This is my first foam project so this might be a stupid question, but can a hot knife cut through foam that has been glued together with contact cement? (tried searching but didn't find anything.) I'm making Antarc's ice saw and was hoping that I could cut out two foam rectangles, glue them together, then cut out the teeth. I figured this would be easier than cutting the teeth out on each piece of foam and trying and line them up while gluing them together.

Hey guys I posted a couple threads ago with my madoka cosplay and here’s the update, I finished all of the sewing except for the bows on the sides of the dress and the wig, does anyone have advice of how to make them look nice?

Posted in the last thread about potentially making a Maya Fey costume. I picked up a pattern the other day and all the recommended fabrics are silk or satin fabrics, and Maya's dress doesn't have a traditional, silky kimono look to it. Would a cotton blend be a safe bet for something like this or is there another fabric type that might work better?

Thanks anon! I think I goofed though. The blade bends/curves down when I hold it up horizontally ( I used a steel rod between the foam layers). Is there any way to make it more stable (will worbla or plasti dip help?) or do I need to start all over?

if the pieces are already glued together and it's not as stable as you want it, then i would suggest starting over because it needs a better foundation to begin with. that being said, i do recommend using plasti-dip on all foam-based projects because it'll give you a nicer finish for painting, not for stability tho.
if you used a steel rod as a a base, make sure that rod goes all the way down to the handle--as in you're holding the rod when properly holding the blade--if it bends, then you might need a stronger rod.

what type of foam are you using? how thick? i ask because thicker foam in combination with a nice dowel will give you a sturdy prop.

I'm planning on cosplaying Kaiman from the manga Dorohedoro and was wondering what the closest example of a real gas mask this is

Any ideas on how to make the lenses on the mask? I figured i'd resin cast them, but I don't want them to be solid so I can still see out of them moderately well. Would pressing two of the same mold together work to create a hollowed dome shape? Or would slushing work better? I've never tried either before so I have no clue.

Does anyone have any experience with magnets and attaching them to wigs? Trying to figure out how to keep this crown piece on my head, the front of the wig doesn't really give me space to clip anything into the wig and keep it secure so I figured magnets would be my best bet for keeping this on my head?

I definitely have the tools to make something like this, but just out of curiosity, does it have to be vaccumed? Could you just rest heated thermoplastic over the mold and let gravity do the rest? Or use gloved hands to smooth out the plastic around the mold?

probably an incredibly easy answer to this one, but whenever i put wigs on (that look fine on the wighead) they're so incredibly thick it looks ridiculous.

i get my wigs from arda/epiccosplay (on very small occasion), i have short hair that's easy to get under a wigcap, and i don't think i have an especially small head, so why do my wigs always come up like two inches off of my scalp? is there something i can do to prevent this? are some wigs just like that?

Working on a Bondrewd cosplay currently (minus the tail, too much work and he's seen without it on several occasions)
I've never done any helmets before, so I'm unsure how to go about it at all. I was suggested by a friend I'd probably need to use tinted plastic for the face mask but I wanted some additional input from other people that are a little more experienced.

What are you going to be wearing? I would very very much NOT suggest wearing sticky bras in hot weather, your concern that they'll just sweat off is very realistic. A plunge bra would probably be better if you aren't doing something backless and can have straps. I've heard of people thinking of using fashion tape for these things, but I can't see that working very well for an entire day.

Anyone know a good place for a styled wig? I really have no time until the con, and my wig styling ability is fucking garbage as is. I need KH Terra wig, xeonort style or regular. I'd commission but there's fucking no one in my area.

Yes you have to vaccum it, and it works for small parts with a home vaccum. Using hands or gravity will result in an uneven thickness or the plastic not sticking everywhere. You can maybe press it with a second mould.

Is it because the wig is too big or too thick? If the base of the wig isn’t sitting flush with your head then it’s just because the wig is too big. You need to buy smaller wigs, so look for Asian wigs because those run smaller.
If it’s because there’s too much fiber (so it’s actually too thick), then your best best is to go at with some thinning shears. Arda wigs are infamously thick.

I actually made the helmet a few days ago for my uni's prom, though I had to rush the work since I started making it a bit too late and did it in about a week, it was also my first time doing a helmet.

For the helmet main part I did this :
1) CATIA model that I exported to STL format
2) Papercraft with peparuka
3) Glass Fibered it 3 time inside
4) Applied putty on the outside 1 rought, 1 finish (should have done more tho) then sanding
5) Sprayed it with primer then painted

For the tranparent parts I casted epoxy in papercraft moulds, the result is somewhat shit but with sanding up to 5000 I could somewhat see. Then for the seemingly opaque visors I applied a one-way black tinted mirror film (I only had this at the time, I would recommend using car film, it bends better with heat).

Then I hotglued everything and added a flexible neon.

I plan to make a full cosplay with a new helmet made right this time during summer.

Big loose curlers, then steam it. Brush it out with a wire wig brush. The curlers should be 1 inch in diameter, and you want to arrange them so they’re running long sides up and down, not horizontal like a bricklaying pattern.

I'll be wearing a bunny suit with a sorta low back, but it does have clear straps. I was also thinking about wearing a padded strapless bra to help fill out the suit more, but I needed something to push them more together to create more cleavage. The suit itself isn't very low cut, but I'm so flat it looks really unflattering on me without a lot of extra padding.

I'll keep looking into some other bras that might work! If nothing works out I might just drop the cosplay and wear my other crossplay instead.

Thanks for the help, though! I'll check out some plunge bras to see if they'd work. I'll probably end up switching out some of my bras with clear straps and seeing if they work out. At this point I'm not too worried about the back showing too much, the wig should cover it.

Get a strapless wonderbra and a low back converter, it's very plunge itself, but you can wear it a cm or two low if needed. You can sew extra padding to the inside of the wonderbra cup if needed.
Because the wonderbra has such a good fit you can wear one of the clip ons under it too as it holds it in place even if they start to peel away.
make sure you scoop all your boob into the bra for maximum effect, as thats what the stick on clip bras do, just pull in whats at the side.

What sort of fabric? Cotton is simply what a fabric can be made from and it doesn't tell me if you used cotton lawn vs. cotton drill. Where do I go to find or commission a quality cosplay super suit for someone with unusual proportions. I'm planning on cosplaying All Might at Youmacon this November and I'm not really sure where to start...

My biggest issue is that I am ALL MIGHT SIZED. I'm 6'8" & 285 lbs (muscle, not fat, I'm a weightlifter). The only other cosplay I've done was of Elias Ainsworth and I got an inexpensive cosplay from Ali Express (it...kinda worked...I was less muscular then and still needed to sub out my own pants).

I'm very worried about measurements. If I want a big enough chest and arms (48" and 37") I need an XXL but that leaves me with WAY too much room around my waist, which is relatively trim at just 34". I also have a crazy long 36" inseam that is impossible to accommodate. Its kind of ironic, really, that I have true-to-life All Might measurements and the only readily available costumes are for people shorter, skinnier, or bigger around the waist than I am. I am a physical anomaly in that I am built exactly like the character I plan to cosplay.

I'll need a standard super suit and a varsity jacket from the Two Heroes movie would be amazing but I'm not finding anything available online...

I have 7 months. I have enormous respect for tailors and craftsmen that work on these but I have neither the time, the expertise, or access to tools to do this myself. I do, however, have money...I make plenty of $$ and am willing to throw some cash down to make this happen, I just don't know where to turn. I've done some googling but have only confused myself even further.

I live in the UK and am making an EVA foam prop with lots of curves, but it seems every contact adhesive I use isn't instant enough, so the seams immediately split or the hold comes apart with any flexing at all, this is after it's been heat formed and shaped too

I've been using Gorilla Glue Contact Adhesive, but i'm eyeing up the Evo Stik 528 as a better alternative. Any experience?

If you're looking at just lycra suits that are printed with dye-sub then you'll just buy the pattern and ask a website like rpcstudios/heros-time to print and sew the costume, and they'll do it by the exact measurements you give them
If you can't find a pattern of the suit online (check places like 4neodesigns/gunhead/ect.) then get in contact with someone who does commissions for patterns (most of the people who run dye-sub pattern websites are open to commissions), they're usually around ~$50, just remember that having another studio print and sew the suit will take around 4 weeks, so don't comission someone who will take 7 months to make the pattern, give yourself wiggle room.
As for the jacket, most varsity jackets really aren't difficult to sew, and it would be a fun way to invest some of your own time into the costume and get you familiar with sewing. I honestly think it would be better to invest some of your money into the equipment used to start sewing as opposed to commissioning everything, but if you're really against it then just start looking through ig, it won't take long to find someone you can commission to do a varsity jacket.

I made a Bondrewd helmet for a costume just earlier this year. Here is my advice.

You will be using 5mm craft foam sheets. EVA mat foam is too thick, you will look like a bobblehead.

I used a print-and-use helmet template from Evilted. costs like 2 bucks and the result is a functional and easy to use helmet design. Worth it. This makes the back part of the helmet that actually sits on your head.

I then used a different template for a Face Shield and cut it down to just be the front of the helmet.

I chose to make the bottom half of the faceplate my visor, using PETG plastic sheeting and multiple layers of black window tint film. For the light-up vertical strip I used some of the PETG sheeting with multiple layers of purple window tint, with EL tape beneath it. You want EL tape, not an LED strip, for that constant clean glow effect. You can find sets of EL tape that come with plug-and-play battery packs on amazon for cheap if you are not confident in your electrical skills.

I mounted my faceplate with magnets so it is two pieces, but if you make the helmet as a single and still fit it over your head thats fine too.

Get a black, open faced headsock to cover your neck and stuff.

Everything else you need to know is just general armor cosplay tips. Look up tutorials. A lot of them.

budget friendly fabric suggestions i could get at a local Jo-anns and is adding a tulle layer underskirt a good choice? i'm going to be extending the skirt a little further anyways for some extra con-safety.

her skirt is a little poof so you will need a tulle petti, but not too big. a poof around this size is the best imo its a little bigger than hers but i think it would look cuter. also you said your skirt will be bigger so it will look better

Are there any good fabric stores online that let you order to the half or even quarter yard? I need just a bit of some really specific stuff that's hard to find in regular hobby stores and buying full yards would be a waste.

Foam is light, but durable. 5mm thickness is the sort of thing that will tear if you try to destroy it, but lasts a long time as long as you handle it with care. It does bend and deform as you handle it a bit, but it deforms right back. And a second layer of any material on top (like, say, the second layer of foam to create the raised edge around the rim of the faceplate) does a lot to set a shape. 2mm thickness is probably what you are thinking of, thin sheet almost like paper. That won't hold up at all. 5mm thickness is closer to the thickness of a pencil.

I also seal the outside with a 3 step process that starts with a head gun, then apply two layers of mod podge, and finally spray it with plastidip. The mod podge in particular stiffens the outer layer and helps make it more damage resistant.

This version of the helmet took me two weeks, but it was my second crack at the Bondrewd helmet. My first version was EVA mat foam, making it too stiff and bulky, and took a month to make. It didn't look as good and it hurt my ears to wear it for long periods of time. And the LED strip for the first helmet was not as good looking as the EL tape.

Dyeing is an option. Just make sure to buy the right dye for the type of fabric (ie. synthetic dye for synthetic or blended fabrics). I'd suggest checking for fabric stores in your area first. Some thrift stores and Walmarts even carry fabric (so I hear, none of mine do).

Cleaning: mix wig shampoo and cold water in a basin/tub and wash the wig very gently without rubbing the fibres. Rinse with cold water thoroughly. Dab dry with a towel - don't rub! Finally, let your wig air-dry, preferably on a wig stand.

You're letting it go tacky first before sticking it together, right? Contact adhesive isnt like regular glue where you race to put the pieces together asap. If you just slam those suckers together when it's just gone on, it won't work out for you. I personally like araldite.
Dont be afraid to stick in sewing pins to help hold it together if it's a difficult shape or get clamps. You should be priming your pieces so any tiny holes will get filled later if pins will do the trick in your situation

I bought this dress a while ago for a Princess Luna cosplay. I want to add something black on top because the blue is a bit too bright for my tastes and I've picked out these four capes and boleros as my favorites, but I just can't decide which one of them would work best with the already pretty busy details and cut of the dress. Is it possible to sew foam to a garment, the same way you might topstich vinyl decals? I need the decals on the outfit to be the same colour as on the armour and can’t find vinyl in a good colour. I glued 2mm on a boot cover once and it totally fell apart after a day of use, so i was wondering if anyone has experience sewing foam instead.

I don't see why not. Machine stitches would probably tear foam to shreds though, so you might want to do long, loose hand stitches. Alternatively you can superglue velcro to the wrong side of the foam for something like boot covers.

I'm looking for a site to buy an Ichigo bodysuit, like pic related. Would use zentaizentai, have had satisfactory results from them before, but they don't carry Darling suits. My first cosplay is going to be the not so original Toga from hero academia. The outfit is bought and made some adjustment myself but I never styled a wig before.

I know this is late. My zero two has a plastic piece with magnets that I insert under the wig. The horns then sit on top of the wig. It is really secure. Uses three small magnets. Two on sides and one in the middle.

I'm trying to get my iconic Belmont props finished in the next two weeks, and I've hit an obstacle with the Vampire Killer morningstar. I figured I could take a styrofoam ball, coat the whole thing in Worbla for structure, then mount the spikes with gorilla glue. But now I'm not sure the styrofoam ball is going to survive the Worbla heating process or remain sturdy afterwards even with the plastic coating.

In regards to the spikes, I thought I could take a cast of a cake frosting tip and use epoxy putty to fill the mold repeatedly before mounting them to the foam ball with gorilla glue. But the putty isn't filling in the pointed tip nor getting a clean cast of the sides due to air pockets in the tight conical space.

If someone could suggest a good production method for clean conical spikes - possibly a liquid casting material that wouldn't fuse to my thermoplastic spike mold? - and/or alternatives to a styrofoam ball as the core of a worbla sphere, I'd really appreciate it.

You don't need to have it that complicated. You can make spikes by cutting pies out of metallic pleather and gluing them to newspaper backing for structure, then glue directly to a painted styrofoam ball.

That's pretty much it. Make sure you get the right type of dye, synthetic dyes will best work on synthetics and organic dyes are for organics like cotton. Always do a test scrap with a timer. Stove top method is almost always better than washing machine. Make sure you get a giant metal
or non-plastic-based boiling pot. Do not use that pot for cooking again. Lay down foil or cling wrap on nearby surfaces to prevent accidental drips and splatters from staining. Have a large old bath towel nearby to hold/dry the dyed item on. Wear gloves and mask if dye fumes bother you. Remember to wash the dye pot thoroughly when you're done.

What color fabric are you starting from? I assume you have like white or blue fabric
want it to be bluish-black? If so, I would get black and blue dye and do test scraps until you get the color balance right. Remember that no black dye is a true black, they're always a very dark shade of blue/purple/green/brown that appears black when concentrated.

Now if you're starting with black fabric and you want it to get lighter, that's not going to happen.

I'd guess the skirt is a knife pleat, and the ends of the sleeves are gathered then sewn to a cuff. Box pleats use more fabric than knife pleats, so that should help the bulkiness too.

You called it anon. I didn't put the rod all the way into the base and I had flattened the steel rod because the prop itself is super flat, which probably weakened it. I also sliced into my thumb while bevelling the edges with the exacto and remembered you warned me about this. Yikes, but it's all good now.

I've restarted and used a better foundation (an aluminum floor equalizer, it's pretty flat) and put it into the handle as you suggested, gluing the foam on top; it's pretty sturdy now! I'm using 5mm hardlite foam from Arda (might be cheaper stuff out there but I'm in Canada and clueless) and it seems to be pretty solid. Thanks for the plastidip recommendation, it's pricey here but I'll give it a shot.

First off, this photo's absolutely been edited (smoothing along the jawline and armpit, for a few places to start), so it's likely that the color and saturation of the lenses have also been boosted.

The lenses look like they could be Sweety, Super Pinky, or Geo Magic. There's a lot of overlap in designs, so you could check Honeycolor or Uniqso in the color category and browse around until you find something that works.

That's actually a good idea, I didn't think of dyeing at all. Actually probably should've just got all of the fabric in white since the color I settled for is a bit off from what I need, though I already ordered it so it's a bit late for that. What's wrong with buying a full costume and using only a part of it? Think of the extra as backup. If you want to make it yourself, start with a tank-top like pattern and add straps. If a fabric is a couple inches less wide than a pattern calls for (Specifically, it's 43" as opposed to 45") Would it still be okay to use, just with a little extra yardage tacked on? I'm having trouble finding the right color in a width higher than 45"

It should be okay if you're not jumping from 58/60" to 44/45" or vice versa. Patterns generally give people a bit of wiggle room.

Kona cotton is fine to okay depending on what you're using it for. It's a great beginner fabric to work with and comes in a lot of colors. Fabric quality is usually decent. The weave/thread count is on the lower side though, like if you put it next to even broadcloth you'll see the that threads aren't as tight together and the hand is rougher. It also wrinkles extremely easily from even being sat on or simply worn, due to being 100% cotton.
I wouldn't recommend it for making whole dresses/jackets/pleated skirt out of it but it should be fine for smaller items or details, or if you want to practice with a easy fabric.

I haven't dipped to heavily into the clay scene so I can't give you anything concrete, but when I was doing my research for the pendent I'm making for a current costume, FIMO, Sculpey, and a bunch of asian brands came up a lot. I bought a tiny square of Sculpey and found it to be very hard to work with which is why I recommended against it. I decided to go with Crayola Air-Dry clay and found it much easier to shape, fluffier, and air drying so I don't have to worry about burning my clay. On the opposite end, it doesn't dry rock hard. It still has some softness to it after a week of drying. So, in short. I'd say either watch some brand comparison videos and decide what you think would fit best for your project or buy a tiny square of FIMO and try it out, defaulting to Crayola if it doesnt. Or if you're comfortable with Crayola, jump for it. It's pretty cheap so beyond the unprofessional-sounding brand name, it worked out well for me. Just don't buy the tub, it dries out insanely quickly

Yeah, I was able to figure out the pockets. But like you touched upon, the zipper will be difficult. It's not just the zipper, it's also the waistband which is really wide that needs to be sewn in at the same time, and the zipper may be a bit too long, so it may reach where the pockets start, and I need to keep the pleats and maybe have to sew them in place. Possibly cut off the top of the skirt as well, but don't know if I'll be able to secure the new edge of the skirt with all these folds into each other.

Will probably figure it out, but it's daunting.

I'm gonna tell you what you aren't going to want to hear. Without the helmet I don't think anyone is going to know who you are. You're doing an "inspired" outfit which is cool, but switching out the helmet for an eyepatch is just going to make you look like a guy with an eyepatch. You've already changed too many of the other elements that to take away the most iconic part of the character would be silly.

Here's what me and every other person in this thread and probably on this board are going to tell you because/cgl/ has a huge dislike for men insisting they incorporate their beard into every cosplay: if the beard is uncomfortable, shave it. Even if it isn't uncomfortable, shave it. Huge beards in cosplay 10/10 times look ridiculous unless the character has a huge beard. I know you're going for an inspired, gritty sort of look but it'd look better with a closer shave, I promise. If the helmet's really uncomfortable, do sunglasses instead of the eyepatch. Several thick coats of a PVA glue like modge podge or elmers slightly diluted in water. Sand down and paint over it. Make sure it's well sealed because spray paint can melt polystyrene.

So far, the solution I've come up with has been to cut out the white of the eyes and try to replace them with these googly eyes I found and use some plastic with holes to see through. However I'm not sure what the best way to attach them is.

Hi guys, just wanted to ask for some advice: I know that it's common practice to de-shine a wig through a fabric softener bath, to remove unnatural shininess. Getting there with most of my props, but my plan to make this fancy cross handle out of PVC pipe with EVA layered over it for shape hasn’t really panned out. Layering sheets over a cylinder just makes a thicker cylinder instead of the squared-off target design, and I don’t really have the time to bulk it up with foam and then carve it back down.
Another idea is mushing heated Worbla into shape, but I doubt that would turn out very pretty.

Is there a clay or putty common to chain craft or hardware stores that will stick to PVC pipe well? My apoxie putty supply is limited to a single pound and isn’t available in town, so I’d rather not dip into that unless it’s my only option.

Yes, I've used Rit Dyemore on an Arda Magnum and it dyed the skin top and the lace-like pieces that the wefts are sewn to. They ended up much darker than the wig fibers.

They're not pintucks. It's closer to a garment sewn out of vertical strips or ribbed knit with skinny little ribs between fatter stripes. If you want to look decent in photos and at a glance, you can buy or print striped fabric. If you want to get accurate, custom-sewing strips together to make your pieces might be the way to go.

Check out the facebook market place, Letgo, or ebay. I bought an awesome Singer Brilliance 6180 second hand for $50 (retails at $120ish). It has an automatic needle threader, workspace light, and computerized stitch picker. All I needed was to buy the power cord and foot pedal which came out to like $30. Although it's not a bad idea, I think you won't have to add the plexiglass at all. There are already shoes out there without a heel that stand perfectly fine on their own. You could use those as a base then make a boot cover out of a sturdy material and use EVA foam or foam putty to build up those textured lines until you reach the knees then use regular stretchy material for the purple/red/violet stockings.

i want to dye a gradient pink on a blonde wig for star guardian Ahri. I've seen quite some people use rubbing alcohol and marker paint to dye wigs, is it a legit method? Will the texture be crappy?

I wanna buy a cheap cosplay for a convention in a month and a half ish. Found one to fit from both AnyCos and Rolecosplay. Which would you recommand?

Rubbing alcohol and a mix of alcohol-based inks like FW or Sharpie can sometimes make a wig crunchy, and you will have to be very careful of it rubbing off on your costume if the ombre is on the bottom part of the wig. Some people have used things like Pledge floor wax to seal the ink to fix this, but I would much sooner recommend dip-dyeing in fabric dye made for synthetics (iDye Poly is the best I've used) if your wig is heat-resistant. Much easier, less messy (IMO) and it won't rub off.

What type of adhesive should I be using on props covered in resin? I have a mask that I need to glue wing like things to and will need to fill in the gaps after attaching. I'm assuming I'll need some kinda putty I can sand down to get the smoothest results, but I was told by some people resin is super picky about what things adhere to it.

How in the world would I make a wig for this? I was thinking doing wefts and stuff but I feel like the back will look like a messy nightmare

This one by rufflebutt is pretty good. It doesn't go over how to make the actual pattern however, so I say make a saran wrap + duct tape form of your body. I am also in the process of making a bunny suit, with this tutorial. Hardest part is the boning and getting the boob area right. I'll post all the tutorials I know though, you might gleam something helpful from one of them.

My thought is that you could cycle through hair spray/gel > glitter > fine-tooth combing your wig until you get the layers built up to your desired result, but it could cause a couple of strands to clump together. Maybe you could make your own with a small spray bottle? I don't know the recipe off hand, but maybe if you make your own diluted hairspray mixed with glitter, it could dry onto the follicles. My last thought is sprayable body glitter, but I'm not sure how that'd mix with synthetic hairs since it's usually oil based.

If you have some spare wefts, or if you can obtain some for cheap, it wouldn't be a bad idea to try out different methods on em.

I'd say, that if you used hair fix (I don't know the actual name, but it holds hair in place for productions) overtop/underneath the gold dust, it should probably work.
Night need to experiment first, but it's probably a safer bet then gluing hair.

Back with another question about Antarc's ice cutter because it's becoming very apparent I suck at making props. So I filled in some gaps with foam clay, and thought I sanded it smooth enough (it felt really smooth, with no seams) but after plasti dipping it's pretty visible. Is this fixable or is it bound to look like a swollen skin sore? I read somewhere that you can smooth out the plasti dip with some mineral spirits and add another layer but considering the problem is the foam underneath, I'm not sure if that will be enough to cover it. Slight upside is that it's only visible in certain angles, but it still really bothers me.

I'll be making Lapis as well and I'm considering gold confetti. I find that glitter looks crusty and sandy, and like other anons said, it gets everywhere and inevitably sheds.

Confetti is still tedious to apply but would look much nicer I think. I'm not sure of the best way to apply it though, was thinking either with gem glue piece by piece, or maybe Got2B spray will be enough (spraying one layer, then putting the confetti on, and then one layer on top).

There's a tutorial you can watch on evilted that will get you most of the way with the base helmet shape. I would highly suggest that over a BMX helmet. Essentially take a mannequin head and use that for the basic shape and use cardboard for the rest. After that you'll have a pretty good template to work off of that you can apply to your foam. Putty should work fine, if you want to use less putty you can mostly fill the gaps with EVA foam and finish with putty

Follow up on this, do lenses that have never been opened have an expiration date? I really want to cosplay Asuka in her plug suit. I've heard it's notoriously hard to do yourself. I'm not the most experienced with sewing but I'm competent enough. I'm most confused about what fabric to make the base out of, as I don't want the suit to look wrinkly or tacky and i also don't want to spend an obscene amount of money. I've heard vinyl thrown around, and I know it's difficult to work with. If I don't make the suit from scratch, could I buy a vinyl bodysuit and construct armor over it? Any tips would be hugely appreciated. Pic attached is the closest i could find to my desired outcome

I think typically the best way to do a plugsuit costume is to buy one of the bodysuits and then add dimension to it it with armor pieces and props that you add on top of it. Especially adding layered pieces to the upper body, like the shoulders, chest, and those little grey plug things on the ribcage. Maybe a small neck collar as well. Then you also do the 'bracelets' and incorporate some kind of low profile black slipper that blends with the costume.

I'd suggest making your own nerve clip doodads so that they are made out of the same material as your wear-over props that go over the bodysuit, giving them a cohesive look that blends in with the rest of the costume.

I'm the wrong gender entirely for that sort of costume, but its my understanding that is how you do it if you can't make the whole plugsuit from scratch. Which most people can't, its a difficult piece.

Based on my memory of working with electricians, you could try making it out of heat shrink, and insert the specific things you want such as plugs or extra layers, then coat in gloss?
Simply suit up on the day and apply heat gun to self?

I remember seeing this one tutorial a while back that said one way to put a long wig into a high ponytail is to tie it into a low ponytail, take a large clip and clip the as much of the ponytail as you can vertically up the back, and then let the rest hang down from the top, if that makes sense. I can't seem to find it anymore though, does anyone have a link to this tutorial, or any resource that talks about using this method?

If you're worried about how the photos will come out or if you'll be awkward, practice poses and expressions in the mirror beforehand and find your angles. You can also do that with your own phone camera, angle your face different ways and snap some pics, that way you'll find out which exact ways to move and the photographer won't have to pose you as much. If you go into it being unconfident and feeling awkward, it won't go as smooth as you'd like, so just do some self-testing so you know what to do. Otherwise, just have fun!

You could use a clip on bun attachment and then pin the hair so that it emulates the pulled back look, but be sure to choose the right wig because otherwise you'll have wefts showing at the nape. You could do the same technique without a clip on attachment, just leave out the top layer of hair to pin on top for a smooth look.

Check the hair sections of any drugstore, you can pick up some plastic ones in multipacks. From experience, though, be careful with thin headbands: they can snap pretty easily. I lost a pair of horns that way once before.
