be a person of color overall. He complains so much, and I get it, cons are a lot of work. But if he had a marketing team and a specific platform for new guests to shine, it'd be easier to pull in people. Some people on social media didn't even know SJ does request threads so that's something they could make an event for and announce. Everybody's talking about what he's said on Twitter, but nobody's mentioned his clarification & apologies on the Facebook group, whether because they're unaware or simply ignoring it for the sake of being mad. He's owned up to his mistake, explaining that ultimately, it's con attendees who decide which guests are invited. He's promised to do a better job of listening to suggestions for POC guests next year, since this year's list is essentially finalized. I'm not justifying what he's said, but at the end of the day, he does have a point, as blunt & harsh as it sounds.
Con heads don't entirely know who attendees will show up for. In general, social media figures REPEATEDLY state that if fans want them at conventions, FANS need to suggest them, because cons are unlikely to invite them on their own. People also seem to fail to understand that guests are booked as far as a year in advance, so next year IS the soonest Dave can live up to that promise.
With AM under shit management & SJ potentially condemned, it would leave Akon as the only sizable Texas convention. And even THEN, Akon's reputation is notoriously sketch.
Dreamcon (the one referenced in Dave's original tweet), while a great concept focused on inclusivity, is only a small convention in a smaller mid-sized city. None of these smaller conventions serve as replacements or be-all-end-all for this issue, as none of them are currently "destination" conventions.
Despite all this, as any regular in the Texas con community (or TX /cgl/ thread lurker) would know, any & almost every convention is run by shady, dickhead management. To look or wait for morally perfect convention management would mean to essentially be leaving the community, because nearly everybody has some poor experience or problematic encounters with some form on con management

Misrepresenting themselves to push appeal to their charity auctions and such. They dont want people to know how much they draw in from ticket sales, filling hotel rooms, city parking etc. Because then the workers will start asking for money instead of just accepting a shoe box with old scratched up funimation dvds and $5 in jimmie johns coupons.

Had a friend who was San Japan staff. They got their stuff stolen and when they reported it to higher ups they said it was her fault. I think a lot of black people with their head on straight aren't trying to directly benefit from their trauma/oppression, etc. They simply want more accountability or effort put toward making the playing field actually even so they CAN be self determinant but because they feel they have little power in the system they want those who do have power (politicians, the wealthy, etc., who are often white or "in" with "white society") to help dismantle policies or practices that habe a disproportionate negative impact on blacks or non whites that are holdovers from past intentionally racist or segregationist policies.

It's hard to feel like you have autonomy when a huge proportion of people assume the problems you are trying to solve don't exist. Everything in America isn't inherently racist the way some critical race theorists may claim, but a lot of institutions like policing and prisons and educations, lending programs, etc. have practices that are handed down from a time when things were actually intentionally racist so blindly following tradition or policies without understanding the previous harmful intent can lead to things never getting better.

Another issue is people politicizing what most Americans would otherwise call a human rights violation that needed to be corrected if it were going on in a socialist or communist country. It's only political in the sense that changing and revising public policy can help resolve most of the issues, but being more open to helping inform those who don't understand also helps convince people you aren't the stereotype they may assume and some people are tired and not making the effort anymore which as a fellow black person I see as the wrong decision. I've heard stories of an old black man who got literal klan members to give up their robes just from being reasonable and kind and proving their prejudices wrong. If he can do that, people my age have little excuse to not cooperate with others on the issue more.
