Unanswered questions from the last thread:

Would it be possible to use the red maid dress pictured on the left to create the Maid Ichigo from TMM costume on the right? My plan is to use a matching fabric like: https://www.joann.com/symphony-broadcloth-solid-quilt-fabric/prd10006.html, to add the proper neckline, mandarin, and mandarin collar, then I would buy a white cotton fabric to sew on the white strip. The apron would be covering a majority of the awkward seam lines. If it works, it could save me a load of work in the process, but if the end result is going to look ugly, then it's not worth it. Should I sew my own from scratch or does this sound like a feasible plan?

First time dealing with EVA foam, and need help with some cutting it at an angle. I'm trying to cut the ends at a 45 degree angle so when I bring two peices together they come together evenly and make a 90 degree angle on the inside, basically making it a cube. My cutting is kinda choppy and rough though.

>> No.10274897

>>10274888
When cuts come out choppy like that, it means the foam's dulled the blade. Happens really often because foam is abrasive, keep spares or a sharpener on hand.

>> No.10275128

>>10274887
It’s possible. But how good it’s going to look all depends on if that fabric really matches, also make sure the costume isn’t going to look badly or cheaply made. Another thing you could do is find a similar maid dress with a excess fabric you could cut out of it and use (a longer skirt or sleeve)

>> No.10275139

>>10274888
There's some specific tools for perfect 45° cuts, but most people use a box cutter and do it manually.

A sharper blade will make a cleaner cut. Same thing goes for the foam: the higher the foam quality is the better the cuts will look.

Don't worry about it being rough, though. If the angle is decent it'll glue well. Contact cement is incredible. If that's not enough for your taste you can always send it until it's smooth/reaches your preferred angle.

So I've never done a cosplay in military attire before but I want to do Mads' character from death stranding. I was wondering if there was any good place to buy this kind of stuff for cheap since it all seems fairly pricey on amazon.

Are you doing this because you already own that dress? Because your plan is way more complicated than making this dress from scratch and I doubt altering that dress will look good. I made this costume before and it’s super easy to draft the pattern (just a basic bodice and pleated skirt smashed together) and sew it. I even used the broadcloth from Joann that you linked. Imo your options should just be to make the whole thing from scratch or to buy a premade TMM maid dress from Taobao/Ali.

>>10275617
No, I don't own it already. When I hatched this plan, I was feeling burnt out from my last project and trying to take some shortcuts.Thank you for sharing your opinion. I think you and the other anon are right, it'll probably look better and be easier if I just start from scratch. I'm glad that I at least made a good fabric choice!

Also, you have good taste.

I just started sewing but I really want to make Lelouch's Zero outfit but I honestly have no clue how the fuck to make/find patterns for something this complex. I tried using ye olde Google but all I can find is instructions for the mask which I don't really need help with. Any advice on how to make/find/modify/whatever patterns to make this outfit? Should I put this outfit on hold until I get a bit better at sewing?

>>10276359
It looks to me like a medium to advanced project, I don't know what your previous work looks like but if you decide to take this on, a good way to figure out the design is to break it down on paper. Doesn't matter how bad you are at drawing, you can find a base male silhouette and draw over that if you need. Start from the outermost piece, here that would be the cloak, and then go down drawing each piece with the general shapes and how they fit (ie the torso portion of the coat is close to the body, the bottom of the sleeves is flared.) Once you have an idea of the final shape for each piece, you can start looking for patterns that are similar. You'll probably have to alter them, so the things you want to note here are that it's easy to alter sleeve shapes and the shape of loose-fitting parts (like the bottom of the coat), it's harder to alter close-fitting parts and collars, so these are the parts of the pattern you want to find a close match to. Also, buy the gloves, they're a pain to make. And make mock-ups, it's especially important for things that have to fit well like a coat or pants. Use a fabric that's similar in weight and stiffness to your final fabric, old curtains from goodwill might fit the bill here.

There are a bunch of cheaper options online that you can edit with some minor sewing. This one just needs a bit more substance to the gold lines and maybe some insert to stiffen up the collar. You could probably save yourself alot of time and still get an excellent cosplay. That's what I did with my orochimaru years ago, mixed and matched different premade and got some excellent results.

The three main tenants of wig styling are: 1) youtube tutorials 2) got2b freeze spray and gel 3) thinning scissors.
Youtube is a such a valuable resource in this field because the visuals are sooo helpful. Thankfully everyone and their mama has made a video on what you need (and they're not all cosplay related either! Drag queens and black women are hallmarks of this type of content, don't be afraid to use resources outside of cosplay). There's whole playlists of wig tutorials so here's some of the necessary basics:
>Where to buy: https://youtu.be/lYzFhe4qR60
>How to where em: https://youtu.be/LWm5xyyl-3Q
>How to buy and stlye them: https://youtu.be/LWm5xyyl-3Q
>How to cut bangs: https://youtu.be/P3D47h6m-wk
>How to cut at all: https://youtu.be/pvqA7RIR7tU

With the wig you need, you probably won't need to do anything but a little defining with gel, hairspray, and or very light teasing. Imo it'd probably look better if you didn't recreate the stray hairs because they won't translate well in real life. You can part the bangs though. Either way, I hope these resources help. I can help you find a wig if need be.

Sure thing. Here's two different wigs to chose from.
1) Helios in Princess Dark Pink Mix from EpicCosplay for $24.50. I think the cut of this one would be useful for the style you're going for since it has that choppiness to it already. It should only need a trim in the back and the bangs to be complete. Imo, I think this would be your best option.
https://www.epiccosplay.com/collections/medium-wigs/products/helios-princess-dark-pink-mix-cosplay-wig
2) Inigo in Princess Pink or Light Pink from Arda-Wigs for $30. You should straighten the hair and trim off the excess with this one.
https://arda-wigs.com/collections/classic-medium-wigs/products/inigo-classic?variant=1975400005644

And a free tip for ya: It can be hard to tell what a wig's color will truly look like in broad daylight when it's not in the shop owner's fancily lit studio like the item photos are. So, if you're unsure if a color may be right for your character, go to google images and type "[wig brand] [wig color]" (ie. Arda Princess Pink) and take a look at the photos from cosplayers in different lighting. You'll be able to get a better picture of what the color looks like and photographs like.

I hope this helps.

Hello there fellow cosplayers,

I have something that has been bothering me for a while now. For the past couple of months I've been working on some costumes, and they look pretty decent if I say so myself... But then there's just one problem, and the problem is my face. I've been trying to smile or look serious in pictures, but everything just looks super derpy to me.

Does anyone have any tips or good tutorials on how to actually pose your face for pictures/in general? I'm proud of my work, but feel ashamed to wear some things because I think my face is silly... I've changed out of costumes just before conventions because I feel insecure over how I look.

You're going to do a lite version of spiking hair, but focusing on creating those piecey tips rather than building volume. Get a shit ton of clips and or separate the strands of hair between pins starting at either the cowlick or bangs. Lightly tease the underbelly of the strand of hair, spray, dry, smooth the top, twist and pinch the ends with a bit of tacky glue or got2b glued on your fingertips (less than a pea size). Let dry, then trim away the ends to create the pointed tips. For the spread out/flayed ends like the bangs, use your scissors in vertical orientation to thin out of the hair in a naturally looking way and then repeat with the steps listed above, but instead of twisting the ends, flatten them very gently between your fingers, trim if needed, and let dry. You don't want paper thin ends, so try to give them just a little bit of bulk.

I actually made an elphelt gun before, haha. Overall I'd say the quality is nice, but what'd I'd focus on is the paint - more coats would give it a more solid finish. I would also definitely add a primer if you haven't in the previous gun. If you're worried about possible paint lines from the brush, I found using a makeup brush leaves it smoother.
For the ridges, you're either going to have to cut the handle piece thicker and dremel the shape, or dremel smaller pieces and glue them on. I find the 2nd easier but whatever works best for you. Could I get the 3d ref you're using if you got it for future use?

So I think my post is best formatted as a three-parter.

Part 1: Is this coat too "Nazi"ish? I believe it is German from WWII, possibly Russian, but it appears not to be military, but rather civilian. But even though it may not be authentic military, I don't want to look too Nazi.

Part 2: Assuming I am basing the cosplay around the coat, what are some good places (online or walk-in) to pick up original and/or reproduction WWII clothing and accessories that look the part for a civilian on the Eastern front/Russia?

Part 3: Where can I find infographs or reference images of people, real or fictional, in civilian clothing from Russia other Eastern nations of the 1940's? I have watched several WWII movies and such and "Stalingrad" from 1993 is one that I think would fit my coat well.

Thanks for reading and replies.

2. Unless you live in an area where those are, the internet if the best. I have seen a ton of Russian stuff on eBay but not necessarily that time period.

3. Museums collect it, if you are lucky they have put some online but in person is best. It will be harder to find as a lot of stuff will be war focused but photography existed and was used by the public although the rich has more chances for it.

I believe it'd be important to know that during the war there was a massive donation drive whereby civilians would donate their winter clothing to the Wehrmacht to augment their supplies, so even if that jacket isn't a military issue, you may still find archive photographs of German soldiers wearing similar civilian coats, and it would be a fair assumption that partisans would have used them too, as they did all equipment they could capture.

I've been having a go at Naked Snake from MGS3 for my first official cosplay. I'm doing Olive Drab so it won't look like the camo in Pic Related.

So far I have:
The top
The pants
The Stabo Harness
The boots

I still need:
The Bandana
The radio/earplug
a fake beard (I don't grow facial hair)
fake survival knife and sheath
radio pouch
Compression shirt
Fingerless gloves
Gun holster
The canteen/ammo pack/butt pack combo
Knee sleeve
shin knife/sheath

I still have a way to go but I need direction specifically on the compression shirt and beard. The compression shirt has a glossy sort of look to it that I want to mimic and don't want a cheap shirt to ruin that.
Also, I don't grow facial hair and finding a good one has proven impossible. I don't know what to do.

You are correct that it looks cakey. The makeup that you posted >>10280313 here looks like the right kind of coverage. Your skin is clear, so there isn't much to obscure, but a light layer is always a good idea for pictures. In the full suit picture, your face looks very monotone. I'd suggest adding some (very light) blush to your cheekbones, only in the highest area closest to your temple and some angled bronzer. Nothing with shimmer, just matte bronzer. You could use it on the sides of your nose, under your jaw, and on your temples. It'll help create dimension in your face, just make sure to really buff it out so it doesn't look like streaks of shit on your face. Remember, apply light in layers, not all at once. It's easier to add than it is to take away. As for the freckles, imo it's better for them not to be seen a mile away. You don't see Deku's from that far either and even if you do, that's anime logic my dude. Again, imo I would follow >>10280320's suggestion to mimic the shape of Deku's freckles or at least localize the freckles in that area so that it gives the impression of the original. The freckles you did in the first picture 1) are clumpy 2) are too close to your eyes 3) too dark for a realistic look and not dark enough for the anime look. Either choose light brown or black.

Make your own. Glue or ventilate wefts of hair onto lace and spirit gum it to your face in your desired shape. I'm sure there's tutorials for it online.

I'd suggest following similar steps to Kamui's leg armor tutorial: https://youtu.be/NovgPB4UAXU?t=117 mixed with tutorials for Deku from My Hero Academia. He has a "shooter style" outfit that features very similar thigh/leg armor. As for the feet... you'll first have to figure out how to stand on level ground and then start drafting I suppose.

So, in short:
>black stretch fabric boot covers
>pattern armor pieces on top
>add googly eye rivets
>use cardboard boxes and any other materials to create feet, making sure to craft them around the pair of shoes you will be using as a base and with the level supports in mind
>duct tape pattern shapes based off of that
>recreate using foam
>3D print, foam clay, or cast the spikey thingies
>success???

It's all in the quality of the product and sealant. Start with a clean and dry work surface, especially in a high sweat zone like one' s palm. Baby powder the surface if need be, then apply glue underneath and on top of your sfx scar and seal heavily - let dry - repeat 2x-3x. Remember that even movie-level sfx have to do touchups throughout shoots so don't expect it to stay perfect for 8hrs regardless of how expensive your products are. Carry a touch up kit with you. A fingerless glove might be a good idea. It's worth a test run.

Question about prop making. I followed this tutorial to make a Gambol Shroud prop, and it came out really really nicely. I'm super happy with it, but I just came up with this idea that I think would make it even better.

In the show, it's able to transform from blade to gun automatically. I can do it with my prop, but it takes a while to manually move the pieces. I was thinking that maybe I could use motors/servos to automate the process.

My plan-I can put an arduino inside the handle to control all the electronics. The blade folds in half when it goes into gun mode, this could probably be done with a single servo. The bottom half of the blade ROTATES and MOVES back and forth on the handle, which is where I'm having issues. I can solve the moving problem if I replace the free standing spool that's currently there with a motor, and put gear tracks on the blade. So the motor can ride the length of the blade to move it back and forth. However, I don't think this would rotate the blade. Rotation would be really easy with a servo, but I cant possibly think of how I can combine those two.

Any ideas on how I could do that? Is it too much work/not worth it?

Figure out what you prefer, and start off with the smallest part. I'd reccomend the mask. You can wear a mask on its own to a lesser effect if you don't finish the entire costume before a con.

Yeah, I'd say the circle skirt pattern would be a good idea. Unless you find a crafty way to add the tube part when you cut the folded fabric, just add the cowl neck as if it were a very tall waistband. How much fabric you'll need to get that thick drape is entirely up to the fabric you choose so experiment with it before cutting. Using old bedsheets is a good source of cheap mockup fabric and in a situation like this, it would be ideal to experiment a lot before too little or too much of the fabric you'll need.

How would I go about this as a wig? I think Jade from Arda would a good candidate for color, but I am unsure how I would style it. Would I braid a weft and sew it on for the length?

You should get a long wig and cut it. Start by making the braid, then shorten strands to match your reference, and feather them out for a natural look. I recommend watching a few tutorials, and maybe getting something cheaper than Arda to practice on.

Search "basic cosplay makeup". To give you the short and skinny, it's all in the formula of your makeup (i.e. longwear foundation, waterproof mascara), primer (especially for eye shadow) and sealant (ie. setting powder AND spray). If you really want to know which products to use, I'd suggest looking at what brands are available in your store of choice and then checking the reviews to see if they live up to their expectations. I personally use Revlon's longwear foundation, Maybelline FitMe powder, then NYX's setting spray.

If you want smooth paint you either need to get really good with the brush or use an airbrush. The primer does affect the texture, yes, but the streaks are 100% the brush's fault.

Plasti dip is a really nice primer. Easy to use and doesn't crack but it does leave a bit of texture. You'll never get a 100% smooth surface using plasti dip but (except for from a chromed look) it's good enough for most things.
Black or white is purely personal preference, although I like black more.

I'm not sure if this belongs more in the sewing thread or not but given zero experience with sewing, at what point would it be best to try to make a cos myself vs. just buying one off aliexpress or commissioning someone?

There are a lot of factors that play into your decision to make or buy such as skill, and money, but from experience the factor that has affected my sewing experience the most is time. This one is by far the most important, especially if you're a beginner. For my first ever sewing project, I chose an outfit with only two components: a strapless fitted dress and some arm ruffles. It should have been simple given that I had 9 months to complete it, but I spent valuable time before the convention rushing it which ruined my convention experience and produced a shitty quality costume. So what happened? I gave myself enough time to complete the costume sure, but not enough to learn the techniques beforehand and practice them until they were decent enough to feature in my costume. I was a lot like Grommit in that gif.
If I were tackling the black mage, I would give myself 1.5-2 years. There are a lot of techniques and components of the costume that are not beginner friendly, so I'd advise against it for your first project. It's not impossible, especially in a shorter time frame, but if you want something that actually looks half decent with beginner's skill then I would absolutely suggest waiting until you have enough time to complete it or buying it. Although 1.5-2 years or even 9 months from my previous example seems like a lot of time, it's not like I was working on it every day or sometimes even every week. I had work, school, holidays, family/social obligations that eat up so much of that allotted time. There were so many times that I became frustrated with my inability to make a technique work or ensure that the damn thing fit and the looming deadline just amplified that worry until I burnt out several times over the course of that project. Don't be like me and have a good experience by choosing a project that is actually within your wheelhouse (or just above it) and give yourself more time than you think you need to do it.

>Worst case even if the pre-made one turns out less than ideal it is much easier to make small alterations or additions than it would be to make the entire robe from scratch.
You're absolutely right, good mindset. Working in small chunks is a great idea to build up skill. Like the hat or pants are good projects to start with. Even altering a non-cosplay purchased robe and adding on the other details is a good skill to practice. Just be patient with yourself, adjust your expectations to fit with a beginner's perspective, and research research research.

Also, you will never be too old. There will always be a character for you. That saying should only be applicable to older people who want to creep into teen's spaces. Cosplay is fit for everyone. And don't wait until you have enough skill to begin either. Just get started whether on this project or a side project. Even the greats have their shitty costumes to look back on. Just be proud of your humble beginnings and continue to strive for greatness as you gradually improve.

Best of luck, anon.

Could someone explain nail polish to me?

Normal nail polish doesn’t shrink.
If you want nail polish for the weekend just go get any cheap bottle, apply one coat, wait 5-15 mins, put on another coat. If you’re planning on using your hands a lot, get a top coat and put that on your nails after they dry.
Real gel dries with a UV light, they have pseudo gel nail polishes that are thicker than normal nail polish but take longer to dry. You can also just get fake nails, paint those, stick them on and off.
If you want nails that will last you 2 weeks then go get a manicure done, costs like $20-30 depending on where you live and shouldn’t chip. To get those removed you have to go back to a nail salon or use 100% acetone.

Although tailoring garments to make them smaller isn't super hard. The green ribbed undershirt will probably be made of a stretch knit so it will fit a wider range of sizes, and the white overshirt doesn't close in the front so you also have more leeway there, you can probably tackle those a bit earlier. Magnets. There's tons of them on the market, you could probably just build the tassel off of a pre-purchased base. As for the beads, if you can't already find them, just use model magic or something extremely light

The texture can be minimized a lot with proper care. I recommend not spraying on days when it's humid or raining, make sure where you're working is not too hot or too cold and well-ventilated, if you're working outdoors make sure it's not breezy, heating your can (put it in hot water, not boiling, just get some hot water out of your tap and let it sit in the water for 5 minutes or so), shake it just before you spray for at least a minute, if you've used the can before make sure to clear the nozzle by turning it upside down and spraying a bit (always wipe it off before putting it away), spray it right, use lots of thin layers, not thick gloppy ones (I always do at least 3, first layer is always extra thin, wait 30 minutes between coats), keep your distance right and consistent, don't get too close or too far away (like 6-10 inches I think is official recommendation), and use overlapping sweeping strokes like you would with any spray paint.

Also, you can just get the old Plastidip that's meant for dipping tool handles into (aka the original use for the stuff) and brush it on if you really don't like the spray but want to use Plastidip.

After a few days you will get over being hungry and having cravings, but you will feel sick and dizzy. Please don't do this.

What I have found works for me is the 8-16 "diet". You could probably make it work with 6-18.

Pretty much you only eat during a 6-8 window and fast during the remaining 16-18. This is called intermittent fasting. It's not starving yourself, since (if you sleep 8 hours) you are not eating during those 8 hours. This "diet" just extends those hours to a few before you go to sleep and a few after you wake up.

I prefer to only eat from the hours I wake up til the early afternoon as I found that eating towards the evening causes me to bloat up the next day. So I work from 8am - 5pm, and I eat from 8am - 2pm (breakfast and lunch only).

I have been at a sustainable weight (I used to be 160+, now I'm ~120 and have been able to gain muscle and maintain this weight). I don't have cravings at night. The hardest part about starting this was the first week.

I also drink a lot of water (at least 12 cups) each day.

Plastidip is not as easy as videos make it out to be. If you have never Plastidipped before (I mean the spray, not the dipping solution), it is a lot like spray painting, but with significantly more texture. Plastidip does not come out smooth at all if you are a first time user. It also peels off whatever you are coating, so you can't sand the texture off like you can with modpodge.

The amount of time spent on practice followed by purchasing quality materials to make the cosplay yourself will be significantly more expensive than purchasing it and altering it yourself. You would be fucked if the outfit you received was shorter as there would not be much room for adjustment versus it being bigger.

Does anyone know of a European store (as in, ships from within Europe) that sells wig wefts? I've only been able to find stores that sell entire wigs.
My country has recently changed the law so every international order no matter how small can technically have a 15+€ processing fee slapped on top of it, and maybe even customs additionally if you're unlucky. I really don't want to pay that kind of money for an order of one or two packs of wefts.

Newfag to EVA and con crunched a scythe, primed it with modge podge and painted after a day of drying but the scythe started to curl so we put heavy books on it to try and flatten it, but it cracked the scythe blades a bunch. Wondering if there's any quick fix I could do? Or if heat bending would melt it because I used modge podge and red spraypaint from home depot.

Does anyone have any advice for getting, huge, voluminous curls with a wig?

My attempts with rollers + boiling water, rollers + steamer, and just using a plain curling iron are leaving me with waves more than the curls I'm looking for, and I'm not too experienced with wigs so I'm not really sure what to try next. I'm working with a Arda Venus + a pack of wefts so I'm not lacking in volume. Teasing the inside layer is working well but it's still not giving me the look I want because of the waves vs curls. It is rather long which may be hurting my cause as well.

Did you heat the foam before priming? Foam is pretty porous; looks like it shrunk or something after you put on modge podge (causing the curling and eventually cracking of the primer). I would try priming it again and giving it another coat of paint.

maybe try letting the wig stay in the rollers for 24 hours or so after using the hot water? Same with the curling iron, it could be that you aren't holding the fibers in place long enough for them to cool all the way down and retain the shape of the curl.
>>10288550
There really isn't a 'quick fix' for this, but you can sand away the existing paint(use a respirator/mask!), prime it again, and then repaint. Plasti-Dip is a much better primer imo than Mod-Podge, it has more flexibility and will wrinkle rather than crack, which can then be fixed with a heat gun. That being said, a lot of home-depot spray paints will crack no matter what, like Rustoleum. In the future, make sure your eva pieces are completely heat formed, heat-sealed (run the heat gun over the foam kinda quick, you will see the foam changed color and get a little glossy) and use several coats of primer before introducing paint. If you're going to take this route and re-paint, I would also suggest using painter's tape to get cleaner lines on the silver parts of the blade, and using some weathering techniques to give it depth. Some very basic weathering techniques are in the tutorial below.

This is the core of foamsmithing. Maybe you'd be more into pepakura? I'm not too familiar with it but basically you start with a very thin plastic and then coat it with something more rigid, like resin. It might be more up your alley if working with 6mm foam feels too clunky. Although I really can't imagine that pauldron needing cuts as small or precise as you're implying...are you trying to shape all the little nicks and dents in the armor or something? Cause it would be a lot easier to just carve those out of the final piece once its all put together.

In anon’s defence, that’s a weapon and therefore isn’t supposed to be flexible in the first place. Modge podge is a perfectly acceptable primer for rigid objects. Though yes, it did crack in a way plastidip wouldn’t have.

Incoming bad question.

I'm trying to make a voice changer that I can use to flip through different pitches/tones. I don't need it to be feature rich or have tons of buttons. Even a single knob would be enough. Just something to hook up to the tiny speaker hidden on my shoulder and the tiny mic that fits in my mask. The concept itself is pretty darn simple, so it boggles my mind that NOBODY on the internet has done it, to my knowledge.

All the results I've found are either [A] people with devices that do one specific voice (e.g. darth vader) but never ones that you can shift around, or [B] ones you can shift around, but they're online voice changers for the computer to use at home on programs like skype or discord. Clearly neither of those options work. Phone apps are also obviously out of the question. It needs to be an analog input so I don't have to babysit a touch screen. I should be able to change the dial/switches/whatever without looking, and not be stuck wondering "why isn't it changing, did I hit the home button, did it just turn off, am I touching the wrong spot on the screen, did i accidentally click on some mandatory update that takes ten hours, aahhhhh".

Anyhow, I'm not begging for a step-by-step walkthrough or anything, I'm just trying to figure out if it's even possible, because I have found jack on the subject and folks like y'all are generally much smarter than I am with this stuff, and I'd rather not resort to strapping a guitar peddle to my face.
Alright. Thanks for reading.

I'd suggest trying out different substances to find what works best for you. I've seen people crumple up tin foil and iron it on, but it's used for giving a leather texture, not a raised texture. >>10291366 has a good idea, but you'll need to make sure to get superfine sand otherwise it'll clump. Is it at all possible to pull off obscenely muscular characters as a lanky dude with a twunkish build? I'm like a 5'11" 130 pound dude but a lot of my favorite characters are 7' unga bunga giga niggas. I could obviously gain some weight and muscle but I don't have the time or the patience to take up body building as a lifeling hobby just for cosplay which is what pic related would require. Should I just give up on my unga bunga cosplay dreams? Should I maybe try a character with more armor so I can pad it?

>> No.10293402

>>10292975
You could choose more armored designs or you could just try your best to build a realistic padding. Maybe use a latex overlay that you can airbrush and ventilate hair onto or something. The power is in your hands, my dude. You don't have to be screen accurate. Just have fun and work towards your goal as much as possible

>> No.10293539

>>10293402
This. Remember, you don't have to be a perfect 1:1 representation of the character to have fun with it or for people to enjoy seeing your cosplay. Obscenely muscular is kinda unrealistic anyway.

The general formula is: supplies + shipping + minimum wage / per hour. If it's your friend, then you should make an extra initiative to ensure that you are paying them fairly if not a bit over.

I doubt this is a great decision to get into the hobby, but I'm planning to do a Fire Force cosplay. I want to make the fire retardant uniform myself, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Someone recommended adjusting the template for a trenchcoat, which seems like the right way to tackle the patterns, but the materials are something I'm still kind of torn on.

Traditionally, "Bunker/turnout gear" is made of aramid fabrics (like kevlar) and padded with fire retardant foam. Does anybody have a good suggestion for an affordable fabric that looks and feels similar, but is like, cheap (wasn't planning on fighting actual fires) and some material to make it very bulky, like in the series?

There's a couple of different methods to approaching multicolor material, so I tried to create a (very ugly) visual guide. I hope it helps.

As for your, >>10294064, request for a pattern. Despite our progress as a community to make patterns more accessible for hard to construct costumes like the one you listed, you'll still need to either 1) look for a pattern made specifically for your character made by an independent creator 2) Frankenstein pieces of multiple patterns together to get your desired effect 3) start using a pattern as a base like, Simplicity 8235 for example, and then draft the missing pieces yourself. Best of luck.

> adjusting the template for a trenchcoat,
That is a good idea and you should go for it if you can't find any existing uniform patterns. There's a whole category for them, so ideally there should be something that you can use.

>Does anybody have a good suggestion for an affordable fabric that looks and feels similar, but is like, cheap (wasn't planning on fighting actual fires) and some material to make it very bulky, like in the series?
Check out the upholstery fabric section of your local store. They're easily $5+/per yard so I'm not sure if I'd call it affordable but it's miles cheaper than buying actual kevlar.

This is just my two cents, but it sounds like you're just getting into the hobby and may need to hear it: being as accurate as possible to what real firefighters would wear is not going to make your costume better. Cosplay is a grand illusion. You want your costume to look the best and often times that means interpreting costume making differently than the source material so that it translates better to real life. Look at that makeup trend where women overdraw their eyes and then fill in the space with opaque white shadow to look like an exaggerated anime eye. It never looks good because cosplay isn't a 1:1 translation. Being historically accurate, or using lavish materials sometimes can be better and fun, but don't think that you HAVE to do it to be a good cosplayer.

>> No.10295542

>>10295424
Also, just because no one's mentioned it so far, always make a mockup with cheap fabric before cutting into your nicer stuff, especially if you go for some really expensive material.

>> No.10295661

>>10295513
Thanks for the advice! I understand it's far more important for it to look good than be close to the source material. I'll also make sure to make a mockup. I wouldn't dare to use anything expensive since I haven't touched a sewing machine in over 5 years.

If you design the fabric, you could get it printed at Spoonflower. There's plenty of tutorials on youtube. You might as well add the graphics on while you're doing it.

If that's not something in your wheelhouse, use iron on transfer paper or Wonder Under on fabric that you can hand cut the designs on.

I think this is a bit off-topic for the thread but I couldn't think of another thread to post it in:

It's been a while since I've been on /cgl/ but last time I was here there were some threads for people who cosplay characters from the battlefield series, Rainbow 6, Metal Gear Solid and other shooter type games. Whatever happened to them? Did they move to a different board or was there not enough interest here to keep it going? I've been thinking about trying one (haven't decided who or what series though) and those threads would help, plus I always loved looking at everyone's setups
