I think it's been a year since the last time we've had a thread like this (someone made a summary of that one here: https://ravensnow.wordpress.com/2017/07/05/cgl-lolita-books-films-and-series/

Personally I'm looking for recommendations for graphic novels since they weren't mentioned much last time.

May I bring manga here? I bring it here.

Yes, I'm looking titles exactly about lolitas who call themselves lolitas, wear lolita brands, use our speech and so on. Your link contain too much "inspired" sources with just lolita aesthetic presence, but not about lolitas themselves. This is nice, but does not touch my heart as much as "true" lolita titles - I know only these at the moment:
- Kamikaze Girls
- Complex Age
- So Pretty, Very Rotten
And looking for stuff of exactly the same setting of just lolita-loving characters.

So Pretty, Very Rotten is good fun, but I'm also really fond off X-day and Othello especially. Othello is only vaguely related to lolita, but the main character is clearly meant to be a moitiefag in her spare time. X-day is much darker, but one of the main characters is a gothic lolita who has no confidence when she's not in her frills. Seriously recommend these, X-day is short too.
>Pic related is from one of the darkest scenes of Othello but I like her dress and she turns the situation around in a really cool way.

New books this summer that maybe interesting to lolitas:

Spinning Silver, Naomi Novik - A fantastic retelling of the Rumpelstilstkin fairy-tale, mixed in with Novik's own wonderful imagination.
The Governess Game, Tessa Dare - Tessa's books are always a lovely treat. In this installment of the Girl Meets Duke series (which you don't have to read in order), a governess attempts to mend the ways of the libertine Duke who is the guardian of the two wild orphan girls who are her charges.
The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, Mackenzi Lee) - Sequel to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. Felicity Montague just wants to be a doctor - instead, she finds herself on an adventure with the daughter of a notorious pirate queen that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.
Melmoth, Sarah Perry - Helen Franklin, working as a translator in Prague, she has found a home of sorts—or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore. As such superstition has it, Melmoth travels through the ages, dooming those she persuades to join her to a damnation of timeless, itinerant solitude. To Helen it all seems the stuff of unenlightened fantasy. But, unaware, as she wanders the cobblestone streets Helen is being watched. And then Karel disappears.
The Other Miss Bridgerton, Julia Quinn - This is the third in the Rokesbys series, which is really a prequel to the Bridgerton series, but don't worry, you don't have to read them in order. - Adventurous Poppy Bridgerton stumbles into a smuggler's cave while holidaying on the Dorset coast, and ends up kidnapped by pirates. The captain - actually the son of an Earl - didn't ask for this, but now they seem to be stuck together on a voyage to Portugal.

For me it's rather grotesque fantasy than actually lolita movie. It uses lolita just as symbol of something extremely kawaii to put it in plot, not as a main motif.
Not mentioning that it's plot is rather ridiculous and made me OMGWTF facepalming too much during watch.
Ok, it's pretty ok if you take it like just comedy of absurd and laugh by yourself. But I can't imagine me take this video for serious and show my parents or normie friends and say "Hey, look! This is what lolitas are! This what we feel!"

I wanted to like it, I really did, and I did at first until I reached the end. Would've been better if the protagonist learned to love herself at the end, cute and tough at once and all, without seeking her ex's approval. The fact they used lolita fashion, a style often associated with wearing silly frilly shit for yourself and not for the approval of men, in a video with this ending/message... I don't know, I'm not comfortable with it.

Just found it in Spanish as well but no English unfortunately. She's also one of the creators of W.I.T.C.H. and apparently she based the main character (Elisabeth) on Elyon after Disney basically kicked her out because her ideas were too dark. I saw the Austrian and Takarazuka productions of Elisabeth the musical were mentioned in the previous thread, but imo the Toho production is much better than the Takarazuka production (which focuses more on Death). Takarazuka Revue does have a lot of other musicals that I think lolitas would like, like Rose of Versailles (pic related). This is from the book 'Japanese Goth' by Tiffany Godoy and Ivan Vartanian. I'm sure there were scans, and the Novala essay also got posted, but I can't find the tumblr anymore. You can find more about the book here:
https://www.popmatters.com/73221-japanese-goth-a-manifesto-for-the-beautiful-macabre-2496024080.html

>The series of six illustrations that comprises “Yoh’s Monochromatic World” is a mise-en-scene of sorts. Each portal or door opens to another room. The reduction of the palette to contrast emphasizes silhouette and contour, as is also the case with Mukuro’s photographs of his clothing designs. Both artists make a thematic link through this visual trope, fusing the figure in each image to her environs. So while there is a sense of perspective, we are left with a flattened, graphic quality. Centuries ago, clothing with a deep indigo blue, practically black, was a very traditional colour associated with farmers and lower-class samurai. At the same time, a contrasting high-fashion sensibility is created with the use of black, which has its roots in fashion, first influenced by designers such as Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto. The early work of these fashion pioneers was exclusively monochromatic and continues to be characterized by warped forms that are themselves a deconstruction of traditional silhouettes.

>> No.9952570

>Compared to Western dress, clothing heavily embellished with frills and lace may seem outlandish, but when considered alongside the Japanese tradition of wearing kimono, the hyperbolically cute and matronly attire seems no more garish in its presentation. In other words, an outré silhouette is not shocking to a Japanese public accustomed to elaborate dress. What is particular about the style here, however, is the strong reference to Victorian dress, or more specifically, victorian dolls, as well as the influence of Lewis Carroll’s character Alice. In terms of form, there is a consistency in the clothing: a knee-length ruffled dress, white tights, and a headpiece are compulsory. In its own way, this attire is a kind of uniform, which in itself an integral part of the Japanese sartorial vocabulary. But this is less an adherence to rules than an appreciation of established forms (known in Japanese as kata) and a pleasure in seeing their many varieties. As an archetype, Alice represents a young girl whose inquisitive nature leads her down a rabbit hole, where she encounters talking animals and anthropomorphized objects in a nonsense world. Amid absurdity, we are enticed by the duality of a sweetness that carries dark undertones.

Well, that was weird. The characterization felt very bland, very 2 dimensional. Characters who were meant to be sympathetic like the main character's girlfriend just came off as unpleasant or whiny, I can't say I found any character particularly interesting. The most interesting part of the book was what wasn't said - things about the nature of The Unbroken Thread, for example. I know that sometimes things are scarier when left unexplained but I didn't find this book particularly scary so I'm just left with questions. It kind of felt like I was reading a long creepypasta based on a tabletop roleplaying game. On the other hand, all the lolitas are gay and catty as fuck so I guess that was accurate.

Pic related is one of two dresses he describes in a little detail. This is one made by the main character.

Clothes in this book are described very vaguely, it's clear that the author was a little out of his depth and meant for the readers to imagine the right sort of thing. He's married to a lolita so I expected better, but the story more played off themes of community, desire, and the way hype and gossip spread rather than the dresses themselves. The story wasn't really about clothes or jfashion t b h... Those were just part of the frame. I think it would have worked almost as well if it were written about cosplayers or furries or larpers. Glad you liked my review, am happy to answer any more questions.

I feel like finding books etc that really fit gothic lolita is hard. So much goth stuff is more like Tim Burton/Hot Topic style. But I have some book recommendations nonetheless:

-weird fiction authors. Lovecraft of course, and Machen (who’s mentioned in the blog post OP linked), and others like M.R. James, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, Ambrose Bierce, Lord Dunsany, and Clark Ashton Smith. Weird fiction is has a very gothic, often sparse style and somehow it just feels nice to read it in Moitie.
-Shirley Jackson is an amazing mid century horror writer, her books are thick with dread and atmosphere. The Haunting of Hill House and The Lottery are great starting points. I finally got into her this year and now I feel dumb for waiting so long!
-a fun, quick Halloween month read is The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury

I also just started reading the Phryne Fisher books and they’re at least as much fun as the show, which is also great. I got into that through one of the lolita media threads here. Reading or watching it really makes me want to make 1920s themed cords.

I feel like classic horror fits gothic reasonably well - the old classics like Dracula, of course, and some of the older murder mysteries e.g. Poe and all the Queens of Crime (although technically they feel more like a classical aesthetic) seem to me to fit pretty well.

What? I mean if you don't like classic gothic fiction that's one thing, but it's literally a whole genre, it's not hard to find at all

It used to be normal enough for a casual café meet in my comm many years ago that someone would bring a GLB or one of the Francois Amoretti books. I suppose it also had to do with the scarcity of these publications in my area at the time. They'd pass the book/mag around so everyone could have at least a flick through it.

What would be a nice gothic and lolita novel? I can't really figure out something outside the Kamikaze Girls spectre.

Thanks a lot, anon!
I really like to write fiction, and it's been a while since I started flirting with the possibility of writing something lolita-related. But I feel like I still need something outside the box of kamikaze Girls and the Japanese style of novelization before really beginning something like that.

NaNoWriMo is just around the corner, so maybe I'll try to write something to warm up.

I ordered a copy on amazon before i read the comments. I didn't read them oncei saw my order went through to hope it was better than it sounded. FUCK was I wrong! It's an instant return!

This is awful in every way! it's not a problem with the plot, but with the technical skill of the writer, a lack of detail, Telling-not-showing, bad phrasing and grammar errors all made a good idea unpalatable. I've read better fanfiction for FotM ships, hastily thrown together by someone who didn't care! I read almost anything but this wasn't good enough to make the cut. That doesn't happen often.

Just searched "lolita fashion" on Ao3 with 20 results. Most of them were gay. There was some fics involving animes I didn't know, one with aot, on with germany from motherfucking hetalia, a few marvel/avengers fics; one of which seemed to include steve rogers (and maybe loki?) Getting into the lolita style, one fic was from that one gay teen novel, and only one was an original fic with original characters, and was still gay.

Every time I read this I felt happy and had to remind myself that you meant two boys, not two girls. Why is fanfic about girls so underappreciated? I even know lesbians who love yaoi and slash but I'm the only person I know who reads yuri and femmeslash. But also
>Original fic with original characters
Unless it's ocXoc set in a world from popular culture like the Harry Potter Universe or Warhammer, that's not what Ao3 is really for. It's meant for fanworks. Maybe you'd have more luck looking on wattpad?

Internalized misogyny. Yaoi is hot and sexy but yuri is weird and gross, obviously. Sad, really, because I'd love to read an actual, genuine lesbian romance involving lolitas.

This reads to me like a child who desperately wants to be a part of the fashion but is terrified of the "drama" surrounding it, so they project their fantasies onto their favorite characters instead. One of the main reasons girls write fanfiction is internalised misogyny. Having no women (as main characters) in your story is a way to get away from the male gaze too.

Idk, I agree with your points, but I've always looked at it from a sexual perspectice. I like guys. 2 hot guys are having sex. Nice. I just figured it was the female version of guys getting off to lez stuff?

>> No.10024418

Fanfiction is about existing female characters, if they only wrote about girls, they are still writing about female characters that were created by/for men.

...so the solution could be to write FanFiction about fandoms created by women and for women or general audiences. That would kind of explain why lgbt women love fanfic about the Sailor Scouts and the Crystal Gems from Steven Universe.

>>10024422
Maybe the men would stay away if the fic were PG13. Like mostly based around feels and the sex is more implied.
