When I painted my shoes (which was like the most artsy thing I've ever done. Lots of details and art and stuff) I used regular acrylics, but with quite a bit of water. It soaks into the canvas and since you can't iron shoes anyways fabric paint becomes kind of unnecessary.
They held really well, but then I lost them.

Yes a lot of people look down on it, but really, don't bother so much about it. After all it's just a hobby. Most people that DO care are people on cgl who tend to take these kinds of things p seriously.

Lets say it like this: no one will badmouth you, but they will probably say "oh I wish they had hidden their headband".
Unless your cosplay is midtier or below in which case it will be used against you that your headband is showing.
