Not a chance. Around half of the cons originally scheduled for June have already been postponed or cancelled.
I do think fall cons are a possibility, but that could go either way.
States will be "open" again in the next month or so, but there will be some sort of rules in place regarding large gatherings, which will vary by state.
It's anybody's guess as to what those rules will be and how long they will be in effect.

It's just a matter of time before someone sets up a virtual con, i'm just not sure what format it'll take place in, either something bespoke where the purchase price of the software is the "ticket" or just run it inside... VR chat, Minecraft or something else i might not be familiar with.

Really tempted to go for an Index really, in terms of cost its about the same as what i'd spend on going to cons anyway, and i know plenty of gulls spend way, way more than me.

Yup. All mine cancelled. Even if I wanted to go to one in the US there's no guarantee the border will be open by the time the con rolls around.
Even if the border is open, most people at conventions don't bathe properly. One giant crowded infection chamber.
Most of the people I work with agree this thing is set to linger to at least Sept/Oct at this point. I don't know if I'll be attending any cons this year.

I think in most civilised countries large gatherings like conventions could be stopped for 2, or more years. Small gatherings will probably start being permitted this yeah, but events of that scale are a huge cross infection risk. And don't forget that if a vaccine is 12-18 months away, they have to inoculate millions of people, so ramping up manufacturing scale from that breakthrough to millions will take months, usually flu vaccines are only produced on such a scale to protect the most vulnerable.

Or looking at the evolutionary pressure she’ll degrade into a common cold in a decade or so. Remember the flu we get today comes from the Spanish flu in 1918. It went from a 2.5% death rate to now maybe a 0.001% mortality rate. Corona Chan maybe started at a 2% death rate and is already down to 0.2-0.12% death rate.

My big con is Youmacon and I'm still a bit worried.

The good:
>Con isn't until Halloween weekend - end of October / beginning of November. Lots of time.
>Con is large enough not to be cancelled on a whim, but hopefully scrappy enough to be flexible where needed
>Con staff are active on social media and are, so far, assuring us that the con is still likely going to go on without a hitch

The bad
>One of the two main buildings that house the con is currently being used as an overflow care facility for COVID-19 and will probably continue to be used as such into the early summer
>Its in Detroit, one of the hardest hit cities
>The con organization has always been spotty. Effective where it really counts. But spotty.

AWA is the same weekend as Youmacon. No wonder last year there were so many different vendors from previous years. I imagine they opted for Youmacon since it was one they probably already did and had scheduling issues, or preferred it over AWA.

I am not too optimistic that this will be over before the end of year. Some states are opening back up, but we'll see another huge spike as a result which will put us in another lock down, wash, rinse, repeat.

I bought tickets for AWA 2 weeks ago :/. Hoping they roll over.

I'm not even worried just about con cancellations this year. I'm worried things will go back to normal (in other words, allow big gatherings again) but the turn out and budget will be way worse. I love big cons. I feel like social distancing will be a factor.

But worse, is that the economy and people's funds are going in the shitter. Not only will fewer people show, but they'll spend less too and it'll be less nuts at the bar. I feel it'll take 2-3 years for weeb wallets to recover

There were different vendors from last year because they were the "shit vendors" as you called them yourself, that you wouldn't let in before but had to this time because your vendor hall got gutted when all the dealers found out you had no notable guests. Also we know the grudge you have for AWA since they moved to Halloween and you had an attendance drop. You even whined on Facebook because Japanese guests don't trust you and went to them instead. Seriously bro, read your post. The reply is so out of place and unrelated, you can smell the vendetta from here in Dallas.

That's true. I always forget to factor in that a lot of weebs are HS/College aged and really just don't make decent money at all. Which is understandable at their age.

I didn't start attending cons until I was already a mid-20's white collar professional. I really take for granted the face that money is rarely an issue for me con-wise.

On the other side of the coin, my brother in law is a professional illustrator who makes his living selling commissions at cons and online. Ordinarily he makes a pretty solid living out of it. But with cons getting cancelled left and right and his online consumer base being strapped for cash, he is getting straight up fucked financially.

I absolutely think there won't be cons for 2020. 2021 there will be. But 2020, there are signs that this will play out like the Spanish flu, it goes away until winter, then comes again.

And in Cali it's already pretty hot, but it's not getting any better. Not even mentioning the fact that some events might just be cancelled out of mourning. The thing that makes it worse is honestly opening up too fast instead of waiting for both deaths and infections to slow down. No cons till 2022 would be assbackwards, but there's totally no Cali cons until 2021. Not even schools are opening up until 2021, how are we going to expect cons?

Dragoncon is in a shit situation. If they cancel now, they lose money through multiple breach of contract fines. If they go on, the turnout will be well below average and they still lose money from low attendance numbers.

And then there's the people who dropped over a grand on a non refundable prepaid host hotel room. Nobody is going to eat a $1k loss without a fight.

>> No.10387841

>>10387836

Well they are probably waiting until they are forced to and can use the "act of God" clause to try to come out relatively unscathed.

As for the people with the prepaid rooms, if the con gets cancelled - they might get lucky and the hotel will issue some sort of a refund. If not, I am sure many many many many people will call and raise hell and file disputes, understandably.

AWA isn't out of the woods either, even though they are in the end of October - at the rate things are going, we might not see a down curve to this until fall — that's IF we're lucky. But given how the governor is Willy nilly about opening shit up, we are likely to have another bad spike and lockdown ordered.

because in our modern first and even 2nd world, production never stops. If it does, major chunks of society wilt because the consumer is now very far from the producer. Meaning: people will run out of crap to do, and resources to consume and have to get new crap and new resources.

This is especially true for most people because most people have credit card debt and rent, not savings and backup plans, so they fear not being able to work.

this is the problem i see most people having. They think the goal of the lockdown was to prevent infections. But it wasn't the primary goal. The primary goal was to slow it down enough to make sure the medical system wouldn't be overwhelmed like it was in some european countries.

But many people I talk to are conflating that with trying to total stop infections from spreading, which is ridiculous. Its way too transmissable, has too long an incubation period, doesnt make everyone sick who gets it, and we don't have conclusive proof that you only get it once. We were never going to stop it in the first place.
