i think these ones look nice. the OTT pink one is kind of ridiculous but it works, i think the pop of color from the underskirts is cool. i think making sugary carnival actually work as a goth coord in the third one is an interesting idea too. a lot of the other ones just look incredibly unbalanced to me.

I just think it's always obvious that it's not part of the dress, and 9 times out of 10 creates a lampshade silhouette. That said I'm totally not into the OTT classic style or $1000+ brand monstrosities that usually do underskirts, but I think it looks even worse when tacked onto regular coords.

I think it needs to match the coord, which it usually doesn't. Examples:

It depends on how well it blends in with the overall outfit. If you barely notice the underskirt you did it right.
I really dislike a huge block if nothingness at the end of dress, it just looks unbalanced to me.

This on the other hand look aesthetically pleasing and well balanced. Also, like the other anon said: silhouette is the key.

It saddens me to see when the dress has the typical lolita volume but the underskirt underneath is flat, it almost looks like extended bloomers in a weird way.

Wearing underskirts is not that difficult if you keep that in mind but apparently it also seems to be a matter of taste too, as you can see. Some anons like combinations with dresses/skirts I would say don't look right.
