fwiw I understand what it's like to have parents like this. I would express interest in trying something new and my mother would pout "But your hair is so beautiful, why do you want to change it?" as if getting a haircut would make me ugly. You might have to put your foot down and tell them you are getting a haircut with your own money. Your hair will grow back. Cutting doesn't cause damage or need constant maintenance.

The ones you can get for $3 on eBay are actually surprisingly decent too
If you wanna really go the extra mile with them, buy two so you can layer them
If you wanna go even extra-extra, comb a little cornstarch or dry shampoo through them
Always be sure to comb all of your hair and fake hair together when you style them, get that blended natural look

You can get completely decent wigs for like $10 on amazon or ebay if you're willing to give them a little TLC (e.g. trimming, styling, de-shining). If you can afford lolita, then you can afford a wig.

Seems like most of the people in the inspo photos are either old school or whites. I bit the bullet and got a wig finally because something about no bangs seems to to be way more "classic" feeling than appropriate for sweet.

I've gone bangs-no bangs-bangs and wore sweet. Its not a requirement anon. Those centre placed headbows look better with a full fringe though, that's about the only concession I made- switching to an off centre headbow.

Honestly the hardest part about using clip ins is just color/texture matching, synthetic is usually too shiny and it can be especially hard to match shades of brown or blonde. I think they look fine when styled properly with dark hair.
You can get human hair ones relatively inexpensively now, even from Amazon for less than ~$50. If you color your hair, just buy ones closest to your hair color but slightly lighter and use the same due on them. If your hair is natural, buy the same but take them to your local beauty supply like Sally Beauty and have the shop workers help you pick out a dye that matches your color best.
