It's supposed to be stupid, because generations don't mean shit really. The line between them is intentionally blurred because it's supposed to create an "us vs them" bullshit since Boomers blamed millennials for absolutely everything, just like how The Greatest Generation blamed Boomers for everything and so on and so forth.

Most memes are pretty stupid, but the Boomer vs Zoomer thing legitimately has some smart tongue in cheek mockery behind it. It's nuanced with a layer of parody that summons Poe's Law because of how absurd it is, but at the same time it mirrors exactly what people think and say. The fact that you two are confused about it is a testament to how well the joke is constructed. Generation segregation are arbitrarily designed by literal whos that manage to find the catchiest name to stick on anyway.

All in all, it's supposed to encompass the feeling of "man, everyone older than me is shit, and everyone younger than me is shit!" that will inevitably carry until your mid-life chapter.

tl;dr - boomers and zoomers are two sides of the same coin, keep making fun of the generation you consider below or above you. There's a reason why the meme either paints you as one or the other without a middle ground.

Your best bet would be to show him lolita fashion shows, or harajuku street interviews. You want to prove to him that is is legitimately an alt-fashion the likes of punk. Remind him that back when punk was at its height (I'm assuming you're using this example specifically because you knew he was a punk in the past) that adults were against it for similar reasons. If you really want to convince him, you'll have to get him to see it under the light of real world examples. Kamikaze Girls honestly isn't a good idea to show him; not only would he almost certainly get bored with it, but he'll definitely just think it's a fiction costume thing. It's not like Kamikaze Girls is played off like a super serious autobiography or anything.

Kawaii Pateen probably has the easiest to find videos that show lolita in a more "everyday" setting. Particularly stuff by Misako, who from the way she talks makes it very clear that this isn't just something she's dressing up for just to go to a con or parade or something. Just be sure to keep away from the actual costume stuff they have on their channel, be careful he doesn't find his way to those.

On another note, it may be dangerous depending on his personality (if he's the frugal type) but show him the storefront sites for brands. Show him how much the stuff costs, how many accessories there are, how much care is put into them, and make him question why "costumes" would be designed with such a level of customization if they weren't meant to be utilized for actual wear. Show him pictures of everyday lolitas in every day settings (check the archives, there are tons of image dump threads of these that have useful examples).

I can drop some more links your way if you're having trouble finding any, but I think I gave a good enough start for you to weave your own lolita education pamphlet for your dad. Good luck, Anon. I'm rooting for you.

They make it very apparent that they're a DESIGNER BRAND and at no point give the hint of these being costumes. They use terms like "this season's release" and give multiple use examples for accessories they're marketing. Bombard him with videos like that that legitimize the fashion, where he can see people are taking this too seriously for it to just be costumes, and also realistically drop in the comment that SOME people treat it as costumes (and often go for cheapy cheap off-brand stuff since they're just emulating the look for giggles rather than actually embracing the fashion) but that there's a deeper world under it than that.

Then as a final note, you can point out that it isn't so much about what others think of you - it's how you want to express yourself. You'll still dress appropriately for whatever occasions (no lolita at funerals, or job interviews or whatever) and that it isn't the clothes defining you. You're wearing the clothes for yourself first and foremost, and it's what makes you comfortable.

Was watching the video at work without headphones, didn't realize this. I know it had sound before. Clicked through a bunch of older videos on their channel and saw audio stripped from them as well. I get super salty when I'm at conventions so I don't go anymore, but I really wish I could enjoy them and that's why I'm salty.

I see people even my age who are just having fun, doing cosplay (even the half assed stuff) and just hanging with friends and having a laugh. I've never made a friend at a convention, always just tagged along with my bf or did a panel and then I didn't know what to do after that past browsing the artist alley.

I always get irritated by these people, and I used to put it down to them looking bad or having no self awareness, but I'm honestly jealous.
