Katsucon Masquerade sucked. Went in for craftsmanship judging and the judges told me they were too tired to get up and look at my costume. Then one of them kept trying to kick me out the room everytime I finished explaining an element of my cosplay. Honestly, regardless of what the organizers do, it's the attendees that are going to decide if it fails or not. Meaning if they would be willing to make the flight/cross country drive + spending money on a hotel to go to the new con. Most cosplayers don't really care about the programming for Katsu. So even if the new con is education oriented, people can just ignore that shit and come to cosplay and treat it like a summer Katsucon. It's just a matter of how many people would actually be willing to do that though.

I think the pressure will come from the Gaylord Center themselves to make it a Summer Katsucon event because last year summer didn't bring a lot of revenue for hotel. I'm willing to see if Katsucon gonna abandoned and push for a summer event for everyone. Went to my first katsucon this year and honestly I’m underwhelmed. Artist alley was small; though it did have some good knock out artists and I got maybe 3 good prints. Dealers hall was the same generic thing every other booth.

Food options at con were limited and expensive. The con floor is small so no matter what you feel like you’re just packed in with other people and the gathering locations just can’t support larger gatherings (r I p my hero gathering and fire emblem gathering) And it’s too cold to go outside and get some freedom from the crowds inside.

It seems like everyone’s trying to be a ‘cosplay elite’ so there’s no atmosphere of “oh I’m excited we’re cosplaying the same series!” And it’s more just looking at someone to see if you look better than them or not.

The only good thing is the late hours of the con and the drinking, but without interesting panels happening at night all you do is get drunk and go to sleep.

All in all this con is a 4 or 5 out of 10

I had a room on the 3rd floor atrium, and it was fun watching the peasants in the gazebo from directly above them. Is this what going to a con as a an adult is like?

Anyone else feel like taping off the gazebo is a mistake? The two main gathering spots are around the gazebo on the third floor and the fountains on the first floor. They already tape off half of the fountain area for the group shoots. Taping off half of the second floor as well and it really limits the space you can stand/wander around. I dunno, it just feels counter productive to try to manage crowds by giving them even less space to wander.

I didn’t feel like making a thousand reply posts so I’m just going to post this one. I’m obviously the person above who rated the con as underwhelming.

It’s not that I didn’t try to socialize. I brought ribbons and things to hand out; even though I didn’t see anyone else excited to see people cosplaying the same thing I went up to people to grab selfies and be like yeah I love this character too! Who knows maybe my cosplay just sucked or people were exhausted but I really didn’t feel any engagement towards other cosplayers unless they already knew them.

THE OBVIOUS EXCEPTION BEING when people were drunk. I think I talked to more people in a single hour at any given night then I did the whole day during the convention.

And as for the limited food options; duh it’s a con I know things are going to be expensive. But so many other conventions do things like food trucks, and food booths set up in dealers hall, etc. maybe because the Gaylord has actually food places inside of it they don’t allow outside venders but it was still something I noticed.

Everyone’s got their own opinions of cons and what they want/look for but in my opinion katsucon was cliquey, crowded, and over all just kind of boring. Maybe if I went with different people it would be better but all in all I think it’s just set up to be an underwhelming convention.

Best part of this con was that the lighting was good for pictures and dealers/artist alley stayed open until 8. Everything else was just mediocre

It's way too fucking packed. Getting to the little market food place was a nightmare with shoulder-to-shoulder traffic. Same with the door they let reg people in.

Also fuck the parking lot where the airplane is. If they're going to make that parking then they need to make a way to get to registration from there without going around the entire fucking hotel.

Katsucon is like a photoshoot con. People treat it like a fashion show. That's why it can be really cliquey and anti-newbee. People are too busy getting the new photo sets done.
For me, if a person doesn't wanna vibe with me then I say fuck it, good bye and move to another spot. Didn't do any of the Facebook or Discord meetup. I just randomly met new dudes at the Gazebo or the bar and we had fun talking about cosplay, hobby and shiet. I don't even care if they cosplay something I don't know. If a cosplay looks cool, I'm gonna ask them how they made it/where they bought it.

Next year I'm staying at the Residence Inn across the street from the Gaylord after seeing what they look like. Went there to help my friend with moving his cosplays and his room was far bigger than a Gaylord room with a small kitchen and full sized refrigerator.

They even had free breakfast while I had to pay $20 for the Gaylord's buffet. Lesson learned: Fuck the Gaylord, go across the street.

I had the best time at Katsucon. I gathered the One Piece group to bring to Funimation and the Fountain. Highlight was a kid Luffy who wanted to fight me and he did the Jet Gatling gun with spectators cheering him on. I’m definitely going next year

And the castlevania shoot. I sent this to the creator as well since we are good friends. Outstanding job by all the cosplayers. Everyone was so friendly too.

If you want lots of cool cosplay and beautiful backdrops Dokomi has that, most cosplayers hang out and take pictures in the park rather than the con itself so you don't have to buy tickets. MCM London's also pretty big and has high level cosplay thanks to the Eurocosplay finals taking place at their october installment. For party cons, since european cons usually end around 6pm you're not going to find the same kind of vibe but there are afterparties, I know MCM has afterparties at the bar across from the con every night.

2) there's a fucking chipotle in the harbor. nandos is also reasonable especially if you and some friends go in together on the family meals. elevation burger is crowded but reasonable. use order ahead so you're not standing in line for ages.

3) housekeeping gives you free coffee and waters. more if you give them two bucks and keep the visible part of your room non-disastery.

Katsu is expensive but the food part doesn't have to be.

I do weigh in the inflated dealer price against online shopping + fees + shipping and buy the cheaper option, yeah. That's just smart.

But I didn't have any problem getting food during Katsu. There's a CVS with some sandwiches and shit nearby, and the restaurants tended to be $30 max per person. That's not expensive if you have a decent income.

National Harbor is a tourist trap. Price gouging for food is standard practice and is to be expected from these types of places. Complaining about it like this is some groundbreaking shit that they're pulling is the most juvenile and sheltered shit ever. It's like going to a movie theater and being surprised nachos cost $8.

People already gave you options. You can bring some instant ramen or other shit from home. You can drive to McDonald's which is fairly close. You can order from doordash/uber eats.

You can also drive 10 minutes away from the harbor and into the local area. There's a Chinese takeout place, a small cheap local Mexican food joint and a Filipino food joint next to it. There's also a small liquor store there for all the people complaining about expensive booze. All within 10 minutes drive from the harbor.

12 minute drive gets you to an area with a Taco Bell/KFC, McDonald's and a Domino's pizza.

If you're not willing to make a 20 minute round trip, pack more food from home, or order from a delivery service, then I don't know what to tell you. Enjoy your over priced shit at the harbor then I guess. But don't act like you don't have any options available to you. You have to choose which you value more, paying a reasonable price for food at the cost of your personal time and effort, or paying extra for food as a trade off for the convenience of not having to drive for 20 minutes.

Or better yet you can just stay your broke ass home. Conventions aren't a hobby for poor people anyway.
