/cgl/ Idol Spreadsheet (Recently updated, under new management!) - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WtgRe5cjKIR0BYGhw9N8ahxChLqEFLbZIRbAazooh-o/edit?usp=sharing

Original Music Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfmgukQM2isUtJJZz1MY4Jn4zPcbl0wDU

Previously:
-Some dumb shit about Idolized (reminder: there's a lolcow post if you really need to shitpost)
-Idols using cosplays from Love Live as stage outfits
-Julily has pretty dress
-How much for an original song composition? Gulls start talking money
-One Wish posts awkward video, provokes question of "how long can a group call themselves new and be excused for shoddy performances?"
-How can Western idols appeal to Western audiences?

Starter topic: Actually I'd like to use the last bit of discussion on the previous thread and ask about languages. What are the merits of singing songs (covers and originals) in your own language versus in Japanese? Is it still jpop if it's not in Japanese? How about just jpop inspired? Should idols even go for a jpop appeal, or use their music to showcase the culture and language of their own region? Feel free to share worldwide examples of overseas and net idols singing in their own languages.

Featured: Coco from Ice Qream

Some new content to start off the thread:

Julily - Lily Lily Burning Night - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sddYcOv1RwQ

Risa Rosé - Debut @ Mini-Mini Con (includes her original song Hall of Mirrors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVdWb1bZ2RQ&

Delusion Idol Mira - Among the Stars - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeKosUx9Noc

Also, Coco from Ice Qream will be graduating from the group after having a final concert this summer (hence the thread photo). Thoughts on that?

What really seperate JIdol and Kpop for me is despite the "cute" looks, they have a more down to earth feeling without looking too "tryhard" that I would associate with the not so wholesome Kpop style groups like K/DA or Blackpink where they come off as hardcore hip pop girls who hang out in the side of the neighborhood associated with street gangs and their thug guy friends.

Don't get me wrong, I followed and stanned Kpop for it's fierceness and sex appeal but it really doesn't match J-Idol who's talent in general have avoided the worst in image changes associated with top 40 artists like Ariana and Miley Cyprus. They don't end up taking some faux delinquent image to stay popular, they can hit their 30's without drastic image changes.

Jpop in general is about consistency, it is about having an image and sticking with it music wise and maturing in a way that isn't a desperation to look cool. You don't need to be drastically cool like K/DA or those fierce KPOP groups. But cool in JPOP is about maintaining the same grace as you did when you debuted.

Yeah I think people on this board have unrealistically high expectations for candid shots lol. I don't know what that anon is seeing. Coco is super cute, she's just got glasses and that gives her more of a girl-next-door vibe than a kawaii idol vibe. And that's totally fine.

>> No.10165708

>>10165174
I have the same sentiments. While I LOVE kpop for their sex appeal and in general how badass they can be, I find that I love jpop for exactly the opposite reasons.

K-pop idols are so different because they do all this rigorous training for years for just the slim chance they get to debut in a group or as a soloist. And by the time they do debut, their group is practically flawless because that is the standard. Completely in sync dancing, next to perfect vocals, etc.

But on the flip side, japanese idols are really just thrown into it with the hopes they stick. The appeal of a lot of japanese idols for me is that if you're a fan of a group long enough, you've seen your oshi grow and be better than they were when they started. This gives you that sense of like "wow, if they can do it, i could too"

I think that's where the mentality comes from when you see all these "idol" groups pop up all over the net. You don't see people from the west trying to be kpop stars, (sure they cover the dances, but do they REALLY wanna be them?) Yet, you see so many new accounts with "japanese style idol group" in their bios. A lot of them are definitely LoveLive-fueled pipe dreams, but japanese idols in general really just have this grace about them where you don't necessarily want to BE them, but be LIKE them.

sorry for the blog post lmao

>> No.10165754

I think when it comes to being more successful as an idol group in the west, it's going to take aspects from both kpop and jpop to appeal to people. You want that same level of showmanship as a kpop group, while also having the fun vibe of a jpop group. Being creative with outfits while also not coming off too childish. Possibly expanding your content to not just jpop but kpop and even songs within your place of origin. As long as you can stick to a theme and balance image and actual talent and skill, I think that makes for a successful group. But also, what defines success? Not everyone has the same goals and expectations. But I think having a level of fame and fortune would be success. But then you have to start acting like this is your career path rather than a hobby. And I think most people can only do it as a hobby. Cause that's all that a budget allows for.

>> No.10165864

I accept that the mentality of groups today seem to be a 'love live' pipedream but I also think a lot of groups follow the J idol perspective. To throw themselves in the deep end and improve on the way. Ive watched hello project groups make mistakes and grow and you all love them and have a fave but westerners get hate for trying. Saying they need to take a bit of mentality from the k idol side of things would work if a lot of people in this community didn't bash a group for trying kpop when they were originally jpop (as you get older kpop seems better suited) . I agree to improve you need professionalism but also for people to actually give these groups a chance. Majority of the time it's a hobby not a life goal. Let the girls/guys live their pipedream and do what they want without being bashed for being beginners or trying something new. To summarise I've never known such a contradicting forum in all my life and I follow many. Welcome to 4chan, they say one thing one minute and contradict themselves the next. Haha.

Wigs are super limiting when it comes to certain dance moves and choreography, even when properly pinned in. So I prefer seeing idols use their real hair. Also wigs are too, idk, one note? It's more fun to see idols change their real hair up over time.

>> No.10167812

I think that a happy medium is possible if you used realistic looking hair colours in a wig and style it accordingly.
I think it was in the last thread but there was a girl and she was getting a lot of comments about her hairline etc and things like that can be fixed by wearing a natural or even a j-fash wig. It probably even offers up a lot of versatility when you have different outfits and costumes too.

Yeah. Definitely sounds like her previous group didn't live up to her vision. But also I don't know why she kept adding more and more members when all along it was difficult enough with the number they started with. As a passionate person myself, I too can get super motivated and inspired to the point where I take on more than I can handle or should. Hopefully she has learned her lesson. I also understand it's probably really hard to not want those same things again. It just takes finding the right people....Which is difficult. And the difference between member's motivation levels and priorities is why a lot of groups break up.

I’ve witnessed groups fall and end because of poor choices that were primarily the leader/creators fault. There had to be enough turmoil between her and everyone else to where instead of people leaving, they just disbanded. It all boils down to poor choices and we’ve seen Mimi make poor choices. If not lipsyncing, you have to at least have good expressions. I hate watching a high energy dance and seeing people look angry/numb/scared/etc because they’re too focused on remembering the dance; even if they nail all the moves, it still brings everything to the next level if you interact with the audience using your eyes/face. That said, I love lipsyncing and feel like it makes a lot of dances look cuter/like the dancer is more into it.

If you're not dedicated to conveying something to an audience and are just there to go through the motions like a classroom assignment, you're not an entertainer. Have something to give. Your talents and skills as an entertainer are for the audience, so that's where your focus should be.

You absolutely have to up your social media presence. I'm not talking about posting every day, but posting wisely. If I'm being entirely honest, one thing that absolutely deters me from checking out somebodies stuff is honestly if it just looks bad. If you create flyers or any sort of advertisement and it looks like ~graphic design is my passion~ level of ms paint garbage that's a red flag for me. I am assuming that since you're at the level of creating merchandise that you're capable of creating a decent advertisement, but I'd always get a second opinion from friends or even followers if you'd like a more unbiased thought process.>>10168167

It definitely helps, but I personally don't think it's necessary as long as your facial expressions are good. This is something you'll have to work on with your members, since people have a tendency to deadpan which is unpleasant to watch.

I remember way back when Stellure started, and amidst all the drama and stuff surrounding Bright Future, one of the comments here stuck out to me because it said something along the lines of idols being a story, and how they hoped Stellure would keep going and improving to tell a great story. I started off thinking they were ridiculous but they really did grow on me, and now that they've disbanded, I couldn't be more happy that these three chose to continue. They have the experience of Stellure's failures behind them, we already know they're pretty talented at singing and cute, and they have the same team that Stellure had for composing, mixing, etc. By continuing as a small, close-knit group rather than the huge group Stellure was, they're avoiding the kind of problems that we saw plaguing Stellure throughout their span, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the direction they take with this fresh start.

It's a hard question to answer, because in making a group with someone who is (slightly because in the end we are a pretty small community, lol) more well known it is a delicate balance of using the more known one to get people exposed to the group and get opportunities, yet the known one almost taking a step back to make sure the other members are well exposed as well to help the groups popularity and internal balance be stable.
A big tipping point in that is that the situation may come about where the one who was the most known at first could be overshadowed in popularity by other members, and they have to be okay with that or else the group will collapse. (Makes me think of Stellure)
Put another way, if someone makes a group just to have backup dancers or accesories for their performances and doesn't have their heart in it to really work together and accept members where they are or where they may rise to, they are in for a bad time.

Answering from my own personal experience it definitely depends on the intention and goals of the “more popular” member especially if they started the group. I’ve always been interested in creating a platform to showcase cool things. If there’s cool people putting themselves out there and doing cool things I want to help them succeed. I’ve also enjoyed the motivational boost from my group and the camaraderie. I was in a failed group growing up and don’t like dancing alone that much. Now that I can offer more things that help with the idol sort of platform I’m glad to share and help my friends also work towards their dreams. I try to give the support I wished I had starting out.

Pretty much any music released now has a ton of post-processing to make the vocals sound better than their natural voice. It's fine, and to some point expected, for you to do the same. Just make sure you work on your natural voice as much as you can too, especially if you plan on singing live. As long as there's not a huge difference between your live singing voice and your processed voice, people won't mind a bit of roughness in your natural voice.

Since you all seemed to be very well versed in the idol community, what advice would you give to new groups trying to make a name for themselves? Cover groups and original groups.

>> No.10171598

>>10171585
Hi! I can't give you any advice on how to get followers or anything (I barely have any myself), but there's a few things you can do to at least get established and put out good content:

-Before all else, practice. Too many groups get caught up in the easy/fun parts and don't practice, so their outfits might look great but they can't even sidestep in sync.

-Try to balance your social media posts between fluff posts and "real" content. If you only post when you release a song/cover. then you might not have a lot of posts because those big things take effort, but if all you post is selfies and fun facts, then it looks like you don't do much. Progress videos can be fun, but make sure they show effort and improvement and aren't just a half assed try at putting out content.

-Do not engage in drama at all. It will guaranteed make things a million times worse. If someone is dragging you in DMs, Tellonym, 4chan, etc, just let it roll off of you. Accept the criticism if it's something that you can learn from, and if it's just mean let it go. If it something you absolutely have to respond to publicly, keep it professional and leave details/feelings out of it. "We are aware of the accusations made by X and are dealing with it privately, thank you for your understanding."

-Accept critique, accept change, accept being less than perfect. You won't be as good as you imagine in your head, that's totally fine. Make sure you are always learning and improving but don't stress about getting every detail perfect. Having fun and giving a strong effort will make you more appealing than being a stressed out robot in videos/on stage.

-Engage with the rest of the community! This is the kind of thing where most of your fans will be other idols and performers, so they'll be your biggest source of support and promotion. Join collabs if you want, see if there's any dance/idol festivals in your area, interact with people's posts on social media.

I've had people I knew, or someone in the group knew apply to my group and I always felt pressured into letting them join because I was afraid they'd hate me if I didn't. Honestly what >>10172727 said, with friends you tend to be more lax. My group when it started consisted of people who were strangers to me but the key is to work on the friendship and trust aside from making sure groupthings get done. It's worked so far but as opposed to whatever Mimi will most likely will do again, it's because we don't have a set leader and everyone has their own thing they take care of within the group. In Mimi's case, it is probably best to start a group with friends, since with strangers I can almost guarantee her not knowing what they can bring to the table/not knowing if they're up to her standards, hence doing everything herself and then overworking again.

She's only doing this because other ex members are starting to make something of themselves and have lives soon/have been showing progress which looks amazing.
She probably thought in killing Stellure she'd destroy their will to be creative too. Mimi never let them help and probably thought that the reason Stellure ever had anything to show was because of her.

Now they're proving her wrong and she feels the need to wade in and bring the attention back to her with a group of strangers because she's burned so many bridges.
We gave her many chances to let us put our faith in her. We know she frequented here and heard our constructive feedback but she ignored it and she crapped all over the other members from start to finish.

I thought Florida was. A few conventions around here get a little clogged with a lot of hallway lives. I know Holiday Matsuri particularly had that problem; at one point, there were, like, three hallway lives going on at the same time.

I think it's really cool. The concept of shuffle units is really interesting, so I'll definitely be going to check it out. I slightly have the feeling that the shuffle units are already predetermined, but I like that there's the option to vote.

I actually had come up with a concept where idol could submit themselves into a poll and people vote on which idols they'd like to see perform together, similar to the LL sub-unit thing.
Not sure if anyone would latch onto the concept though since there's alot of smoothing out that'd have to be done.

Nah one of them was me. I know this is a tight knit community where everyone knows each other, but let's not try to accuse people of samefagging. Most people here know of Auracle Idols and Mocha, so it's believable that several people would be on either side of the issue.

Honestly, the dance lounge wasn’t ideal in a lot of ways but I still appreciated having the space. If they do it again next year and work out some issues from this year, I think Katsu might end up being one of the best cons for dancers.

That is true. My friend saw this group on Instagram called palettesidols and we thought they were a bit on the overweight side.

Recently, they are donating money for a good cause. That changed our views on them. Being a bit chubby can’t change the fact that you have a good heart. Are they the first group to do that?

I know at least Danzoo Dash does volunteer work for a local zoo, and I think the girls from Fantasea Splash volunteer or work at an aquarium. I actually really like the idea of combining overseaa idol activities with charity/volunteer work as kind of a way to bridge the gap between the weird weeb stuff and a relatively normal western audience, especially when it's thematically relevant, so I've been looking into ways to get involved myself.

I would love to do this with my group but every time I tried to mention it, one former member would always shut me down saying that we should first invest our money into merch or more costumes. To me, I think we all understand that this is a hobby, and hobbies cost money. It’s not our goal to have our audience pay for our hobbies, we should know that going into it.

Tbh, it’s kind of a topic I’d like to hear more opinions about. How do you feel about groups/soloists using things like kofi or patreon to support their activities? Is it inappropriate if they aren’t aiming to be professionals?

>> No.10176894

>>10176854
I think it's more than acceptable to use those services, especially if you're giving something back. Lots of people offer things like photosets, early access to content, chekis, cards, merch, etc. in return for donations. I don't approve of begging for money or posting about your money issues, but if you donate to someone's patreon or kofi it's pretty much just a way of saying you like their content and showing appreciation.

>>10176842
>>10176837
I've been skirting around asking my group if we want to maybe raise money to go to a DV charity since it's a super personal issue for us, but we aren't popular at all and probably wouldn't raise much anyway. And anything we did get would probably be donated from pity so idk. But I want to use whatever influence we have to help people but also don't want to be a bummer.

To those talking about QtXing, i’m Melody and I appreciate your feed back! I can agree that the vocals and mixing for our first song we’re not great by any standards and thank you for recognizing that we’re only amateurs. We’ve been putting a lot more work into our next song so I appreciate everyone who’s critiqued our debut

Additionally about art, I also agree my art is not perfect but to suggest we hire someone instead is kind of in bad taste. We’re all teenagers in that group and we don’t have very much money to spare so we try our best.

Anyways thank you again for sharing your feedback and I’ll keep it in mind :)
