But I don't see any evidence of any of that.

Ive been several years and always had a great time

They are held in one of the largest convention centers in the USA

There have consistently been industry guests every year I've been...I went and saw the official evangelion exhibit and even met the art director for the show

I saw the Japanese production of sailor moon live there, WITH the Japanese actresses and staff

Last year they had TOHO there in an official capacity, and I got to meet many of the Godzilla artists. And they had a nifty exhibition set up

This year it looks like looks like TOHO is coming back, (despite unsubstantiated rumors of them being treated awful) MAPPA is coming in some capacity bit seems, so is good smile racing. And K-books, so it looks like they have industry support at least from the Japan side

Go if you want to have fun, do what you want and don't let others try and convince you otherwise

OP, in the chance that you are serious here's some hopefully non-bias opinions about AM.

They manage to pull some impressive Japanese/foreign guests but they have a very absent local industry participation. With the way things are I would be worried their international guests might not be able to travel and thus they'd have nothing going on if they still happen

EVERYTHING starts late
I'm not talking 10 - 15 minutes (which does still happen ) I'm talking hours. They also sometimes will cut these late events short making what was scheduled to be a long event like 30 minutes. Over the years this has happened with the cosplay show, fashion show and hentai fest

They almost certainly oversell their numbers. While anons will say it's "dead" and that's not true there is no way they are getting the numbers they claim to.

As a tourist downtown Houston is kind of lame. Everything shuts down at 6-7.

And lastly, just because they plan to still happen doesn't mean the city couldn't pull rank and shut them down if they get scared. If you do plan something make sure you can get out of it. Back in March there was a local DFW con that was shut down half way through the event because Dallas put a stay at home in effect with less than 24 hours notice.

Looks like the GRB is trying to move them to August now. Probably not a good sign. They admitted (for what I think was the first time) that doing the event in July would be sans concerts, dances and cosplay contest.

With what’s currently happening, AM is nowhere in their right minds to want the police on their side right now. There has been cases in Houston but then again, since we’re the most diverse city, it doesn’t get in national news, much less in local news.

If they want security, they should consider expanding their security department. Houston anonymous here. I've gone to Matsuri and sometimes they cant handle their own lines to go to a certain event. at this point they should cancel and try to switch to next year.

I went to matsuri the last 3 years in a row. Last year was my last. Regardless of all the claims of how bad attendees are, overall it's VERY poorly organised, they have way too much room and do nothing with it, they lack mediators at panels where the speaker is not as popular. Oni-con in Galveston is organized and way better than Matsuri.

Considering that people replying directly to AM are generally OKAY with attending a large anime con in midst of the current pandemic because "I need this con to get away from the reality" mentality, how many are going to believe in AM and let them keep the money?

God I am rolling waiting for their announcement, if they ever post one. Who knows, they never shared anything that said that IA had cancelled last year (as far as I remember?), people were stuck in a trip to a con for an artist they wanted to see that never showed. I wouldn't be surprised if they were dicks enough to be like "oh well the mayor said we can't have the con but still come to the con center and hang out!"

It coincidentally landed on the refund date for a policy they implemented months ago. Anime Matsuri was forced to cancel not because they "listed to the fans" or whatever PR nonsense, but because of the Houston Mayor ordered by fiat the cancellation of all conventions in the Houston Convention Center until 2021.

The real reason was to get the GOP in Texas to call off theirs and then added numerous regulations designed to can the convention if it breaks them.

Anime Matsuri leadership spun this around using PR language to make themselves feel less sad, while in reality they were forced to by mayoral fiat. If they were more honest and say "we were forced to" and explained that other cons were forced to cancel, people would be better.

This move by the mayor is a contant theme for 2020: You are not allowed to relax and everything is canceled except politics. With anything, waiting another 12 months for any relief from politics is unbrearable and is a disaster to the morale of the city which is in a social and economic collapse, with a mayoral leadership that has no solutions in mind.
