Went to Dragoncon for the first time this year. Got shit-housed every night, which took quite the toll on my brain & body. However, it was pretty fun to rave until ~6 am every night.

One night, I was crossplaying as Miu Iruma. Got lost because that whole set up is a shit show. Ran up to a cop to ask for directions in one of the hotels. I had a bottle of what looked to be motor oil (whiskey, sour apple Pucker & Red Bull) & a breathalyzer around my neck attached via a choker. The dude looked at me & was like "Now, nothing you're doing is illegal, but you're walking probable cause. The hotel you're looking for is up those stairs blah blah blah."

I tend to get fairly drunk at most cons, but only after around 9 & I've done everything I wanted to do already. Why? Because that's when you get into the weirdest, funnest shit!

As noted, I do crossplay/cross-dressing stuff. At Ohayocon one year, I was just my normal crossdressing alter-ego. Walk into a rave. See a girl getting grinded on, with a look of absolute disgust on her face. I wave her over & ask if she's having a good time. She says no. Ask her if she's drunk enough for this. She says "fuck no." I pull out a flask of peppermint schnapps from under my tutu, present it, she chugs from it. I chug from it. We end up dancing & making out. Well, 20 minutes later, she bounces with her friends - who my friends had been hanging out with. My dude was like "Oh, yeah man. She left crying because that was only her second kiss in her entire life & it freaked her out that it was with a crossdresser."

Last summer, I met this dude dressed up as Lil Peep. Dude was awesome & so were his friends. My friends & I tried doing Molly that evening instead of drinking - I say "tried" because that's NOT what it ended up being. So. We were light on the alcohol. At the end of the rave, we're hanging with Peep & his friends. They're like "fuck, we're not done partying yet." Told them we didn't have liquor back at

Every night of every con is a bizarre experience & I Love every second of it. Shit happens when you party in a skirt.

What's it like tripping on acid at a con?

Me & my roomies did that in 2015, probably 8 of us total. Half of the group stayed in the room chilling out, talking, drinking a bit and overall had a relaxing time, although my husband said he felt like he wasted the con because he didnt wanna leave the room.

Myself and some others went out and explored. If you think congoers dressed up at night look freaky sober or just drunk, they look like absolute monsters while tripping. If you have a good hold on yourself while tripping outside a con setting, you'll do fine at a con. No need to overdo your dose though.

My one friend who had never taken acid (or smoked or done any drugs and rarely drank) dosed while I was in the cosplay contest, she said she thought I had taken mine already (WHY WOULD I) and so I rushed back to the room immediately after the contest to take care of her. It wasnt good. But she did alright once I got there. Didnt trip, per se, all that energy manifested into physical illness and nausea/vomiting. I spent a couple hours making sure she was okay and went out wandering the con afterwards.

Now that I'm older I've actually come full circle and appreciate letting loose at cons. It's a vacation from the day to day bullshit of every day life. I consumed an assload of edibles for last year's Sakuracon and had the greatest time just wandering the artist alley, talking to randoms and laughing at goofy art. Sure, it would have been just fine sober, but there's something so magical about this tiny spec in time, out of your senses surrounding by people that care about what you care about ... Not to pontificate or anything. It doesn't matter. Getting trashed is fun!

I’ve rolled and dropped acid at cons. I’ve literally gotten more fucked up while drinking when I was younger. Drugs are a fun plot device, but without good friends then it doesn’t really mean much. When you are in a safe and welcoming environment, you have great conversations with people.

It does require a level of self awareness and being able to handle the intensity in public, otherwise stay in your room or don’t do it.

The halls I knew so well had become a labyrinth of color, awe and horror. Costumes shifted and churned, makeup and masks followed you wherever you looked and the long hallways seemed to become never ending passages.
Actually had to ask her if it was just me or of we had been walking for half an hr. The hall just kept extending.
Get past security, ez. Despite both of our eyes being completely dialated.
Got to the rave and it was INTENSE. The lasers and lights kept flashing in a way that caused everything to move. The walls and ceilings looked like they had veins and the bass became a monsters heart beat.
You know those guys that swing lights around and dance? I know who they do it for now. They are the gods that walk the rave battlefield spreading their light to those who would watch.
Security stopped by and asked if we were okay. He was a cool one, he knew what was up and said as long as we aren't sleeping or making a scene to just enjoy ourselves.
We stayed in that maelstrom of color till it shut down.
Went back to the room, grabbed a blanket then headed outside. We played under a tree and stared at the giant elephant mural until we finally came down around 430 am.
I'll never be able to beat that experience. So I probably wont ever do acid again.
If you are going to do it I've got 3 recommendations.
1. Do it with people you trust. Dont yolo it with people who will toy with you.
2. Drink a ton of water while you trip. Some chemical compounds act as a diuretic. You will shit your brains out.
3. Dont panic. It is only temporary. You will be fine. That's an easy way to get a bad trip.
There's a lot more details that I'm leaving out but that's the big experience

Drove mates to the con the next day while hideously hung over. Like, not over the DD limit (I checked) but not far off and barely able to see.

Drove for three hours. Passed out in the hotel.

Then went at it again later that night when I came around. I remember very little of that weekend.

Another con - the first year Spike Spencer came to the country - I got fucked up drunk on the Friday, fell off a bar stool and hit my head. I remember nothing off that weekend.

Same con, different year. Drank half a bottle of cask-strength scotch while playing Cards against Humanity.

Apparently when drunk I stop being an autitist and actually behave like a normal human being. People prefer me with drink taken - less handup and anxiety.

i'd like to think i'm a fun drunk, or a 'merry' drunk. i really just enjoy having fun with my friends and strangers alike. i'm definitely less of an autist while buzzed.

there was an instance this year where we had predrinks in the hotel room and i drank 3 bottles of cheap wine. felt great until we actually got to the con party and i spent the rest of the night throwing up in the bathroom. i don't remember anything that night, but my friends took me back to the hotel and i slept until morning. i'm never really that bad though, wine is just the enemy.

i do enjoy parties but my favourite thing really is sitting outside a con with great company and some bevs. chilling in a hotel room and playing games is fun too, with friends and drink. i can only really be bothered going to a party if i know it isn't shit, not too expensive, and i like what i'm wearing.

really, nothing beats cosplay and booze, especially with the right people.

I've taken it a number of times. It's an odd drug for me because even though your perception of things is irregular it makes sense to you in the moment. Oh this sounds feels "hot?" Whatever, makes sense. When I do something like drink my perception changes because I'm drunk, but it is very obvious to me that I am processing things differently. I know I'm slurring and that I'm not as coordinated. The sociopathy comment may have been a poor word choice, but one of my most vivid acid memories is doing it with my friend and going to the local college bar. We were both high as fuck but from our point of view we were on an unreachable intellectual level compared to the people at the bar, whose drunkeness seemed animal-like to use while tripping. It surprised me coming to the UK how much everyone here does cocaine, you go into the hotel rooms and people just instantly start railing up lines of coke. In Australia cocaine is a very rare drug and things like Mushrooms and Psychs are the more mainstream drugs and are probably not something you're gonna do at a crowded con, so it was pretty shocking how liberally people were just doing lines at the after-parties and meetups.

However, I don't know what cons you go to but more often than not it's very noticeable for me to recognize lack of basic hygiene with people, the amount of people who creepily ask for my photos/facebook info, or some other weird shit. 2 or 3 beers combined with my lunch + walking around is enough to make me shrug some of that bullshit off during my time off work/life. I don't know about you but after a +40 work week+personal responsibilities+rent/bills, having a con to just unwind at is nice and with the weird shit that goes on beer can help with that. I dunno about how you relax, won't judge like you do, but for many of us just a few beers to just take the edge off of BS that the con can dish out is definitely a good thing. Enjoy cons how you want, just realize we all have our own ways of enjoying it.

Ran in to a dude I met before at this cosplay picnic and decided to invite him back to the room for drinks. Me and my friend where already drunk and pretty much poured booze down him like a kitchen sink. It all depends on the con and who you meet, some cons like AWA/ALA are just non stop parties, and other smaller cons may not have jack shit. Cosplay helps a lot to get into parties, most people won't invite random dude in bazinga outfit to room. Most the time I'll have some beers during luck, talk with people and then find what's good.

Honestly it depends on the con's size how trashed I get and what the con is known for.

Many of the smaller cons, or known party cons, around I'll tend to drink a bit more during lunch or hang out a bit longer at a bar since not too much going on with fewer panels and such. I tend to find myself just chilling with others for fun than just "be at a panel because it exists" or walk the vendor hall/AA again.

For larger cons I tend to get a slight buzz going throughout the con, but usually just keep any drinking to just around lunch time or any time I need to recharge my phone for a few minutes. Only really get a bit tipsy during the room parties.


Some other factors are going to depend how much of the con is linecon for a panel, standing 45 minutes buzzed is far better than 45 minutes sober for a panel. If it's around a holiday or a friends birthday I may drink more too.

I am more concerned about overdose than addiction because you can recover from addiction, death is permanent. A little nitpicky but FYI there isn't really a hard/ soft opiate distinction. It's like wine vs vodka, vodka is stronger but you can get drunk/ addicted to wine. If you know someone who takes heavy doses of percocet/ vicodin/ even codeine or tylenol 3 a day they are still selective mu-opioid agonists just like my heroin. I have seen a lot of people fuck up their lives with that misconception.

You should definitely go with a friend if you can (it could be a bit overwhelming to do it alone IMO.) You won't really run into too much debauchery if you don't go out of your way. Last year I got so plastered at an 18+ con, that I forgot everything I did from about 9pm to 6amish. Now, this wouldn't be a major issue, if I hadn't spent a good portion of that talking about my waifu, and trying to convince some random guy's wife about why they should watch her show. I learned how to bartend, if you are awkward and tend to be forgettable at parties its best to have a skill that people can associate you with. Here's how I did it.
Get a few con drinks (few ingredients, cheap, high alcohol content, sweet) down. Try:

Next step is to find a girl that is known in the community, I met mine in my university anime club. If a cosplay girl can stand to be around you then it lets people know you are not a creep.

once you have a core group down and they find you interesting (if they go out of their way to say hi then you fit in, if not then start over with a new group.)
If step 3 is working then step 4 will happen automatically. If people want you around that will increase exponentially. Everyone is at a con to have a good time, if you help that, they will want you around.
You may need a friend upgrade if the people you are hanging around with are limiting your ability to expand your social circle.
