I dabble a little bit. Formal kitsuke and advanced stuff (like seasonality and stuff) kind of intimidate me though. I'm already into too many things atm to justify spending much more money on kimono than I have to date, so my wardrobe will likely stay small. I currently own 2 yukata, around 4 other kimono, 5 obi and some accessories. I would like to, however, make sure I get some more stays and whatnot so the few kimono I own look nicer. I don't have an obi ita or an eri shin right now but I would like to make some. Oh, and I'd like to buy some haori so I can wear them with kimono or other fashion.

I do a little kitsuke occasionally.

I usually make my own kimonos though. I'm tall and it's not worth the effort to try and find something that will work. Thankfully kimonos are fairly simple so I can whip one up in 3-4 days. I've made 5 at last count.

Hand sewing them to perfection with what people tell you are the only fabrics to use is arduous and time consuming

Using a machine for most of it and properly weighted domestic cotton/linen or silks is not hard at all. (I only hand sew the eri in place)

Sort of how some SCA folks insist it's not proper and authentic unless you make everything by hand from the underwear out. But some folks use a machine and get very comparable results with a little tweaking.

>It was attractive that young unmarried women waved their long sleeves. But, it was shameful that married women wore a kimono for expressions of love, because people considered them a flirt. Because of the holdover, people have been recognized that a furisode is only for young unmarried women even now in Japan.

However, that rule is getting lax recently, and more married women are wearing a Frisode at celebrations. Needless to say, though it is not recomended, modern people are reconsidering that it is good to make more chances to wear a Furisode.

That's kind of nice. Since the prevalence of kimono is declining all around, it's expensive, and difficult to put on, it's nice that people can take advantage of more opportunities to wear it.

A friend of mine expressed this sentiment and I feel the same - she has an extensive kimono collection, but didn't get into it until after married, and she is well past 30, and it made her sad she missed her opportunity to try wearing furisode. But an instructor told her she should just get one if she loves kitsuke this much and a furisode would make her happy.

obi is good, rule of thumb with obi is that you pick contrasting color or one that's in the print, or have it have the same kind of print on it. it shouldn't be matchy-matchy color wise, but it's hard to make it not look like crap. you really need hakama tho to tie it together!

You should fold it over the strips you tie it with under the obi to shorten it when worn - kimono are usually a standard length rather than customised because the length is customised when donning.

>> No.10357324

I'm pretty fat. My hips measure in at forty cm (I can feel the bone just under my skin, so that's never getting smaller) and my actual thighs come in at forty three when put together. I can't tell if ichiroya kimono will fit me. I'm guessing not, but what's the number to look for when looming for kimono? How much bigger should the waist measurement be than your body to allow you to walk and move without flashing everyone?

>> No.10357401

>>10357324
Do you mean 40 cm as a flat measurement? Or 40 inches all the way around? I don't understand these measurements, if you can clarify I could compare and help you...you should be measuring your hips all the way around because how flat or round your butt is will change whether the kimono can fit or not.

Also, some kimono will be larger than others. You usually size kimono by your height, and then buy the appropriate length, although you can wear a too short kimono without an ohashori (the fold under the obi) or fashionably above your ankles, and for a too long kimono fold a deeper ohashori. There isn't really such a thing as a waist or hip measurement for a kimono, since the garment is so rectangular. If your kimono won't close at the hips but closes ok at the top you could always wear with a hakama as well. (for komon at least)

Lastly, it is possible to modify kimono. I have a friend who is tallish and plus size (I think she's like 5'10?) and she takes the kimono apart at the sides and puts it back together using smaller seams. That gives her enough leeway for the kimono to close properly. She usually buys vintage kimono from sou_japan and Ichiroya. I don't recommend modifying it yourself unless you have some experience with sewing already though.

>> No.10357432

>>10357401
I meant 40 inches all the way around, but at my absolute widest around my thigh and butt area its 43 inches all the way around. I'm 5'3 so most if not all kimono should fit on me; I'm not too worried about height.

I'm actually looking at furisode. I had one but foolishly gave it away. They recipient doesn't care much about it but i feel too awkward to ask for it back. So I'm just replacing it and taking the chance to find a nicer color than bright orange. I'll keep the hakama suggestion in mind, though.

I don't have the confidence to modify kimono. It's intimidating to start changing around things on something you care about.

I have a collection but don't wear them, too self-conscious about my hips. My bmi is only 18 but I'm still not the right bodytype for kimono. Going to sell the one where I'm not in love with the fabric, and going to turn the ones that I do love in into meta-inspired wa dresses/skirts. Which means getting a lot better at sewing. Starting with the cotton yukata and wool kimono, will move on to silk once I feel confident.

>> No.10357664

No, don't buy something you don't love. Have you been to Japan? There's loads of second hand stores with loads of different colors. With yukata it is even more extreme, there's yukata with the craziest prints.

Sewing a cotton yukata is pretty easy if you have a tutorial. I made two entirely by hand, and it's time consuming but a relative beginner/low intermediate can do it. Except for the collar, most of it is straight pieces. Kimono has the same basic shape, but working with silk is probably harder, especially if you want to work in a lining.

Warning about antique kimono: many of them have bright red linings that bleed like a mofo, you can get them dirt cheap in recycle shops away from tourist attractions, I've found some for 500 yen, but be careful not to ruin them by washing.

Anon that's fucking stupid. There is no kimono bodyshape. You're supposed to look like a cylinder, because the kimono and the straight lines are what matters, not what's under it. PAD your body. PAD PAD PAD. Flatten your titties, pad your waist and back, and boom, right body shape. You might end up wearing like five towels when you're done, but you can still wear your stuff.

You can also customize a camisole/tank by sewing padding into it directly, so you can avoid the hassle of making sure everything is tied snugly when you get dressed.

I was gonna say, I buy nearly everything vintage fro sou_japan on Ebay and as long as you're good at sniping or manage to bid on something other people don't want you end up with kimono for $1.00 + like $3.00 shipping. Sometimes this happens with brand new obi too. But I have never ever seen them carry ladies' hakama unfortunately.

I have a friend that used to swear by Ichiroya, but no longer shops there bc they got too expensive. I think they used to do blind lots of mild to moderately damaged kimono; she got a box of like 30 of them for around $100. They don't do that anymore though.

I have never bought kimono off of Japanese auction sites but I have bought lolita and it's always been a really smooth and seamless experience. If the same pattern of pricing applies, I'm sure you can find a ton of stuff dirt cheap.

And other than that, not that I know of...if you want to buy anything other than a yukata, and you want it to be well made and not a polyester tourist luring nightmare, it would cost you hundreds from the price tags I've seen on ebay. pic related has the formulas i use. it is google translated (but simple to understand) but let me know if you want the Japanese one. usually i add the +5cm for length if i want to bother with ohashori otherwise it's not a problem. the most important measurements are front and back widths (前幅 and 後幅). you want to use the widest area on your body for the best fit. make sure you measure in whatever underthings you plan on wearing with the kimono. if the width measurements are big by a few cm you can still fix your kitsuke so don't worry about it being a little bigger. i hope this helps!

It shows on their website they also do samurai makeovers and couple makeovers, but honestly I want to be a cute maiko for a day. They provide the clothes and photoshoot area and cater to foreigners all the time, I'm just terrified of being the only giant male gaijin rocking up wanting the dainty lady makeup and whatnot. I just don't want them to think I'm some creep weirdo.

You should look into studios that specialize in crossdressing. Even they take you, chances are they won't have kimono or shoes in your size.

those maiko places have huge kimono most of the time. many of them specialize in dressing foreigners.

The problem is they specialize in dressing foreign women. The kimono probably don't account for men's broader shoulders and longer arms, and OP will end up with weird 3/4 sleeves even if everything else fits. See youtube video for reference.

I definitely wouldn't expect them to have any footwear in my size, I wear a men's US size 13 shoe.

I actually went there this year and they specify that they don't dress men as maiko/geisha. It's int he FAQ somewhere (maybe on the Japanese version the the site, not English...I forget)

absolutely don't know jack shit about those type of makeover salon but maybe one who does kabuki styles makeover would be better since crossdressing is an element of it.

In your opinion, should people really charge others for knowledge that should be free? Some kimono aspects are already hard enough to find resources to. To charge for something rare, seems unfair and limits who can learn such thing. Especially musubi's.

Charging for historical resources is often done to make sure the person hosting the information can afford to do so. It's like paying a fee to visit a museum. Yes you can look at art and such online for free but that art takes time and money to maintain. Same with online resources.

The thing is, kimono isn't exactly supposed to be your only way of living that's like wearing t-shirt and genes and trying tk say they're so special that it deserves a wage. It's fine if it's tutorials and what not, but if it's nothing nobody else can find there's no reason to put that behind a pay wall it's like they're trying to actually kill it. The more accessible it is tk people the more it will spread, but kimono has always been in the shorter stick of that since it's already a somewhat expensive clothing option (if you don't know where to look)
