What impact will the coronavirus have on the convention scene in 2021? Will it be lower energy? More intense?

>> No.10377477

i can see it going either way desu, either because people are too scared to still go out and theres less people or theres more people out because theyve been starved for a con for an entire year or so

I don't think we'll see cons until late 2021 or early 2022.

I also think fewer people will be going to them due to the economic hardship about to happen and I think the con goer age will raise a bit because only people with more experience and settled careers will be able to afford them.

Unsure whether people will socially distance post-corona but I do expect things to be a bit different and probably more lame. I do hope older crowds going to anime cons becomes a thing though.

>> No.10377600

Smaller conventions, especially those in their first year or so, will probably not return. But big players that have been around for a while will be fine. Maybe they will limit ticket sales or have more staff to focus on distancing, but that depends on local regulations on social distancing. If we get a vaccine or cure, things will probably go back to pretty much normal. It doesn't take too long for people to forget to be scared of something.
>>10377597
Agree about more older people, but I think we will also see a steady amount of teens and college students who are still living off their parents and can afford to go to cons. Probably fewer 20-somethings due to economic impact.

>> No.10377736

The atmosphere will be vastly different than any other years for any convention even San Diego Comic Con (benchmarker)

Because people will either be too financially unstable, too concerned to be around people, less attendees, less parties, less interaction with individuals.

But the biggest one will be the shrinking of genre specific conventions like Anime for example as many of them will not survive this. Those with big pockets and big sponsors and backers will survive such as Anime Expo but others will fold and cease to exist.

The energy is gonna be lower too especially when certain dealers, artists, craft makers, cosplayers and writers fizzle away, quit or find a new job. Especially to those who rely on conventions to supplement their income.

Organization wise will see more implementation of crowd control and crowd reduction. This virus has put an ugly spotlight on the wild and rampant overcrowding issue into the forefront which has been heavily ignored for years since the money was always flowing but now that same revenue has now become a big liability for big cons and small cons in general. There will be a push to micro manage and control how and where attendees will be able to roam and how to prevent a potential epidemic from occurring.

Those that cannot insure Health Safety amongst their attendees will suffer heavily especially when US States and likely World Government start to implement measures to reduce contagion and spread not just for COVID-19 but for any potential and all future threats.

I think if there's a vaccine by next year that cons will be party hard if anything but yeah if it's still around cons will be not worth going to. If you use cons to socialize in big groups anyway. I fully expect cons to die off and be much more tame going forward much like you said. Smaller cons are definitely going to get memed

I hoping there’s going to be smaller, more genre specific cons rather than these huge “all encompassing” cons.

There's not gonna be a con scene in 2021. Social distancing is estimated to last at least 1.5 years, best case scenario.

The first cons that you'll be able to go to are most likely in Summer 2022.

Some of you are really hysterical. 2022? Seriously? Lmfao. The virus, which I will remind you has a 0.7% death rate, has already past its peak. It'll stop being something to worry about within a month and a half. Cons that are scheduled for the second half of summer and later will proceed as usual this year. covid19 is extremely contagious and many people aren’t bothering to follow safety restrictions and proper distancing, which could lead to this going on way longer than expected. not to mention coming second waves (especially in the US, where some places haven’t peaked for the first time yet). even if you’re correct and this will go away “within a month and a half”, which is bs, unemployment was around 20+ million last time i checked and many people will be in financial ruin for a long time. this will certainly affect frivolous conventions, a lot.

Depending on your area, I expect there to be a bunch of unofficial outdoor conventions with a mask policy. If you live in Michigan or Virgina you can expect to be shot in the face by the cops for sticking your head out the window of your house, but places like Ohio and Nevada are already declaring themselves open for business. Word of mouth will make it grow in places they can get away with it. The mayor of Las Vegas wants to open up the casinos so it wouldn't be a stretch to see conventions popping up in places like that.
The first sunny day in my town people are jogging in the streetes and running around in the nature parks and the cops don't give a fuck. Some people in law enforcement and city council suspect that the corvid-19 deaths are inflated and are just doing the bare minimum to keep everyone happy. Other places like NYC had a "do not resuscitate order" to EMTs for anyone who flatlines to make sure the corona death toll would increase. More fear for more federal money. But they just scrapped that, wonder why.

Expect smaller local cons to cap their attendance at under 300 attendees. Mid-size regional cons at 1,000 and the mega cons at 25,000 people to promote social distancing. It will lower the fun at cons since organizers will limit vendors and artists to spread booths and tables out more on the floor so there can be some distance between attendee and artist or vendor.

>> No.10391087

the con scene will die out because every con whether you're local or AX and SDCC will lose alot of money from low attendance to lack of vendors and artists just to promote social distancing. People will lose interest since cons will resort to lotteries to see who can attend. Japanese guests for anime cons won't want to come here due to the travel restrictions and quarantine. Big companies will just self promote themselves via the internet. E3 and SDCC have been feeling that pressure for the past several years.

Kek. Scientists are still uncertain that getting COVID and recovering makes you immune in the first place. WSJ just had an article out about this yesterday. There's plenty to read about it. Last month I read that it's not possible to get it twice, now it's being reported that it is. Again. No one knows anything and if they do it isn't shit they want to share with the public.

That, and most vaccines take 10-15 years to actually develop. People blither on about how the whole world is working on a cure but coronavirus is not a flu and is something new entirely.

People who line up to get this vaccine whenever it gets released are either brave or stupid. Maybe both.

Obviously life is going to go on. Humanity has survived pandemics before. But our world has never seen globalisation of this scale before. If anyone fucks up anything anywhere we're all going back into quarantine.

Not that they have a choice, we only got a 1 time check of $1200, which many haven't gotten or don't qualify for. And any relief for small business got taken by large corporations not to mention USPS is about to go under.

The biggest problem with this? Is they are reporting literally almost EVERY death as a COVID-19 death. You died of a heart attack but had the COVID-19 virus in you? It's reported as a death by coronavirus even if it wasn't.

Of course, This could just be the conspiracist out there. Theres no 100% legit source to know exactly how the cases are being reported. I know some states are allowing anyone to be tested, even if you don't show symptoms - so that will cause a case spike as well - It's good to know if you have the strain, because then you SHOULD take preparations to isolate and keep from spreading it. Alot of the reason why it's spreading so fast are from people who don't know they have it and aren't showing symptoms. That's the biggest issue.

I definitely see a decrease in attendance, and alot of smaller cons without much to back them folding over all together. IF we are lucky, and that's a big IF, 2021 things should start to resume.... but with the economic impact this has had, We likely won't ever see a 100% recovery in the con scene in the next 3-5 years. That's not a doomer outlook, that's just going off how badly the economy is damaged and how alot of cons will struggle to get foreign guest, as well as artist, dealers and misc guest that had to take on full-time work to make up for the lack of cons and likely can't or won't return to cons.

the virus will all blow over in a few months once a stable method of treating it is found, and will disappear completely within the next year once a vaccine is developed
Most young people are barely affected by the virus, the ones with risk are those with respiratory conditions or other health issues and older people
All of which will be at significantly less risk when proper treatment is developed. Big pop center states are passing their peak and flyover states have not had nearly an influx of patients to be a problem.
The biggest problem with the virus was the rate of infection clogging hospitals, we're passing that phase and getting stable treatment.
That said, if you or a loved one you interact with has a condition or is vulnerable, you're not out of the water yet and should stay home for a while longer.
It's not near as awful as people make it out to be.

COVID-19 weakens your immune system and you die from the complications. There's also the issue of it causing blood clots in others.

They put it down to help separate the deaths from regular deaths in case the CDC needs to reference the body. This is due to the CARES act which also allocates funds for deaths and treatments related to the disease. They aren't just labeling them for fun, they need to meet requirements to qualify for the labeling, and mislabeling can result in fines, as well as the hospital being kicked out of the Medicare system, and no hospital wants to be off of that for inflated numbers.

Going by your logic, might as well say HIV/AIDS never killed anyone then.

It's the world around us that's increasingly unstable. Trump and China are shaping up for war. I honestly don't think it's going to happen, but I think we're going to see the end of "made in China" and supply chain problems. Worldwide instability isn't really good anime con time.

Given that you can still infect people up to 37 days and still test positive is what will worry people.

Right now we are still waiting for one of the biggest cons in Toronto if they will cancel. I know Anime North cancelled like a month before the event and in the staff email shed light on why they held off so late.

They had to hold till all parties could agree to cancel so they won't take any contract cancelation penalites. But still, Anime North took a hit as hotel rooms and other admin stuff was booked so they had to absorb that. They are large enough to take that hit as they have built that war chest for many years.

I think Fan Expo will have to cancel as well but holding off till a month before to sort out the legal side of things.

In the Anime North 2020 thread here some nerd crunched the numbers. Fan EXpo has about 50,000 attendees and if you space them out at least 6ft the line will go 91km.

They should keep the restrictions till then. We are in a pandemic. Peoples lives are at risk. So what if it stays till then? It is not like they are banning or cancelling conventions forever. You can have your conventions in 2021 or if things are still bad then in 2022.

Hopefully by then everyone would have been vaccinated and we can move on forward then.
