I like 7 best too for loose socks, not too much but also just enough of a loose sock.
Personally I would love to see a revival f the 1989 three fold socks one.
It seems from the chart that it’s sort of cycling back around though as now many school girls like over ankle length socks and scrunch them down which is not too far off from 1989 “3 folded” so maybe in the next 10 years we will be back at loose socks again.

thoughts on wearing black leggings with nanchatte?
it's not the same as wearing tights, I know, but I can only find thick leggings, not thick tights. I live in Canada where it can get quite cold.
I wear leggings with rainboots so they get tucked in. I just hope that makes them look close enough to tights. Obviously I try not to wear my leggings with sneakers or loafers, that looks messy.

I don't even go here, but as someone who had to wear skirts to school even in cold winters, it's really about the under layers. Keep key areas warm like your chest, your neck and your ears. I used to wear extra shorts under my skirts, over my tights.

Of course, paired with a cute jacket, this will get you to like -15C at most. Colder requires less pretty outerwear unless you're a masochist. Though you can still dress it up cutely, like tie your scarf in a bow or something. I think as long as you have that sort of silhouette/vibes that the school skirt gives off, I would still recognize it as nanchatte.

I can suffer the cold to a certain degree, but when it gets to be -25 celsius after wind chill, you get frostbitten in several minutes. If I had a car I think it wouldn't matter much, but I take public transit and often wait up to a half hour for transfers.

I honestly just have a parka and sure it's down to my knees and covers everything cute about my outfit but at least I can wear a cute hat and mitts and stuff. Go for a cute colours like pastel pink or blue if you can find something (I know it's tricky as usually winter stuff is so drab). And for winter boots, make sure you go waterproof and frostproof but maybe with some fluffy trim or pompoms or something.

Hahaha, that'd be nice. No, my city is too small for trains, (there used to be street cars in the 60s and those got nixed). And the buses are often late or they skip a scheduled bus and some buses only come once every 30 minutes (1 hr on Sundays). There are bus shelters at some stops, but they're not heated, nor do they have actual doors you can close, they just keep the wind and precipitation off you a little bit.

Of all the fleece lined tights I've ordered from these places, one fit properly, two fit so-so, the rest had the crotch ride down so bad I couldn't wear them.

Wearing nanchatte (seifuku) out today for the first time. I have a question though, I got this seifuku from bodyline, and it's actually quite nice... except the skirt. For whatever reason the skirt will not stay pleated. Luckily I have one of their separate skirts, which is leagues ahead of the seifuku skirt in quality, but I have seen other girls wearing bodyline seifuku sets and they seem to stay pleated. would perhaps ironing the pleats down help, or am I jsut out of luck? anyone have any bodyline uniform tips?

I picked up 3 different skirts and one of their new-ish uniform blouses to try out, i'll let you know what I think about them when they come in. I've been to the Conomi store in Harajuku and you're definitely allowed to try on clothes there. I tried on a sailor outfit: skirt, top and ribbon. I don't think they usually get many people at once, so there was great customer service. There was an old woman working there at the time and she was incredibly nice to me. The only thing is, she was so nice that I would have felt bad if I'd left the place empty-handed. And all the stuff is super nice... I ended up buying a school bag, sailor top, and ribbons. So if you're ready to spend all your money there then go for it.

I think the cardi looks too cosplayish desu. It looks more like a cheapo sweat shirt than a nice knit school cardigan. I'd also ditch the leg warmers. If you really wanted that look, I think loose socks would look better. Also, maybe iron the pleats of the skirt and unbutton the last few buttons on the cardi to prevent the skirt from being pinched in too much. Otherwise, it's good for a first time! I finally went to the store to try some things on today since I finished work early, I felt weird going there with my work clothes but what the hell.

The shop assistant told me the lucky packs were not random but exactly the same colorways as pictured, which kinda surprised me but now looking at the item descriptions in >>10037649 it was clearly written.

Hey gulls, hoping I could ask for some advice here. I have someone in the secret santa exchange who said they wear some nanchatte and while I've pretty much fulfilled my full gift for them I wanted to get them a little something they could use for nanchatte. What would be a good not large item? UTKs? Fleece tights for the winter? I'm guessing I should avoid neck ribbons if I don't know what skirts they have to match? Would looking at normie cardigans work for this fashion if you go a bit large? (Like, they don't work for lolita mostly, but do they work for nanchatte?)

And does brand matter as much with nanchatte? I wear lolita and while offbrand can work, my brand UTKs/OTKs are much better than my offbrand ones, but maybe I've just been buying from the wrong places.

Sorry for all the questions, I just feel a bit dumb with a j-fash I have no experience with. Want to make sure I'm getting them a quality item but also kind of need to stick with something already in the USA so I can get their stuff ready to ship when the last item from Japan arrives soon.

I think a bow could be a good idea as nanchatte in not as matchy-matchy as lolita. You could buy one in a colour you know they like to wear and that would make for a nice gift. Brand or off-brand is not a big deal as long as the item does not look too shiny/costumey/cosplay-ish.

Regular cardigans work, oversized vs unoversized is a matter of style, I think. The cardigan in >>10050725 doesn't seem that loose on her, just long.

If you're really stuck for ideas and don't like the idea of gifting a bow tie, then hair accessories are usually okay -- scrunchies, hair ties, cutesy bow clips, as long as you roughly know what colours she likes then it's okay if it's not a 100% match.

Alternatively, you could simply send her some cute stationery or some snacks (if you know what her allergies are/aren't). I know, not very related to nanchatte, but most girls appreciate snacks and cute stationery either way, it's cheap and easy to find.

It really depends on the shape of the cardi. Normie cardis with a straight neck don't look very nanchatte; likewise a lot of them have a very deep vneck that goes halfway down your torso which leaves a lot of white space for the shirt you wear underneath. Some will work just fine. One of my best cardigans is one I found on a clearance rack in the men's section at Urban Planet.

Brand doesn't matter much for otk's or utk's but it is a matter of fit and comfort. If they're petite they'll have no problems with socks sitting where they should. If not, or if they prefer nicer material like cotton and such, get otk's from Sock Dreams. And fleece tights are a must in winter in colder places.

I have it. It's not heavy, I used it a couple times during my highschool years, actually.

It functions nicely as an ordinary bag for books outside of nanchatte cosplay purposes, although keep in mind that it is a little small and you cannot fit much into it. The max I could fit in was two to three school textbooks, along with small personal items like a phone and a wallet, etc.

The hooks are pretty sturdy, but on my bag one of them came off after a year or so of use, though I think that was entirely my fault.

One thing to note about the bag is that the leather had a weird smell to it. For me, the smell was gone after one good thorough wash with scented soap.

I still have the bag stashed away in a closed. I haven't been using it due to the broken hook, too lazy to fix that.

I more or less treat it as regular clothes. It's a lot more normie friendly than say, lolita (which I wear too). I wore it to school, and I still wear it for shopping, for dates, errands, casual hangouts, to the library/playgroups with my kid, and now that I work in an office that just doesn't give a fuck I wear it to work too.

It is just fashion. Some people go all out with cute hair and impeccably coordinated accessories but nanchatte is so friendly to the lazy fashionista. As long as your pieces have kind of the right tailoring, you can wear it and you don't have to worry about anything outside of specific brands having an incorrect aesthetic (of course, quality brands can be nice anyways). And even then you have so much leeway into being more kawaii/weeb, or preppy, or sporty. It's so great.

It's the cut of the skirt and how/where the pleats are gathered and sewn. Like smaller pleats with little to no waistband are usually more up and down, and only have more volume if you cinch in the waist, wear it a bit higher (like your natural waist), or naturally have the hips to make it flare out. Wider waistbands means the pleats are lower, but add a wider part and theres more fabric used on the pleating, and more fabric means more volume. Same applies to bigger pleats. Hope this helps

I totally forgot to mention this, but I was in tokyo for two weeks over new years and had the chance to visit the conomi store in Harajuku. I totally forgot to take pictures, but the stoor looks really great. Way more organized and polished than the old photo posted earlier in this thread. I did end up buying an entire outfit, but I haven't worn it yet as its way too cold back home in sweden for skirts atm, and I haven't ironed the pleats in the skirt yet anyways, so I haven't cut the threads out. The shop staff were really kind and helpful, and listened to all my opinions (but maybe they just guessed based on the amount of shopping I with me from other stores that I had money to spend) and helped me get the outfit together. I was allowed to try it on, walk around the store to see how I felt in it, and even go outside the doors to look at other bows that I'd like more than the ones they had recomended. I wouldn't say they were too pushy, I chose to add a blazer myself, but said no to a pair of shoes (My feet will be too big anyways, and I can buy them for cheaper on asos). Either way, I really felst special in there! I'll post the outfit as soon as I wear it, but in the meantime, here is a less serious one from Disneyland. I didn't take any pictures without the Chip and Dale jacket, but the knit underneath has a Micky on it. Got all those pieces (except the Chip and Dale jacket) at Good Day House in Harajuku, and whilst the skirt is in no way comparable to conomi quality, the knit, shirt and bow all feel really nice!

You'd probably have to get things custom made, anon. I don't mean to be harsh but you might be best losing some inches for the most comfortable fit in nanchatte style stuff. Choose a persona for your male uniform. Are you studious with your tie and glasses on just right? Or are you the lazy boy with a loose tie and your collar unbuttoned? Maybe you're a punky guy with a couple safety pins somewhere they shouldn't be.

In many Japanese schools only recently did they allow girls option of pants, almost all still choose skirts though.
Before some of the schools changed the rules for uniforms for girls, every girl was expected to wear the skirt uniform no matter if you like it or not.
Other schools would just let you wear the boys uniform pants but it depends on the school they all have their own rules about what’s allowed.

Most skirts I’ve had or seen have been wool blend fabrics, at least for “winter” uniform skirts. The summer lighter ones can be scratchy and stiff sometimes but it’s possible to find ones that are pretty soft too. For the most part none of my skirts are really rough.
Scratchy and stiff is still better than thin and flimsy cosplay skirts, at least it holds the pleat without wrinkling up.

I’ve found Eastboy stuff in thrift stores. I saw an actual seifuku in a regular junk thrift store once. I never saw them in thrift stores dedicated to clothes. But that one was still expensive (the prices were on a piece of paper under the glass in the counter) and the Japanese woman I was with and the clerk both acted shook when I asked how much it was. I just lied and said it’s for a Halloween costume lol. I didn’t buy it anyways, too expensive.
I reccommend getting bodyline skirts while you’re in Japan since they will arrive to you the next day.

I go to Kinji all the time and I've never seen an actual uniform there. People who sell them tend to put them online on fril or mercari, same for Conomi items. You might find see Eastboy stuff and nanchatte-able cardigans amd sweaters but I've never had this luck with anything else.
Uniform skirts are pretty in right now though so if you visit Shibuya 109 for example you'll easily find stuff. Not secondhand tho.
