What they mean is that lolita is fairly a maximalist fashion considering how many accessorises and clothing items you need for a complete look versus normie fashion. Also, a lot of people in the fashion worship brands and consume every little tacky novelty item brands release.

The most shocking thing to me is seeing how many morbidly obese women who are a part of the lolita community. It doesn't make me upset like other anons, i just find it curious they would be attracted to a fashion that doesn't cater to their bodies, especially when there's a multitude of western brands that make louder clothes for plus-size women that would suit them better.

After my hiatus, I was also shocked to see how accepting people were of supposedly trans women and littles compared to the livejournal era.I had no idea what a sissy was until i got into lolita.

Have you seen what western plus size clothing looks like?
It's garbage and as a fat girl, I don't want to wear loud colors. What I like about lolita are the details, the soft colors, and the cute things that aren't available to me as a woman in the US who is expected to look like some sexy pin up model cause I'm wide. I hate that look.

Take pic related for example. Shit is hideous! The only people who want to wear this are fucking normies.

I don't have anything against fat folks but even on thinner girls certain waist cuts can make you look bigger. Plus adding on a petticoat you're a walking balloon at this point. I have a hard time sympathizing with them when they point out that they feel even bigger wearing the fashion.

I mean, if someone is worried about looking bigger regardless of how big they are, I don't think this is the fashion for them.

I guess what I'm surprised to find is that there are a HUGE amount of women into this fashion who don't even seem to really enjoy it?
The amount of girls at meets who I've heard say things like "god I can't wait to go home and take all this off" or "I hate wearing these types of shoes, they hurt my feet so much".
And then the ones who like, make no sense at all "I can't imagine wearing this into my 30s lololol" or the girls who do it just for the efame and sell every dress they get so they can trade in for the new trend and then when they don't get enough followers, they just sell everything else they have and go back to wearing boring normie fashions.

It kind of sucks to find so many people who don't love the fashion as much as I do.

I think the idea of fashion sort of revolves around being seen though. If you are going to go out, you can't go out naked. So when you go out, you wear things that you think look nice and enjoy. When you're inside, with no reason to protect your decency, or to protect yourself from the elements, there's no incentive to dress yourself up other than to "look cute". Now that I'm home alone it's the perfect opportunity to pull out all the dresses where I used to worry it's too short, too fancy, will get endless questions from strangers on the way to the tea party, sashes are reserved for OTT events, it doesn't match my Usakumya, etc. And then just wear it around the house.

I’m not afraid to wear my dresses. In the first few weeks, I was wearing Lolita during work, which I couldn’t normally do in the conservative environment of my office. I ended up stopping because it’s hard to sit at a work desk all day in lolita. Normally when I’m in lolita, it’s on the weekends or after work and I’m walking a lot more, not just sitting. It’s a pain the ass to sit at my desk chair with a full skirt.
In the rare event I need to get groceries, sometimes I’ll put on a coord, but people tend to break the 6-foot social distance barrier to talk to me, and I just want to buy my fucking carrots or whatever in peace so I’ll do without.
Even though I do wear lolita out alone all the time, I find it’s more fun to wear it with other lolitas. I really miss that aspect, and the general sadness I feel about not seeing anyone saps my effort to get frilled up. I was really surprised about the general lack of fashion knowledge. Lolita was one of my gateways into a fashion subculture and it really made me interested in how the industry works, fashion trends, etc. but I quickly came to realize that a shocking amount of the community have basically no knowledge of how fashion works besides cookie cutter rules. I thought that an alt fashion group of all people would be very quick to adapt to new trends, styles, etc. though evidently I was (and still am) incorrect. Correct me if I’m wrong but are you new? Or young? I love Lolita too, and when I first started wearing it, I wanted to wear it all the time. I never wanted to take it off at the end of the day. But 15 years later? It’s become more normal to me because I’ve worn it for so long, and I’m not ashamed to admit that yeah, some of it is uncomfortable. There’s extra layers making you hot, socks sliding down, sometimes itchy wig if you wear one, lace rubbing the wrong way. As great as I felt and looked while wearing it, it is a freeing feeling when you take it all off at the end of the day. Kudos for you for wanting to wear it all the time, that’s great. But I don’t enjoy the fashion any less than you do, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it anymore.

Plus I’d get cat hair on my dresses if I lounged on the couch in them. I’m not going to risk damaging my $300 dress just to feel pretty. I also don’t wear high heels around the house but that doesn’t mean I secretly hate high heels. Lolita clothes just aren’t practical and around the house I need stuff to be able to move around and get dirty in. And now that I’m running fewer errands and working fewer days I haven’t really been wearing lolita fashion, despite the fact that pre-pandemic I was a near-daily wearer. For a lot of people, myself included, a major part of fashion is self-expression. When there's no one to show it to and nowhere to go in it, a chunk of the appeal is ruined.

Is it the *only* reason I like it? Of course not. I still like the feel of wearing the dresses and the process of putting together a nice outfit. But at the moment, the pros of feeling nice in it are outweighed by the cons of maintenance and unnecessary wear and tear to the dresses. Most of the Japanese lolitas who started wearing the fashion were women who wore it on special occasions to treat themselves. Daily lolitas have always been the vast minority. I'm not saying I don't believe you but the stories I heard from Japan were about girls sneaking out to cities so they could dress in various alt fashion which included lolita.

I'm not saying that what you're saying isn't true, I just don't know if your story was the majority of them because the stories I heard seemed like it was more of going out and experiencing the freedom to dress however you want, and not necessarily for special occasions only.

I don't think I'm clutching pearls at all. I think I exist in the happy medium you're talking about which is wearing it sometimes but obviously not always. Even daily lolitas don't work out in lolita.

I think it's weird to focus on the sock example because I was more taken aback by the anon who referred to dressing up as quote "a waste of time".

And I'm sorry but in my comm, there seems to be a lot of random girls who find the stuff super uncomfortable to the point where they are just complaining the entire meet up about having to wear the fashion when they could just not wear it and save themselves the uncomfy feels that lolita gives them.

I was being hyperbolic but everyone's skin has body oils and a small amount of sweat just from existing. You still have to wash and maintain your clothes periodically even if you're not running a mile in them.

>I heard seemed like it was more of going out and experiencing the freedom to dress however you want, and not necessarily for special occasions only.
I think we might differ on the interpretation of "special occasions". A small special occasion for me is a weekend brunch with friends, a visit to a museum, or a trip to the park. Basically a treat for yourself which doesn't just happen every day. I don't think they only meant official occasions like birthdays and weddings.

I wear my stuff frequently and wash it frequently. It holds up fine. You sure do have a lot of excuses.

And now special occasion is just whatever you want it to be.

I thought everyone on here was an idiot back then too.

What does it matter to you if someone else doesn't wear lolita as much as you do? I have never once cared about that, and I've been in the fashion for over a decade. This was never an issue. I can't help but think you're all lolitas at heart desperately trying to emulate some kamikaze girls style lolita 24/7 lifestyle.

and everyone seems to forget when it comes to this discussion that not everyone has the wardrobe for daily casual wear. if you have lots of simple cut, sack dresses, cutsews and skirts, or ETC/Leur Getter dresses then yes, you have the wardrobe for casual wear. but if you wear lots of OTT sweet, have mostly OPs and JSKs and more intricate pieces then you probably aren't going to wear those as daily wear.

>> No.10402777

>>10402687
I agree that it's disgusting to never wash your dresses but if you want a secondhand flocked dress you can just wash it yourself right?

What I found surprising is fairly similar, it's how all lolitas seem to think that velveteen will get destroyed if you wash it any other way than dry cleaning. I have a couple velveteen pieces and while I don't wash them as often as my less fragile items, I still wash them around every third or fourth wear. They've held up just fine over the years, the fabric still looks great. The same idea goes for washing/getting out stains: the lolita community often acts like their dresses are so fragile they'll just fall apart when you look at them wrong and as soon as they're stained they're ruined forever.
Meanwhile I've literally gotten huge candlewax stains out of velveteen just fine. It was a pain in the ass, sure, but if you take care to look up how exactly to clean specific kinds of stains on specific kinds of material, you'll find a working solution more often than not.

My most surprising discovery in lolita was that things are cheaper than it's made out to be. When I was a newb in my early teens I barely knew how to use the internet, I used youtube, tumblr, wikipedia, fyeahlolita and never really googled anything. Bought stuff from cosmates and clobba because that's what I knew about. Everyone I followed on tumblr always talked about how expensive brand was, "this [popular moitie print] is 600 dollars secondhand!" and "taobao and bodyline is the only affordable options". Then I realised my local comm exists on fb, and the real online comm exists on lj. Found out about lolibrary, comm sales and later lacemarket and closetchild and I realised that the super expensive burando that will not be obtainable unless I save up for several years was readily available often for prices I could afford with birthday money. Secondhand good condition Moitie, VM, AatP for less than I at the time paid for Krad Lanrete.

Mine aren't crawling with homeless junkies and children play outside in the evening because it's safe. It's not even McMansion tier and I never said it was. It's just middle class families.

Suburbs have office buildings now, it’s not like this is the 1950s. I save hundreds on not commuting, which means I have more to spend on lolita.

I mean there are many different cities in America with different setups. There are always gonna be expensive apartments in any big city, but in a lot of cities outside of a few “cool” people in the direct downtown core most of the rich people move to “safe” suburbs. Cities like Detroit & Milwaukee to make just a couple off the top of my head, those cities have large areas that are really poor and the rich people mostly live in suburbs. Obviously places like Austin, Seattle, New York, SF, it’s expensive to live in the city, but not everywhere is like that

You are retarded. "Suburbs" are not cities on their own. It's literally in the name: "sub-urb". If you are travelling to your smaller city's "urban center" to work, then you are exiting the suburbs. Suburbs are a classification, not just a cutesy name for "smaller town that's kinda near another larger city".

Something that surprised me about lolita is that even in the year 2020, lolita-related threads on cgl are still getting shitted up with gulls screaming about fat people. It's boring and annoying af.

Ntayrt, but there are million dollar homes in the suburbs that aren’t McMansions. I come from a smallish city an hour outside of a major one, and the Victorian homes here regularly go for a mil plus. My dad is an architect and he designed a custom house for our family on a large lot, and I’m pretty sure it would assess at over a million

Are you the anon I replied to before? They mentioned sweat getting on their dresses. That's a reason to wash the dress. If you're too lazy to wear the dress, it's not a leap to assume you'll also be too lazy to wash it.

>If I'm taking photos it's fine
Good to hear you're over it and you're actually wearing the clothing you paid for.

And yes. They are JUST clothes. They're meant to be worn. This is the usual message spread across this board. I'm kind of surprised that it's suddenly the opposite.

Thanks for admitting you were wrong, however. I know that takes A LOT for people on 4chan to do.
