My friend along with a bunch of other people got scammed by this wig commissioner who basically was like “I’m not doing wig commissions anymore and not finishing any that people have already paid for and also I’m not giving any refunds” this person is trying to stay part of the cosplay community despite being a massive shitstain. Is there anything i/they can do to effectively call this person out? Their shop is rabbit+hare on fb

Gather appropriate and related caps (caps of the announcement, caps of any correspondence esp. if it's you asking for a refund and them saying no, that kind of thing), write up a basic summary of what happened, and share it on Facebook and Twitter as those are the sites where its easiest for things to go viral + where most of the cosplay community hangs out now. Need to make a helmet fitted to my head, but I don't have a separate head cast to work off of. Any ideas for how i'd go about making my pattern pieces? Someone reccommended plastic wrap and duct taping over it, but seems like it could be difficult to get smooth and to apply/remove.

Do you have someone who can help you apply the tape and cut you out? If not you can try taking precise measurements and covering a styrofoam wig head in painter's tape until it's the same dimensions as your head

I'm trying to find a tutorial on how to draft a gathered collar like this out of a normal high neck bodice pattern, but all I can find is tutorials about making puff sleeves and wide skirts. I'm ESL so there's probably a word I'm missing. Can someone help?

It looks ruched to me, I'd try that as the first key word, and from the pic, you can see that elastic thread is used for the ruching on the upper seam of the collar. If your search results are coming up empty, I'd include elastic thread as a keyword. From what I can see, though, you might be able to get away with just cutting the collar fabric longer (in the same way you'd alter a sleeve pattern to make it puffy) and ruch it until it reaches its original pattern length

I need some help making a petticoat for a bowsette cosplay. how should i go for it?

I need some advice on long wigs. Ive cosplayed for years but I always avoid long haired characters due to wig tangling. I know certain wigs tangle less, but they all still look like shit on the con floor, regardless of material. That said, every so often I'll see someone with a smooth, highly volumized long wig and it looks great and more importantly, not tangled due to the way its been "sculpted" on the bottom. How does one do this? Is it just a shit ton of teasing? And does it help with the tangling issue? Pic related, I desperately want to cosplay kite but his hair is a nightmare waiting to happen. I was dumb and posted in the old thread by mistake. I have never been to a con before but I've finally decided to take the plunge. How long in advance should you book your hotel room for a con? I tried finding a room for Ohayocon (I live in Ohio) in December but they were all understandably taken up by then, so then I looked for rooms for Colossalcon but they were all booked up too. Then I tried to go for Matsuricon but it looks like even those have all been taken as well even though it's a full eight months away.

I have been told the con hotel experience is special, is that true, or would it be worth it to just get an Airbnb or something?

hey everyone, just thought i'd pop in and ask for some assistance. i'm planning on doing a cosplay of ranma kakogawa from future card buddyfight, and id like some pointers on how to go about purchasing/styling the wig.

his hair is pretty fluffy/spiky, and while i want it to look similar to the character, i want it to be a bit more natural and with a good amount of volume. would anyone have suggestions on what wig length i should buy as well as any guides/tips on how to style it? i know the basics on cutting/fluffing/spiking, but this seems to a bit more advanced.

Is there a good way to compensate for height? I spent a couple of months working on a superman cosplay, and while it felt good aesthetically, the moment I saw a 6' guy, I just felt like trash even though our outfits were comparable in quality (I'm a 5'2" manlet, not going to lie.) If you go to a popular convention, most people book their hotel the minute the hotels are released so the rooms are usually sold out within minutes. You'll have better luck finding a hotel that is near the convention but not the hotel the convention is being held at.

In my experience, getting an airbnb isn't the same as getting a hotel during a con but at least the amenities are better.

The major thing is the convenience of having a crash space nearby. It's nice to have a room at the venue so you can drop off swag, change outfits or just take a map in the middle of the day. If you're not cosplaying and can make it through the day without needing a break, booking offsite is fine.

It all depends on how you enjoy a con. Since you say you've never been, it might be best to hit up some smaller local cons with one day tickets to see if it's your scene. They can be rather awkward going solo but if you know any experienced con goers that can guide you, you'll have a much better time.

Plastic wrap and duct tape is just the first stage of getting a pattern. You can close up the duct tape cast and stuff it to use for an actual pattern on whatever medium suits you.

They probably just teased, straightened, and gelled the bottom. Looks like you could do that with a couple of choice pieces. I'd recommend using silicone lubricant spray on the wig to make the fibers glide more smoothly against each other and tangle less.

It's not really any different than a normal spike, just larger. You need to build up a really solid foundation so that it has a leg to stand on. Got2B glued freeze spray is always the go to. If you want it "natural" I guess, just make sure to really neatly brush out the top layer of the spike and make sure that all of the fibers are going in the same direction. As for the wig, you should get one that's at least over the shoulders. You need to accommodate for the length of those spikes and the amount of hair that's going to be bunched up in the teasing. Always better to have more than less.

Here's my costume so far. I have better boots that arrived after the pic was taken.

Pic related is a rough idea of how I made my skirt!

I added a lot of extra hoop steel to the opening than the tutorial (purchased separately), and flexible pvc tubing with 3 thick, twisted wires threaded through it so that the skirt was somewhat posable. A butt pillow/ bustle underneath the skirt (in the same color of the underskirt) was necessary to counterbalance the weight and to prevent it from closing in the front. Adding the petticoat netting made the skirt more cupcake-shaped. If you need any additional help let me know!

Pleats with horsehair braid.
As long as you don't press the pleat all the way too the hem, you can still have the volume and shape without the rigid structure.
Alternatively you could do the pleats not pressed to the hem and wear a petticoat for volume.

Hey all! I need help trying to figure out who to cosplay for a convention in september, if anyone has any suggestions matching my body description that would be great.

I mainly play western video games/ read western comics and something I've noticed is that the main male characters are usually big beefy guys that look cool as fuck, however I know I could never accurately cosplay them since I'm below average height with a thin frame and an androgynous baby face to the point i get mistaken as a girl when my hair gets too long.

What would you imagine the leggings/belt/straps are made of?

Any good tips on the process of tracing patterns on fabric? It works well when it's a thick fabric that doesn't slide around, but if it's something slippery like satin it doesn't translate well. Right now I cut on the ground, and just use my knee to hold it down, but it's not really that efficient. I've been getting into better fabric (satin, suit-tier wool) that is a lot finer and slippier, and it seems I need to upgrade.

Like sewing patterns? Are you using pins or pattern weights and still having trouble tracing? Using your knee doesn’t sound very effective lol

I use freezer paper for all my patterns. It works well on slippery fabrics since you can iron it directly to the fabric to temporarily attach it, plus it’s durable. There’s also pattern basting spray that makes a similar effect on any paper, and is reactivatable with heat. If you’re not using pins already you should do that first though, especially for retail patterns.

There’s also water/air soluble markers, tailors chalk, and/or heat disappearing pens you should look at for tracing if you haven’t aleady.

i always pin my fabric regardless of type; i even have a set of silk pins that only get used for delicate fabrics. i also have a set weights which are really useful, some even have spikes if you're working on a surface you can pin into. Angela Clayton I THINK uses foam board/foam core on top of her cutting table so she can pin her stuff directly onto the table.

The thing is, I don't have pattern weights, I know OF them but I don't know if they're worth it. Sounds like they definitely are, though.

I currently use water soluble pencils and pens to trace said patterns, the problem arises when the fabric is incredibly slippery and moves when I hold it down with my knee (something that would likely be solved with weights). I'll cop some on Amazon then

Wow, funny you mention the back thing, I'm a /fit/ transplant but cutting patterns on the floor really does strain your lower back much more than I ever thought. I just don't have the space for a full sewing area, I just move my machine/notions whenever I get set to sew, so definitely no space for a table. I used to use a magnetic board underneath my cutting mat and use magnets to secure the pattern in place (which worked extremely well), but I don't have that now. Got to get some pattern weights (and needles)

I bought a black trench coat but the lining is maroon - since I want to cosplay Spider-Man Noir (from Spider-verse, he's always in black-and-white) I don't want any color visible.
The tag says that the lining is "Acetate" - I assume it won't take dye, plus it recommends dry cleaning only on the tag. Would giving it a pass with fabric spray paint work?
Or would it be better off to just cut out the lining altogether? I don't plan to wear it in a non-cosplay setting.

Pattern weights are not specialized tools, a lot of people use little bags filled with sand or 1-2-3 blocks but if you're cheap or lazy like me you can use heavy items you have lying around

You can dye acetate with the right product but you need a dye specifically formulated for it, dyes meant for natural fibers won't work. I'm not familiar with fabric spray paint, I'll just recommend you do a patch test before doing the whole garment. Taking out the lining is an option but the seams underneath may be kind of ugly.

Agreed. Remember that if you're going to dye the linning, you might get it on the coat as well. Same with the fabric paint .you need to pin back the coat from the linning. If you intend to remove the lining, you should replace it with some black lining because, as the other anon said, those seams will be worse than a little maroon peaking out.

You can pick up a couple of heavy nuts, washers, or etc. from the hardware store if you MUST buy something. They're less than a dollar each and work well.

Not a bad idea actually. You'd probably have better luck with magnets sewn into a harness that you wear under the shirt tho. Just a band around your torso that has over-the-shoulder straps would be fine if you had it so it could be tightened up snug.

Where can I find one of those medical eye patches lots of anime characters wear? All the ones I've found look really cheap. Saw someone with a plastic one once and it looked pretty nice.

How much do your guys' cosplays usually end up costing? The last one I did (a Jawa from StarWars) came out to something around $300, and this next one is shaping up to around $400. Does this sound higher than average? For what it's worth, I'm making a prop for this next one and with all the electronics it'll cost around $140 on it's own, although if I don't want it to produce smoke I could cut that down to closer to $70.

I personally do the dumb meme of buying a small amount several times over throughout a single cosplay (ie. buy fabric one day, costs $X, buy more fabric second day, costs $Y, buy new needles/thread, costs $Z, etc etc) and I never add up the total cost so I never keep track. I self-draft (due to several reasons, I'm a guy so patterns are more restrictive, I don't know how ot read/modify patterns, and I'm self taught so I'm not that efficient), so it takes me quite a while (around ~4 months since I pace myself for the next con, and I go to AnimeBoston and AnimeNYC (which are in April/November, so I have enough time even if I'm slow as fuck). If I devoted all my spare time to it, I'd say ~2 weeks total? I work on and off a lot.

Again, totally depends on how extreme the design in question is. I do somewhat conventional cloth pieces that might be a little weird (ie. currently working on Gilgamesh from UBW self drafted). I also try to add some new technique every time I make a new cosplay. Like now, I'm learning how to do linings, which obviously adds more time since it's my first attempt.

End of march is Pax East IIRC, if you're in Boston are and looking for fabric I recommend Sewfisticated in Somerville. Stupidly cheap fabric there.

All the clothing for my cosplay is just conventional clothing which has to be slightly modified for the actual costume. Tbh, the hardest part about my cosplay is the prop, but I think it would be super cool to have it actually up and running and producing smoke how I want.
For reference, I'm going as Danny Phantom and I want to make a working Thermos from the show. I already have it all designed, but it's gonna cost like $140 for all the parts. I could cut it down to just $70 and it would only light up without any smoke, that'd put my total for the cosplay around $340 instead. Do you think it's worth the extra $70 for the smoke? It depends on your dedication to it. If your cosplay is good without it, you probably don't need it as much. A prop should be slightly less amazing than your cosplay (IMO). There was a really good Genos at ANYC that produced smoke from his joints, which drew a lot of crowds. If you're into it for the attention, then by all means. The light-up aspect is cool enough already IMO, and the $ spike is HUGE. So, I personally would just do light-up and call it a day, since smoke costs twice as much.

I wanted to hit Pax, but the panels were kind of lacking lately, and it costs a ton. Catch me at ABoston though. Tell us how it goes!

I know how to take care of my hair normally, I don't see how it would be any different being dyed. I don't know about you, but I'm never usually "greasy and unkempt" during or after cons. Arda is a wig brand. I have one of their wigs and can vouch for their quality. You will probably have to style it yourself though, unless your character has more or less "unstyled" hair.

I will agree with anon talking about the hair dyeing. A good wig will look good, and will style well. On top of that, Danny Phantom's hairstyle isn't really advanced enough for an expensive wig, at the very most it'll be a lacefront.

This is up to you though, I personally think wigs are better 99% of the time, but dyeing hair is cool as fuck as having it be a two for one expense is FANTASTIC.

I really don't like the look of cosplay wigs. Even the good quality ones are usually distracting and take away from the whole piece. With luck you'll get a very pale blonde or possibly a toned grey but the white danny has is unlikely unless youre willing to go more than one over several weeks. As for styling. Conventions are hot, there are a lot of people and you'll be walking around for hours minimum. You natural hair may not hold the shape if you get sweaty so be ready for that is all other anon was saying about 'unkempt'. If you dont like the way some wigs have shine then soak it in fabric softener, it helps remove that a bit but when you get a decent quality wig they dont normally have that shine to them that bad.


Either way though whether you use your real hair or dont you asked for help and it was offered, the back and forth bogs down the thread and its not anyones job in here to CONVINCE you. You know have information to go off of so make a choice that works best for what you.

I've done two costumes so far. First one was $80 for a long wig, materials for the hairpiece, outfit, shoes, wig styling products, and false lashes. Took me a couple of months to make the hairpiece (foam, felt, and wrapped hair), and a few days to style the wig. Costume two is mostly handmade, currently costs $70 for tutu, fabric, boning, wig, sculpey, feathers, paint, wire, stockings, lashes, and shoes. The labor has taken me two months so far and will more than likely continue for the next five months. It's self drafted, I've done several mock ups, and will probably do several more. For all of the effects you're putting into your costume, it doesn't sound unreasonable but maybe consider finding ways on how to cut your spending - like buying in bulk perhaps. It's your hobby and if it makes you happy to spend a little more money (and you're financially able) then do so, man.

There isn't a single major cosplayer out there that uses their real hair for a costume and for good reason. Wigs can be made to look like the real deal. There's a majority out there that already do. And they can achieve larger than life styles consistently throughout the day and stored for later use. It just doesn't make fiscal sense to pay that much.

How do you guys choose to price homemade costumes you're selling?

I sold my first prop yesterday but I had no clue what to put it at. I made it for myself originally, but it didn't turn out 100% the way I wanted, and there were some visible messy parts. It was just foam & wood, and took me about a week or so to make, working a couple hours each day, and I sold it for 60 CAD. I mean, it already sold so there's no going back, but I have no clue if I was too low, too high, or that was the perfect price.

I have another costume I plan on selling after I wear it once since i lost interest in it, but again, I'm lost as to what to price it as. It's fairly complex, a pretty popular character, and cost me over $100 in materials and fabrics, and took 2 weeks of almost constant work to make it last summer. Lots of handpainting, it's got lights, it's really large in size, stuff like that. I'd give the craftsmanship a B+. But is it worth $100? $500? No clue.

Could really use some advice for how to price these sorts of things! Especially as I plan on selling a lot more of my stuff in the future.

Prototype it out of cardboard or paper first so you can go through a lot of drafts without much effort or cost. Once you have something that looks right with that, take it apart and use the paper as a template to cut out the foam. Take note of the width of the foam, since it could change how things fit together in the end.

The first time you debut a costume doesn't have to be the final version. People improve their costumes over time with each wear (which also brings the value you're getting down). Do wait to give your best product if you feel that it will lessen the overall quality to rush the project, but if you're just talking about improvements to bring it over the top, consider adding those on at a later date.

Wrap your head (sans your breathing holes and eyeballs) in saran wrap then duct tape. Use a marker to make lines to orient the piece, cut your head out, retape the cut lines, then stuff your duct tape masterpiece with newspaper or any cheap filler to replicate your head. Once you've done that, draw your design. Cut in sections making sure to label each part (I like to do so using my pov as a measurement. For example, "left ear" would be the left ear from my pov, not the ear someone would identify by looking at me. I like to use numbers as well. section 1 for the left side would start with the left ear as well so L1, L2, L3, R3, R2, R1). Next, transfer your designs to paper. I don't work with foam, but if you need to add a seam allowance then do so. Then, cut out your foam and test the fit. Repeat until satisfied.

Also, I'm a visual learner who battles this problem in my projects as well. Watch some youtube videos of people working with foam helmets. Doesn't have to be this specific one, but their techniques will aid you.

The “white/ silver” wig part is false, you can dye any wig that’s lighter than the color you need. However, you should still stay in the color range of the target color — for example, I got an aqua and a salmon wig from arda to dye navy blue and mahogany brown, respectively. The colors add together kind of like paint— if you get a green wig and add blue dye, then it will turn teal or turquoise. It’s a good way to get colors that would otherwise require buying multiple colors of dye.

It is, however, very difficult to dye to a true black as the other anon said. At best you’ll probably get a rather dark brown.

To solve the back-heavy problem, sew wig combs into the top of the inside of the wig, and be sure to wear a net-style wig cap for the prongs to go through. It’ll stay on your head a lot more securely.
As for the styling, maybe a French twist or something? Some of those hair roses? Look into different styles of buns and try them out until something strikes your fancy, anon. Pinterest probably has a lot of ideas.

Hello /cgl/, I'm new to cosplay and I need advice.

Realistically, how much would it take me to do pic related ? I've got less than 3 weeks (18 days).

Second, I searched on the cosplaytutorial page and almost all the tutorials about glasses are 404'd. Where can I find cheap second-hand glasses and how could I color the lens in green if I do ? This probably sounds stupid but like I said I'm extremely new to this.

And for the school uniform, all the tutorials are about female ones. Am I just supposed to buy green fabric, cut it like a jacket and sew a bunch of black fabric on top of it ?

I think I got an idea for the hairpins, and a friend told me I didn't have to buy a wig or color my hair at a hairdresser since apparently there's cheap paint specifically for hair that can be used to color them for like 1-2 days. I don't know if there's a specific name for that though, since I've searched so far and didn't find anything about it.

This in 3 weeks and it's your first cosplay? That's going to be really short. You can get commercial patterns for a simple pair of pants and a straight collar jacket, make them in green fabric and add black bias tape for the trims. Go to a fabric store, they'll have patterns and they'll help you pick the right fabrics. For the glasses, the easiest way is probably to stick window tint sheet over the lenses. The hairpins shouldn't be too hard, I'd do foam and some of those clear christmas baubles that open up and paint the interior pink. For the hair, I'd really recommend a wig, colored sprays look like absolute garbage and dyeing your own hair is going to be pretty expensive and damaging, especially if you have dark hair to begin with.

I’m doing female character for a group but the point is that I’m not convincing. I’m too tall and broad and muscular for the character so ‘passing’ isn’t even an issue here.

The issue is makeup. I have quite bushy brows and 5 o’clock shadow that would just look shit even if I’m not trying to pass. I have 0 makeup experience and don’t even know where to start when it comes to covering up facial hair and having smooth, even skin. Any advice on what I should be using? The goal is to just have a smoother looking face rather than look feminine.

I assume from saying "FDA" that you live in the US? Usually, when people talk about getting their eyes measured, I think they're from outside the US.
I went to have this done a few years ago,
and unfortunately my eye doctor couldn't do it.
I don't remember exactly what he said as this was a few years ago, but he had mentioned something about not being able to actually give me my eye diameter legally, or they didn't measure them that way or something. I don't remember for sure, but I think he also had said something about being legally obligated to take me through the whole contact-buying process and I would have to get a prescription, otherwise he could get into some legal trouble. Again this was a few years ago so I don't remember for certain.
It's apparently really strict because contacts, for some reason, are regulated as a drug in the US. This isn't the case in most other countries.
He wasn't judgy or anything, he was really nice and sympathetic to the fact that he was unable to do it. He seemed to find the fact that contacts were regulated as drugs really frustrating, actually.
You may have better luck getting this from your eye doctor, though. My doctor seemed particularly cautious of it and everyone might not be the same.
Someone else may have had a different experience, and have more advice as to how to actually get your eyes measured for contacts in the US, but this was my experience and your eye doctor may or may not be the same.

Youtube is going to be your primary resource. "Men's makeup routine" should be a good search term, but don't be afraid to delve into the world of drag either. You obviously don't have to do the extenuated looks, but you'll get an idea of how drag queens achieve a feminine look. Don't worry about using the high end products, drug store will do just fine.

To give you the short and skinny though:

if you dont have a vision problem, then pretty easily. ask an optometrist for an eye exam. they'll give you the measurements and you order your lenses with those numbers. wearing them however long is dependent on brand, but don't sleep with them in. wearing contacts long term can damage your eyes, but for a lot of us, we're used to wearing them, so it doesnt bother us. dont push yourself too hard if youre new to contacts.

Going to be cosplaying as Marisa this year for a con. I cosplayed as her last year, but didn't like some aspects of my cosplay.

The outfit has two bows on it (one on the hat, and one on the back). The outfit came with safety pins so I can pin the bows, but I don't like this. Does anyone recommend some sort of velcro system to keep them on? Would it last through a weekend?

I personally wear prescription contacts so I had the chance to get used to contacts in general. Wouldn’t recommend wearing cosplay contacts (which are more rigid and less permeable) for 12 hours on your first run though. And honestly, most of the time, I only spend like 8 hours in cosplay before changing out into more comfy fanwear.

Though if you really want to, I suppose it’s doable. Practice as much as you can, but if you feel that your eyes are getting irritated then stop/take them out/take a break.

I'm only seeing black. Is some of the white in there part of the suit? Anywho, you can...:
1) buy two different colors of the same stretch material used to make the body suit and sew them together in that pattern
2) Use an iron on applique (like one you print the design out on and then iron on or white cotton interfacing cut to the shape you need then ironed on) This will make the areas with the applique stiffer however. It could bunch or crease.
3) Pay a website to custom print this bodysuit
4)Use white foam the same way you would with the armor pieces, but thinner.

I've driven down to a handful of fabric stores but none of them seem to carry the material (which I assumed is either a pleather, PVC vinyl, or rubber latex base and is what I asked for) in a stretch matte white. Does anyone have wig recommendations for Mion? I have two problems: style and colour.

Pinky Paradise asks for a prescription IIRC when you order from the US because of that law. Thing is, your optometrist can totally write you one that you can use there.

Just say you want to buy lenses in bulk from Costco or Walmart online or something. There's various US based lens sellers, and they sell the same brands your opto might, so it's really not a strange thing to want to do that.

Getting fitted for lenses requires getting your eye prescription, as in a glasses prescription, which is composed of 3 things: power, axis, and cylinder. The first one tells how near or farsighted you might be, the second two are for measuring astigmatism. If you don't already wear glasses for it you don't need to worry about it. Then you get your base curve, which is the curvature of your cornea, so that you can buy a lens that can fit on top of your eye properly.

Your doctor cannot deny you a copy of your prescription. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0116-prescription-glasses-and-contact-lenses I double checked that here (I'm Canada based, and we don't have the same laws regarding lenses, nevertheless I made sure I was fitted for lenses before I ordered circle lenses. My doctor even checked my eyes while I was wearing the lenses - I told her that if she told me to toss them in the trash right away because they were dangerous I would. She said that they fit well and it wasn't going to be an issue. Ymmv. She is pretty chill that way). You need a prescription even for cosmetic lenses but I don't see why getting a fitting for them would be a problem. If your doctor presses you, say you want colour dailies or something, you don't have to tell them you're ordering sketch circle lenses lol. But it's none of their business as long as you know the risks.

Anyway, anons, if either if your optometrists refuses to get you a contact lens fitting and prescription, ditch them and go to a different one. Just please don't order lenses without the fitting first.

With Arda, beware of how badly long wigs from them can tangle.

Don't use a long with to tie up - the wefts of the wig are sewn in one direction and if you brush it up, the wig net is going to show.

You can either get a special ponytail wig with a clip, or use a short bob type with with a clip. Now, technically, the short wig and clip is not as "proper" and doesn't look as realistic but IMO depending on how accurate you want to be with your cosplay, it's really not that big a deal and much, much easier to style.

I bought a ponytail wig from Arda when I cosplayed Monika. I had a hell of a time fitting the wig to my head (I had to untie it, tie it tighter, and get it to go into a high ponytail smoothly which took me forever). In the end, considering the difficulty involved in the rest of the cosplay (that is to say, not very much), and that I wasn't entering any sort of contest, I should have just saved myself the headache.

Also, the ponytail clip tangled like crazy. It's been 9 months and I still haven't untangled it. One day I will, and I'll be using my own tears as the detangler.

I really don’t want to go back to the eye doctor JUST to get a prescription for lenses for cosplay. My eyes haven’t changed, I just went a year ago and my glasses/contacts are definitely still perfect.

1st time w/ foam. i made the scaly blue arm bracer with a thin sheet of kids craft foam from walmart (if it makes any difference).

going to paint it with angelus leather paint. any brands recs or tips for priming and sealing foam? the bracer has to stay pretty flexible, and i’d like a glossy finish w/ minimal brush strokes. i’m thinking i use elmer’s glue as primer and varnish for sealer??

I recommend you start with "sealing" the foam with a heat gun or a hair dryer, just gotta be patient while the foam "shrinks" so the pores are closed, making a smoother surface to prime and then paint. Make sure to do this in a well ventilated area, and don't hover a spot too long or else you can melt and disfigure the foam.

Then put together your foam pieces with contact cement, or in a pinch hot-glue is oookay. I used a tube of silicon filler (same stuff for bathrooms) to fill in cracks if there are gaps between joint edges.

As for priming, I've used Plasti-dip spray --- more reliable and durable than elmer's glue. Take your time with the coats in between the drying times, it's worth the wait to do thin light coats. Otherwise good luck with the elmer's glue, take your time and do more coats than you think.

Then use any paints you want on top. Finally after the paint is dried, get some gloss varnish spray and do several light thin coats (again, wait for coats to dry completely in between).

Of course all that I've mentioned above can be costly, I've used dollarstore acrylic paints and went to hardware stores for my plasti-dip spray. And this is really a combination of old experience with the craft thin foams to more recent EVA foam (thicker). If there's a lot of movement with the foam piece, it will crack if you go with the inexpensive route. Good luck!

Final piece of secret tech: there will inevitably be some gaps or other imperfections by the end of cutting and joining together your foam. You can fill in and smooth over a lot of flaws using a caulk like quick seal. Just fill it in and use a little bit of water on your fingers to spread it around and smooth it over, then let it dry. As long as you don't over-apply it and leave gross blobs everywhere it will blend in after you paint it over.

There isn't a "cosplay" brand of lashes. Just focus on the reviews, price, quality, and availability of the lashes. If you want to go full weeb and get asian lashes, head to Daiso, Taobao, or AliExpress. Does anyone have any recommendations for red prescription color contacts? A lot of the ones I've seen at cons look incredibly shitty and cartoony. My plans for constructing that are basically to get a big sheet of foam board and cut it to look like that. Does that seem like a solid construction plan?
Also, a running gag in the show is that he constantly bangs it on doorways, something I'd ideally like to be able to replicate. Do you guys have any recommendations for stiffening the board enough to make that possible, or is that probably just a pipe dream? Search 'two tier cloak'. I don't know the proper historical name if there is one, but that's basically what it is. (Alucard wears a Great Coat which has a short cape.) It looks like your particular cape has a short tier that covers the front and back of the body, but the longer tier only hangs down the back, not in front if that makes sense.

Foam board would do the job visually, but I would have concerns about durability.

What I would do is to get four equal lengths of PVC pipe to form the base of each 'sword', that should be light and strong enough to take some damage. You could probably make the scabbards by sandwiching the pipe with some eva mat foam, and the handles by just wrapping the pipe in craft foam.

How are you planning on mounting the swords behind you for carrying? Some kind of harness?

Okay, calm down.

If you only have that little time, you'll have to do something easy.

Here is what you do: get a roll of craft foam or, failing that, a big piece of thin cardboard, like cardstock.

Wrap it around your head to form a tube. The exact size of the tube is going to depend on the size of your head. Use tape to hold the tube in place for a bit, and make marks at the overlap/join so you can line it up again perfectly later.

Plan on cutting off the top part of the tube so that you have the slope, with the bottom of the cut lower than the top at the back. Figure out where your eyes are when you are wearing the tube and cut out the eye holes.

Draw the shape of the bottom part with the pointy nose, such that you leave the bottom half of your face exposed.

Unroll the foam/cardboard and make all of the cuts you just marked. This is easier to do when flat.

Roll it back up (use the marks you make before for alignment) and glue it in place this time. Then take some more of what you are using and make a flat panel that covers up the hole in the top, forming the slope.

If you can fine some cheap rubber tubing, this is when you would glue it in place around the bottom of the helmet. Its a nice detail, but you are short on time so if you can't do this part its not the end of the world.

Assuming you are mostly happy with the shape of how things turned out, we can go on to finishing touches. If you are not happy with how it is coming along, make it again.

When you are ready to continue, use some caulk (like quick-seal) to fill in and smooth over any unsightly cracks or gaps.

If you are using foam, seal the foam with a heat gun or hairdryer. You want to make it look a little shiny, not melt it. Skip this step for cardboard.

Then cover the whole thing with a brushed on coat of mod podge/elmers glue. Let that dry, and do it again for a second layer. This will stiffen it (especially if its cardboard) and help give it a smooth finish.

Then spray the whole thing with plastidip, a kind of rubber spray. Let that dry, do it again.

After that has dried, spray the whole thing yellow.

Everything I described can pretty reliably be found at your local walmart or equivalent, with the exception of a roll of craft foam. You might only be able to find it in smaller sheets. If thats the case, look for the big sheets of thin cardboard in the crafts section.

I would prefer to use foam, but you are on short time so you dont have a huge amount of time to wait for delivery.

The original plan was to either hook it to my belt or velcro it to the back of my suitcoat. A harness would probably work too, though I think velcro is likely the best bet for making sure it stays put properly during the day while having it be removable enough for when I don't actually want to bang it on doors.

If you have it hang from the harness by a strap, you can probably rig it so that you can just pull the whole thing to the side so that it goes front-to-back rather than side-to-side when you want to go through a door.

I'm last-minute preparing for Katsucon and my sewing machine just broke. However, I have what's probably a really stupid idea but which might work. Most of the sewing I have to do is on a strip of silver bias tape. If, instead of sewing, I used staples to hold the fabric together for the con, how obvious would it be? Would it show up in photos, is what I'm mainly worried about.

A few reasons. One, with staples I can take them out after the con and after my machine is fixed, and actually do a proper job with stitching. If I use glue then if I fuck up I fuck up for good.
Two, I'm worried the glue will bleed through the fabric and be visible on the outside.
Three, I don't have much experience working with fabric glue.

Yeah those are visible areas. Iron-on or a strong double sided tape probably your best options.

That's not an awful idea, but I can't imagine that'd be very comfortable. Just make sure to staple only in the seam allowance. I would heavily advise against any kind of "top stitching". How about hem tape? It's permanent, but you could sew right through it. It's pretty stable and cleaner than fabric glue.

It's not. Just don't claim that you made it or try entering a contest with it. I'm seeing good reviews on their facebook. There's a couple product reviews on youtube too. You should check out their craftsmanship through one of them. Looks good to me though!

Hello again /cgl/. I posted around two weeks ago about needing help for my Saiki Kusuo cosplay. (>>10090875)

Now that we're 2 days before the con: I pretty much got everything and will get around to assemble everything today and tomorrow, except for one thing: the two white bases of the weird pink balls antennas.

What would be the best material to use to make them and then do the little green shading on it ? I've been thinking polystyrene (same thing I used for the pink balls) and then use either a green marker or glue fabric on it. However I'm not sure if polystyrene would stick well on the wig or if the hair clips I got would stick to it. (Talking about the hair clips, is there really no risk the antennas fall from the wig ? I already have a hard time sticking the clips to my normal hair so I'm a bit worried about the wig. Also hoping I can cut it well enough to make it look like his hair-style, since it's originally a girl's pink wig.)

You could use a myriad of materials, but I think the deciding factor is going to be adhesion.

The world's your oyster. I don't know what other materials you're working with so before picking, I'd suggesting fleshing out how you plan on attaching them to your wig.
