Something about her cosplays always had something off with them.... Like the horns on that Damara cosplay looked like poo, and her Aradiabot looked so heavy, in the clothes and makeup.

I’m not a fan of Homestuck but recently I’ve been watching old cosplay videos and I watch this one, https://youtu.be/gLE4eKtqvvM . I expected myself to cringe but it’s also kinda cute. I wish I could get the chance to play duck duck goose in cosplay one day

These pictures are beautiful, I really wish Homestuck were still big. Great cosplays, and even just seeing the characters and designs is good.
A city six hours away seems to be trying to do something on the 13th of April, probably too expensive and difficult for me to go there but gives me inspiration to make one more attempt at organizing a meetup in my city.

The community aspect of the Homestuck fandom is something I genuinely miss at cons. People try to replicate it now, but it doesn't seem to have the same fervor as the HS fandom did. Plus, the ultra restrictive copyright forced more people to actually make their costumes instead of running off to Taobao.

It was like the nicest group of cosplayers back in the day too. Not the crappy kid ones who gave it a bad name, but I was running a meet up and Nepeta's ancestor (been too long forgive me) had a horn break right before the shoot. My friend ran her back to our room to fix it.
After the meet we're chilling in the room and we get a knock on the door. It's the cosplayer with a gift from artist alley for me for letting her fix her horns and running a good meet.
Was super sweet and still one of my more fun cons.

Homestuck gets a lot of shit and secondhand-embarrassment nowadays, but I'm so nostalgic for it. I still get small urges to cosplay from it all the time but I think I'm just missing the community from back then. It was a really wonderful group to be apart of, haven't felt anything like it since.

That was part of it, but there were definitely companies trying to get a quick cash grab off of the western popularity by selling plastic horns. I remember seeing it come up a number of times when the fandom was active.

Last but not least on my feels trip, I think people dont give Homestuck enough credit. When it comes to cosplay, I think its impact can't be overstated.

There were simple enough outfits that anyone could cosplay from it, which was a lot of people's intro to the hobby. They'd be welcomed and included just as much as advanced cosplayers.
But there was also SO much innovation and improved on techniques. Before Homestuck it was so, so hard to find information on bodypaint in general, let alone making it actually look good. We compared brands, made armsocks, learned how to seal it (eventually) and contour with grey and black. I believe people are much less intimidated by using bodypaint in cosplay now because Homestuck really paved the way (and made the mistakes). Don't even get me started on horns.

Big agree to what everyone's saying in this thread. Homestuck was what got me into cosplay, and the community lifted me up for so many years through a lot of hardships in middle/high school. I should look back on a lot of what I did as cringy, but it was just such a great and enthusiastic fandom to be a part of. Might just throw together a quick troll cosplay for 413 this year, I miss cosplaying from it.

I never really got out of Homestuck since I was little older when I got into it (first read at maybe 17 or 18, I'm 22 now) and I have no, like, cringy memories of it. Wish I could go back to when it was popular because I was way too self-conscious to cosplay when I was in high school. It was so cool to go to meet ups and have your weird friend group finally meet other people who liked what you liked as fervently as you did. Great thread, OP. Also EriFef is the best ship.

Gotta add armsocks to this, too. There were tutorials floating around before (the first one I ever saw was for a weeping angel), but when people started mass-making them to sell, that changed the body paint culture.

On a personal level, the fancystuck craze (and the critique surrounding different artists and their designs) helped me learn what "good" fancy shit was versus tacky, uncoordinated "fancy" stuff.

Absolutely. I owe SO much to fancystuck, since that's the main thing that inspired me to get into cosplay. That was so many years ago, and it sucks because I've only now gotten to the point were I can actually pull off a fancystuck design, craftsmanship-wise. Have half a mind to do it even if no one would care, it would just mean a ton to me.

but yeah I totally agree here. i was a homestuck back in the day and i wasn't one of the crazy terezi's who ran and licked random people's faces.
i was a chill trickster (which confused people because i wasn't screaming and running) and often damara and nepeta.
my friends who got me into it were really cool and the homestucks we met at cons were extremely nice.
sometimes i cringe about my homestuck phase. but i wouldn't trade that time for anything because i met so many great friends. i'm considering getting back into homestuck cosplaying and hiveswap as well.

If you want to find meetups and gatherings, the best route is social media. Instagram is another active platform where you might get lucky. If you're worried about getting "sucked in" to Facebook, set limits and boundaries for yourself (ex, only check it for a maximum of an hour a day (and set a timer), don't scroll down the newsfeed, etc) and don't download the app to your phone.

Nah creep level by age is a bell curve, it peaks around 50 and then it comes back down to cute when you're a senior. If you cosplay with your spouse or your kids it dramatically lowers creep level as well.

It's awesome to see how far they've gotten since the homestuck days, cowbuttcrunchies in particular were a big reason I started cosplay in the first place, they were always so nice and helpful when they used their tumblr regularly and their work is so inspiring. The finale for the Crown Championship of Cosplay at C2E2 this past weekend. Regan of Cowbutt Crunchies got Crown Champion and Ivorivet (fka Yaexrae) got the Vero Fan Favorite award.

It's an international craftsmanship contest with regional qualifiers like WCS. The final part pits one person from each participating country against each other. This was CBC's cosplay.

Wasn't expecting to see a homestuck thread after HSG died a while back. We'd been dragging it's corpse for months, but, makes sense with 413 coming up.

If any of yall are at Tekko, we're hosting a drawmeet at 10pm Saturday since the con takes place on 413 and I won't be around my usual comm to run anything.
There are still a good number of cons with decent homestuck turnouts. Katsu was really good this year. I do miss the online culture though- so much of fandom has moved to twitter now, but twitter seems shit for cosplay.

Why do people act like fandoms are like cities? It must be boring as fuck to only cosplay from one fandom. Out of all my completed cosplays and my "want to cosplay" list, I only have one or two per fandom. Although I usually pick my next one based on what's popular so that I can get maximum popularity. I did a Penny Dreadful cosplay a year after the series ended and legitimately no one knew who I was except my friends (who really only knew because they're my friends. None of them watched Penny Dreadful.)

I want to cosplay Aradia, but I know it'd feel more accurate if I did Nepeta instead. So accuracy vs preference but it's not like I don't want to cosplay Nepeta either its just I plan on putting a lot of resources into this cosplay and I'd like it to be as accurate as possible. Would a 4'11 Aradia be weird?

Anime North was pretty dead on the homestuck scene, and it didn't help that the meetup got rained out. Over the weekend I was a solid Terezi, a Feferi, Fat Fem Tavros, and the guy from friendsim with the question mark, which was the only one that wasn't just shirt+horns+(paint/the skirt for the feferi). No pics, but not much that was worth taking pictures of

I don't understand why fandoms move on to the next shiny thing. Why did the Homestucks move on to Undertale? It really is not that great of a game that everyone seems to be praising it for.

Has anyone been to or heard of any Can Town meetups in the past year or so? Been thinking about hosting one, but I have no idea if people even know what those are any more.
