My dumbass posted in the old thread so I’m reposting it here.
I have really nasty and scarred up legs so I always wear dance tights when I cosplay characters with bare legs. The character I want to do wears sandals though so I’m not sure what to do.
Putting concealer on my legs doesn’t work too well because the scars have a weird texture to them. Should I just wear tights with sandals?

>> No.10166811

>>10166809
Depends on the kind of sandals you’re wearing (if they’re super strappy and open vs something more covered and peep-toe). You can find some pairs of tights with an open toe that covers down to your heel or has a stirrup across the arch of the foot. Otherwise, you could just wear the full tights - it’s all about your personal comfort level and I doubt anyone would care.

I'm a professional seamstress, and a blazer for a cosplay was one of the things I attempted to sew (with a pattern) when I was a beginner many years ago. I don't recommend it AT ALL. Even now, I usually just buy and modify blazers for cosplays, they're just so much work, and I'd say impossible to do well if you're a beginner. Gunbuster anon from the previous thread back again with some extra questions.

I'm currently torn between doing the head with paper, and covering it with fiberglass/bondo... or eschewing the fiberglass and making it out of Sintra instead. Which do you think would be better for this sort of project, and why?

Second up, I plan on getting a grey overall to use as an undersuit. Whats the best way, do you think, to give the areas that show through the armor pieces that 'lined' look? Am I resorting to a fabric pen for this, or do you think there is a better way?

>> No.10167619

I'm new to cosplaying and would like to modify a plain black cotton t-shirt by adding some designs, such as stripes, to it. So you're looking for a fabric fuse if you wanted to attach fabric. Its kinda like double sided tape where you iron it to the material then you iron it on the garment. If its smaller stripes or straight lines you could see about using some fusible bias tape.

But it might be simpler to use fabric paint to do the design you want. If you do use paint be sure to put a piece of cardboard inbetween so it doesnt bleed through to the other side.

EL wire (sometimes called glow wire) or EL tape are also solid cosplay options, that provide different kinds of lighting. If you want just thin areas of glow, like to outline a shape, you want glow wire. If you want a solid, even band of color? You want EL Tape.

Alternate idea: get a Kokoro suit, and then cover up the green areas with blue (like a blue fabric tape, unless there is something you can iron on?). You can use the existing green sections as a guide for exactly where you blue needs to go/trace patterns to fit it, and the rest of the suit that you don't cover up will remain the same.

Its a little bit more work that just buying it, but it should add some 'depth' to the suit do it doesn't look just like a flat jumpsuit. Like how NGE or Dva cosplayers will add foam armor bits on top of a printed suit to bring it to life.

You used too much contact cement/didn't let it dry properly before binding the pieces. Contact cement is pretty forgiving with uneven edges, it shouldn't be the issue here. I've glued together much more wacky pieces than what you've cut, stuff that bent in ways they shouldn't.
You only need to apply thin layers of the stuff. I usually apply 2 thin layers, letting them dry for about 5 minutes between coats. You want the foam to soak up the first layer, then apply a 2nd layer so that you have a proper glue surface. Both surfaces should be dry to the touch before binding them together. I use a small cheapo chip brush to apply my contact cement layers.
Slowly work your way along the seam making sure the edges that will be visible are as flush as possible to eliminate post processing. Make sure you are pinching the seam together hard to ensure you get proper contact between the surfaces. If the surface isn't immediately sticking, it's either still wet, or not enough glue was applied.
You can fill in those gaps in with acrylic caulk, using water to smooth out and feather out the seam. Alternatively, apply a small amount of contact cement on the surfaces that didn't adhere, let it dry for 5 minutes, then pinch all those gaps together. In your case, I would go with the latter solution, then the former to clean up the seam appearance.

As for painting indoors, the "correct" way to do it would be to have a fume hood and a vapor mask.
You can create a makeshift fume hood with a large plastic box, some flexible ventilation pipes, a fan, and some filter medium. Just do a web search for "cheap DIY fumehood" and you should be able to find something you can afford to build.

Love you anon, really on your debt. I already have a good mask against the fumes and particles (after your 30s you start becoming paranoid about your health), ill just need the fune hood at this point.

One last thing: advices for sanding? Using a coarse, medium and then fine (60, 80 and 120) sanding paper works fine on 1cm foam, but on the 0.5 one was really rough, even after using the heat gun.

I wan't to get some nice, juicy blood trails and splashes on my Jacket cosplay. My current plan is to take some dye, heat it up with a higher concentration than is recommended, and pour it into some Dixie cups that I can hit with my prop bat to get some natural, drippy stains. I don't think the dye would have enough time to saturate the material. You could skip the dye and use diluted paint in a base tone instead then fill in the splatters on your costume with more paint? If you're going for realistic splatters, I'd recommend using something that will give off a better spray like a soaked car wash sponge, a towel, or something. Use a paint color that's more of a darker, oxygenated color then use a slightly lighter color when filling in for a believable shade.

paper mache: https://youtu.be/FCiYNE_hmNg.. Honestly though Sally's mask is very generic, you could buy one from a costume store and paint it. If the mask is too happy, you could apply craft foam, paper mache, or air dry clay on top of it to fix the features. And use black see-through mesh for the eyes (check out some videos about fursuits for that one. Sounds wild, but they know what materials work best)

Yeah, that's kind of me concern with my current plan, the timing would be way less than it should be. Assuming I'm going to want acrylic paint, any tricks I should now to keep it's hue bright, or should I just go for a higher quality paint so it keeps it's pigment up?

>>10171548
Good question, but I'm not sure what the answer would be. I've seen pigment built up through slightly diluted layers of paint, but hue is another story. Imo, I think you would be okay with any type of paint, especially because it's just a paint splatter, but it might be a wise idea to watch some videos on working with acrylic paint on youtube.

Its worth pointing out that paint to mimic blood SPECIFICALLY totally exists, in the form of model paints. You can pick up a small container of 'Blood for the Blood God' (Citadel Paints brand) for a couple of bucks. Off-brand versions might be cheaper.

You can dab it on the bat directly and smear it around, or water it down some for a more 'splatter' effect.

How do I go about hemming jersey knit fabric without impacting its stretch?
Some mom blogs I've read suggested to use a twin needle on a straight stitch setting, but I can easily rip the stitches so I don't know why they're claiming that technique works for hemming knits. Am I doing something wrong here?
I don't want to use a zigzag stitch as that looks unprofessional.

Use a wax based makeup like NYX's chubby pencil in Milk (NO glitter) and take it back and forth on your browns. Use a spoolie and really make sure that it covers each hair. Once you've done that, take an eyeshadow of choice (powder, not cream) and fill in your brows as you normally would. The eyeshadow should also be matte. Personally I find this easier using a thin angled flat brush. Make sure to clean up the edges with a makeup wipe and bush through gently but thoroughly to maintain a natural-esque look. You may have to put on a few layers of shadow to build the color. Set using a spray lightly if possible, but not required. Because you're going for white, half the job is done for you by the pencil. You should absolutely still go over it with a powder to set and ensure color vibrancy tho. There's plenty of tutorials on youtube if youre a visual learner

i saw this tutorial and wanted to use it but not sure if i should cut the wig like this

would it be best to purchase a short wig and then get clips since the bows can probably hide the clip part where the braids start?

you're best buying a twintails wig, lopping off the tails and using he braided clips if you want the part, but getting a short wig an the clips would also work well. if you get a wig that's long enough to make that length of braids AND make it into a twintails with using that tutorial, it's going to be very hard to manage when you're creating the part and its more than likely to end up super tangled.

>How do I make a puffy apron like this
There's plenty of tutorials on how to make an apron on youtube, but for the puffiness, you add batting between the layers. Most apron tutorials do not include a lining layer, so in short:
>cut out two pieces of the bottom apron piece (only where the puffiness will be)
>sew them together with one side open (probably the top)
>insert batting
>attach to waistband, thereby closing the puffy part and finishing off the apron

>And how could I add that frill to the gloves
Make the gloves as normal and then pleat a large rectangle of fabric (again, look up tutorials). Then add to the normal gloves and hide the seam using the orange strip.

My bad, I posted before reading your whole statement through. Yes, you have the right idea for the gloves. You'll be making knife pleats like that of a uniform skirt. However making them stand up like in the picture will be difficult. You could add some stiff interfacing to the interior of the gloves where the pleats will sit.

im just a bit iffy about using clips because theyre always really clunky and the braid will stop at 3 inches (because of the clip).
i was thinking arda, but the base alone is $30 and 2 mid length clips are $15 each so $60 without shipping which aint bad for a wig.
arda has braided ones too but they dont match any color of the other wigs and theyre out of stock in white :^) so i cant dye the wig either

I've never cosplayed before and have a question for people who've been to conventions. I wanna do some type of low fantasy Conan-esque barbarian. I like to think I have a reasonably well built and athletic body for my age (need to tan a bit more for this look), but would going full on no shirt (of course wearing accents like bracers, necklace, ect..) come off as cringy/inappropriate? How common are shirtless young men at the various conventions? The first convention I'm going to is with some friends and a few months away, so I'm trying to explore my options.
Also, not really barbarian, but pic related would also be something along the lines of what I would be interested in.

Planning out Polly Geist for August. Never done body paint before, and want to know the seagull's opinions on brands and their personal experience in full body usage. I'm hoping to stay accurate as possible to pic related and also want to know if mixing body paints to make a certain color is doable, since the current tones I'm seeing from stuff like Snazzaro and menhro(?) seem too off for me. Mehron Paradise paints are a very popular option, I don't see a lot of people using Snazaroo since the Homestuck days. You can seal both of them with translucent setting powder and/or makeup setting spray (I like MAC's). For the body, like the other anon said, I highly recommend armsocks and tights. They're reusable, don't smudge or leave stains, and won't melt off your body. Painting your entire body will take a lot of paint. Welovecolors has a huge range of colors, are completely opaque and now offer seamless gloves that cover the whole arm, so you'll only have to paint your face, neck and chest.

Shit! Didn't see this thread before! I'm sorry! I made a thread! Well, I suppose I'll ask here as well. My bad!

I'm trying to make a cosplay of a character that wears a helmet. I have the helmet (comprised of a face mask and a back piece that both come on separately and attach with velcro), but now I need a hat. Now, I can find the types of hats I need online, but the problem is, they are all sized for human sized heads. Not for HUGE FUCKING HELMETS.

Is there anything I can do to make a hat bigger in size without completely fucking it up shape/aesthetics wise? Or do I just need to start from scratch and make it somehow? I don't really have... ANY experience with this. I kinda thought if I just got the largest sized hat it would be able to fit over the top (the helmet isn't actually HUGE, and fits snugly around the head without much wiggle room, but still, relative to a human head, it's far bigger. It's basically a goddamn shell after all),

I have cash, but I don't really know where to start with this. Can anyone offer some help?

Any tips on how to make wings like these ones? The original post didn't say what materials were used or how they put them together or anything of the sort. If I had to guess I'd say maybe the "arms" (The bones that kind of make the frame) is made of wire/upholstery foam and the "skin" of the wings is craft foam that they textured to look more leathery. Any one have any ideas? How far off am I?

Do the ruffles on Oriko's dress look like horsehair ruffles? In this ref I'm thinking that's the only thing the sections on this could be but on other refs it really... Doesn't look like horsehair is the way to go. Will post other refs below for guidance.

On top of the chicken wire or whatever stabilizing structure you want to use. Looks like cardboard would be an option as well. If you do use chicken wire with the expanding foam, make sure to cover it with a single layer of paper mache or some sort of backing so that it won't just fall through the holes. Less is more.

>> No.10179092

>>10179049
Ah, my apologies. I thought you meant how to make wings in general. Looking at the picture, it appears that the crafter created a wire support, overlaid with foam, and then sewed a sleeve on top of it. You can see the seam lines going down the long side of the wing in the first picture. Personally, I think you would get a better result if you painted the foam rather than make a sleeve because you could manipulate the foam and get a cleaner result vs. struggling to have those details show through the fabric/nylon sleeve. An airbrush would give you a nice clean gradient between shades, but I think a spray can would work just fine as well. For those bony details going down the back, you could make shallow cuts in the foam and expand them using a heat gun. It would round out the wire support (without letting it show through) and make it really look like a gargoyle wing.

>I’m still kind of scratching my head on how to achieve that.
When you prime the foam, use a sponge brush and stipple on the primer. It'll create a textured surface that will resemble leather. To see this in action, check out PunishedProp's video on youtube for how to make Astrid's helmet. Looking up some foam painting techniques for how to resemble leather would also be a good idea. I've seen people iron crumpled aluminum foil over foam to create a leather texture too.

Oh no, no judgement. I thought you meant elastic bands like pic related. That makes more sense.
The glue is preventing the elastic from stretching which is why it's difficult to put on. Any sort of laminating spray is going to do that too. Unfortunately you can't evade sewing, but luckily you don't need a machine. A few hand stitches in some key places should keep it in place. Or if you want the lines of elastic to stay straight, you could run a zigzag stitch to retain the stretch.

I have very dark, thick, defined brows and used Colourpop's No Filter Conealer (which is like $7) in shade 00 (white) to coat them. Dab it on and brush it through with a spoolie and then apply matte eyeshadow on top. I like to go through with my base color and then add in some of a darker shade so they don't look so flat. Also, remember that eyebrows are darker than the hair on your head! Finally, I spritzed a bunch of setting spray. They stayed in place during a hot, sweaty convention under a hat and wig with bangs.
