So this lithuanian cosplayer got banned from twitch for blackfacing. As a european Ive never heard of this before and I think its in general barely known here. I would have colored my face aswell to avoid whitewashing desu but well

So you just dont cosplay a black character in general?

>>10149864 I mean like, I know a lot people really don't mean any harm when they do this, but from what I've heard from other people, a reason why some people don't like it when people darken their skin for a brown character (and not just black characters I assume) is that person doing the blackface will get positive attention (presumably) while actual poc doing non poc characters will just get over looked.

>> No.10149869

Look, there is a simple reason why you shouldn't color your skin into that of a person of color.

When you take that off, you can go back to reality. Black people can't.
If you need to darken your skin to "accurately portray a character" then you just suck at it.
Historically, whitewashing has never hurt a white person. Blackface has and continues to do so.

It's 2019, and we're still doing this asinine shit. The internet is widely available. If you can search this shit board, you can easily look up why blackface is unacceptable.

And it's not flattering period, whether you're trying to insult or not. You look like you've smeared mud, shit, or brown paint all over you.

Also if a white person is cosplaying an asian character and tapes their face/fakes exaggerated slanting eyes/uses yellow undertoned foundation then yeah that's hella racist too, even if I see it more often than blackface without it being called out. The issue of blackfacing is a symptom of American exceptionalism and its assumption that America's social issues extend to the globe. Well basically, cosplay a black character with your skintone and you are white-washing, darken your skintone and it is black face. Even though the definition of black face is painting yourself black in order to mock black people, but whatever.

I guess the solution, as POC will ultimately tell you is to not touch these characters at all.

And as for the comment that "if you need to change your skin color to make the cosplay good it means you are doing a bad job", no one would fucking dare say this if you were cosplaying a character that is blue, they would call your attempt half-assed.

It is what it is, American POC are justifiably very sensitive about these topics, due to years of abuse and now the have a platform to try and take some things back. Should these things be animu characters when there are serious racial issues? Should they be applying their America-centric POV in other ethnicities, especially ones that never had anything to do with POC and slavery based on skin color?Maybe not, but we need to let them have this.

I just wish they would not try to claim characters that are clearly not portraying black people as their own too, like lets say Garnet, who is now apparently only allowed to be cosplayed by black people, even though she is fucking red, and an alien.

To start with, it looks bad and patchy on her skin, and she got it all over her gloves too which looks disgusting.
Secondly, no one thinks a white person cosplaying a black character is whitewashing, except possibly the most sjw-hungry tumblerinas. The same way no one thinks cosplaying a fat character when you’re skinny is fatphobic, or cosplaying a male version of a female character is sexist. Or cosplaying a blind character when you can see is ableist.
If someone is a stickler for accuracy, the skin tone is never going to look accurate anyway. Whether you use paint, arm socks, or straight makeup, it’s always going to be obvious it’s not your real skin tone. If you’re so anal for accuracy, I don’t know why you wouldn’t pick a character that more closely resembled your own physical features. If you just want to cosplay a character you love, then inaccuracy shouldn’t be an insurmountable hurdle to begin with.

This whole debate is such a privileged one and it's sad that the opinions of black people don't matter, when this whole thing is about black people.

But sorry people don't like it when you smear mud all over your face.

This thread is very eye-opening, Americans are an interesting bunch. Cosplay makeup specifically meant to make your face the shade you want, from porcelain white to sunburnt tan, and face tape to reshape your chin and eyes are popular in East Asia where I'm from. I usually try to powder my face as white as believably possible for cosplay unless it's a male character since that gives better results and it's the expected norm. Granted, anyone wanting to go darker than a hard tan usually turns to photo editing to get the job done rather than painting themselves.

2. When a white person darkens their skin for cosplay they get a good amount of praise for their portrayal. When a poc person cosplays a poc character they tend to just get overlooked. All of this policing is basically encouraging the idea that not embracing the dynamics of biology is the "right thing" to do. Telling people what skin color they can or cannot have is just as backwards as telling a woman she has to wear shape wear because the natural shape of her torso is offensive.

Punishing people for making decisions about how to adorn their body is a form of oppression.

Has anyone here ever actually seen a blackface performance? Have any of you ever known a person of your parent's generation who's seen a blackface performance? No, if you've ever been to any sort of cosplaying convention then you've seen people cosplay outside of their race all the time. My friend is very white and does Sombra from Overwatch; she doesn't paint her skin brown. I'm honestly convinced that the majority of you who are arguing about this don't even go to conventions and are here to race-bait.

>Is either protecting my skin from the sun or letting myself tan offensive?
No, and that's not what the issue is here. There's a difference between tanning and painting your skin black as a costume. If you also googled the definition of blackface, its "the makeup used by a nonblack performer playing a black role", which is exactly what the person in OP's picture is doing.

>Punishing people for making decisions about how to adorn their body is a form of oppression.
People disagreeing with what you're doing is not oppression. Not to mention that OP was banned on Twitch for violating their terms of service, which is what they are allowed to do.

>Has anyone here ever actually seen a blackface performance?

So here's a series of examples. I think people have expanded the concept of what is blackface out too far. Can you say that her make-up makes you feel offended? Sure. I'd even say you could call her rude, insensitive and whatever other name you want. But looking back through the history of blackface, it's pretty hard to try to link this cosplay to what was the INTENTIONAL inaccurate depiction of people for the purpose of making fun of them. If someone changes their skin tone and is not making fun of people when doing so, I think it's hard to connect the two because without the direct intent to spread hate and hurt then it's pretty difficult to claim that his was damaging to the public.

She looks FUCKING HORRENDOUS. I have yet to see a cosplayer with artificially darkened skin that didn't look like complete shit. There is no way to make it work. It doesn't make you look anymore accurate to the character. It's distracting. You wouldn't want to see a black girl with skin painted peach so she could have a "more accurate" Sailor Venus cosplay.

You're better off using whatever natural skin tone you have like pic related. Will some people get mad regardless? Yes. But if you paint your skin a different color you will get shat on even more AND look terrible. Expecting anything otherwise is beating a dead horse.

I can understand how it's bad to make your skin darker to cosplay a black character due to history of doing it, but does same apply to other races?
For example, would pic related be fine? This isn't about if the cosplay looks good, but Anthy isn't meant to be black, her nationality is never stated in the series but the bindi on her forehead suggests that she's Indian, or from somewhere else in South Asia. There are more races than black. Plenty of ethnicies and races have tan and dark deep skin. Never heard of mediterraneans? In the summer they can get close to that color if they go a lot to the beach or pass a lot of time outdoors.
Brown/tan colors are not exclusive to black people.

It's worth noting that different cultures have very different histories with people coloring their skin to look like different race. No idea how it's in Lithuania where that girl is from, but here in Finland it's a long-standing Christmas tradition for schools, kindergardens, politicians and whoever else feels like it to do a short play which is variation of Star Singers called "Tiernapojat", in which the Wise Men travel to see newborn Jesus and king Herod orders his soldiers to slay all the newborn boys. Yes, it's a popular play in kindergardens.
One of the characters featured in the play is King of Moors, who refuses to bow down to Herod. The person who plays him traditionally has their face painted black. You can probably guess who he is in the pic related.
Again, this play has been going on for ages now, and is broadcasted every Christmas on national television and radio. Different cultures have very different reactions to these things.

It really IS as simple as blackface = bad, because we don't live in isolated communities where *maybe* it's permissible out of ignorance. Black people live all over the world and don't deserve to be dehumanized, and that's what blackface does. It doesn't hurt anyone to revise their cultural representation to not cause harm. Case in point: The Zwarte Piet stereotype has been revised by the Dutch governments to not be blackface (including the red lips), but to use bright blue or bright red or bright orange, etc, and eliminate the stereotypical traits. That way they get to keep a cultural character while divorcing him from his problematic and dehumanizing elements.

It's not like it was only whites enslaving blacks, or even them primarily running around in Africa with nets in hand trying to catch them. Africans were enslaved by other African tribes, who then sold them forwards to whites and arabs, who continued to sell them forwards to different regions.
Yes, the market for slaves is what resulted in people being enslaved but saying that it was purely European demand is ridiculous, since amount of slaves that were sold to Asia outnumbers the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

>>10151187
My point is that unlike in America where painting one's face is obviously frowned down upon and made a big deal of, in parts of Europe it's surprisingly commonplace.
You act like it's crazy that somebody could be this ignorant, but when something is only made big deal of in certain circles, is it really that weird for people outside of that circle to be aware of its signifigance? This is like people getting upset about others calling anime characters "traps" or using the r-word because they are considered absolutely unusable in their circles. But unlike with the n-word there really hasn't been wide attempt at making the words taboo, so of course most people would not be aware of the weight they carry.
Blackface is considered such an obvious taboo in USA that it's not really talked about anymore, and when other countries have very limited history with it, of course there's people who would not be aware of it.

The way I see it is that you can color your skin unnatural colors (for things like aliens or trolls etc) because it’s a part of a costume, whereas a natural real life skin color is just “this character is a human.” If you feel the need to color your skin to cosplay a character like that you’re sort of saying that you see the skin color to be just as fantastical as an alien’s or whatever.

People who whine about white people cosplaying black characters are either idiot teens who misguidedly want to make difference in the world or very disingenious people.
Usually you can tell the two apart and it's easy to disregard disingenious people, but the teens are an actual problem, as can be seen from artists and writers who have been harassed to no end due to them daring to produce content containing fetishes or pairings that some people might object to.

This argument has been going on for ages. I'm going to say the same shit I said back when brown facing was brought up in 2011. Smearing brown makeup on yourself not only looks like you smeared shit all over yourself but it gets you a lot of hate too. If you are so intent on cosplaying a brown person despite the thousands of other pale skin options and feel the need to change your skin for it... just tan. Anyone who uses brown face paint at this point is most likely aware of the social repercussions, and if not they deserve to get shit on anyway because it just looks bad.

I am in awe of the idiots screeching ~muh accuracy~ as if these cosplays aren't shit-tier, even without the controversial, dick-move body paint.

Anyone with skill can create a successful and recognizable cosplay of a character with a different racial background than their own !without! altering skin color.
it always looks awful and is an insensitive thing to do. don't interact with the online community if you insist on doing things to royally slight its members. feel free to practice blackface in your home or with your small local group of outcasts, but don't expect the international community to be a homogeneous support if you share that garbage.

I always wonder about the people shouting about how this is unfair. like, do you have friends? does your family like you and communicate with you often? do you have a job at which you're forced to work with and alongside others?
You can't do whatever you feel like or think of, expecting to not get any backlash or consequences.
It's something you learn growing up, unless you're a fucking adult baby.

If we go on a similar issue, how do we deal with character without specific race/etnicities?Those two character are italian and there as been drama because a mexican and japanese cosplayer darken they skin for the blond character. A lot of people claimed it was brown/race/black facing. Comming from the author the tan skin is mostly to have contrasting color palette for the duo, since character of other ethnicities with background linked to that had appeared in the same manga . And the same go with a lot of anime where dark skined character appears without being human or non white. How do a light skin cosplayer should deal with this, especially when it's a key element of the charadesign ?

Your irrational sensitivities to seeing makeup on someone's face is not a valid argument. We live in a time where some people actually believe making an "ok" symbol with your hand is a sign of white supremacy. Just because you're an idiot doesn't mean we're all obligated to oblige your idiocy.

Can you actually come up with a decent counterargument to the point, or are you just going to call everyone idiots and obsess over some random person using the word "POC"?
You can avoid American problems by avoiding American venues. Why be so entitled as to think you should be able to use a platform while disrespecting its owner's rules, norms and values?
Do you go to Japanese forums and shitpost loudly because you don't know or care about their rules or etiquette, then start a huge fuss when you obviously get banned for poor conduct?

In all honesty, this kind of thing is probably why 2ch bans non-Japanese IPs once and for all. For every foreign user who will be respectful and a good poster, there are still a few who give no fucks and will screech into eternity when they can't circumvent rules and/or be disrespectful to Japanese culture freely because they're gaijin (which makes them innocent and can-do-no-wrong, I guess).

Americans are a bit more open-minded since it's a melting pot of a country, but they also have their own values. That cosplayer learned, and so have others who may just be finding out about this. Maybe they'll unban her if she tells them she truly meant no harm and didn't know what blackface is, but either way, there are other sites she can use.

I'd be fine with it if they were American values and she was violating those, but those aren't the values coming through here. American values produce Trump. Only a subset of American moral scolds subscribe to bullshit like "POC", reparations, cultural appropriaton, blackface, MUH BIGOTRY etc. ad nauseam, they're just loud. If you ask some rando in Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, whatever, he won't give a fuck about blackface, and doesn't think that makes him a bigot.

>> No.10152452

There's obviously more than one face to America, and clearly, the face that you seem to dislike is the one in charge of important, large platforms like Twitch.
You can't actually say which one is "real" America, especially if you yourself aren't American.
To expand the Japan comparison, there are Japanese nationalists who despise Korean immigrants and all non-Japanese people in general and want them out of their country and away from their sites, versus Japanese people who don't give a fuck and accept Korean people, and even find other cultures cool or interesting. One will ban you for whiteknighting Koreans or just being a filthy gaijin, while the other will ban you for excessive racebaiting or maybe even for being insensitive or racist to Koreans or other cultures in general. You can't call one "true Japanese" and the other "fake" or irrelevant just because you disagree with it.
In the future, maybe just pay attention to both sides (or the culture as a whole), read the air and avoid stepping on toes if you want to use American platforms. It's not hard, they shove their news and issues everywhere down people's throats.

>> No.10152460

>>10152452
Social media platforms are not the "face of America". They're private corporations acting in their best interest and reputation, which rarely has anything to do with what is right.

Statistically, only 11% of Americans consider themselves to have progressive values and in this case, only a handful of individuals were "offended" by this cosplay. So it's less a matter of social standards and more a matter of a vocal minority making a big enough stink to get their way. Which is usually the case when it comes to this shit.

It is also a waste of time trying to be politically correct on social media. What one considers "offensive" changes literally day by day and usually correlates less with genuine offensive and more with power. ie people dreaming up ways to get others to do things through shame and fake outrage.

In the meantime, it would be appreciated if you stop pretending progressivism is the "face of America." Most Americans would rather you just shut the fuck up.

Using makeup to add blushes, hide moles, zits, etc. is okay.
Using makeup to change your skin color is also okay when only fictional characters have it (Mystique from x-men, Interstella 5555 etc)
Using makeup to change your skin color to something real people have is not okay.

My best guess as to why, is that races are different, and any acknowledgement of this makes stupid people uncomfortable.

Go ahead and do it yourself then. As if you have no concept of social reinforcement. You're right in a way. That girl has the right to cosplay however she wants to. And everybody else will react accordingly. How did they react? Serious question here. What if a country never even used blacks for slaves? And will never go to America anyway. Is it still racist? What if the person doing that is also not American and just genuinely thinks black skin is beautiful, tans herself and use dark make up, isnt that a change in standards and actually conplimenting the skin color?
And if it is still racist, as a foreigner, it is confusing because a lot of black people love and hype up ariana when she's obviously a blackface. But black people themselves defend her? So it's not blackface when a person's pretty?

When someone uses a fucking foundation color for a fictional character and the cosplayer initially isnt even American, doesnt have history of black slavery and actually likes a very tanned complexion (because of the sun, shows youre well traveled and looks healthy), he or she will have a growing resentment towards black people if they started calling her racist.

Careless accusations will only breed more racism in places it was initially absent
