/cgl/ Idol Spreadsheet (Recently updated, under new management!) - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WtgRe5cjKIR0BYGhw9N8ahxChLqEFLbZIRbAazooh-o/edit?usp=sharing

Original Music Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfmgukQM2isUtJJZz1MY4Jn4zPcbl0wDU

Previously:
-Lip syncing vs. performing live?
-Mimi/Julia starts looking for new idols and then deletes/deactivates her Insta
-Are wigs okay for this?
-Lots of idols/groups having performances this weekend (Astreal at Nezumi Con, tons at CTX Summer Idol Festival, several at Momocon, Squeeze at Animazement)
-Idols that do charity/volunteer work

Starter topic: Let's talk video editing! How much editing do you like to see in videos, or does it depend on the type of video? Cuts/multiple angles in dance covers - yay or nay? Would you rather see something with a lot of fun effects or something that just fixes up lighting and color? For live recorded performances, how can you improve the quality of (often shaky, recorded from the side, polluted with audience noise) video? Share any thoughts or ask your own related question!

I wish I was better at editing!! I have Openshot, but am too intimidated by it to use it, so I use plain old iMovie instead. I love MV style videos, with a story and cuts between the dance and the other shots. It’s hard to pull off, though. I also like what もりかな does with her videos, just little touches that make it seem magical. The one thing I don’t like is moving shots of the dance, it’s just way too much movement for me.

Same here. Unless it's just a slow and smooth panning/zooming shot, all that movement can be overwhelming.

I'd really like to see a group put out a dance shot video separate to their music video like some professional idol groups do! For example...

>Cuts/multiple angles in dance covers - yay or nay?

Yay, but within reason. It depends on the song, location, and of course how serious you are about being a net-idol.

If the song is only 2 mins long or less, there's zero reason to have 8 different types of cuts/angels. It's simply jarring. If you have a song that is long, such as 4 mins in length, then cuts are a good way to keep the viewer from being bored. It helps makes the video interesting.

If you're in an outside location where you add in weather, the background elements moving about (such as a ferris wheel or pedestrians) or a interesting locations (maybe a popup event that would make for a cool prop) than you don't need that many cuts. Perhaps a close up no more than 2 times. If you're in a dance room painted white than yeah it would be nice if you at least had cuts and cool angles.

Quality expectation. If you're doing it for fun, then let it be fun. I'm not saying release mediocre shit just don't take it so seriously. Now, if you're an anon that wants to make a small name for yourself than quality matters. Learn what cuts to use and not use. Youtube and google is there. Actually studying your favorite idols using different cuts and why it worked (but let's be honest your favorite net idol def went to a professional to edit it, or a close friend who does that kind of thing). So are classes for filming for entertainment purposes.

If all else fails then pay someone if you don't know anyone than can do a decent to amazing job.

That sounds about right for a song with a music video if you hired professionals, which they do. It’s not a crazy number.

Music is still music no matter what genre it is. The same amount of work and people to bring a song to life (as professionals) is still applied. So everyone in the studio to produced and push the song out there needs to get paid. Which even for the cheapest songs done by high end studios there’s at least 20-30 people working on it.

Hi all,

I was wondering if any anon in the SoCal area wants to form an idol group with me? Here's the fonts, the beginning of a logo and sketch of my idolsona. I went into it just thinking I'd do it solo (which if nobody is interested I'll just continue with that route) but I'd love so find someone to dance with. I'm really just looking for one person but I wouldn't mind being a group of 3.

If you're interested reply with a throwaway email or discord for me to contact you please! If you have any question I can answer them too.

The main type of person I'm looking for is someone 18 years or older. A plus would be having some kind of skill to bring into the group so we don't have to outsource as much.

when we talk about Squeeze, It made me wants to ask, what net idols that we know are LGBT? Its my fav parts about this comm, since it’s a unique thing only it can have vs professional idols not being able to say they are. Diversity is cool to me.

What do you feel about LGBT net idols being open about it? What idols do you know are openly LGBT? Should they put out stuff for pride month?

>> No.10180806

>>10180800
Probably way more than you realize; it's just that a lot of idols, professional or net, don't put their romantic status and affiliation out there. But since there's a huge overlap between this hobby and the anime community and the anime community is super gay, there's a ton of net idols who are LGBT. I'm not gonna out anyone who doesn't already openly talk about it, but if you hang around the various discords or have many idols added on social media, lots of people talk about being LGBT.

Lots of people rightfully won't consider them idols if they're not singing. Unfortunately it seems like a lost cause to try and police the word "idol" since half the people who use it are just Love Live cosplayers or online idolsona/card editing groups anyway. There shouldn't be any shame in just sticking to dance and calling yourself an odottemita if you don't sing.

I personally don’t want plan on doing anything singing-related at all (I’m absolutely horrible at it) and solely intend on doing things as a dance coverist/performer with a concept. >> No.10181988

>>10181966
I believe they coexist because there’s no clear line right now. We don’t have enough of a community to define what an idol is. Is it anime? Is it not? Cosplaying is idol? Yes? No? If there was a larger community of groups doing vocal and dance covers as themselves, I think it’d be different.

I honestly wanna thank you for writing this because it gave me a lot of hope that I can be an idol, too. My dancing is vastly better than my singing but I've been really trying to work hard on my singing a lot lately, and making little progress in comparison to better singers in this community really has me feeling a bit lost and out of place here. I feel like I'm such a baby cause if I did post vocal covers at my current capabilities I wouldn't be very well received in threads like these but after reading this I'm still willing to try it even if I'm not that good. I personally don't really like panels that are just about the group hosting it since it feels like a circle jerk if that makes any sense? Like I went to a panel for the LL group 9BPM and most of the panel was just them doing a Q and A and have quiz games about fun facts about themselves.
Wasn't really my thing but a lot of people attended. I'd prefer if groups hosted panels where they did a live or something about idols in general.

>> No.10182529

>>10182506
I really think that sort of thing depends on the con, but also how you structure your panel and present yourself. Some cons will straight up deny any dance or idol panel (looking at you, Youmacon...), and others have to pick and choose if they get a ton of dance/idol panels when everyone applies for their own group. I think a lot of people are pushing towards condensing all those individual panels into big idol/dance festivals, with the goal of bringing together the community, and those can be accepted if you present yourself well in the application. If someone is consistently getting denied, it's because they're either applying to the wrong cons, their group/them as a soloist isn't good enough or established enough, or they're presenting themselves wrong. It's pretty easy to read a panel app and see if the person applying is only applying so their group can get more attention/fans rather than with the intent of putting on a good show and actually contributing to the convention's programming.

I hate pulling this argument out but here I feel it’s valid. In japan there are actually idol groups (local and larger) that are independent and have no agency backing them but they still perform and release music. Same goes for South Korea. Does that mean they aren’t idols? Not necessarily. I understand it’s a vastly different landscape in the west but we have to apply the same mentality. If a band isn’t signed or a signer isn’t does that mean they aren’t a band/artist? No. They’re just an independent artist. It applies in Japan too.

>> No.10183146

>>10182910
I’m going to have to disagree, indie idols with no company are a thing in Japan. Simplified, being an idol is just a type of performer. Some people are doing a bastardized version in our community, but they’re still idols even if they don’t have a “professional” company backing them. There’s no difference between some net idols and idols in Japan besides the fact the culture isn’t the same here for it so the standards are lower. If we had standards and a bigger community, it would be the same thing. Some people are just playing around, but some Japanese idols are too.

>> No.10183150

>>10182867
That was it for a bit when the standards dropped dirt low after Beckii era net idols died off, but now there are more and more groups trying to be professional coming up and we shouldn’t stifle that. Some are promising, I’m not going to drop names, but there are definitely people in this comm who want to be professional and for this to be their career. They’re the ones who could possibly be threatened by these shit tier groups also being known as idols by the popular consciousness. If we had higher standards as a community more people would produce better content and we wouldn’t appear to be >>weebs playing around

The majority of Japanese idols are considered underground or indies idols. There are some general classifications like kokuminteki idols (national level idols), chijo idols (above ground idols), chika idols (underground idols), and chitei idols (bottom barrel idols). Most chitei idols are just random girls trying to sing and remember lyrics to karaoke tracks on a tiny stage, so Japan also has this debate of what actually should be considered an “idol” as well.

I’d suggest reading this article series if you’re interested in learning more about indies and underground idols.
https://www.nippon.com/en/series/c060/

Just because there’s a company backing a group doesn’t mean anyone is making money, especially now a few years after the Idol warring era ended in Japan and old idol fans aren’t interested in making new favorites after their previous have graduated. Most indies companies and idols end up losing money in the end.

This was pretty bad anon, but I do think they can go somewhere from there. The instrumental is something you'd expect of an online idol group, it's not great but it's usable. They could have made decent content with it. They really need to work on their lyrics and then their voices. The rap was awful, but pink is the only one who knows how to consistently sing clearly. Yellow sometimes speaks clearly and the other two never do. If they keep making content they could be interesting, but as of right now they're pretty bad with room to improve.

My advice from being an avid Jpop fan for too many years to all you wannabe idols. If it's jpop the biggest thing to remember it is all about the face and suiting your expressions to your dance. A lot of H!P work on improvement and getting better rather than being perfect but the moves should be down and singing decent enough.
Kpop unfortunately unless it's perfect no one will care really. Kpop is all about sharpness and good vocals.

Look in net idols subscriptions to find more, especially new ones or not well known ones.
Toodles.

At the same time though, there's a lot of people who don't know any better because they've never been explicitly outlined the reasons. If she's on the spectrum, she probably thinks the organization does good work. If she hasn't done any research herself or never been told otherwise, she's got no reason to have any kind of suspicion. It's rude of us to assume she knows better. It's just kind of innocent until proven guilty with these things. Rather than just screaming "YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER", why didn't you message them with a brief explanation and some links to articles? If she chose then to continue to be ignorant or fought you, then you'd have every reason to shit on her. Let it be said that I'm not salty about Darling Idols at all, it's just that they're not an idol group. They're a cosplay group that, every few weeks, learns a 2 minute anime dance for judges that are looking for costume quality over dance quality. I actually like watching Dietshampoo's convention vlogs, but you can see how little the "idol" part of what they do is. They only just started having members send in practice videos beforehand, they used to just learn it the weekend of the convention. Usually they have a member drop, and find a friend to learn the dance the day of. They've never done a dance panel or anything that would require them to learn a whole setlist, no singing, nothing. They're not even serious dancers, much less idols. I know this makes me sound like a salty gull and that's not my intention, because they're fine for what they do. It's just that, much like any other Love Live cosplay group, fans and cosplayers don't really care about dance skills because they've seen the dances a million times.

As someone who follows cosplay and idol groups, I have to agree about Darling Idols. However, as someone in a cosplay dance group, I have to argue that there are some groups who highly value quality in dance and performance. We do lives that require us to learn the moves and lipsynch to sometimes up to 15 songs. It's a lot of work and we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss a group just because they're a cosplay cover group.

Seconding this. I feel like her lyrics can be salvaged if she learned to make an instrumental that had an actual tune to it, same with the actual singing. It's very monotone. But this could just be that I like songs with a beat to it and that has a catchy tune and rhythm.

I don't think your instrumental is bad! It just sounds unbalanced. The drum tracks are really behind everything, and some of the texture effects are overwhelming the track and making it sound muddy. I think you have a really good grasp on picking chords that go with your melodies and arranging the song into distinctive sections, so just getting it mixed better would go a long way. I suck at singing but I've been getting better with lessons, so let me try to help. Without practice, most people use their "head voice", which sounds weak and whiny. The goal is to use a "chest voice" which has power in it and sounds clear without sounding strained. However, this takes a lot of air and muscle control, so when you haven't totally got the hang of singing with your chest yet, and you're straining to get enough air through, your throat kind of closes up a bit and that creates a "throat voice" that sounds strained and can be raspy or hoarse. There's a lot that can be said about how to train your ab muscles to push the air, and how to open up your mouth and throat to encourage resonance and projection, but I'm still learning all that myself so I can't really teach it. I definitely recommend looking up singing lessons on youtube to help explain these comments if you can't take in-person lessons, though.

>>10192705
To play off of this advice (which even if you’re learning I think you explained the concept really well!)
For some people, it can be the inverse which I think is maybe what throat anon was referring to. I know for myself I actually started out with a stronger head voice than a chest voice. It took me several years to learn how belt our notes without having it crack or only being able to sing within a small range. Inversely my sister who I took vocal lesson with could belt notes higher than I can even now but as soon as she switched into head voice she sounded like a scratchy mouse. So it kind of just depends on what your strengths are. I personally would suggest honing in on the one you are strongest at first in order to perfect it and then start to work on your weaker side to bring it up to the same level as your stronger voice.

I mean, the diaphragm only contracts when you're pulling in air. It relaxes when you exhale, so it's not the muscle you should be focusing on for singing, you need to train other abdominals to push the air out properly. Small pet peeve, but "singing from the diaphragm" makes no sense and I tend to assume people saying it don't have as much singing experience as they think they do and are just parroting back old advice. As >>10192705 and >>10192729 said, there's lots more to proper singing form and control than just where your voice is coming from.

Lemme ask this, was the room set up small? Was there only one mic? How far in advance did you know about your room?
I'll be able to give criticism better when I know these things for one part
Did you also do a run of how it would go for the live? I think that may explain why it looked so dramatically underprepared
As far as the talent goes, why was everyone so... not genki? I feel like the MC as well as the talent could have at least faked their happiness better, nerves aside.
I also suggest taking a look at some of TIF's showcases. To me, the showcase just seemed super lazy and last minute, and the fact that half your idols were reading from paper and phones for lyrics is a HUGE no no, as it shows that no one was prepared for anything.

Thank you for the advice! I'll try and answer all the questions.

The room was a very small panel room. It definitely had a more intimate environment than we were hoping for. Initially I had sent out some emails asking about the possibility of it being a main event, but those went ignored so we applied for it as a panel. Even then, we didn't hear back confirming it until like...ten days before the event? I'd been preparing for it under the assumption that it would be accepted, but even still I found that a lot of things couldn't be finalized until we knew the time and length of the event, so there was a lot of last minute rushing. A few people changed setlists. We weren't able to do a runthrough, and the sound system the convention provided was horrible so we were using a backup speaker and backup mics provided by the showcase participants themselves.

About talent, I should take a lot of responsibility for the low energy in the room. I was the MC and although I've improved, I'm still naturally a very quiet and low energy person so I need to work on that if I'm going to be doing any MC stuff in the future. I was honestly really excited, and not unhappy, but I was nervous and trying really hard not to be cringy. And then when my set came on I made a ton of mistakes too, so even with practice it wasn't enough, and I know to practice and prepare even harder next time.

Anyway, none of those are meant to be excuses, just context. I know the event came off as unprepared and kinda sad, and we're definitely going to work as a community to improve that. This was a learning experience for everyone. Our goals are to try and get in main events in the future, so we're able to have a little more setup and runthrough time as well as more reliable tech. We also want to turn it into an audition-based event to ensure that participants are more prepared and even really talented acts like ChiRi girls (the pink and yellow duo) have to get in fairly and be prepared.

Oh damn if it was that big of a clusterfuck room and sound wise, you did your best....

Setlists wise: You should have a cut off date of at minimum a week and a half before showtime. Changing the setlists is literally the worst thing someone could ever do that close to time, and that's unacceptable that it was allowed.

Your MC skills can improve. I suggest looking in a mirror and practice facial expressions and talk for 15 minutes a day. Repetition helps a lot.
Another suggestion is doing live streams. Maybe just sit and talk with you audience and practice facials there too.
Use your cringe to your advantage. Sometimes even if you're cringey, you'll come off as kind of cute and loveable.

Just remember practice is the key. Uploading odottemitas can help get feedback on how you look while performing as well, so I highly recommend it.

All in all, there were many understandable juvenile mistakes. I think if you take any and all constructive criticism given to you, you'll have a chance at putting on a better showcase!

I won’t discuss the music mixing/lyrics cause that’s not my expertise, to me I think it’s decent and alright. Anons more qualified can go more into it.

The music video overall was a flop but I agree with the anon above that I appreciate a more mature and sexy concept. The execution visually was horrendous, to be frank there’s little to no excuse for that. The whole point of gravure is to be sexy in an innocent or “unknowing way”. Nothing about her acting felt like that, she didn’t need to be a siren drawing you in but it honestly felt like she didn’t know what being sexy is. She look stiff, she did some generic sexy things like playing with your hair and stuff but if felt like a child mimicking what they saw on tv and not an adult embarrassing her body and being carefree. The dead eye doll look into the camera needs to stop.

The styling of her over all looks felt cheap. You can spend little on lingerie or a sexy outfit and have it look fantastic. The outfits she was wearing weren’t special in anyway and didn’t follow a theme. It was just “here’s a different bra and panty” every few moments. Makeup was bad in the sense of how it appears on camera through the lighting, edits, and honestly it wasn’t excuted well as far as skill. Either do what’s in your ability and take some more time to learn.

The environments were bland and added nothing. The camera is hers, she could of seen through the editing process it didn’t look that great and shot again, she isn’t renting a camera crew and can only take one shot. Some of the angles and shots didn’t make sense, the outfit is simple there was no need for majority of those close ups. Watch a few YouTube videos on different music video angles and shots and study gravure music videos.

TLDR: loosen up, research how to be flirty and sexy, research how to appropriately film shots, decorate the environment.

Sage for the run on sentences and spelling mistakes. On my phone and uses autofilled more than I should have. I mean embracing not embarrassing

I feel like she might have been going for more of a western sexy than a Japanese gravure sexy? Which might be okay or even smart but I agree with most of your points otherwise. It was badly executed (though frankly not the most cringeworthy thing I've seen posted here) She just needs to keep trying

If a group is known for prioritizing their well being over being idols, it would be Squeeze. I don’t see them prioritizing Squeeze over anything, it seems like they cancelled all their plans around the time their member probably lost her job. I don’t see why someone’s loosing their job and needing to transition after already being in the group is bad. It would be different if she was asking for money for something else besides transitioning but I feel really sympathetic towards her and wish I could help. It’s always seemed like Candy is a lot more active and Mari isn’t, this is probably why. They’re both open on twitter about being mentally ill.

Flusay girls posted that new members video. The mixing could be better and the song is repetitive but they're pretty cute imo

I'm pretty intrigued but I hope they start structuring better.
