10194989 No.10194989 [Reply] [Original]

Posts on the official group agree it was worse than last year. IA cancelled, the amount of people there Friday made Matsuri look like Anime CTX, and Hfest is worse than ever now. John is finally getting his just desserts.

AAnon here. After a Good Friday like I mentioned before, both Saturday and Sunday were fucking awful. Us and everyone around us and everyone I talked to had a worse Saturday and even worse Sunday, and one saying they had a 40% decrease in sales compared to last year. The general idea was that there was just too many AA booths for the low attendance that was there, it was too spread out, and the more expensive tickets didn’t help any. It seems John is trying to treat the con like Anime Expo, when he’s barely getting 1/5 that in attendance. Many of the people I talked to were iffy on even trying to come back next year and if it wasn’t local for us we definitely wouldn’t. The drama from all the shit going wrong was like dessert for us though so at least we had that

it was a mess. it was announced on the website that thurs was going to be 12 to 7. get there at 10 to get my pass and see if i see some people i know.
huge crowd. tons of people in cosplay. 12 rolls around and nothing is open. go upstairs and see the vendors barely setting up. walk around meet some people. outside there are tons of food trucks and seesaws in the front of the con. 1, then 2 roll around and nothing. i can't believe i stayed till 4 and they opened the game area (all dark). afterwards many people started leaving.

the days that followed were okay. not that many people. i did see a regular 'celeste'. good god that catwoman spandex and the following day 'sucker punch blonde'. hopefully her pics will appear.

but yeah. no hype for the suppose 13th year of con and 65 aniv of godzilla. not to mention the popstars.

I was helping my friend in the artist alley and we did alright, probably because we're local. The booth next to us said they were $4k in the hole for this one, so yeah. Friday was busy, other two days were dead. I went to a few panels and events, like 50% were cancelled or under/poorly staffed. The best parts of the con for me were sitting in this one guys Skyline, hijacking a panel to irl shitpost, and selling pills. If I came as a guest it would be a total waste of money. Real shit show. I'm only coming back to help my friend run the booth, if they decide to even come back. So yeah, exactly what >>10195254 said.

Found out that Greater Austin Comic Con and Celebrity Fan Fest in San Antonio was happening the same weekend, Austin had better English VA guests (main cast of My Hero Academia VAs) along with the usual power rangers and CFF had A-list Hollywood Marvel/DC actors. It splits the potential attendance even more before the boycott & Vic thing... fans that only went for a certain guest were complaining about the lack of organization from staff members and volunteers too. I didn't find it, someone on twitter did. An anime industry guy chimed in and it showed up in his thread somewhere. I tried to archive the calendar listing, but GRB is dumb and uses sessions (which makes it unarchivable? I wasn't going to figure it out) & they deleted the listing since the event is over https://www.grbhouston.com/attendees/events-calendar/

https://twitter.com/MichaelToole/status/1140265103142596613

They've been lying on attendance, especially last year, because they made up a turnstile number of 180k with a warm body count of 40k. 40k * 3 = 120k... thus Anime Matsuri padded their numbers with 60k imaginary people (their staff looks minimal at best, they probably have like 200 staff max + vendors/artists + guests, which does not equal 60k people)

It seems like AM staff are deleting attendee feedback/criticism posts. It seems super weird that they don't have a feedback form set up like many other big anime cons of that supposed "attendance" size who have their shit together. This is just one of the many feedback comments in the group.

There are major issues with con involving lack of communication starting from the con chair, which trickles down to the volunteers unable to help an attendee. It is really strange that the con chair models in the fashion show on the biggest day of the con despite the hours that it takes up. I haven't heard of any other con chair even doing something like that since they are overwhelmed by the duties of their position and committed to doing their job properly. In addition, attendees cannot always listen in for a Leigh livestream and important information announced then is not always on the AM website in written format for people who don't have an hour of time to watch it, such as when they cancel a guest. It is also very bad that they cannot spend money to hire a decent translator for their important panels over the weekend with their Japanese and Korean guests and instead have incompetent ones who do not interpret properly, which could be a PR disaster for any interview. It's also weird that there wasn't any news coverage from local tv stations or newspapers; have they burned bridges there too for being unprofessional? They keep promising stuff and not following up on it. I'm sure a majority of their staff are underpaid or volunteer, but they seem to be really disorganized and passion & working hard does not mean the same as working smart and managing to run events on schedule instead of an hour late every year. It is extremely disappointing to hear that a majority of things went wrong AGAIN every single year. The con looks pretty empty/not packed in most videos outside of the Vic related activities.

it's really surprising how her life went sideways after she got involved with AM. I thought her lolita events in Mexico were well-organized from an outsider perspective. Also most anime con fashion shows have like 1 hour of rehearsal max on the day of the fashion show. They don't need to be preparing for the show months in advance as that's wasting a lot of people's time. She went downhill alright. She really thinks that she’s still Kawaii Ambassador of Mexico although Misato already made her to step down a while back after settling in with AM and gave it to the current Ambassador. Just hope she’s not giving them money because that means they are taking advantage from staff’s credits and also sending them under the gutter.

Apparently the staff is posting their “experiences” on the group page, which in my opinion is just more spam than more feedback of what’s about to happen for 2020.

Fyi for anyone wondering why the sound was pretty terrible at AM this year for the concerts and main events, the company that they contracted for 2018 (D/B/A T&S SOUND PRODUCTION) had to sue them to get the $30k owed to them so I'm guessing the bad word spread around sound companies that the Leighs broke contract on payment - the lawsuit is available on the Harris County Court records site if you search for "Anime Matsuri" under defendant.

In my opinion, Daniela is brainwashed by all the promises that her bosses is promising they will happen, but look at all the stuff they ended up making this year. Quality on the stores looks less real to be in than how the stores look last year. If you saw the Evangelion Store and Sailor Moon Store last year, you did saw the difference of production made. The walls were made of the display fabrics instead of a legit wall. Through all this time, she didn’t question one bit why they didn’t use a wall to make the store look more real. I would of pushed them to actually waste their money to make the stores look more realistic to the actual stores in Japan. If the others that works for them didn’t questioned that too to build the cafes and AM Booth/Fashion Square, I don’t know what’s going on in their brains.

That was a let down for me to watch all that quality go to waste from last year.

>> No.10205378

>>10205228
Yeah I agree quality has definitely dropped. For the past two years they haven’t had the japanese arcade machines and each year there are even less vendors. It was so bad this year that they had to fill up the empty space with an air conditioning filter vendor.

You're incredibly right. John was always a con man and a sex pest, but even if you throw that aside post-2015, he really did let his goal of beating AX go to his head wayyyyyy too fast. Even before I learned of the allegations two years too late (2017), I attended during 2014 and 2015, and it was staggering to watch the con fall from there the following two years. Honestly, if it runs in 2020, that might be the last time it runs period, unless the city buys it up. But who knows, honestly; John has so many ties to city council so attendance might not even matter.

As someone who was working with AM, after the whole fiasco with HLC they started doing their volunteer forms to hide shit. No one is allowed to say anything negative, and because people want free shit, of course they're too stupid to read the fine print. I gave up when the contract started reading that no one who had volunteered in the last x months at a con can volunteer for AM. So they placed a non compete clause so to speak. Which is stupid because it's volunteer work, not a company you're working that pays you. Establishments don't have that kind of authority.

As for Meta, the last I heard was they were monopolized in Texas. They're not allowed to work with anyone because of the contract they have with AM. I'm assuming it still hasn't ended so Meta is trying to make do with what they can.
