Me too Anon, my friends I made from my Homestuck days are still really close and we're in our mid-late 20's now. The young kinds in the fandom were always little streaky monsters who never bothered to pay an extra $10-20 for better makeup or sealant. Now none of my friends ever mention we were in the fandom, even the association is not great.
Agreed about CR, TAZ and Voltron, very loud fandoms and rarely any good/recognizable cosplays. I can only recognize them by the colour schemes or use of giant witch hats.

I am/have been a part of both the real life brony and Homestuck communities.
Personally, I think both fandoms are pretty good, but they are also very different.

In real life, I find that bronies are the more normal people, they are pretty much normies that watch MLP and are a bit nerdy. Their humor isn't great, and they can't handle criticism of the show.
I find the real life Homestuck community to be better than the brony community. Homestuck fans are friendlier, more including, but probably less socially mainstream than bronies. They are less normie. Homestuck fans are also funnier, and are more open to discuss the good and bad sides of their story of choice.
As an example of how I get better along with Homestuck fans than bronies, I have never hung out with bronies outside of brony events, while I've spent time with multiple Homestuck fans outside of Homestuck events. Bronies are simply too normie and don't accept me.

If you look beyond just local social communities, bronies are probably the better fandom. It has more music, and a huge infrastructure for dedicated conventions which Homestuck doesn't have.
However, Homestuck seems to be more cosplay oriented than bronies, so in terms of being a "cosplay fandom", Homestuck probably succeeds more.

I would get into im@s but I can’t read moonrunes so it’s much harder to connect with the girls when you can’t get a grip on the personalities through the game. I really like the designs of the million live and shiny girls but they don’t have an anime (I think?).

Also, the choreography is lacking for a lot of im@s dances. It’s more traditional idol-style, but it’s not super interesting to watch.

Man, me and a friend got a room with randoms at a con and 3 of them were Black Butler cosplayers. 2 women, 1 guy and the guy was an utter psychopath. It was crazy because one of the women just got absolutely trampled on by the other two, she never got to make a decision the whole weekend and at one point when she was having fun with us playing some shitty CAH ripoff, the guy stormed into the room and told her it was time for bed a basically forced her away from the group of us who were playing. The guy at one point in the weekend was livestreaming to his 'fans' and got pissed at me and my friend for walking through the kitchen/living room space to get to the other connect room to hang out with other people in the hotel.

Long story short, facebook explosions happened and it turned out that the 2 that were walking all over that poor girl were called out for forcing her to be bi, dye and cut her hair, and a bunch of other crazy shit.

Virtually all 2hu cosplayers I've met are fine and have some sense of self awareness, or about the same there of other con goers, but the ones who just don't cosplay and are fans are the worst.

I think people who decide to just mash fandoms together and cosplay as their original, or found online art, idea. Like Harry Potter is mixed with fucking everything but also people who put western characters in kimono for no discernable reason. Last con I was at I saw a lot of BNHA/HP cosplayers including a gender bent, Ravenclaw Izuku and it was all Hot topic crap with a bad green wig. I only realized it was Izuku because of the diamond pattern freckles.

I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand AU and original takes on character costumes have given us Hannah Alexander works, historically accurate Disney princesses, and Gala / Ball Gown / Fancy designs for characters that are brimming with craftsmanship and/or creativity. And on the otherhand I've seen too fucking many """rave!"""" genderbent Todorokis, Dekus, and Bakugos. The type that grinds my gears the most are Stormtrooper Disney Princesses. That shit don't even make sense for the character. If you want to do an armor build, find a better character for fucks sake. At least Harry Potter x MHA considers the personality of the characters and takes place in a similar high school like setting. The cosplays are still simple, but I hate it less than nonsensical mashups. And above all casual clothes cosplays peeve me the most. A wig and some makeup does not a cosplay make.

In fairness you can judge a Homestuck cosplaying fan's autism by the proportion of the laziness or hardwork put into their costume. I've met lots of chill Homestuck cosplayers like this, especially fans of the Ancestors and Beforus trolls and Derse/Prospit fashion geeks.

Those that do effortfag and make elaborate outfits/cosplays tend to be more well adjusted and under control. The bandwagoners that just throw in a t-shirt, horns and skindye then call it a day to scream at conventions are the cancerous ones.
