I think they may help somewhat by physically blocking some droplets from coughs, sneezes, etc. I watched a scientist explain why clothing is not particularly worrisome to be considered a carrier for the virus.

That said, these types of masks aren't airtight by any means. You could still breathe in contaminated air droplets around it. My guess is that they are good if literally nothing else is available, but I know they would not be considered appropriate PPE since they aren't airtight. Hospitals have specialized duckbill masks which their employees are required to try on in order to ensure an airtight seal.

CORVID-19 particles have an average size of around 0.1 microns. Even the "general" Asian face asks tend to be PM2.5 which is only made to stop up to 2.5 micron (good for hay fever and common cold, but not CORVID-19). Al trough bigger droplets fall down right away, smaller ones can stay up to 3 hours in the air. It'll stay even longer on smooth surfaces like plastic and metal.

Most people are recommended to use surgeon masks which can stop up to 80% of particles as small as 0.0007 micron, people who are very sick and need to be in public as well as doctors who are continously around patients are adviced N95/FFN2 masks or better. Those stop 95/94% of particles size 0.0007micron.

However, something is better than nothing. Cotton for example stops 22% of particles as small as 0.0007 microns.

Masks only work if worn correctly and disposed when they should be. Otherwise, you actually increase the change of getting sick.

Dust bags and some interfacing are made out of non-woven material. N95 masks are made out of non-woven material -- though a very particular high-grade non-woven material. Therefore, people think those bags/interfacing may be helpful. Stop suggesting this. Most people should not be using a surgeons mask in a mask shortage. Even those at hospitals are using it only when absolutely necessary.

Normal masks are fine to use especially if you're not sick and need to wear it for a long period of time. But you shouldn't need to unless someone in your home is sick.

Surgical masks aren't difficult to breathe through at all. Surgeons and nurses have to wear them for hours and hours and hours while in the OR. You're confusing them with the duckbill n95 filtering masks for airborne precautions, which are fitted to the face.

>> No.10361773

>>10361727
Any mask you have handmade is not considered good enough to be personal protective equipment. Label them as fashion masks and put a disclaimer on your listing that they are not a medical safety device. Should be good then.

Also, I think people are confused about what masks people mean, and where the shortages are. N95 masks are the ones that are top priority. In the very beginning, people started hoarding these (I remember posts going around saying they can be found at home depot etc.) These masks are rigid and need to be fitted to your face, otherwise they are not effective. The general public should not be using/hoarding these.

If you are concerned about spreading the virus, it should be fine to wear a surgical mask. These masks do not offer adequate protecting for coronovirus to prevent you from getting infected as they leak in air from the sides so virus particles can get in. But, the material does filter some, and if you sneeze or cough it prevents you from spreading droplets. So in this sense a surgical mask is much better than no mask! Now I say this for situations where you absolutely have to go out: to get groceries or medicine for a sick partner or family member, to get gas in your car, to get other medical care. Otherwise you should just be staying home because the risk of getting sick or getting others sick is not worth it.

In a similar way, home made masks offer a tiny bit of protection too, and they will protect other people. Make them from a tightly woven fabric. Boil the fabric beforehand to shrink it, and sterilize it. You can also purchase disposable air filters and leave a pocket for them in your mask. There are actually hospitals that are taking donations of handmade masks bc they are out of N95 masks AND surgical masks, and they are down to using scarves and bandanas. If seagulls want to make masks and send them off, there are lists floating around of facilities accepting donations.

Apart from the fact they've already been removed from their packaging and therefore probably wouldn't be accepted anyway it just seems stupid. I work in a hospital and they (would) stock both elastic and tie on. Pretty much every staff member prefers the elastic because the tie on ones are a bitch to tie/take off. However, I assume the elastic ones are slightly more expensive because the masks per box ratio is noticeably lower compared to the tie ons, so the elastics always run out quicker.

Yea and theres nurses who deny the flu shot and nurses who think vaccines cause autism. Ive seen nurses willingly and knowingly marry druggies and become one themselves.

Unless you are actively working with covid patients, i genuinely dont think you get a say. As someone who works not only with them, but in the emergency room where we are now treating EVERYONE as a potential, we are reserving surgical masks for constant wear by workers only, as well as goggles. We dont allow any visitors (except very specific instances) anywhere in the hospital, and the only time patients get a mask is if they are being transported from their room to a different place.

Confirmed (or heavily suspect) patients we are wearing n95 respirators which do not work unless you are properly fitted by a professional. Confirmed and aerosoled (intubated, trach, breathing treatments, anything that vaporizes or includes respiratory treatment) we go full PPE- booties, extra long gloves, special gowns, bonnets, goggles, respirator/PAPR)

As sweet as all these fabric masks are, donate them to places like nursing homes or long term care. Unfortunately they do little to nothing for frontliners and are literally the same as a bandana. Almost none of us agree with this reusing/long term wear of these otherwise disposable items, but its this or nothing or no job. Hospitals are starting to not allow us to use our paid time off if we are healthy and able to work. Mine wont even give us access to the operating room changing rooms and showers to decontaminate before clocking off.

Tldr; wash your hands. Give us your respirators. Fabric masks do little to nothing for active covid. Be patient with us while we try our best to help you.

Maker of this mask here! ^o^/ I actually made a ton of different masks but Lace Market is being a bitch to me about it and deleted my listing for being "not lolita" :/ (after selling 5 already... wut?) If they don't let me put them up again and you want one, message MirrorMannequin on LM to see what I have ready or to get a custom one made! For everyone being picky about the ribbon, this was an example with ribbon ties and they were/are available with elastic too. (It's really about personal fit.
