I'm already following heihei and was so happy that they make things in similar style to how I sew when I found them actually!

It's funny, I'm an art student and a professor of mine recommended I follow heihei on insta after seeing some of my clothes and said they look similar to my style and I'd like them; it was so sweet of her.

Does anyone have recommendations on tights for dolly kei? I want to get more use out of my 2008 dolly phase clothes, most of which are black and maroon. Back then I wore good ol' black and white striped socks and they're not as versatile as I thought at the time.

You're probably better off buying secondhand off yja/fril/mercari to start with. The real issue for western girls is the natural kei market isn't active enough, not enough girls dressing up means not enough girls looking to buy, so you end up being unable to find a buyer at all.

As for the pricing , the fancy stuff with like 3-5 tiered skirt each with like lines of pintucks and lines of ruffles and also lines of lace and edging on every tier like >>10374109 and >>10374108 sell for upwards of $230 at closet child or yja. The more normal-looking stuff like >>10374106 has a couple of skirts that aren't tiered or pintucked, the value for those falls drastically to like $30.

If you can fit and they match your outfits/color palette, Abilletage is ideal for dolly-kei. Taobao shops like Mu Fish have great legwear too. Otherwise there's not a lot of pressure to look for anything specific. Just try to aim for a vintage look inspired by Eastern European folk costumefairytale. tales.

There was even a Yama Kei themed anime in 2013 called Yama no Sasume. Must have been a thing.

From what I can tell, Yama Kei is identifiable by shorts with tights or long socks, which makes sense as an outdoors-y style if you need movement and don't want to get caught on anything.

Not that I've ever found. It either has a different name in Japan or it's a Western invention. I remember a theory that Hama is simply a summer Mori look. I hate it. Some of the brands in this thread use a lot of artificial fibers and make it look good in pictures, but in person it shines and can feel awful to the touch, and it doesn't jive with the natural image of the style. This is why I've never bought anything from Liz Lisa or Axes Femme. It's really noticeable with velvet, cotton velvet is fine (silk velvet is almost impossible to find), but polyester velvet is godawful, both the look and to the touch.

I noticed westerners tend to use more western thrifted items which may give it a different feel. This may give 'hama kei' a different feel as well.

I feel like Hama wasn't necessarily a thing in Japan, just part of the west's obsession with trying to categorize every little thing. I can see it being basically mori but it was shot on the beach or in specific colours that reminded them of the ocean, so someone decided it was a whole new thing.

That said, general mori aesthetic (layering, textures, soft materials) combined with a beach theme (sea shell necklace, starfish hair ornament, a crocheted shawl that reminds you of a fishing net, lovely bluish colours) sounds so, so lovely. Even if hama isn't its own thing I am very much in love with the idea.
