This whole thing just raises a question for me which I hope can spur a discussion.

What do you consider a good artist?
Oftentimes I see work trashed despite it being competent in its own way. Some artists purely stick to simple cute chibi things and get called bad- When IMO they are quite good at what they do, they just are not capable of much more. Does an artist having a limited skillset make them "bad" or are they just... Limited?

I oftentimes see detailed paintings hailed as the end-all and be-all of good work, basically the only people universally regarded as "good" are people like wlop or kawacy. But even the good painters draw shitty chibis (like, REALLY weird looking) and make bad designs in other styles because theyre just good with painting. But what is it about painting that is the sole qualifier for a "good" artist, and why are their lack of skill in these other areas overlooked because they are good at painting?

Personally someone, for me, is a good artist if theyre diverse. Even if their work isnt blowaway impressive, if they can create work in whatever style needed, it shows they have a lot of fundamental skills theyre pulling from and an ability to adapt. Adaption IMO is very important as an artist. I think these kinds of people are way better than artists who draw mind-blowing pinups, but thats all they do. What do you guys think?

>> No.10174945

>>10174725
School ain't even out yet, what the hell. Why are they shitting up our threads early?

On a brighter note, I've been feeling much better about my art quality recently despite a few years of near hiatus. If the anon who was freaking out about neglected art skills in the last thread is still here, art is always waiting for you to come back when you are ready.

What even?
Let's be honest, if it sells -> the artist makes money -> they make a profit
that's all that fucking matters. if it's considered 'good' or not is irrelevant if it doesn't make a profit.

>> No.10174972

>>10174967
A lot of things that sell wouldn't be considered good by the greater artist community and vice-versa too, so that's a limited way of looking at it. Plus some artists' works only sell well post-mortem. Honestly, what I consider good is anything where the artist can reliably relay their vision to the viewers. This requires solid fundamentals, at the very least. Some artists have very lovely rendering, but if the composition or anatomy is a mess, it's hard for me to call it good.

I like the OP image because I can quickly find the new thread when it updates, unlike when it's random images. I know I can search, but it's just nice not to have to sort through all the thirsty "who is this" cosplay girl and horny convention meetup threads. I know nothing about the OP artist and I wouldn't care who makes the threads, except the few times I've seen it NOT be this OP they've fucked it up, made it too early or made competing threads. >> No.10174994

>>10174941
I personally appreaciate diversity, an artist that can do different styles and focus competently because they’re skilled in a lot themes is more impressive than someone who draws really good pinups but say, are bad at backgrounds and tends to sameface.
But a lot of artists focus a lot on having a personal style, and especially in something like AA having a style and branding helps you distinguish yourself and stand out. Of course having an original style is original and makes you special, but you can usually tell when the artist uses style as a defense for not learning the basics like proper anatomy and perspective. I wish more artists would focus on the foundations more and do studies, but I get that there’s no incentive for you to do so if your art sells anyway.

Also: I have an old sloppy meme print. I cringe internally because I know I can draw better legs now, but everyone who buys it doesn't care about the bad art, they care because it makes them laugh. It still sells well so I still keep it around.

I don't got it in me to critique this one because I like your style, it's cute anon. The style works well as a sticker set, would also be cute as wooden charms. Personal nitpick is that Link's outlined hair goes against the lineless/partial lined style you went with everything else.

Only issue I see is the bright white border kisscut is too jarring. A solid fill of any of the background colors would be better.

For comparison, at small-medium anime cons with <15k attendees, I bring in $2k. I always do worse at comic cons compare to anime cons. If you don't have any art from western series, start making some for fanx. That will help.

Considering the white is only visible at the bottom of the design, and the cut border is also uneven (closer to the design at the top, farther away at the bottom), it's a problem of the design shifting and no longer being aligned with the other layers. I'm not saying every bad charm is Zaps fault instead of customers not preparing their files correctly, but there's literally no reason to defend Zap this hard when multiple people have mentioned getting faulty charms, and there being a side by side comparison to a better charm with the same design yet none of the same problems right in this very thread.

A lot of the time I've seen people talk about how some art is "well rendered" or maybe even something like "hyper rendered", but I've yet to figure out what it refers to and it's made me curious.

It basically refers to how much painting is done to the work to bring out the forms. A lot of artists start with "flat" color and then render on top of it. Some artists choose not to do much rendering, and some artists will do too much, usually to hide the fact that their base art is actually not very good. If you learn techniques to render materials very well then you can take a mediocre drawing into a high quality painting. Alternatively, if you have very impressive base artwork, sometimes it's better to leave it flatly colored so you don't muddle the illustration and composition.

Meeeeeh. Every booth has BNHA or Pokemon. And they all have charms and charms and charms and charms and charms. Some prints were neat, but as an adult in her 30s, I no longer decorate my walls with pretty boys or weeb stuff.

I saw two tables with non-fan art with whimsical anime girls and a few lewd ones. I just don't see why people throw 300-400$s for a table, when you still sell this stuff online and I'm going to guess you get better sales online because it's just so crowed. Your customers cant really see your swag.

I always make it a point to hunt for my favorite boy, who is rare because he's a side character, and when I find him, it's an insta-buy, but this year what I found was meh. Like the artist just drew him cause he's part of a bigger cast so...gotta have them all I guess. Out of the 5 tables I found him at, I bought from 2 cause the other's were not work the $15 splurge on a meh charm who didn't really care for him.

>>>Oh, his 2 sentence bio in the manga said he likes ice cream. Quick! Cover him in an ice cream motif to show how much I know about the show and him!

I don't want to be "that person", but I've been noticing that with my fav character too. So I did that snarky thing, where you ask the artist about the show they clearly aren't fans of just to see if they drew all this merch to make coin.

Yes, yes. I know the days of AA being just a simple little get together of artsty crafts are dead, and AAs are now people's lively hoods, so they need to draw ALL the BNHA boys, and ALL the Scouts and ALL the Zeldas and ALL the cutest Pokemon Evvees even though they hate the show and don't know their names.

So my character likes coffee (or more to the point, his favorite drinks are flavor based and coffee FLAVOR is his favorite/he really likes Amercian Stabucks cause they're like milkshakes) and it's never really brought up, it's also just in his bio in the manga and in a flashback for the summer he had a job in Texas in a Starbucks when it was young. ANYWAY. I asked the artist, "I love that part where X meet up with Y at that cafe and they had that naughty little date. It was so hot!"

She said, omg, I love that part too!

HA! Caught you bitch! That never happened. But I didn't say anything. I just KNEW. Oh well. Anyone else finding AA to be as stale as the dealers room? Merch is so bland. Or I'm just bitter and nothing is exciting anymore?

Both. There’s definitely an oversaturation of the same stuff, big popular series, samey styles, artists copying concepts and ideas from each other. There’s a lot more stuff in general, both good quality art but the sea of mediocrity gets larger too. Social media and easy storefronts makes it easier to promote and sell online, but these artists all take inspiration from each other and you’ll end up with a lot of the same.

But yes, you also seem bitter. Calm down.

I’m the Meh poster and I ain’t gate keeping shit or quizzing anyone over anything like the other anon. I’m just bored with seeing the same thing over and over of my favorite character because there isn’t much to go off of him. It’s not the artist fault, I just feel like they’re making merch for him out of some odd quota. Great, I found my boy. Oh, it’s the same idea and design I saw last year and the year before that. I’m not throwing my money on everything that I see now just cause it’s a little too ‘meh’ for my tastes.

>> No.10179020

It's not the artists' fault, but I'd certainly say it's the con's fault for jurying for the same type of content from everyone. Lots of artists who I want to buy from get continually rejected from Fanime because their art isn't moe enough. I like uniquely styled original works and Fanime's jury definitely does not. On the flip side, if an artist has a style that guarantees them a table year after year, they're not going to be especially challenged to branch out and grow, so they'll just bring the same game year after year.

If only the general public complained about it more. They definitely notice it, because I see more complaints on social media every year about AA being boring, but they just don't care enough to make a big enough fuss for someone to do something about the jury. And they never listen when the complaints come from the artists' side.

NYART but would you mind giving examples of what you mean? I've been seeing this complaint a lot and I'm not quite sure I see it myself as someone who's usually stuck behind the table all con.

Most recently, I saw a ton of complaints about variety in the AB forums but when I walked around, it seemed like everyone had a variety of styles and fandoms so I didn't understand where the attendees were coming from.

There's bound to be some overlap in design motifs for characters from the same series but I think execution/style can still set them apart. I haven't really seen two things from the same fandom by different artists and gone "Oh, they look exactly the same" - so I'd love to see some examples if you have any!

Oof, okay I will admit that you do have a point with Eeveelutions there. Have you noticed the same sort of phenomenon with humanoid characters too?

I wonder if it's just because the artists that I associate with don't have any Eeveelution merch at all but I guess I thought that trend had died down. I guess I might be making the assumption that my artist social groups represents AAs when in reality that's probably not true. That does explain why some artists might find it harder to understand complaints about variety of fandoms and design since everyone I'm friendly with have incredibly different art styles and fandoms.

This also seems a bit symptomatic of how so many newbies starting out ask "What's popular? What sells?" and they get told Pokemon, Ghibli, and Sailor Moon so we end up with a LOT of really bland similar looking prints for those fandoms specifically.

NAYRT but from an outside perspective, I can see where you're coming from. I'm guessing you just went to their social medias and took a general glance of what their art is like right? While Sachin Teng is known for their originals, if you just go onto their twitter you can already see a ton of fan art - and they sell at conventions too.

I think the difference is knowing how established they are and how long they've been established for which makes it concerning to others that there's someone being mistaken as them? I could show an ST piece to any number of artists I know and they'd be able to recognize the style rather than the piece. I have seen plenty of artists try to emulate their style or study it, that's how influential they are - but this fox_troupe has taken it to a point where people are mistaking them AS ST? I think they're both very talented but I personally think ST has a stronger sense of composition but I can also see where people see the uncanny resemblance. It's one thing to study someone and them remix their style but it's another to emulate it to this degree.

Obviously the debate of the sanctity of style is different for everyone and each case but I can see why people care and/or could care less about it LOL

Attached image is a fun game of who do you think drew what. If you just gave me this art at a glance, I'd just assume it's the same artist and because I'm familiar with ST's work, I'd assume it's theirs. If I was looking closely enough, I can definitely still see differences but that's only if I knew to look.

That being said, since you said this is a common enough illustration style you see, I'd love to see other examples/artists using this style since it's one I enjoy greatly! Who knows, maybe I've just been stuck in an internet bubble, haha!

Even from the post itself, you can tell some things are worded in a way that makes the OP look better. Still, I don’t doubt that they’re telling the truth. I’ve only tried their wooden ones once but they turned out beautifully—super vibrant, white layer was fine, cuts were good and all. Was also worried given the QC nightmares from them on acrylic charms, and I’m not sure if I just got lucky that even during sale time they all turned out well, but the baseline quality for their wooden charms seems pretty good!

Yo I got deets from my friend who was at the scene throughout the con. For one, the helper is pregnant not the artist. There is a lot of photographic evidence from the staff, artist, and my friend that I have seen where their luggages were extending over a foot from the side of their table. The artist behind them that they were complaining about was well-within their space with their chairs and stand up against their own table as much as possible WITH all of her merchandise UNDER the table. If you had mirrored her setup to @rainboemuweeps (shortened to Emu for the rest of this for brevity), there should have been plenty of space in between her area and Emu's as a walkway for other artists to walk through and out of the aisle.

@rainboemuweeps (shortened to Emu for the rest of this for brevity) had 5 assistants and a large amount of suitcases. The artist behind them spoke to them multiple times throughout the con. Emu and their assistants reportedly kicked the artists' stand multiple times, NOT just once as claimed. There are pictures of Emu's bags and assistants being right up against the back of the artists' setup as well. (1/2)

>> No.10181255

>>10181245
Fanime's staff has both the evidence from my friend, the artist, and their own staff recording things that went down which ULTIMATELY ended in Emu getting kicked out. It definitely was NOT the fault of the artist behind Emu or the Fanime staff as they seem to have been incredibly thorough. Had Emu's suitcases been a mere 2-3 inches on the side of their table ot probably would not have been noticed. I saw the picture myself and it was a suitcase with some kind of case for merch sitting on top of it OUTSIDE their tablespace in the aisle way and OUTSIDE the bounds of their table.

Emu themselves even states that their assistant was at the side wall with their suitcases showing just how little room they had bc of their 5 assistants and overflowing baggage. The multiple violations should show that they didn't listen to staff and they weren't following the rules and were creating a safety hazard. They were given warnings and they fixed them by breaking other rules and creating different hazards. Had there been an emergency or an artist that needed to get through that side of the aisle, I'm sure that it would have been bad. The fact that they're whining like this just makes me think they're salty and low-key want to bash the artist behind them, but know if they did directly Emu would get caught in their lie. Or they're delusional. Sorry, I'm usually nice but I'm just really annoyed by all the lies and their shitty attitude. (2/2)

Is it looked down upon to sell old anime merch at my Artist Alley table? I have a few anime figurines & toys I want to get rid off that would be too expensive to ship online, but I don't know if selling or giving away old merch on my artist table is allowed.

At a local AA, I've caught artists selling second-hand/new anime merch that obviously isn't made by them (ie. Nendoroids, Funko), merch that were displayed and priced on their table, so I tell the staff to address it. At each different times, it turned out that the artists:
- were trying to sell stuff like DH
- were clearing out their rooms
- had made arrangement for sales and AA was the place to meet up to exchange

The staff tells them they can't do that as it didn't abide to their AA rules and what AA stands for, and to put those items away. For the craigslist-like sales, they had to put those items away till their buyer comes to pick them up.

For your case, I would suggest keeping them in some freebie bin, or any-freebie-with-purchase, under the table. And check with your AA first before doing any of that if it is okay to do or not.

Quick question.

I know Funimation makes it a habit to tour artist alleys and get fanart from their IPs removed, but how far does that reach go? Like, they only have rights to Lupin the 3rd series 4, so if you make Lupin art where he's not the blue jacket version, will they make you pull it? Or if you make Arslan fanart that more closely resembles the 90s OVA designs and not the new tv series they own.

Also, do any of the other anime companies pull art/products for more than using the series' emblems in the art?

I've been out of the con game for a while and my only Etsy C&Ds have been from western franchises, so I really have no idea.

This just reminds me of that saying which goes something like “Good artists copy, great artists steal”. You should emulate better artists by studying what makes their work good, not just rip off styles as a shortcut so you can hide your flaws and what you lack on the fundamentals.

Ah cool I got it right. I was gonna post this when the anon first issued the challenge but I figured I'd be accused of just checking their twitter.
My main clues were the rendering of fabrics, the knockoff ones spend a lot of time on the metals but go super lazy on the rendering of some of the fabrics/feathers and background details. Plus those rely more heavily on the character expressions to engage the viewer. The other pieces are all around more competent and consistent, detail oriented, and notable don't rely on expression; the art is engaging as a whole piece and not just because you can tell how the character feels.

Hey so AX is obviously a big money maker if your art is good. But how about for those with mediocre art?

For any low-tier artist who makes common merch (prints, pins, charms, stickers), have you made significantly more sales at AX compare to other cons? Or do you find AX AA to be over hyped?

I have this friend who’s never done AX but really wants to and often whines about not having a table (it’s really annoying). They’ve even looked into getting an exhibitor booth. They have this impression that everyone banks at AX due to the sheer size. Is AX really that big of a deal to low-tier artists?

I thought low tier artists tend to drown at AX.
My first year at AX I barely made costs. My art was okay-amateurish and my table partner was a little lower skill leveled than me so combined we looked incredibly unimpressive.

The next year I had my own table, more variety of stuff, and overall better art and did a lot better. Been a few years since then, definitely doing better but won't lie, my art is stagnating, so last year I noticed a drop in sales cuz it's difficult to compete with so many artists with trendy merch and high skill levels.

I feel like I'm struggling at AX compared to a lot of artists I know, even though I'm still in the positives, so I can't imagine how low tier artists are doing.

People act like doing well at AX is a given and if you have good art you're "doing it wrong" but the fact is there's so many artists packed in like sardines that if people don't make a beeline for your table on the first day, you're likely to be competing with a ton of merch for the same series. Everyone's sales cut into each other - more customers will have spent all their money or even overspent before finding you. The bigger the AA, the more this happens regardless of skill level.
The other thing I noticed is that CA cons tend to be more current compared to cons in other areas of the US. If your friend goes, make sure she's got good merch for least one of the big trending series of the year/season.

I'm going to convert because I'm tried of playing with tinker toys every time I have to set up. But at the same time, I need side panels and I have no idea how to do stable side panels on one of those photo stands.

I seem to have the worst luck. I'm often trapped in by neighboring photostands. And it's annoying when photostands invade my space especially when the artist didn't ask.

At AX, my neighbor's table display (cube organizers) was 4 inches onto my table. It was in the way that I couldn't stand up my PVC pipes. I tried moving the cubes back onto her table but they were zip tied to her tripod photostand. So I tried shifting her photostand but other people's photo stands were in the way. The whole row was photostands. So I ended up shortening the length of my pvc pipes by 4 inches.

My other neighbor was also using a tripod photostand and when he asked for permission, i said NO. But as the day went on, he slowly shifted his stand into my space. At that point I just didn't care anymore.

Anyways I recent switched over to a flat foot, telescope cross bar photostand and it's nice.

Setting up pvc is a pain, they look tacky, and I couldn't figure out a compact way of storing them. My photostand is much easier for me to handle, and if I really want it off the floor and out of the way, I'll just set it on the table and clamp it down. Side wings are a work in progress at the moment though. Funny enough I have the grip clamps with a telescopic pole as wings at the moment and it reminds me of just pvc pipes. Just a little more streamlined

Thank you all for answering. I was looking for confirmation that even with decent art, you can't expect to do significantly better at AX. I've actually done AX a few times and found it to be over hyped (for a low-mid tier artist like myself). Each time I've made the same 2.5K (gross revenue). That's ~600 per day, which is my normal amount at any other con. I don't have many art friends to discuss AX with so I wasn't sure if AX sales being underwhelming was common or not.

>>10182794
I heard that any table spot at AX, including the back, is still good. There's no dead zones-- everyone gets foot traffic. I have no online presence and my art is meh. Yet my sales at AX haven't suffered. Again, I've pretty much made the same amount (gross per day) as any other con. With decent art I think you can expect to make your normal amount or better. Of course when you factor in all the expense... oh boy LA is expensive.

>$2.5k /total/ at AX
Oof, that's REALLY underwhelming for AX desu. I make more than that per day on average. AX is so good for me and other artists around my tier. I get so surprised to hear people call it a meh con or even disappointing. But keep going at it, your profits should increase as long as you're improving and innovating.

From what I've heard, you have to be really popular and well known in order to do well at AX so that people will seek you out specifically, and if you're not that well known and you don't have any other appeal factor you'll just end up falling through the cracks, so it's not totally implausible that you end up with the short end of the stick due to your circumstances or skill level.

I know it'll never happen but I'd love to see what the real averages are for -everyone- in AX's AA. I would bet money that for at least everyone making 5 figs, there's someone not even making 4.

Like, Sakuracons generally a good con and its like, 270 attendees per AA table. AX, even with its massive number of attendees splits with like 150 attendees per table. That's just a pure split, #of attendees / #of tables , not everyone's even going to step foot in AA (and AX still lets you buy 2 booths I believe). But everyone's got a budget and I feel at this point, there's just so many booths for relatively few fans that you're fighting that much harder for every dollar. Unless you're decently established before you go, you're just going to get drown out by the other 700 some odd booths.

I wish there was a place that people would just anonymously publish their AA profits for every con on an honor system so everyone could compare where they are and what looks "normal" for any particular con. I know we sort of do that here but not in any organized fashion.

Would also be a good look at how the AA business is doing in general.

I dont mind sharing my experience.
First two years I did 2-2.5k and last year it jumped to 5k. I had a new less crowded display with a couple charms which I hadnt been carrying before, 4 enamel pins, a new shirt and stopped worrying much about pinback buttons. I only brought 1 new print but ended up selling 55 copies of it on a fluke so I'm thinking I'll need to figure out something new for this year lol.
I'd love to be one of those artists that bring in 20k but I know that I'm not nearly productive/focused enough

This definitely applies to AX. AX is strict about keeping the aisles clear. Last year their rules stated that photo stands had to be right up against the table. You can't have photo stands behind you.

I posted >>10183064 and to add to that...
AX staff stopped by a few times telling my neighbor that his photo stand needed to be closer to the table. But he couldn't really do that cause his space was obstructed by his neighbor's photo stand. Thus he had to shift his stand into my space. And I'm not just talking about the legs/tripod being in my space but also the pole as well. So my wall of prints was covering up some of his prints.

Do you all have any tips on reporting artists or vendors to cons? There’s this one vendor I see at smaller cons that sells stolen and traced artwork, and a guy who used to vend with her says her grab bags are junk she clears from her room and upsells for $10-$25, and that they almost got kicked from Momocon because a director saw she was selling stolen art, those miniature wall scrolls from eBay
