This JetJ dress isn't something I'm willing to try and make my own version of, precisely because if you mess up you _will_ look like a cheap messy pile of rags like this. But it's not, though. What little I can see of the bodice, it's an ill-fitting mess (and looks nothing like the inspo dress to boot--both reasons, I'm sure, necessitate the bolero), and even on a fatty-chan with a deflated petticoat, if the skirt were even it would hang with some amount of symmetry. She needs more practice. This is a very difficult style of dress to replicate correctly, even for an average-sized gull.

Lolita, compared to other fashions, is surprisingly easy to wear since everything is so matchy matchy and comes in sets. There are certainly pieces or styles that are harder to wear than others, but some of these bitches look terrible even while wearing all black or just pink/white solids.

Is it because some of these women don't bother wearing other well-thought-out outfits besides lolita? Most lolitas, with the exception of a few lifestyle types, wear cheap, fast fashion in shitty ultra casual styles normally ’le comfy’ and only dress in frills 1-2 times per month at best. That result is what you are seeing, I think. Part of the fashion is wearing it. Another part is collecting items and putting them together. You can wear your closet of 5 dresses similar ways for 10 years and never really grow.

Part of it may also have to do with how serious you are about the fashion and how important it is in your life.

You can literally wear sweats and hoodies all day, most days, but you're still very passionate about the fashion, collecting items, and organizing and attending meets and events, but you can't be bothered to wear it most days.

Another part we don't really talk about is the community. Some people just show up to a few meets, but it's not very important to them. It's one interest out of many. For others, the community is a large part of their lives and brings a great deal of inspiration. If I'd stuck around with just local meets, I probably wouldn't have grown as much. It's been through attending events, meeting others from different comms, travelling, making friends through this fashion that I've found the most growth and inspiration. It's a far greater impact than just looking at pictures.

Honestly, I go to a lot of conventions, mostly for vending and staffing purposes. Then I go for fun as well. It's just something I've enjoyed doing for nearly 20 years and don't see myself quitting. A lot of my good friends who are in the fashion are fellow vendors. We'll make plans to twin at the next show too, and try to request our booths beside eachother.

A few others I've known online through other fandoms and interests predating our entry into the fashion. It just so happened that we're both into all the same stuff and we live close enough to each other that we'll be at some of the same events.

It's probably hard to plan to attend events when you're doing these things alone. But at least with conventions, there's things that other friends may be interested in as well. I don't know, I'm an introvert and sort of a hermit who works at home, but I find it very easy to make connections and friendships this way. Much easier than say making friends at a typical workplace or some "normie" / mundane social function.

I wear athleisure and graphic tees on a daily basis for comfort reasons, not really to dress up and look nice. I'm not spending an hour picking out an outfit to go pick up a few groceries and grab some household goods. I stopped wearing trendy/fast fashion because it goes out of style before I have the chance to wear it and when I do, it falls apart after a few washes. Sweats, track pants, hoodies and t-shirts tend to hold up longer.

Lolita is another story. I'll nitpick and carefully plan a coordinate and wear pieces for years in multiple ways, always buying or making new things to coordinate with them. If I dress nicely, I'm wearing lolita or a lolita piece dressed down (some all over simple prints are good for this, especially more recent chiffon ones)
