But I will say this again, all this stuff is INVISIBLE to the members showing up to the convention. There are maybe 100 or so voting members, with maybe a couple dozen attending the meetings. On the other hand, there are about 850 staffers who show up, and do a heck of a job putting on a show. They don't care about the politics, they just do it.

Pretty fucked up that Otakon cut out food vouchers for their staff. On the rare moments of downtime they get they do talk about how the con has gone down over the years and how a some of the oldhead senior staff don't really want to deviate from their course to bring new life to the con. The one hard pill Otakon needs to swallow is that they're no longer the top con anymore with other cons popping up all over the US now. A. Work up through the gopher system

Back when I was growing up in the Maryland hinterlands, there were the Fantek conventions: EveCon in December and CastleCon sometime in the summer. For most of their lives they were in Crystal City.

Why do I bring them up? Because their paradigm was that the attendees would be teenagers who either drove in for the day or took Metro; they had a relatively small number who actually got rooms.

No, the only way to grow the convention is to target, advertise, and yes, pander to, Northern Virginia. Forget Metro ads at the expensive transfer stations, saturate the Silver Line.

Otakon got a raw deal this year with the Yellow line being closed below Reagan National; that hurt growth.

Basically, its measured in "room nights" (how many rooms x how many nights) and the TL:DR is the bigger the room block, the more hotels are willing to work with you. Some hotels even throw in free function space with X number of room nights (or vice versa for stuff like weddings).

Back in Baltimore, Otakon had such massive room blocks, the hotels bent over backwards to help out Otakon.

NOT filling the promised room block comes with...penalties.
