How do I do Houseki no Kuni wigs? I'm trying to do the thing with gift plastic/cellophane/whatever but the strips keep awkwardly curling and bending in odd directions and I can't get them to lie properly. Can I use a hair dryer or heat gun on them to get them to behave? Looking for any suggestions.

You can use any kind of heat source within moderation. Practice on some loose strips before frying your whole wig.

But really it's just physics of almost any plastic. You heat it to slightly upset the plastic in itself, get it to the new position you want, and then cool it to set the change. The cooling step is not skippable!

If you apply too much heat it will become frizzy, lumpy and ugly. I suggest you try frying some of it on purpose just so you know how it looks.

Thank you, anon. I think it's pretty clear I've never had to work with plastic before. One other question- Is it okay to just let it cool in place by itself (with a way to keep it in place), or is it better to use an ice cube on it to cool it more quickly? Curly wig arrived a tangled mess. I want to straighten and dye it by using hot water (cheap synthetic non-heat-resistant wig), do I have to untagle it before doing that or can I just dump it into water & detangle it once it's straight?

If you've got a bit of pudge they hold it in. I'd normally wear stomach smoothing underwear, but if I've got the tights I'd just go with tights.
And they smooth out all the lumps on your thighs too.

When working with thermoplastics I feel that the best way to both shape things and let them cool is to press them against a surface that has the shape you want them to hold. For your application I would cut out marquise-shaped pieces and press them against a sphere, like a ball or something, and heat them up in trials starting with lower temperatures until they hold the shape.

Same anon, realised I probably should've done some research first before asking. Anyway, I've settled on making them out of EVA foam, ordered the materials and I guess just going to wing it and make the best I can.

Anybody got any tips making gloves/boots out of foam? I'm thinking just making sort of sleeves for the top part of the boots, then putting the claws over some regular dark shoes. No clue how I'm going to do the gauntlets though.

With gloves you usually want to have a fabric base that fits you and then glue the foam pieces to that. Check out Lindy Design Lab on youtube, she has a bunch of videos on making gauntlets.

Right, they're more like forearm covers that have a sort of 'dragon's mouth' opening at the end. I'm not sure I'll be able to get the shape just right, so I might alter the design a little, so long as it looks decent I'm not too worried.

I want to cosplay Pop Step from my hero academia: vigilantes in her school uniform (I'm not confident showing as much skin as her vigilante costume shows lol). Next, go to the website of a drugstore of your choosing (Target, Ulta, CVS, Wallgreens, etc.) and go to each piece of makeup listed. Select "Best Rated / Most Popular" etc. or least expensive and take a look at the ratings. You can individually search the ratings of each product, watch a youtube video, or wing it. If you just need the basics, anything that won't kill you will be fine. Keep in mind your skin type and shade. Some products will be listed as for oily or dry skin. If you don't know your shade, head into Sephora, or MAC for help. You can google a comparison of shades between products (ex: What's my MAC 420 shade in Revlon's colorstay foundation?).

What's the best way to ensure a top like this doesn't uh... fall down? The only foolproof way I know is an elastic band above the boobs, but I don't want to sacrifice the shape.

You can use double-sided fashion tape to stick it to your skin to ensure it stays up, or add clear elastic straps over the shoulders.

You can usually apply multiple layers of window tint to clear plastic to change their color for the effect you want. I've done it with black and purple, but never white, but I dont see why it wouldnt work here too.

Basically, you will wipe down the lens with soapy water (to keep the glue from sticking immediately). Put a segment of window tint film over the lens, and position it so it covers the whole lens. Use your fingers to push out any air bubbles. Dab away the excess moisture with a towel and Let it dry (you may need to keep up pressure as it does so). As the soapy water dries up, the glue in the film will activate and stick in place. Then you use a hobby knife to cut away the parts that exceed the lens and smooth down the edges.

You'll have to do this multiple times to build up the white, and ideally you want at least one layer on the inside of the lens as well. But the end result will be something you can see through and will prevent your face from showing.

Add boning to it so it doesn’t scrunch up, and a lace up back will keep it as taut as possible. You can add that clear ‘non slip’ rubber stuff they have on bikinis to the edges.

Heads up any sort of fashion tape is an ass to remove and will leave residue if you don’t take it off immediately after wearing.

Oh in addition, you don’t have to add a lace-up back, but basically anything in terms of horizontal + vertical support is going to keep the top from shifting on your body. Lace up backs are the most straightforward approach to horizontal support imo, especially for a top that doesn’t reach the waist, but you can also add a strong elastic panel with hooks and eyes (can do this on the inside and add zipper to hide if you’d like) similar to how a bra is structured.
You could also integrate a strapless bra into the top by adding loops on the inside to feed it through, which might be enough to support it and keep it from shifting. (can baste it or add some snaps if it’s still finicky)

Look at the size chart — it’s mostly based on height. Ballet dancers are a lot tinier than most people so the sizing gets shifted. If it arrives and just the waistband feels too tight, you can snip a small cut into the elastic (that’s what ballet dancers do, it won’t rip unless it’s way too small)

I just require some advice on a couple of things for a Muramasa cosplay that I'm planning to do next month.

What would be best to use for the belt straps around the thighs? Should I just try using small-sized belts that fit around the circumference of my thighs?

Have any of you used Jacquard iDye Poly dye before? I just used some to dye a wig and even though I rinsed it for several minutes it still stinks horribly. I'm letting it dry currently and I'll try washing it with some nice smelling fabric softener later but I'd appreciate any other tips on getting rid of the smell.

So, I've got a Gunbuster costume mostly planned out, but there is one sticking point for it that is keeping me from pulling the trigger on starting it built it.

Specifically, I have no fucking idea how I am supposed to get through doors with those massive things on my shoulders. Especially if everything goes according to plan and in-costume I'm about 7-8 ft tall, but even without platforms and such those shoulders are ridiculous.

I imagine that other big costumes or things with wings have a similar problem. What can I do to make getting through doors not require breaking down my costume or having a team of people follow me around as a pit crew?

I've made a couple of large wings before and the only solution I've found so far is to make my wings easy to assemble and reassemble when needed so that I can wear them for photoshoots and then take them off while walking around. This means lots of snap buttons and velcro.
I'd suggest looking for videos of cosplayers assembling their armor or showing how their armor is attached, KamuiCosplay is one I know of.

As for the hat, the pattern reminds me of those floppy hats that trappers, aviators, etc. wear. You could find a pattern to use that way. If you're trying to alter an existing hat though, I don't have an answer for you.

I cut the eye hole on my Spider-Man suit too far on my left side and need help

Buy a clip-on ponytail/extension and cut/style it to the proper size. Since wefts open downwards in long wigs it makes drawing up hair stupid hard. The only other way I can think of would be sewing in extra weft segments on the back facing upwards.

There's a 1,001 tips I could give you, but the most helpful tip that you can ever use is: do your research. You need to know how to research well in every aspect of the cosplay process and to understand convention conduct. Stockpile resources (like cosplaytutorial.com!). Utilize youtube for the fantastic resource that it is! Cross-reference tips/tutorials, sellers, items, etc. You don't need a tutorial tailored to your specific costume or circumstance in order for it to be helpful.

I can't stress youtube enough. There's HOURS worth of content on their answering your question for first time cosplayers by several different experienced cosplayers. Learn it, love it, live it.

It's a postapocalyptic fest at an abandoned missile silo with actual Mad Max-style custom cars and stuff. I'm considering PVC and foam, but they seem like an inferior option that might not stand up to the test of 3-day fest.
I think I'll do the first pass with PVC and if I'm not happy with the sturdiness go with metal.

You can definitely do plastidip only and skip the pva, it doesn't crack or peel but once it's on you can't sand it so plan accordingly. I recommend heat sealing the foam first by just giving it a once over with your heat gun, it will close the pores of the foam and make it smoother, and also the foam won't soak up the plastidip as much so you'll need to put less of it on

hey guys; i'd like some help if possible.

so i've been having this issue for a while now: EVERY wig i've worn has been incredibly itchy/irritating, but only on the hairline. i initially thought it had something to do with a prior dandruff problem, but turns out this isnt the case. i've tried a handful of methods such as washing the wig with apple cider vinegar, using tea tree oil, and wetting my hair and/or the wig cap itself. i dont believe its the quality of the wigs either, as i mainly buy from arda (though i have used cheap ebay wigs before, so i know its not an issue with JUST their products).

i'm just angry more than anything. i keep having to take off my wigs after an hour or two when everything else is otherwise comfortable. does anyone have suggestions for this? i use pretty basic wig caps, so i'm starting to think that that might be the problem.

Listen to me before you make a horrible mistake. You are on the right track, but you are using the wrong tool for the job.

You want caulk. Like kwikseal or something like that, its super cheap. It fills in gaps and joins like nothing, and when you spray the plastidip on top of it you can't tell its there. You can even use caulk on top of plastidip, because they have a similar texture so it doesn't look like an obvious patch job.

Look up a video about it for tips and tricks, like using water to smooth out the caulk. Using caulk for this will really make a ton of little imperfections in your work outright disappear.

Have you tried a wig grip? I think Arda and beauty supply stores carry them. They're made of a soft material so maybe it would be a better barrier between wig and hairline without sacrificing it staying in place.

Anyone have experience with finishing edges on large, weirdly shaped pieces of fabric? It's not synthetic and a fairly thick material so heat won't work.
I have to make a bunch of big fabric petals somewhat visible from both sides and I wanted to know if there's a better option than fray check, which seems fairly pricey and only comes in tiny bottles. The fabric is dark purple if that makes a difference.

A lot of wigs (especially Arda) may come with tiny fibers on the hairline that are teased to add volume without bulk. If the wig is heat resistant, try smoothing those fibers to see if it helps. Arda also posted a quick tutorial about this issue: https://youtu.be/Rry0Vd3UphA

Hope this helps! Wig grips like other anon mentioned is also a good idea, or maybe wearing one of those soft stretchy jersey headbands (the ones you can get at any store) to protect your skin from the hairline if you can position the wig to hide it.

Maybe try using Pellon Clear-fuse? It's fusible interfacing that's relatively clear. There's also cheaper alternatives to fray check like Aleene's Stop Fraying ($6 for 4 oz).
I'm not sure if I'd recommend nail polish or topcoat since they can yellow over time.

What I would do here is get the right color sweater in a size a bit larger and longer than mine, cut along the diagonal line, sew it back together where it's closed while leaving a good inch of allowance, then topstitch the allowance folded on either side. It would make a clean hole with relatively little effort. You may have to take it in a bit to get a tight fit on the rest of the sweater.

Anyone have a good pattern that would need minimal modifications to for a fitted gakuran on a woman?
I am newish to sewing and this would be my first blazer so I want to keep structural mods to a minimum.
Ideally I want a woman's patterns since hers is fitted to her curves.

What is the general rule of thumb of converting women's shoe size to men's? This perfect shoe that I am looking for only comes in women's sizes.

You could try using the pattern on the left and cropping it to be jacket length instead of a dress. Just fyi, you will have to make pattern adjustments no matter which pattern you use if you want the jacket to hug your curves. You also won’t be able to achieve anime level super tightly fitted jacket without sacrificing mobility.

I have a little bit of a weird situation. I ordered something from China that I was a little sketchy about (they didn't send me a confirmation email or a tracking number). You'll probably need something at the SFX level of hold. Try researching what those artists use. It might not be a bad idea to double up in setting powder and spray. In addition, make sure to use a good primer. You can look to the makeup community for that one.

Depending on the area you need to cover (face vs. body), PAX might be a good option. It's a mixture of pros-aide adhesive and acrylic paint (Liquitex is usually the standard), and is basically a layer of adhesive on top of your skin mixed with pigment, so it is very long-wearing and transfer-resistant. The only thing is that I'm not really sure how it behaves with a lot of sweat, so if you go this route, do a patch test to see how it feels/holds up (and also to see if you're allergic to it/the acrylic paint). It's also a real bitch to remove, so make sure you get a good remover and plan other cosplays accordingly (say, in case you can't get all of it off). I would also definitely use normal face/body paint on your face for that same removal reason.

2 questions:

1) How in the heck do I source out fabric online?
I'm trying to find myself some swimwear fabric (4way stretch, 80% nylon, 20% spandex), but I can't find the correct color for the life of me.
I order samples and they are never even close to what I am looking for.

PAX anon here, I personally don’t mind using PAX, but it is a pretty involved application and removal process. Look into tutorials (Cosplay.com and SFXWiki both have good info) to see if it’s something you are up to doing. If it is, like I said before, I would use the Mehron for your face and purchase pros-aide + remover and an acrylic shade that matches the color of the Mehron for the PAX body paint.

I need to figure out why the thick thread in my Dad's sowing machine keeps snapping. The tension is high enough, but the thread keeps getting stuck in the tension discs just before it gets back up and then down to the needle. If I lower the tension it starts bunching from underneath the stitch, which, from what I read is a result of the pressure from the top of the machine being too low.
I put this question here because I honestly have no idea where else I can ask and the manual the machine comes with is pretty useless. It's a pretty old sowing machine too. A Frister and Rossmann Model 45 Mark 1.
We had it working with thinner thread but the thick one just keeps snapping and it's frustrating as all hell.

Could anyone help me identify these dungarees? It says "Atoll" on the side and on a tag in the front but I'm not finding any brand or anything remotely similar. The cosplayer either hasn't replied to inquiries on where she got them or just says she'll check the tag but doesn't follow up.

You shouldn't have to rip the seams if you can blend the stitch line in with the original seam. Put the shirt on inside out, pull the areas taught to your body where it want it shortened and pin. Then with chalk, a bar of soap, or disappearing fabric marker, make a line of where the pins were. Sew on that line and connect it to the armpit seam. Then just cut away the excess fabric and finish the edge. No seam ripping should be necessary, but if that method doesn't work then you might have to.

That being said, why do you feel like a stretch stitch is only a one-time-use/costume use deal? Were you not using a ballpoint needle and getting a lot of running along your knit? Professional quality is a very nebulous term that doesn't really mean anything - if you mean comparable to manufactured/factory sewn swimwear, well that doesn't necessarily mean durable especially in the fast fashion era.

Been reading a lot of mom blogs that swear on using sergers for everday use stuff because regular sewing machines just don't cut it.

Now the next question is, how do you mix dyes to get custom colours? I've never even mixed paints let alone dyes. My idea is to get several small pots with different dye ratios of pink/orange mixed, then see which one will yield a color closest to the top I'm trying to match.

Athletic tape. Can find it by bandaids in any store. Peels off without hurting and is pretty good as a bandage. can rough it up a bit if you need it to look worn too. Depending on what the bandages look like some ribbon can work as well but unless that covers a large area its difficult to get it to stick.

If you're ok with something labor intensive, my suggestion would be to make the rectangles into individual panels and then sew them together to make the whole vest.

The process of making the rectangles would go something like this:
>find approximate rectangle width and height
>cut out a rectangle + seam allowance out of lining fabric and fashion fabric
>mark out rectangle outline on each piece of fabric
>cut out a piece of batting the size of the rectangle
>pin lining, batting, and fashion fabric together and stitch together along the outside edges of the rectangle
>once the fabric sandwich is sewn, topstitch the pattern on top of the whole thing

As for patterning the vest, the only way to make a pattern is to draft it on yourself. Make the rectangles and sew them + the back of the vest to make a whole vest and then pin it against your body so that it fits how you want it to. Then draw in the lines for where the alterations need to be and base your final pattern on that mockup.

Alright, after some research, I have found various products being sold, and this one seems like it is what I'm going for. Can anyone verify the quality? I'm wanting to find a way to wear a large sword on my back for a con, but have the mount/whatever hidden. The sword is a bit unwieldy (~4ft long) and wider than regular (about two palms wide), so I can't use a regular scabbard or sheath of any kind. Quick question, the goal is to make a simple breastplate, something like this, without the lower segments. Maybe with a central ridge. The purpose is LARP rather than cosplay and it's probably intended to wear with a dress. What material should I use. I've got a few PVC pipes that can be flattened into sheets of different gauge- 2mm to 5mm, I've got EVA mats and I can purchase something called Gutta, it's PCV foam, I assume it's another name for Sintra.

Miccocostumes is a trusted site with good stuff. The photos are pretty accurate to the quality you will get. I can't speak on the wig quality, but it looks like it is thin without much volume. I say if you have the budget for it, get a wig. I honestly can’t picture any situation where a normal head of hair with black strips of fabric hanging down looks better compared to an actual wig.

Personally, when it comes to super long wigs I tend to purchase a slightly shorter style that still suits the character (i.e. down to the waist or butt for a character with hair to their shins). I find that it still maintains the overall aesthetic of the costume without all the nightmare of a wig that is THAT long. Tangling is still inevitable with long wigs of course, but I’ve found the process of detangling a lot easier when you pre-treat your wigs with Motions Oil Sheen Spray or silicone spray lubricant.

I'm cosplaying as a character that has a relatively simple design but I need help with her logo. I have a lycra bodysuit and I found the character's logo online, had it transferred to an iron on sheet and ironed it onto the bodysuit. acrylic will also crack, some fabric paints won't crack if the layers are thin enough but an appliqué will always be your best bet. You can just make your logo out of lycra and sew along the edge with a satin stitch, it shouldn't take too long.

Here is what you do.

Get some thin craft foam, the common 2 mm paper sized sheet stuff. Then you do this:

Cut out a circle that is the size of the full button. This is your base.

Then cut out another circle about 1/3rd the size. Glue that in the middle of the first.

Then glue the whole thing 'face down' in the middle of your remaining foam, so that the whole thing is covered, and cut from the back outwards to trin the thing to being circular again.

This will create a round shape with a slight outward bulge.

For detailing, you can make a new small circle and glue that onto the outside for the 'cap'.

For the little dots around the middle, use very small googly eyes.

For the ring along the outside, you can cut a long thing strip of foam and loop it around the perimiter of the button, joining the ends together for a firm fit. This will also hide any rough cuts from step three above.

Seal, prime, and paint the whole thing gold. I'd recommend making the other three buttons as simple foam circles painted the same way for visual consistency.

With how popular 3D printers are, I assume at least someone here has seen or heard of people using them for cosplays. Anyone know of a way to fasten together long objects like maces or staffs, etc. that are mostly 3D printed? I don't want to use PVC or some other kind of tubing because they generally feel like shit and are super bendy, but I also don't want to carve the things out of wood. I actually tried the magnets route, didn't work as well as I had hoped. It held together okay, but as soon as I tilted it the whole thing kind of started flopping about and disassembled itself. Black is a better base coat if you're painting over it with metallic paint IMO, but nah, it doesn't actually matter which you use if you're painting on top of it. I think you see a lot of black because it tends be more widely available. It also comes in a lot more colors, which is worth checking out because unless you need a very specific shade because it's really nice to hit it with the plastidip and be done.

It only makes a difference based on the coat of paint you intend to use.
A light coat of paint can show up darker or lighter depending on whether you use black or white plastidip.
Just go with white if that's what you have/prefer. I really don't see why there would be any issues with using it, it's just a primer afterall.

Arda Wigs' Marty. It's by no means a cheap wig but it doesn't require much styling to get Kaiki's hairstyle. If you don't want to use a Marty, I suggest looking up wig walkthroughs/tutorials for characters with spikey, slicked back hair like Zack Fair or Phoenix Wright and then adapting those techniques to suit your needs.

Arda and Epic are good places to buy wigs. 16" is about shoulder length on most people. You can just buy a wavy wig. The "split" at the sides are actually just hair that are tied up in twintails so you can do that and then sew additional wefts to cover up the exposed tracks or buy those clip-on pigtails.

Fishing line is going to be very uncomfortable, I recommend using a strap at least 2cm wide or so, or else it's going to dig into your skin.

I woke up in the middle of the night with this idea for poseable Entrapta hair and am curious if it's feasible.

1) Case heavy-gauge wire in fabric boning-style (so it can be glued to things more easily).
2) Shave a pool noodle with a hole in the middle down at one tip.
3) Stick the cased wire down the hole in the pool noodle. Wrap the wire around the ends and glue it down at the tips.
4) Stick magnets at the tips of the pool noodles. Stick more magnets in light items to be "held" by hair.
5) Wrap hair around noodle, secure with flexible glue.
6) Stick a large screw casing into the top of the bun. Drill a hole in a hefty headband. Before wearing, stick under wig, screw nail through headband and wig into casing.

Will this give me pigtails that can be bent into shapes and hold those shapes?

Regardless of your filler, the way that the hair is applied and styled is going to make or break the build. It always comes down to the final look and surprisingly that is where many people fail. PLEASE use wefts instead of putting two wigs on there. Or at least harvest the wefts from a wig.

As for the headband + screw idea, make sure to add a foam base where the screws would be sticking into the tails. The peak of the ponytails needs more support to achieve that anime look. Stick it on top of the noodle like an ice cream cone if that helps visualize it. Otherwise the headband + screw is a sound idea. Look up some tutorials on Tavros from Homestuck horn attachment tutorials if you need some help.

I'm planning to make this mask from EVA foam finished with bondo and I'm unsure how to approach the eyeholes. My current plan is to do the bondo first then do a sort of jack-o-lantern approach, drill holes along an outline then cut through them. I've worked with eva foam sheets before to good effect, but in this case the piece is big enough that would result in the completed version being hollow, which seems weak.

Go at the first sign of trouble or every few hours.

If the fabric you're using for this project is synthetic and you haven't cut into it already, you could try cutting the fabric with a hot knife. This melts the edges slightly and seals them to prevent fraying.

You can save that piece, I think. Use caulk to fill in the seam, using water to smooth out the surface. That will fill in all of the gaps you see there, and will create what appears to be a smooth surface.

It might not look perfect if there are any weird bulges in your join, but it will save 90% of your work there.

For reference, I never use hot glue. It has a tendency to melt foam, and on a hot summer day your glue will weaken (the whole point of hot glue is that it gets soft with heat) and as a result is more likely to come apart in hot weather. Which is NOT something you want to happen to your costume after you put so much work into it.

I use superglue for almost everything. Occasionally, for pieces that need to stick IMMEDIATELY because I can't afford to hold it in place long enough for the glue to cure/its a loadbearing piece that will take some weight, I use contact cement. But not hot glue.

I have really nasty and scarred up legs so I always wear dance tights when I cosplay characters with bare legs. The character I want to do wears sandals though so I’m not sure what to do.
Putting concealer on my legs doesn’t work too well because the scars have a weird texture to them. Should I just wear tights with sandals?

If you wanna try salvage the piece, try using some acrylic caulk. Fill in all the gaps with it, and with a wet finger, smooth it all out and feather out the seam, then let it dry/cure. Acrylic caulk is good because it allows the seam to remain flexible. However, once you apply it, you can't really sand it, which is why it's critical to smooth it all out with a wet finger as I described.
I tend to use acrylic caulk on any of my EVA foam projects to cover up seams, patch up imperfections, etc.
Honestly if it were me, I would just redo the part. I would ditch the hotglue seam welding altogether too.

CONTACT CEMENT

If done right, the foam will rip before the seam does. The stuff is meant to be very durable and flexible, you can't go wrong with it. Look for LePage, Barge, or any other similar brand. I use the stuff for 99% of my EVA welding.
Otherwise for heavy duty applications that will bear a lot of weight/stress (shoes or boots for example), I use Shoe Goo, Goop, or whatever shoe adhesive variant you might find.
Just go to your local hardware supply store (think the big one is B&Q in the UK if I'm not mistaken?), they should have stuff like I've mentioned.
Only time I use hot glue is for adding details and decorations. Even then, I try stick with contact cement. I never use the hotglue for welding seams together or anything that will take on any amount of stress.
