You are correct, any trained patternmaker (or experienced tailor/seamstress) could easily trace off the pieces from an existing dress without damaging it and recreate the pattern. I do think that keeping a pattern for 15 years seems like a long shot, and maybe the designer at the time owns it? We got stuff that Alice made but she seemed ok with the work being redone, so maybe they would need to reach out to the person they had then?

This discussion on washing is so weird to me because it's obvious 99% of western lolitas don't attempt washing at all as if it's a common thing (usually because of being afraid of damaging the items, color bleeding, etc.) If you follow the washing discussions that pop up on Rufflechat about once a month most girls claim this.

Like, I agree about washing, but I doubt gulls here wash/dry clean/etc. all their shit either, especially if they have to spend more money to do so.

try to be careful. color running is an issue however, id be livid spending that much money and it was absolutely trashed after two or three washes. i buy clothing to last me, and lolita actually is pretty decent quality in terms of how it's built and how it holds up, of course this is if you look at the right stuff (obviously a velveteen screenprint WILL NOT hold up the same as a plain printed dress, but in the same tier, obviously that print is going to fade much faster than a solid piece)

No one's saying you can't wash brand, anon, just that you need to take care when you do so. Some sellers would rather not risk damaging someone else's dream dress in their haste to get rid of it.

This isn't a brand-specific thing, though. Most clothes will last longer when washed gently (especially fast fashion). It's just that people don't care about how damaging washers are until the item is expensive and difficult to replace.

I very gently handwash velveteen pieces. They all have dry cleaning labels but desu I have yet to experience any issues and doing it this way makes them more accessible to me (I'd never wear them if I always had to dry clean them). But then again I love all my velveteen pieces and have no intention of selling them, I suppose if you're considering second hand value you might act differently

I have some atelier pierrot that I actually machine wash despite it saying dry clean only. Nothing bad has ever come from it. Just throw it in a garment bag and wash on a gentle cycle with gentle detergent. All my pieces are shantung, so it might depend.

just don't put it in the dryer imo. I machine wash all of my lolita (cold water, gentle cycle, in a garment bag) and jsut lay it out to dry. Occasionally the torchon lace needs to be pulled back into place while wet, but otherwise nothing bad has happened. I don't wear/own any prints though. Poly should be good in a wash, but don't dry it.

A lot of people must suggest this, because Sharpie now makes their own line of fabric marker pens.

(As to how well it works, well, I used it on polyester spoonflower fabric swatch to mark how many times it's been through the washing machine, and it holds up pretty well. Can't say if it'll work on nylon, but I'd definitely have tried this if it was my dress that I was dyeing black, provided I can figure out how to iron/steam velvet)
