It doesn't feel like it anymore. I don't know if I'm just older and jaded but the lack of a summer con to work towards has hit me pretty hard as of late and I've noticed that a lot of people on my Facebook seem to be struggling to get motivated with cosplay. It's most likely because there isn't a lot of events worth going to.

It's frustrating that MCM has it's fingers in all of the competition pies too because I like the idea of trying more competitions and getting experience but I don't necessarily want to go to the London MCM for that unless some have spread out to Manchester?
I know EGX has EGC but cosplayers aren't that well received and there's not a huge amount to do when you weigh up the length of time standing in lines to test games for 10 minutes or so.

Anyone else feeling like this? I'm just venting but as summer approaches the void is staring back at me and reminds me of a couple of years ago when we didn't have a summer con.

Amen. I'm so over this 'cosplay guest' BS. When we had Kamui that was pretty awesome because she is well known among cosplayers. She actually makes her stuff and isn't a gatekeeper to her secrets. Sure, she makes money from her books but there isn't anything in them that she doesn't show you in her videos so I have a level of respect for her.
A lot of other guests are just there to be costhots or sell prints without bringing anything else to the table.

I'm still in awe that we actually had someone like like Matt Mercer. I know he's so much bigger and popular now compared to when he guested for us but I miss being excited about having a guest who had actually done something notable. I miss having guests who would actually hang out with us around the con rather than make appearances and piss off when their time was up.
I used to get so excited thinking about what I was going to bring to have them sign but nowadays I don't even care. It's not even worth looking at the guests that go to events like MCM because you can't even get a seflie with them and they charge you ridiculous prices for signatures and pictures if they're popular.

HJ have been rinsing up a lot of the dealers that were making a fat stink after the winter show for opinions / suggestions, going so far as to take some of them out for lunch. I've got my lunch invite but I don't really want to go all the way to London for a business lunch... but hey, it looks like they're trying at least? I booked tables for the summer show because they made them so much cheaper than last time.

Hopefully someone told the Japanese organisers that you're expected to ask for a discount from the published hiring rates for the Olympia halls and not just automatically pay the full rates like some kind of polite Japanese idiot? After years of hearing drama about it, I'm honestly considering going to LAGC. I can't make May MCM and attending isn't really a big financial issue for me. The worst that can happen is that I don't enjoy myself and spend my Saturday doing something other than sleeping through it.

Yeah I mean, my take on it was this: I've been avoiding this con for years because it's ran by MT who is not a nice character. But then I thought, I have no idea who runs MCM and what shady business they might get up to, and yet I still go to that and would probably continue to do so if they were outed as a pedophile. Obviously two wrongs don't make a right, but my moral highground excuse feels flimsy when I put it to the test. The other reason is that I don't even use MCM to the fullest, I feel like I wouldn't notice the drop in quality. Honestly I'm kinda happy in a way that uk cons are dying. The "big summer con" aka amecon has always been historically garbage compared to Aya 09 and earlier it went downhill after a staff member died and everyone lost motivation). I've gophered every one for over a decade now and the ops are just a shit fest of no communication and friends with benefits. The only reason to ever go was for the drunken cosplay parties. We all know it wasn't a charity con because Will just pocketed the money to pay for his nice apartment in the city centre.

It's funny because back in the mid 00s we used to get real guests (Mercer loved the nightly piss ups) that people had heard of, but now they struggle to get anyone to come because its just so fucking dire. They're not what they used to be and they can't keep up with American conventions that actually feel like real cons with interesting panels, great guests and nice photo opportunities. I've been going to cons around the world and America just somehow gets it right, katsucon and sakuracon are a pleasure to attend. Plus you can buy a gun if you've had enough.

MCM isn't a convention by any means, its a dealers hall filled with bootlegs (kek tokyotoys) but somehow manages to at least get guests people give a shit about and gave genuinely interesting panels and events. Nobody gives a fuck if you're cosplaying and if anything your damn skirt is gonna block someone from squeezing past. Not to mention they dont give a shit who pays for the tables so don't bother with the artist's alley because they're all mixed in with the dealers. It's always just walking around the same room for 4 hours before fucking off to nandos before the public transport goes to shit.

Even then if you want big names jump on the eurostar and go to Japan Expo, same thing but on such a huge scale you can fap to ghibli or shigeru miyamoto. Heck shoot me in the foot now but the French actually shower between each day and the cosplays are stellar.

As for the books. I’m fairly certain years ago you could could get a breakdown of costs/budget from the event if you asked or it was posted anyway. Venue hire for Warwick is like 30k. Tech hire etc another 20k, then insurance, guests and so on. I remember reading a breakdown of costs on a Facebook thread posted by someone on a committee (I forget which) to do with the “drama” of hibanacon not being able to afford to pay its guests even though small cons in America literally 10 times the size can.

Japan Expo kinda sucks honestly, the location is just a huge warehouse and once you're in for the day you can't go out and come back in until the next day. Only exterior areas you can go to are a small overcrowded patios and some empty concrete bit between two buildings. It's no anime con, as it covers everything you can think of, and I mean everything. They even have some panels for British shows (cos they think they know British TV and shit more than us lol).

There's a serious fight for on-sight hotel rooms though, so prolly best to find a place elsewhere. Plus the people there really know how to drink and party.

Save your pennies and go there. Sounds like I'm just one big ad for the con, but I don't care. I love going (when I can afford it), so more Brit gulls that go, the better.

I thought that Reedpop buying MCM would improve things, but so far I haven't seen anything to indicate that. They've gotten rid of the face of MCM and I've heard that people can't get onto the Pop Asia stage unless they're acts from previous years or sponsored.
The whole idea of that stage is that it was meant to be somewhere they could put skits or performers which couldn't get into the main masq because anyone competing for a competition got priority.

I don't think that the amount of bootlegs has gone down since either. I mean I knew that MCM was shit but I didn't think it could get any worse either.
