Regarding the post from the last thread about why these threads are called room threads and not home decor threads: there was never specifications about it having to be a bedroom, but bedrooms are most commonly posted because it's the easiest place to decorate. Lots of people, NEETs or not, can't have their own home, and sometimes when they do have their own home the bedroom is just the place they spend the most time in.

Besides, there's no need to be so insecure about liking cute things. Being an adult doesn't mean you aren't allowed to collect Sanrio merch. Being an adult means you can do what you want.

What's your dream room like? Be it a bedroom or a livingroom or a closet...whatever you like. Could you describe it?

I am moving into my own apartment in a few months and will be decorating for the first time. I have a feeling there will be a lot of pink, fluff and pastels.

>> No.10100979

Does anyone have any "traditional" farmhouse bedroom inspo? My bedroom is just large enough for a double bed, double wardrobe, and an ottoman. My furniture is light pine coloured and my walls are white. I want to display my Victorian photograph collection and a couple of lolita artwork. But I don't know how to go about it tastefully? I really don't want to add white accessories or anything shabby chic style.

Good question anon! The trouble is I like gothic interiors & curio displays, minimalism, art deco and 80s modern, indoor jungles, and a dash of cute shit - I have no idea how to successfully combine all these styles in a home without it looking like one massive clusterfork.

Dita Von Teese's home was posted earlier, she managed to make her eclectic interior work, so maybe there's hope, I think it'll just take a lot of planning.

I think what you have sounds beautiful anon. I'm with you on the all-white shabby chic thing too - frankly I'm sick of it, and the accompanying heart chalkboard 'home sweet home' type stuff. Somewhat rustic and shabby can be cool, but I think it can all too easily fall into twee cliche.

Anyway anon, how about keeping things relatively simple not unlike in the attached collage, and say, adding your pictures in the Victorian staggered cluster style. I don't know if you have wooden floors, but a rug of some kind could look beautiful.

As the decor will be quite neutral you can pretty much go with whatever bedding, curtains etc take your fancy, from hints of gothic with curio displays, to understated or traditional type prints such as William Morris.

My dream has taken a long time to put into words, but I want a perwinkle&purple wonderland with a magic feeling that makes you want to peek out the window for elves and fairies. I want a room where I can watch my planted tank thrive and have a small shelf full of leafy plants that smell pleasant. I want it to be a soft, safe place where things grow quietly and steadily and where I can go when I need to rest. Purple mixed with dark woody colors, plants, and crystals are my inspirations for my dream room! Though I can’t have lilac walls like I want, I get to paint my walls white, and I plan to hand plants, my jellyfish baubles, and fantasy forest pictures so I feel like I’m transported away every time I open my door!

I'm not so keen on the colour or fabric choices here but the general approach / principle might be helpful - i.e. choosing your colour and fabric choices and keeping it coherent, as well as thinking about any additional items such as wall clocks, mirrors etc. Also if you have room, I think tub chairs like in the pic look amazing in farmhouse rooms and add a bit of stylish luxury to the overall look.

Thank you, anon. This is exactly what I was looking for. I want the bedroom to appear warm but sophisticated. I really like the idea of displaying the photographs in a clustered style. I don't have the space to fit any additional furniture into the room– I did really want a chair. I like the idea of incorporating a couple of small plants. I have an old lamp with a fancy marbled base that needs a new lampshade. I'm definitely going to see whether I can source a lampshade like the ones in the first image you shared!

I get where you're coming from and I've definitely died a little inside when I've seen people paint up say, beautiful oak vintage furniture with a unique patina or slap some white chalk crackle paint over a Victorian antique. On the other hand, I don't think we should necessarily be too precious – I've seen some amazing transformations of furniture that was destined for landfill, or unappealing vintage furniture given a new lease of life. Not to mention painting furniture isn't a modern phenomenon, lot's of vintage or even antique furniture was lacquered or painted, as well as covered in thick layers of varnish. In general, I'd rather see furniture recycled and given a new lease of life, so they can be used and enjoyed again than chucked out.

I've also worked for charities where people donate furniture and a lot of the wooden items, particularly pine and low-mid quality furniture from the 30s, 40s, 60s and 70s just don't sell and after taking up space for months, are either recycled or given to a furniture project. Sometimes volunteers paint the furniture and suddenly it sells. I'd rather furniture like this find new homes after being 'upcycled' than end up just recycled for parts. Hell, some of it is perceived as so ugly, unfashionable and undesirable that we can't even give it away.

Pic related is cheap faux baroque style furniture painted black.

Also agree with giving furniture new life if it desperately needs some TLC and/or could do with a new look. On an unrelated note that gold trimmed white nightstand is giving me some SERIOUS deja vu, I swear I had that exact same nightstand when I was a kid. The more I look at it, the more I'm sure that's the same one. Had a matching dresser and everything, both used to belong to my aunt in the 80s I think. Very strange to see it now, even if it probably isn't the one I had actually owned.

nayrt but I pretty much agree, saving stuff from landfill when it's useable is always a good plan. "Upcycling" only annoys me when it's something like a beautiful unused antique in great condition that you know some homeowner somewhere would find perfect for their 19th Century whatever or Art Deco house. I get that value is determined by the market and all that, but it breaks my heart if you've got a beautiful untouched original finish and just chalk paint over it without respect for the original craftsperson...different if it's a very standard, commonly available kind of thing from 40-50 years ago.

Nayrt but fitted sheets sometimes move around a lot and can't be tightened like flat sheets. I also enjoy purchasing vintage floral sheets and it's easier to find nice flat sheets than fitted ones (which tend to be more worn or with busted corners). Also, even when I use fitted sheets I prefer to have a flat sheet tucked into hospital corners on top so my sheets stay put while I'm sleeping; that sounds like a pain and a half in a lofted bed.

Regardless of the age of that pic, I think small CRT's look adorable and can see why they might appreal if you don't have the space widthways.

I also have a feeling that picking up certain old CRTs might become a thing, if it's not already. Maybe I'm lame but I lept a bunch of my old horror vhs due to their amazing cover art, and have often thought it would be fun to watch them on an old tv.

I guess they may have hit that tipping point where they have retro appeal rather than just being outdated. Of course most of them are now festering in actual waste tips.

As for tidying up a collection: the KonMari method could help you, i.e. finding what "sparks joy" and peacefully parting ways with the things that don't (this helped me tidy up recently when it came to purging stuff I still had for some reason from when I was a preteen as well as stuff that I got more recently). But if its just a matter of just displaying things in a prettier way, then why not try to coordinate the pieces by color or style to make it more aesthetically pleasing rather than just a pile of stuff put on a table with no rhyme or reason? Though... It's a little hard to give advice without knowing about the situation itself.

Maybe get some accent decor pieces to add some colour to the furniture. Pillows and throws and table runners work quite well. It all depends on the aesthetic you're going for though. If you want a moody goth room, I'd suggest doing black or a dark grey for the walls. You could also try red if you like a really bold primary coloured room. If you're going for a more romantic look, you could try wallpaper, or pink shabby chic decor pieces.

Do you like your white furniture? There's always the option of vinyl sheets to temporarily alter the look of them, or highlight pieces (like the top of a table, or panels of a shelf) of the furniture. As someone else mentioned, art could also help.

>> No.10145217

i like my white furniture, and i already have a fair bit of accent decor and art. the problem is that white walls make me think “hospital” and i’m not sure if any amount of decoration will be able to get rid of that vibe in my mind. i do want a more subtle color on the walls so it doesn’t clash horribly, but i want to still be able to tell that the color is there.

I'm not sure the paint would hold very long. It might chip off or scratch easily with time (though sealing the paint might help a little bit). Especially in the spots that suffer friction when you open the drawers.
Do you have any idea what material the organizer is made of (maybe from a sticky tag)? If yes you could ask in your local hardware store which paint and sealer would stick best.

You can certainly mix the two. There's nothing outlandish about decorating decadent furniture with a bunch of stuffed animals. Figures can be organized and presented on a nice bookshelf similar to an art piece. The only conflicting element might be the posters, but even then you might be able to keep them around a desk/office area or try to work with the predominant colors so that it matches.

I think the thing with that mix would be to find the common themes in both styles and start there. The area I think they cross over in is the use of bold/bright colours and that slightly crowded lots-of-stuff look, but to be honest if you try to decorate with both you are likely to end up looking more one than the other. I assume by fairy kei decor you mean 80s influenced with collectible characters, brights and pastels and quite cutesy - so you could use those themes but have (for example) the textures/draping that often happens in boho with a floor rug, printed or woven soft furnishings with texture and tassels, etc. I have also seen rainbow palettes in boho decor with varying degrees of success so that could be another avenue to think about.

How old are you and do you have any means of footing the bill yourself if there's anything you need?

I recently gutted my room and spruced it up with some ikea hacks which I paid for myself and had other people take me to pick things up in exchange for favours to avoid shipping fees. One of which was a desk because my original one was a kids one from the 90s that my family didn't want to let go of. Since then I've upgraded and have better storage while having an improved workspace. It was a total game changer for me.

Just in case you're interested in my setup, its a Gerton tabletop mounted on top of two Alex units with 5 drawers each. On top of that I have the hemnes desk add on. You end up with a nice amount of leg space and space for a little bin,12 drawers in total if you count the two on the desk add on and you can decide where the shelves go for yourself - then you have room on top of that to put figs if your mom has issues with putting in your own shelves or damaging the walls - because that sounds like what might be the cause.
The entirety of this set up was cheaper than the hemnes desk add on coupled with the hemnes desk intended for it and you end up with more room.

I put my plushies in a kallax unit next to that which I lay flat as a kind of sideboard which has my mirror and a few other things on top, it'd be great for displaying some figs.

Honestly it'd be worth sitting down and asking her what concerns her the most about personalising things and finding out if it is mostly concerns about damaging the walls. Trying to angle for a better workspace environment might help to get you some leverage in improving the desk situation, since you're a student you're going to spend a lot of time at your desk and it'll discourage you from lounging on your bed. Once you find out the problem areas, the more able you are to bargain and compromise.

If you want pics of how it turned out, let me know, I'd be happy to show you.

Yikes, if you're paying rent you should definitely have some say in how you're able to decorate your room and have some ownership on your personal space. I agree with the others in moving out as soon as you can being the best option.

Here's my setup so far, I still have some tweaking to do with it especially since my ceiling decided to start leaking the very weekend after I finished building. The tabletop is sturdy even with the add-on unit, but I'd still recommend bolting them together for extra security if you go down this route.

I love your eclectic room anon! It's really fun just looking at all the interesting things you've collected.

One thing I might suggest is, it looks a little cramped where you have a few pictures low down on the wall near the top of your chest of draws. I think it could look slightly more coherent visually if you removed the lowest pictures there, and then perhaps hung them higher on the wall where you have some space. You could also use say, a shelf raiser on your chest of draws so that you can see all the objects you have displayed there a little more clearly by adding another level. I have attached a masterful paint edit to try to show what I mean and how removing the lower pictures opens up the space.

It's only a very small change, but I think it could make quite a difference.

Does anyone have weeby or kawaii glamping inspo? Not gross absudly rich people who ruin burning man glamping, just larger camps that are decorated and RV or van conversions. I would love to see more kawaii tents out there as I can't justify an RV or a van with how little I actually travel. I would just like my own kawaii space at the like 2 festivals I go to every year.

Isn't this melonpan's otaku room?
I know he posted his actual apartment on twitter which looked very comfy.

She's my boyfriend's cat. Her name is Gouda and I love her so much. She and her entire litter were named after cheeses.
