I usually have to go out in cosplay in some capacity while I'm at a con, and I used to go to the mall in cosplay when I was young. Most people stare but look away when I look at them lol, i've gotten pointed at and whispered about and those are probably the most "rude" things but they didn't seem to be done in a mean way, just normal curiosity. A lot of people also smile at you, and I've had people come up to me and compliment me or as about my cosplay before.

The most negative experience I've had was probably when I went into Tim Hortons for a coffee and the staff laughed at me, reflecting back it wasn't that bad but as a teenager I felt really self concious.

The best interaction I've had is with a security guard who said he liked my cosplay and asked me how the con was, then later helped me find my greyhound bus stop.

Last con I was at I had a 10+ block long walk to the con from my hotel, and I ended up checking out this flee market on the way there. I had someone take my pic and tell me they loved my sense of style, so overall that was pretty positive.

Around the time of AX there's like a 1 mile radius of people in costume at places like McDonald's, CVS, Starbucks, and famously Hooters. I think the people of the DTLA area are just used to weird shit. On our way there though, my cousin and stopped at Starbucks and had to receive our orders in a Momo Yaoyoruzu wig and my green ass eyebrows and hair for my Tsuyu Asui costume. The barista did her best not to stare, but her eyes went so wide. It was hilarious. In general people seem to react that way.Surprised stares and looks, whispers, and giggles. Nothing malicious though, it's all in good fun.

I often take transit to get to the local cons. Most of the experiences I've had have mostly been people asking what I'm dressed up for or trying to sneak photos.

But one time I was taking the bus while cosplaying Alice from Alice in Wonderland and this young guy comes onto the bus. The moment he lays eyes on me his eyes just light up with the most childlike awe and glee (pic related) and he immediately comes & sits down next to me and starts to ask me the usual questions. I never forgot it because he was so excited to see me and I clearly made his day .

Your story reminds me of that time my friend and I did a photoshoot in a park in my town. There's an old medieval gate nearby and since it was Sunday, we decided to go there too, expecting empty streets. However, we'd both forgotten about the monthly flea market and the street was full of sellers, so I started feeling awkward. However, everyone was respectful and curious, and some people asked about how I'd made x part, or told us about how they sewed too. Pretty nice experience !

On the other hand, I went past the train station on Sunday morning the other day wearing the same costume (on my way to my city's con) and I got quite a few rude stares and muttered comments. At first I felt bad, but then I realized that I don't have to take shit from people bumming around in front of the station at 10 am on Sunday.

I do almost every photoshoot in public. Usually people just stare, some of them will come up and tell me I look pretty/like a doll (or the occasional bo peep comment if I'm in a poofy knee-length dress) or comment about something on my costume (like about how tall my heels are). I haven't gotten harassed, but there's some iffier comments sometimes from elderly men (like "i like your tights" while obviously staring at my legs in fishnets). I always have a photographer with large gear shooting me, so most normies see that and don't say much.

At AX, friends and I -wearing Dragon Age, so medieval-looking high fantasy stuff- got invited to a party by a car full of bros while we were waiting outside a restaurant for our table to be called. They'd pulled up at a long stoplight and were holding a shouted conversation with us (mostly questions about what we were dressed up as). It was cute and could have gone worse, given that the guys all looked like they could have been mid-20s judgmental dudes.

I smile at kids if I make eye contact with them while wearing cosplay -- thinking back to my childhood, if a weird alien or princess or superhero had given me a special secret nod, that would have been pretty cool (from a kid's perspective). Kids sometimes want to talk to me about whatever source material I'm from, usually if it's comics or cartoons, and that's also fun.

A few adults are furtive starers, but most have incredulous (but positive) responses. It helps that nerd culture has gained increasing media coverage in recent years, since more people now have heard of "conventions" ("you know Comic Con? it's like that") and they're usually more excited than judgmental that a con is happening nearby.

I go out in public to do shoots all the time. Since I primarily do armor work I get pretty positive interactions, mostly curious ones, things like that. This pic is of me n my friends shitposting at our local mall and visiting Santa last year around this time. I'm the one on the far right, I also built the Soul of Cinder on the far left too.

A couple of people I know go or went to this university that's an hour away from where,and this university is quite well known for its architecture. Since it's a public university there's no explicit rules against photography.

Needless to say I've cosplayed in public there three times already. Some people recognize what I'm cosplaying from, some people just think it's pretty cool and/or ask if their kids can have a photo with me.

I’ve pretty much just gone out to eat in cosplay. Sometimes you gotta grab some food after the con lmao. The local con here is super small and pretty much none of the normies gaf, but I’ve gone to Chick-fil-A in Padme’s outfit on Geonosis (pre-rip lmao), Whataburger AND my old youth group as Mabel Pines, my local mall as Dva (to this day, this one GameStop employee greets me as Dva every time I walk in), Barnes and Nobel as Dva, and most people just stare. Honestly, most people have no clue who you are. In my Padme costume a Chick-fil-A employee congratulated me on my “nice Rey costume”. When I was Mabel for my youth group, we had a twin themed costume competition and my twin brother and I went as Mabel and Dipper. The didn’t even realize I was dressed in costume lmao. In their defense, I wear a ton of fairy kei and lolita so I guess they just saw “colorful and glittery” and glossed over it. We should have won the competition, but two kids dressed up as salt and pepper shakers did instead lmao.

You can do a simple test. Try out a cosplay in full body spandex and WITH a mask. That way people will not know who you are if you feel this is not working out. Also masks embolden a lot of people.

Many using skin tight costumes note they are not remembered when out of costume, I guess people tend to look everywhere but the face if the costume is eye catching.

I dress in whatever I want when I don't have to dress in a specific way (jobs). Went to a con as Misstitched Alice from Madness returns (cosplay is bright af- green striped arm warmers, yellow and green striped top, black and magenta dress etc). When I was driving some college aged guys in the car next to me started honking their horn at me trying to get my attention. I ignored them and they started swerving all over the road and throwing things out their window at my car, I was terrified they were going to crash into me or run me off the road :(

The year AX had to share half of the area with the X Games, I was cosplaying as Celty. I needed to go across the X Games outdoors area, and I thought maybe I’d at least blend in a little with the motorcycle helmet and all, but two drunk girls (it was the middle of the day) started laughing and taking pictures of me. I turned to them and posed, which kind of confused them because I guess they were trying to be sneaky about it. Then a drunk guy yelled “SLUT” as he walked by. I know Celty isn’t the most appropriate costume, but I wasn’t even wearing heels or skin-tight, wet-look suit that some celty cosplayers wear. Still, not a polite thing to do regardless, but it wasn’t that bad.

MARTA rides back and forth at Dragon Con, hooo boy. All the drunks on the train from things like the football or baseball games are always interesting. I generally do military stuff too, so I'll have big weapons in things. A lot of the people eye and point things out to each other.

was tewi from touhou heading home from con pretty late at night alone and sitting on a pretty empty bus trying not to let my big hammer hit anything. this couple sitting on the other side facing me were staring at me and whispering to each other for like 20 minutes until they got ready to get off the bus and came over to where i was near the door and said “we’ve been trying to figure out what this huge thing is the whole time and have no clue what it is, could you tell us?” and i tell them it’s a hammer and they’re like “it’s so weirdly shaped though” so i explained it’s for pounding mochi because my character is a moon rabbit that does that. pretty wholesome desu, i’ve otherwise never had anything negative in cosplay, never even any rude comments or catcalls or whatever
