Old thread hit bump limit >>10025409

This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. "Boystyle" is shorthand for "boystyle lolita" and refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and, often, aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

Discussion: Have you modified any lolita dresses or skirts into ouji wear? Do you have any resources to help someone accomplish this?

You see the bottom edges flaring out here, my pattern didn't tell me to use interfacing on the bottom edge and I'm dumb. Do it and don't make my mistake. AatP uses a stiffer fabric as lining on all edges on their waistcoats, that works too.

>> No.10103450

>>10103431
for interfacing do you put it just in the hem of what your sewing or would you do like a whole triangle of interfacing to fill the point?
Also what pattern did you use??

>> No.10104016

>>10103431
i never would have thought of that, thank you

>> No.10104112

>>10103450
Personally I would interface the entire front of a waistcoat because it just looks and sits much, much better than not fused regardless of the weight of a fabric. To me, a waistcoat is supposed to create a smooth line and the interfacing will help that. You're not going to be using like...a shirt-collar weight here, a light to light-midweight fusible should be fine.

>> No.10104398

>>10104112
Ah that makes sense thank you!
Would you ever use interfacing while making a pair of ouji style shorts? I have a pattern that I'm planning to alter into the right shape for the look I want but no idea if I'll need to use interfacing.

>> No.10104438

>>10103450
Depends on fabric type, since I've made that one I've experimented with different fabrics, for heavier fabrics I would only use strips along the hem, for lighter fabrics I would do as >>10104112 and use a lighter interfacing along the entire panel, with maybe an additional strip along the hem. I used McCall's M7003, though I altered the shape since the smallest waistcoat size was /way/ too big for me.

>> No.10104451

>>10104398
Always. I would always interface the waistband, zipper area if not making a half-elastic waist, and any leg cuffs and bows like >>10102937 has on the bottom of the shorts. I suspect >>10102943 may not have interfaced the visible part of the leg cuffs, which doesn't necessarily look bad per se but just means things don't sit as smoothly.

>> No.10104480

>>10104438
ah thank you! I have a waist coat pattern (a simplicity one) that i think i'll make a mock up of first before I actually use any actual material.

>> No.10106430

>>10104480
I would never use heavyweight interfacing for pants (when I say heavyweight, I mean the kind you find in stiff dress shirts) as you don't want it to look like you put cardboard in there, you just want it to have some body and sit stiffly. Honestly, you shouldn't need more than a light or midweight fusible, the lighter the fabric generally the lighter weight the interfacing so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. You want your pant cuffs to look smooth and well constructed and still have some movement, not stiff and solid or floppy and crinkled.

I was there.

Some pieces were okay, but it mostly just looked haphazard and awkward. The construction was solid as always, but the light denim really just ruined everything. If she had embraced the tackiness of the denim and used correspondingly light colors, it would have been less incoherent. The outfits coordinated well as a group at the end of the show, but they were individually lackluster.

In the Q&A, she basically said that she designed the series to spite the "no jeans" rule at every tea party, and that pretty much all the thrift stores in her area know her now for her villainous jean-hoarding ways.

She put a lot of time and effort into this, and the cuts and silhouettes looked great, but the materials and colors brought everything down. I really appreciate her effort and commitment to experimentation, though!

Long shorts, wide flaring pants, and even some full length punk pants work very well. Silhouette and maturity go hand in hand in ouji, so short, poofy things are cuter and more youthful, whereas long pants that extend the line of the legs look more elegant and aristocratic. A long flared pant leg will look slimmer than tight ones.

I've seen sweaters, cardigans, and I think one sweater vest in punk schoolboy-styled coordinates, but they're not very common.
You could definitely do a cute sweet look with a pastel argyle sweater vest, but gothic and classic ouji would be difficult.

it depends on what they look like and how they are worn. some may be suited for preppy ouji, or a retro-inspired classic look. (mid-century professor, etc.)

I really like the pants and feel like they are very lolita/ouji, but not too sure about the top? Its custom made so I could request some changes, what do you think would make it more ouji, or are the top and bottom just bad?

>> No.10117821

The top isn't really salvageable, at least to me, but there are plenty of cream blouses out there.
The shorts don't fit the model well, which bodes ill if they're custom made. The lacing at the cuffs looks off to me as well.

layers will probably help you the most, for flexibility. straighten them, spike rhem, give the tips a curl, etc. you can even get extensions to add a ponytail if you like, and that tends to work better if the cut of the wig is layered.

i think that is why a lot of oujis sew their own.

ikemen mode has some basics on their webstore, but the sizes may not go large enough: https://ikemenmode.com/collections/all

Miss Danger Shop takes custom commissions and has made ouji sfuff before: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MissDangerShop

Elegy Clothing's most recent ouji releases are out of stock, and they only have their older stuff on their webstore, but keep an eye for their next preorder. their shorts had different lengths available and all their sizes can go much larger than i've seen, and they recently offered a men's cut version for their ouji vests, which went up to 41" for the waist. however, their blouses look to be still available, and custom sizing is also possible:

http://www.elegyclothing.com/c-o-l-l-e-c-t-i-o-n-s/student-blouse-white

it is not as sweet as what you posted, but it is a decent option for a basic blouse, if you do not mind semi-sheer sleeves. they also have a black version.

If you have your heart set on beige, consider getting some steampunk shit. The quality is generally alright and most steamshit is aimed at Americans. Etsy is rife with steampunk.

Once you have a nice foundation, you can go wild with jabots, pins, hats, fancy socks, and really any accessory that calls to you. You can easily switch out buttons, add lace, or layer things on.

Because fitting garments are so hard to come by, most oujis (myself included) started their wardrobes with black everything plus a white blouse. This makes it easy to integrate in new pieces.

With a beige/cream/brown starter palette, you'll need to implement some color theory, but exact matching won't be as important. You can also more easily implement patterned outerwear and colors (jewel tones, dusty pastels, metallic) with this palette.

As with anything, look at reviews and materials before you buy, and don't be afraid to consult this thread!

the scan quality is not great, which is unfortunate, because there are only 3 non-ouji coords on this section and i would have liked to read the info for the oujis. to be clear, even the one with a sword is saying their coord is ouji ("daru daru ouji" but idk what "darudaru" means). a lot of ouji was overlooked by early scanlations and it is sad to think of all the lost history we could have had, instead of the "kodona"/"dandy" confusion

new dump from combing through Fruits.

observations: the brand Christopher Nemeth, which would later be modeled by Ryutaro of Plastic Tree who coined the term "kodona", had a lot of cool shit. a lot of proto-ouji looks from the late 1990s feature half-pants from Christopher Nemeth.

other brands include Vivienne Westwood, Miho Matsuda, Milk and Milk Boy, Jane Marple.

also, it is difficult for me to decide what counts as ouji. here, someone is wearing a frilly blouse from Milk and some Christopher Nemeth pants. it has many features of an ouji coord, but does not quite hit the mark.

there are also many snaps i would classify more as punk, or prep, even if their aesthetic and silhouettes likely contributed to ouji. i am not sure these are worth posting. but if they appear beside a lolita, and seem to be trying to match, i figure they are trying for a "masculine lolita" style and will include them.

yes, but i lost their handle. i have been looking all over to find them again. if you check the #dobusu tag on IG and Twitter, there are a few dark oldschool-style (and sometimes highly stylized) fashionistas in Japan who follow the artist of dobusu brand tights (https://mobile.twitter.com/xx4xxdobusu)) and seem to share an aesthetic that is reminiscent of old gothic GLB illustrations.

the ouji whose IG i lost may have privatized it, but as soon as i recover their handle i will share.

there is no rule beyond matching your coord and not hurting yourself imo. edgy leather boots are great for gothic, punk, or rock ouji coords.

i do not personally like some boots i see used that have a lot of metallic elements, when the coord does not have much metal otherwise. it looks unbalanced.

chunky boots with tall platforms give an oldschool feeling, like >>10126713, >>10126684, >>10126678, >>10126674,

finding short multicolor wigs, especially gradient ones, is hard. so i want to share a Japanese wig company that has a wide variety available: https://locoloco.jp/?mode=grp&gid=1741227

i have not ordered from them. but i hope to see more companies making multicolor short wigs, since trimming longer wigs usually removes the color variance and i am not ready to dye.

I've been wanting to start wearing aristo for quite a few years now. Is it even possible if I'm 6'3" tall? What would my maximum measurements need to be?
I don't expect to be spoonfed all the info I need, and I need to do better to research it myself. Sorry in advance if this is off topic.

you would be better off just getting into some sort of avant garde men's fashion. the ouji stuff with shorts won't look right at all, you'd be better off in aristo, but blouses will be too short and jackets and vests will sit too high

Yeah, I've come to terms that I'll never fit in ouji. Aristo is what I always wanted to do anyway. It just seems like I can never do it no matter how skinny I get myself.

Oh well. Maybe I'll just die and reincarnate as normal height so I can wear Boz. That's all I really want.

You know what? Fuck this self pity shit. I'm going to do aristo no matter what.

I found this old guide that's really encouraging me.
http://rosanitida.blogspot.com/2010/12/12-steps-to-become-gothic-aristocrat_23.html
>It's a sad fact, but styles like lolita and aristocrat simply look better on thin people (in most cases) - aristocrat is a great style for tall people, though! Outstanding height makes the whole outfit look more elegant and that way aristocratic - that's why models are tall too.
>Often even as simple thing as a well-fitting black/dark coloured suit with elegant gothic details and accessories, like crosses, roses, walking sticks, bags and hats goes for an aristocratic outfit. It's so often all about the make up and hair!
I can do this, even as a tall and thin person.

Why were you worried about doing this as a tall thin person? I can see being self conscious about wanting to do it as a fatty, but it's literally tall thin person aesthetics. You can do it anon, don't let your self-insecurities stop you, especially in something literally made for you aesthetic wise.

Well, it's scary being 6'3" and wanting to get into a fashion primarily made up of tiny people.
Also, I did used to be a fatty, but I lost 50 lbs, and I'm still losing, because I run 5k almost every day now.
I still need to get my measurements a bit lower though, so it's still intimidating.

I am a taller girl into lolita, so I know how it can be. Blouses are a bit short on me, but things like wristcuffs really help. Can't help you with aristo though, but I'm sure you can find a way, just like I do with lolita! good luck anon, and don't let anything get in your way of dressing how you want! You can do it!
