I think the problem is that not that many recent adoptees/fans of the fashion are even aware of what classic brands like MM look like, beyond maybe popular pieces like Whyteleafe and Antoinette Fleur. And a lot don’t actually wear lolita, especially not on a daily basis, so they have no interest in the comfort/general presentability of a coord.

I can't help but feel like the divisiveness on Fanny's coords comes from her face itself. She's the typical "classically pretty," which we all know means "white". She looks as white as a white girl can look. Classic lolita and vintage fashion have a lot of cross-over, which can cause confusion, but if you see an Asian girl wearing, say, >>10171801 it will undoubtedly read as lolita because we know lolita as a Japanese fashion and we know that this outfit fulfills the requirements of a proper coord. You take one look at Fanny's face and, probably on a subconscious level, think that this very European-looking girl must be going for a traditional western vintage fashion look instead of the inspired Japanese one because it does have a lot of vintage elements and you'll consider those before remembering that yes, she still fulfills the elements of a lolita coord.
I think other girls with very white features aren't questioned as much because even their classic coords have some sweet elements like teaparties or giant hairbows (and whether that even is still classic is a whole other thing I'm not getting into) that look off enough to register as purely vintage.
