afaik the association comes with how gaijin wear it to anime cons. cons there are different than here and have different connotations. japanese people probably don't get that most western countries aren't full of cities with alt fashion safe havens like they do. a lot of girls tend to think highly of westerners who are lifestyle lolita because even many of them don't wear lolita around to grocery shopping.

- Make your own lace toppers
- Buy brand, deal with the stretching and use sock glue to try and keep them OTK (probably only worth it if you are borderline able to fit, rather than say, size 10 feet and >40cm calves)
- Buy offbrand on ebay/ali/taobao and deal with the fact that the lace is less likely to be nice

Idk if I'd say it is costumey but the Japanese pretty much find extreme ends of jfashion to all be pretty weird and sort of just ignore things outside of the norm rather than become dickish and harass people the way westerners do.

You don’t have to worry about sizing for accessories and I agree that white or black is generally a nice, safe choice. Regular nail polish or gel? Because the pic you posted seems to be gel and they don't really chip.

Nail polish:

1. Thicker top coat, and use a decent brand top coat. The thicker you make the polish the less likely it is to chip.

1.a - Along these lines, if you add large glitter and stickers and then cover it with layers of topcoat it's also less likely to chip, but it'll be a complete pain in the arse to take it off later. Look up soaking your nails in foil + nail polish remover, and have some nail oil handy when it's time to remove it.

1.a.a - If you use a peel-off basecoat then removing really thick nail polish layers will be much easier (however, avoid thin layers with a peel-off basecoat, it makes them chip more easily). Innisfree makes one, but I've had to buy it in-store, not online.

1.b - If you're feeling particularly industrious you can add a layer of top coat every morning

2. Make sure it's dry before you do anything with it. (usually 3+ hours if you did the usual base coat + 2 layers colour + top coat)

3. Avoid cheap polishes. Not to say expensive branded polishes don't chip (they do), but the cheaper ones tends to fall apart even if you have a decent topcoat on. Sephora house brand is my baseline for "not expensive but decent".

3.a. On that note, OPI's liquid sand is weirdly long-lasting (dat texture though).

UV gel nails:

- For the real thing the manicurist has to cure the nail polish under a UV lamp. It's actually a layer of colored uv glue, cured directly onto your nails like glue, so it really shouldn't chip at all.

- Most of the downsides is that you need to go to a salon to get it done, and nail art like your pic usually isn't cheap. Your nails grow out within the week, so basically it'll last maybe 1-2 weeks because biology.

- If it says "gel polish" but it doesn't cure under a UV lamp, then it's just regular nail polish, the finish is supposed to mimic UV gel polish.

Good choices are navy, white, offwhite, ivory, grey, black. Just don't do all the colours together, pick like three colours to make your coord out of, and be careful with the tones of certain colours (eg - don't mix your whites, careful with grey undertones. Navy should be a pretty standard colour with lolita brands by now but if you go offbrand be careful of the undertone too.)

(in the case of ivory blouse you can also match it with brown shoes/bag. Just don't do a brown blouse with it, probably looks a bit jarring.)

Water, especially hot water, will make your nail polish chip so much more easily. Your nails absorb water in the shower, causing the C curve to flatten out, and as they dry, it tightens up again. This stress causes cracks in the polish, which then get chipped off.

Take less hot and shorter showers, and minimize the time that your hands are in contact with the water.

Along with that, here are some steps to extend the life of your manicure:

- before you paint your nails, dip a q-tip in acetone and go across your nails, drying them out. This will help your basecoat stick better.
- choose a basecoat that suits your needs, and make sure it's from a decent company. For long-lasting manicures, I used CND Stickey.
- apply basecoat and wait ~5-10 minutes for it to dry
- apply your polish, use decent brands (most drugstore brands aren't good). For fair priced polish that last long, I recommend Color Club.
- when you apply your polish, multiple thin coats is better than one thick coat. Go slow, be neat, and don't go all the way to the sides of your nail and end up flooding your cuticles. Wrap the free edge of your nail with your polish.
- let dry for a few minutes. It doesn't need to be completely dry.
- add a topcoat. If you like the look of gel nails, get a thick topcoat. If you used glitter, you'll probably want multiple layers of topcoat because it will absorb into the glitter and cause it to have an uneven finish. I use Seche Vite. It dries to the touch in about 10-15 minutes, and dries completely to avoid denting in about 30-40. Wrap your tips with topcoat, too.
- finally, when you have your nails done, be aware of them! Take a little more time doing things that involve your hands. Don't rip open packaging, put together furniture, or scrub the tub without gloves on and then wonder why your nails are chipping. If you want them to last, take care of them.

Skirt length: Don't go for big poof as it will shorten the skirt further. Lower poof/old school poof is good. Wear OTKs or tights, a large expanse of skin makes the skirt look obviously short. Long bloomers for deliberate peeking bloomers may work well to reduce said skin gap.
High waist: wearing a closed cardigan or jacket with a lower waist is probably the most failsafe way to improve the look. Avoid cropped jackets, capelets and shrugs Belts or sashes can sometimes work but can also cross into looking awkward, particularly if the texture or style doesn't match the dress.

You're gonna want to call the shop and talk to them (yes, in Japanese. Get someone to help you if you can't) and ask them if they can hold it until you get back/to arrange a pickup.

It's not a One Day pickup thing, you have to make an appointment when you want to pick up the dress, sometimes they don't have it in the shop even though it's "ready" if you haven't made an appointment to pick it up. And of course, if it's not ready, then it's just not ready.

So far the sites I know are

The things I'm interested in is ease of communication (decent enough English?), overall quality (do the pictures accurately represent what you get?), shipping and handling (is it like a warehouse so they'll hold things for a time period or you have to haul all at once?). Have bought from all of these as well as Y!JA, Mercari, Fril, etc, although I don't buy much from auction sites anymore, too many undisclosed stains but maybe I just had bad luck. There's also Tokyo Alice on Rakuten, which is another secondhand shop, I've only bought from them once or twice and everything went fine.

Closetchild is my favorite place to buy from, they always get things shipped out right away and prices are always very reasonable. I've never had a problem with an order from Closetchild. Wunderwelt is also good but I find them a bit overpriced on their used stuff. I haven't had to deal with Closetchild customer support, but I do know Wunderwelt has decent English-speaking staff and they worked with me when I had a package get lost in customs. They ship internationally and are like any other online store, you make an order and they ship it directly to you.

For basically anything else you'll need a shopping service. I mostly use Zenmarket, but they can be a bit slow. There's a Japanese shopping service thread right now I think, if you want recommendations. Shopping services purchase the items for you and hold them at their warehouse, where you can then combine shipping and have everything shipped to you at once.

Not secondhand, but if you're into gothic it's also worth mentioning that Atelier Pierrot ships internationally, and they carry most of the gothic brands that are still in business, plus free shipping over 20000 yen.

As stupid as it sounds, I keep a deflated kids' petticoat from ebay (anyone remember victoriangirldress?) specifically for very old pieces that can't hold much poof but look better with the skirt filled out a little. You could try along the same vein with a cheap petticoat from aliexpress (this one looks almost exactly like the victoriangirldress ones from years ago

I have a few pieces like this, and I usually wear them with just a simple underskirt rather than a petti. They don't look right without some sort of foundation garment underneath. An underskirt or flat petti will help it from caving in or looking warbley.

The amount of poof you need for pettis varies a lot based on both the skirt shape/volume but also your body shape. Girls with very wide hips and small waists need less poof than girls who are rectangular, to achieve the same silhouette. I can't wear cupcake pettis personally, or else I look like pic related.

If you're in doubt about needing more or less poof, have someone take a picture from a bit of a distance, and then you can see more clearly if things look "correct".

I hang all my dresses. I fold them over the hanger bar at the waist so there's no stress on the shoulders, and then I use the top part of the hanger triangle thingy to hold any detachable parts.

That way the dress doesn't get damaged or stretch so much, and also I can fit two rows of hanging dresses in my closet (but they take up more horizontal space).

Well, ita threads won't teach you much about pairing items together bc most of the time things are posted bc of issues of fit, quality, shitty taste, etc. You'll see in CoF and ita threads that there's often coords that people consider "borderline".

But in general...

>start simple, don't try to be creative
>match your lace to your base pieces and keep it consistent throughout the coord
ex: white lace on JSK -> white blouse, white OTKs, white lace on headpiece, etc.
>stick with simple color palettes, use only two or three colors
ex: black JSK, white blouse, red tights, black boots.
ex: Navy JSK, ivory blouse and OTKs, navy tea parties.
>stick within a color family and balance tones throughout your coord
ex: navy blouse, sax skirt, offwhite tights, navy shoes, sax KC

I made a thing comparing two pics recently posted to CoF that maybe illustrates these concepts better.

Your picture is such a good explanation but I would add that you can add in neutrals that aren't in a print, left would fine with brown shoes and a brown hat ribbon. Matching shoes to dress is only needed for that OTT sweet/ AP clone style. The right is such a clusterfuck that having matching pinks wouldn't help, the print colors contrast so hard it will always look a bit ita. Nice matching neutrals with a couple nice red accessories could make it look passable but the designer of that dress needs to fucking stop

Idk how other people do it, but I find it easiest to do:

- Tights if using
- Blouse
- Bloomers
- Socks
- JSK
- Petticoat
- Shoes

But it might depend on the JSK and how you prefer getting into a dress. I prefer to step into the dress rather than pull it over my head, as I usually have my makeup and hair done first - and then it's a lot easier to get the petticoat looking nice if I put it on under the JSK.

Lash care Q.

I've been using the Huda #8 as my go-to gyaru lash recently and I love them, but I feel like they fall apart super quickly (basically through cleaning one of the threads on the band gets untucked and then after 1-2 more wears/cleans the fibers come out in chunks). At $20 a pop they're too expensive for me to justify rebuying every other month, so-

1. Am I just fucking up cleaning them and I need to be more gentle? I get kind of enthusiastic with the glue since the brand I have now doesn't stick as well, but for cleaning I've just been soaking them in water and then picking the glue off. Usually some glue gets on the fibers and that's where the damage starts.

2. If I am cleaning them correctly and they just have a short shelf life for whatever reason, what's a cheaper lash that I can get that has the same look/shape? Or, are there some treatments/steps I can take so the band lasts longer?

It sounds like you're only getting 3 wears out of them? I haven't worn any Huda lashes but I've worn a lot of other brands and never noticed a major difference in durability.

Well, first off you need better glue and you need to work on your application. There shouldn't be much of anything on the lashes to "pick off". You just need a tiny TINY line of glue to hold them on.

Once you have good glue, if they keep popping off it's because they aren't fitted properly. Either they're too long or they aren't bent into the right shape for your lid.

Second, change how you're doing your mascara. I know all the gurus will put mascara on both their falsies and their lashes to "blend" them but obv then you have to clean your falsies bc they'll get much dirtier. Instead, do your mascara as normal. Then put on your falsies. Then use a clean spoolie or lash/brow comb to help "blend" your lashes together.

For my lashes, I have a few pairs I alternate through. If they get super dirty somehow (hot sweaty day, or I got mascara in them or something), then I'll soak them in some makeup remover for a minute or two, then let them air dry on a paper towel. But most of the time I just set them back in the tray and don't worry about it. I usually get about 10-20 uses out of a pair.

I had the shop girl take a peek at mine but she only asked questions about whether or not i was paying half or all, credit card or cash and filled out the money part of the form for me. Best to shoot them a email with your order number. I had to email them due to a timing issue but they got back to me within a couple hrs. Best to send them a email now before the holiday break. Why is not more common or encouraged to buy actual high-quality bags and footwear for Lolita?
I feel like oldfags or anyone properly acquainted with the style will talk about how important quality is, but everyone seems content with pleather handbags and shoes just because they're ~brand~. Like >>10312482 said, it's the style. For gothic and classic it's not as hard since a lot of us can just find neutral things from normie brands that match our coords, but a lot of sweet lolitas like to have bags that are an exact colour, shape or are part of a series and brands like AP and baby only make those in pleather. At least Moitie tried with their bat bags but most brands just don't.

By 'special wear' they are probably talking about novelty bags that only go with specific coords. Even if they wear it daily, they might have different bags to wear with their less expensive casual coords, and they save their 'special' burando stuff for events when they want to wear themed outfits with novelty bags.

>> No.10313196

A few things.

There's usually a tier to the shipping, for eg the first 500g will usually cost the same, so it makes more sense to order like 450g worth of stuff rather than a handful of stickers -- you'd still end up paying the same price in shipping. Usually every additional weight is a bit cheaper, eg- it might be $22 for the the first 500g, but the next 500g is $21, the next is $20, then you hit 5kg and the next 500g after 5kg starts to get more expensive because it's so darn heavy. So it makes sense to make bigger orders (up to point) to get the shipping per kg price down.

That, or just be located somewhere closer to China.

But you also have to take into account that this is the jfash board, a really nice t-shirt top from a decent jfash brand can easily cost you $40 with another $20 in shipping, and since it's jfash it's not like you can walk into Zara or F21 and find an alternative that you like all that easily. So if someone buys 3 $10 shirts and pays another $30 in shipping they already have 2 more shirts with the same amount of money.

Another common one is sweet lolita shoes. Yes, it costs a bomb to ship, but it's not like Payless stocks pink tea party shoes, so you're gonna end up ordering from very few places, one of them being taobao.

Does anyone have a worn pic with the sax cotton candy feet shoe color with a sax-colored AP dress so I can get an idea of whether it will match what I have? I hate how the "sax" accessories I have do not match with the various "sax" dresses I own and I'm sick of buying things that end up somehow not going with anything I already have.

I want to be sure the color will match before dumping 80 bucks onto shoes. I own the sax OP of sugary carnival, so if someone happens to have both this dress and the sax cotton candy feet shoes and can post both of them together that would give me a great idea.

In other news, can we please start reporting colors in hex in descriptions of dress so that we can actually effing match things? Especially since this fashion is both a) expensive and b) almost entirely purchased online, this would be smart. K rant over

See these look like 2 different blues to me! I can't find any other pictures besides this one you linked. I'll probably just end up getting it anyway, or maybe go for some bodyline crap. Who knows. Who needs shoes anyway.

How does jp umbrella sizing feel on a euro-sized person? Is it functional for heavy rain, or would I be accidentally getting water on my shoulders/skirt/purse as I move? I live in Texas now, so I've grown used to the luxury of super-sized umbrellas and the dread of surprise flood waters.

The shoes and bow are definitely two different blues. The shoes are darker.

Burando umbrellas aren't meant for rain. They're for aesthetics. Keep your practical umbrella for when it's raining.

If the soles were chunkier, they'd look better. With the right coord, they may work, but in general I'd say away.

well the website says "rainy and sunny", so I assume it's waterproof, i just don't know if it's wide enough to cover a whole coord. the other lolita umbrellas I found (on WW) said the width is 30"-35", whereas US umbrellas are 40"-45" wide

Ahh. I was trying too avoid thick or chunky soles or high heels I often we because they always hurt my ankles to wear and I'm a daily...I guess I'll just wait until later this year and place a custom order for lower heel height from a taobao brand so I can have them for next year (in a month by the time it comes winter where I live will be over already). I never really see flat Lolita or loliable boots but I hate wearing heeled shoes for everyday (part of why I like old school, I can wear Mary James instead of tea parties)

There are some flat ones I do own like the Bodyline ones but many have some heel still even if it isn't a very tall heel and I save those for meets.

>Burando umbrellas
Nah they’re for rain. But brand also sells parasols, which are meant for sun protection. I guess you can use parasols during rainy weather, but their shape is not great for wind and for keeping the rain off you.
t. someone who has both brand umbrella and parasol

Would wearing a cream blouse under a white dress look shitty?
I’m stocking up on basics but I don’t want to buy something right off the bat that won’t go w the single dress I do own.
Thanks~

I know Marble has many items that are a mess, but honestly, every time they stay away from shiny fabrics and cheap lace I like them. Pic related are some (far from all) items that are currently in the Atelier Pierrot store that I think look good.
